I typically do not review places, but the best way I can describe this restaurant is underwhelming. For the price we paid for 2 people to eat, the food was not up to par. Fries tasted like fried fish, steak was an odd cut of meat, my wife did not even get a full meal (side salad & a potato) & the bill was still over $90. The food was exceptional. I'm very picky about my steaks because I make a phenomenal steak at home so if I'm going to pay premiums for steak, it better be at least as good as what I can make at home. We had an excellent experience on the first official night that Oak + Iron opened for business. Chanel, our server, was friendly and attentive. I had a manhattan, which was delicious - perfectly balanced although a bit light on the pour. My wife enjoyed a generous portion of Chardonnay. I started with the wedge salad, which was very flavorful, and nicely topped with dressing, bacon and tomatoes - although a bit light on the actual wedge. It was the best tasting wedge I've had in a while. She had the salmon, which she said was delicious, and I had a NY strip, which was cooked to perfection. The twice-baked potatoes were a bit overdone, but flavorful, and the broccoli wit Parmesan was very tasty. Chanel kept our water glasses filled, and checked on us multiple times to make sure we were enjoying everything. Charlene also stopped by to ensure our evening was going well, and we had a very nice conversation with her. We shared a crème brûlée for dessert, which was also delicious and prepared to perfection. The biggest delight was when the bill came: the prices were very reasonable, and the total bill was what we would expect to pay for a salad, a pizza, and a couple of drinks at other places. We have been back three times since the first visit, we've brought friends, and we've consistently had a great experience . Oak + Iron will be a regular spot for us going forward! read more

First time visiting. Atmosphere was nice and was pleasantly surprised they kept the fish tank. We ordered burgers that were over done, dry, not seasoned, and tough like they were cooked the day before. I had the side garden salad which was good. I have never ate at Oak + Iron, however I have drank here on few occasions. The drinks are way over priced for the city of Jackson. I paid $18 for a double shot or regular Crown Royal last night. Fire Keepers casino was only $12 ( now that's saying something). Not worth it in my opinion. read more

Visited for the second time. We ordered the Shrimp Po Boy, the Butter Chicken and the Chicken Tortellini. The entrees were all good. My Cesar salad was just ok, a little heavy on the dressing. Also our first visit the cocktails were excellent, done properly! I ordered the same cocktail and I was very disappointed. This time the glass was packed full of ice with barely any drink, definitely should have been shaken and not served over ice (it was correct the first time). I ordered a second different cocktail same thing, way too much ice with 2 sips of drink. My husbands cocktail was also watered down and filled to the brim with ice. Good atmosphere. As Jackson MI is located in a food desert, as most foodies in the area know, it is difficult to find a restaurant that isn't a chain or deep fried bar blecch. I used to patronize this establishment when it was a more upscale place. Apparently the new place is operated by the same owners, which makes me scratch my head. I stopped in to observe what they had done to the place, and the new iteration was disappointing. The bar is no longer set off from the rest of the restaurant, which creates too much noise. Gone are the professionally trained bartenders and classy jazz. My appetizer was ok, and the service was reasonable. There is supposedly a pedestrian "Honky Tonk" of sorts upstairs, which is fine, but it should stay upstairs-- I don't wish to dine listening to blaring, stomach-churning country music. I will not be returning soon. I don't know to whom these owners think they're catering, but one might as well go to a chain steak house. Once again, Jackson awaits dining that appeals to the culinary literate. read more
