We were immediately seated and after perusing the menu my companion ordered a Lemon Drop Martini and a Po Boy Sandwich (substituting fried okra for her side) and I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and the Shrimp Remoulade salad. My companion loved the Lemon Drop martini and said the sandwich was the best Po Boy she had had outside of her home state of Louisiana. The okra, which she kindly shared, was crisp and flavorful. The shrimp in my salad were perfectly cooked and the Remoulade dressing, which had a slight kick to it, was a nice accompaniment. Service was friendly and the food came out very quickly. Great for a quick lunch in Homewood. We got the fried pickles, buffalo chicken wrap, and hamburger steak. The fried pickles were thin and hot and crispy- great. The buffalo chicken wrap was full of chicken and not too hot. The hamburger steak was cooked well and topped with onions, mushrooms, and gravy. Mashed potatoes were excellent. We also got the lemon icebox pie and caramel pie, both of which were great. Parking can be a challenge in downtown Homewood, but service is quick once you're inside. read more

My wife and I ate at Oak Hill Bar & Grill this past Saturday, December 17, 2022. We had a gift card and it was a beautiful day. The atmosphere is great and better than our recent visits to Diplomat Deli and The Ridge (both in Vestavia). We were immediately greeted and seated at a table even though it was a busy day. Our server was Ivy; she did a superb job with a friendly attitude and knowledgeable suggestions. Our order: Fried Dill Pickle $7.50 Shrimp Po Boy $ 11.50 (extra sauce added $1.50) Gam's Patty Melt $11.00 Lemon Ice Box Pie $4.25 The dill pickle appetizer was delicious - salty and extremely hot in temperature. I appreciated that we were immediately served this tasty dish. The batter was light and the pickles were thin. It was nicely salted and perfect with the light ranch dressing. Both of the entrees were delicious. The Patty Melt was so good! The bread was well toasted and bacon was included inside. I dipped the sandwich in the sauce that we requested with the Shrimp Po Boy; it was incredible. The Shrimp Po Boy bread was also perfect and so were the shrimp. I preferred the Patty Melt; my wife preferred the Shrimp Po Boy. French fries were good not great; fried green tomato was all so in the good-not-great category. A neighboring diner suggested we pick the Lemon Ice Box pie for dessert. It had a zesty lemon punch and creamy whipped topping. Very high marks! This review is based strictly on lunch. I have never been back for it as a bar or otherwise. Not to say it wouldn't be a bad bar. I just have yet to go there for night time activities. What keeps me coming back is the lunch. It is great for a combination of meat and two and sandwich place. If you have some co-workers trying to decide what they want and varying appetites, this is your spot. The food is really good bordering on great. Depending on what you get. All of the sandwiches I have had are good. Their veggies are pretty good overall. The black eyed peas are good in my memory. But they were out last time I went. I got the daily special last time out in the boneless chicken and it was good. The mashed potatoes could have been a little more mashed; but I feel like that is a preference choice. Like someone else said, I've not been here at night but if I am in downtown Homewood this is my usual lunch place. I have had lots of things here and never had a bad meal and alway excellent service. The menu is varied with sandwiches, meat and two and some great appetisers. Today I had the shrimp po boy and a vegetable skewer. Both were on the large side and terrrific. In the past I have had everything from a hamburger or grilled chicken to their chicken nachos and everytime I was very happy with my choice. I just never seem to be in the Homewood area at night but if I do I'll update my review. I came to Oak Hill one night for trivia and had a blast! It's a dive bar in downtown Homewood that is walking distance from O'Henry's, Urban Cookhouse, and several others. They have a great drink selection as well as some lunch specials during the week. I did not get food when I came, but I tried a few drinks and they were all amazingly good. The bartender, Sue, was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. She's probably one of the most friendly bartenders I've ever interacted with... and her drinks are AMAZING. I got a Moscow mule, which I loved, and right when I was about to order a second, she asked me what flavors I liked (I like all the fruity stuff including coconut and mango), and she made something up for me that knocked my socks off. I am new to Birmingham and was looking for a sports bar so I plugged in "sports bars nearby" in my map function and Oak Hill Bar popped up. Well ... I wouldn't call this place a sports bar but it was still a fun place to party and I met several new people here. They were playing dance music and people were going crazy while the Kentucky Derby and the Stanley Cup Playoffs were on TV. I will come back here for sure. The food is actually good here too. I'm actually surprised by the number of times I've been here. It isn't a bar I would normally go to, but a good friend of mine lived nearby and Oak Hill is really the only bar in the area. So if we decided to go out somewhere and my buddy wanted to stay on his side of the mountain, we had to settle on Oak Hill. It's not a bad bar, just not exactly my style. It is small and the regulars are on the oldish side. I've been there a few times for lunch and wouldn't say it's anything to write home about, but the shrimp po' boy somehow placed second on a local radio station's "best sandwich" countdown, so maybe others are tasting something I'm not. I don't recall ever seeing any drink specials or happy hour, but I might be getting there too late. They will periodically have live music (just a guy with an acoustic) and charge an odd 3 dollar cover. In short, if you live in Homewood, want to stick close to home and are looking for a more subdued atmosphere, Oak Hill is a good idea. read more
