The Anvil is my go to place for Premier League Football. They happen to be the Liverpool Fan Club home. I happen to be a Spurs fan and they will always put the game on at least one TV. They are very welcoming. The food is really good. I usually get the wings and either an order of chips (french fries) or crisps (homemade chips with a really good dip). When they have it, they make a great sausage roll I'll get that seems to rotate with the Scotch egg. Quite a few Brits show-up and get the full English fry-up. When we arrived we were seated right away, and our server (Eon) was fantastic, offering great recommendations and very friendly. We loved our visit to The Anvil. We came to watch a little football (aka, soccer) with a pint and ended up finding a true English pub right here in Birmingham (AL). We ordered the Thai wings, burrata, and fish and chips, and everything was delicious. The wings had great flavor, the burrata was fresh and a nice change of pace, and the fish and chips were exactly what you want from a proper pub. I had a British hard cider but they also offer a nice selection of local brews. We brought our dog and sat outside, which made it even better. The patio has comfy couches and lounge chairs with TVs for watching games. Inside there is bar seating and tables, which is nice year round. It is a little on the sweeter side, though the eggs are also very good and so is there toast with any options of it? Stopped by on a Saturday at 2 PM during Alabama game so I had the place almost to myself and it was so nice. Sat outside on the outdoor patio, and the weather was perfect. I ordered the seasonal house salad, which had pecans, apples, apricot chutney, herb, goat cheese, and lemon vinaigrette. I also tried the roast chicken pot pie, which was a little misleading because it was collard greens with Kaneka sausage and a puff pastry on top, but it did have roast chicken inside and it was creamy and tasted great. Food was good, hubby had fish and chips while I went with the Chicken Tikka. A bit odd that the mushy peas were served cold! With a bit more attention to detail in the kitchen, this place would be wonderful! The fried okra pods were delicious as were the chips! Our waiter was what we've come to expect, okay and relatively efficient. My hubby had to flag down the host to refill his coke, even though our waiter walked by several times, she didn't have an eye for seeing what was needed. Cool English restaurant and pub with American fare as well as some European flair. We started with the fish dip appetizer and we really liked it. Great thin Saratoga type chips complemented it perfectly. Then I got the burger and chips (fries) which were all very good and hefty portion. They have some rarely found English beers you don't typically find in this area. I enjoyed the Tennent's Lager which is made in Scotland. Nice selection of euro, domestic, and local taps with a great bar. They also have a nice section of outside seating on good weather days. I've been to the Anvil pub once for high tea last year and it was delish! They served lots of different finger sandwiches along with pastries and tea. This time I stopped by for lunch before heading to the movie theater nearby. I started with the fish dip but I can't remember what type of fish it was. It was okay, it didn't wow me enough to try it again. I also tried the burger, which was also just okay. The patty could have used some seasoning but the fries were good. Every bite was delicious. I would order this again and again. I had leftovers and we were going to be out for a couple of hours and I really wanted to take it home. They were super nice and gave me a bag full of ice so I could put it in my cold bag in the car and have it for lunch the next day. Service was great. One of Birmingham's best kept secrets? Quite possibly. It's pretty far out Hwy 280 in the Lee Branch shopping center, but you could easily be in a London pub. The atmosphere is more than strip mall worthy, and the food is incredible. We started with the wings, and they were some of the best I've ever had. The fish and chips were incredible- probably the best in Birmingham. The chicken Leek pot pie was absolutely insanely delicious! And so dang pretty! We went to the Anvil's Wellington Wednesday which is offered on the last Wednesday of every month. They require that you reserve the Wellington at the time of booking and of course the entire menu is available so well. The Wellington was excellent!! The pastry was perfect and the beef was beautifully medium rare and a very generous portion. The Wellington was served with fingerling potatoes and a tomato compote that was unconventional but very tasty. After an early movie we walked over to relax on a coolish night. Outside dining was our choice, can I say a Good choice. We ordered drinks and 2 appetizers. Tomato soup, comes with a grilled cheese sandwich. A summer time treat, let's do it again type of good. Located in the Doug Baker shopping area, The Anvil is a refined British pub with a menu that includes seasonal ingredients and is influenced by different cuisines from across the globe. We've tried different things- the fish and chips is EXCELLENT, with perfectly fried, crispy fish and well seasoned chips. They have an afternoon tea one weekend a month, and the reservations book up quickly. The tea itself was just perfect. Located in a private room on the side of the pub, with white cloth covered tables, delicate china, classical music playing on one television and rolling pictures of the British countryside on the other, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Everything was delicious, but I think our favorites were the salmon and dill sandwiches, lemon tartlets, and a bowl of whipped herb butter to spread on our muffins. Went in for our anniversary dinner. Arrived at 7:30, they close at 10. If you close earlier fix your website. But they were already preparing for closing with the lovely aroma of bleach that dominated and burned the nostrils. Nothing like trying to enjoy a steak with a side a bleach taste. In addition they pride themselves in a unique menu each day and 3 items we tried to order were out with a total of 8 patrons there. How? Did not feel we were welcomed or appreciated, not like we arrived 10 min before closing! Wait until your patrons leave to start the bleach clean routine. I appreciate that the place is clean, but why 2.5 hours before you close? Allow your guest the enjoyment of a night out.
