Hidden in a back street strip mall, the only thing I didn't like about this place was trying to find it! Oak Street Cafe is the exemplar northeastern Wisconsin breakfast place. It's in a bit of an odd location but once you find it, you'll be well rewarded. The menu is straightforward with typical American breakfast food, and portions are big. If you like pancakes, one is enough- they are that big! During the week you can also get lunch if you get there around noon. Service is typically pretty quick, although they can get busy on Sundays. The prices are still decent, and you can get a nice sit down breakfast for less than a trip to McDonald's. My only issue is that they don't serve Coke products. read more

Very interesting place to eat at. I felt like I was sent back in time to a little family restaurant in a small home town. Needless to say, the place's atmosphere was not bad if you like being around people at minimum twice your age. The food though was honestly great for the price which surprised me given the clientele. I love eating here, it's a good experience every time. The service is good and the staff is very friendly. The food is always delicious and arrives quickly. I love the omelettes - the egg is perfectly thin and stuffed with ham and cheese. Most of the portions are more than generous. This is a small cafe and the customers are mostly older. There's only a few parking spots in front, however there is a parking lot across the street that always has room. If you want hot sauce you should specify that you're looking for Tabasco sauce.. otherwise they bring you buffalo sauce. read more

Nice place, breakfast & lunch spot. Its in a commercial business park type area; so for me coming from out of town; I would have never found it without Yelp. Some of the other comments referred to it as a "greasy spoon". I've been to plenty of dive diners that earn that moniker but Oak Street is a cut above that. I had one of the skillet breakfasts, plenty of food, well presented & prepared. They get bonus points in my book for having pepper shakers that actually dispense pepper without resorting to unscrewing the lid. All in all I had a good breakfast & coffee. Hubby and I went over here while we were waiting for laundry at the laundromat. We pulled up, walked in and were seated right away. Waitress approached us immediately and asked if we wanted coffee, drinks etc. She gave a us a high recommendation on the eggs benedict. I drove in from Chicago for work and had breakfast here. This is not a pseudo breakfast place like IHOP or Perkins. The eggs were good over medium, toast with real butter and the thick cut bacon was cooked perfectly. The coffee was exactly what i was looking for. A perfect cup of black coffee. I spoke to the owner Keith about the coffee and he went into great detail about their grindmaster brewer/grinder and how it is maintained/functions. This is likely why the coffee is so good. (I'm a very parsnickety person who has roasted his own coffee for years) I would recommend this place to anyone for breakfast or coffee. I haven't tried the rest of the menu, but they also have good looking dishes for lunch. I also want to add after reading some other reviews. The restaurant was packed when I went on a Saturday. The service was immediate and the food came out in minutes. I'm not sure what restaurant the other reviewers went to, I had a perfect experience! read more

The Oak Street Cafe is not a place that I think my wife and I would have found on our own without looking for a new place to try on Yelp. It is one street away from "the main drag" and nestled in a building that looks to be more suited for small businesses and offices instead of a cafe. We went in and found a table pretty easily having just beat the lunchtime crowd on the day we went. I settled on the Three Meat Omelette (bacon, ham, sausage and cheese) and my wife selected the Chicken Salad Wrap with a side of onion rings. The kitchen didn't take long at all to bring our food out to us. The omelette was full of meaty goodness with just the right amount of cheese added in to keep everything gooey and warm. My wife's wrap was so good, she asked our server if they sold the chicken salad by the quart (which they don't, unfortunately). The atmosphere is that of a diner with light conversations taking place across the open dining room. It was easy enough for the two of us to have our own conversation without there being too much noise from adjoining tables making it difficult to hear each other. This restaurant is quite literally the definition of a hidden gem. It's on a side street in a little strip mall behind Dunkin Donuts and Sidekicks. Don't let that worry you, it is a very open restaurant. My wife and I sat at the counter and they had our favorite flavored coffee (Highlander Grogg), so we both got cups of that. Altogether, brunch for the two of us came to about $20, which is not bad and the food was excellent. My wife had pancakes and she was not able to finish them because of how large they were. Four stars may be a little generous, I would say it was a solid 3.5. We came in on a Sunday after church and surprisingly were able to be seated right away. The service was fast and the food came out quickly. It seemed to be staffed by high school kids almost entirely from the wait staff to the cashier to the bussers, and they were pretty efficient overall. Everything was very standard diner breakfast fare--nothing really memorable except for the little hand filled containers of raspberry jam. It tasted like it was freshly made, not the generic Smuckers stuff. I wouldn't be opposed to eating here again, but nothing was so great that I would add it to my go-to list. read more

As far as breakfast spots go if you like cheap and quick food this is the place for you. I agree with some of the other reviews the inside reminds me of a cafeteria at an retirement community. That worked well though for this visit as I was eating breakfast with my grandpa. They do the staples well. I love their thick toast with the jam they served. I got strawberry jam and sorta wish I had the blackberry like others at my table. The veggie omelette I ordered was well made. It would have been even better without the cheese on top. It was filled with diced veggies and had good flavor. The hash browns were a little bit of a let down though. Mine were cooked but had no color on them at all. I wish they were done a tad bit more with some crisp to them. Besides that I was a little upset they only offer juice, soda and coffee. No other hot drinks to order so I had to stick with orange juice which came in an extremely small glass. Overall the food quality is good for a fast Sunday diner. I will come back. read more

We stopped in here for a late breakfast and left disappointed. The place is older and is a stereotypical "greasy spoon," which we were ok with - this is where you usually get the best food. However, all of the food was just alright and my son didn't even finish his eggs benedict, which is unheard of. Everything seemed to lack flavor, the bacon was a weird cut/consistency and was chewy, and the toast was under toasted. It served the purpose in that we didn't starve before our next meal but we won't be going back and I would recommend finding another local café to try out if you're in the area. read more

The wait staff is prompt and very fast service. They do have a good breakfast crowd which can be busy on weekends. But I recommend going here and trying their food! Breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out (except drinks. Yes, drinks are a meal) so when I'm near a diner I have to stop and get breakfast. The food was good, but the service wasn't great. The place was fairly busy for a week day and I was working, but the server didn't check in often enough. I had to waive someone down for more coffee. I was in the area for work, it was about -25 degrees (I'm not exaggerating, it was literally -25 degrees) and the parking at Oak Street Café meant walking further than I'd like to in that weather. Looks like there are maybe 5 parking spots in the parking lot, unless there's another lot in the back that I couldn't see. Breakfast diner food isn't hard to pull off, location/parking, and service are. If even the service would improve I'd go back to Oak Street when I'm in town again. read more

Oak Street Cafe did something that breakfast places can rarely do.....they stuffed me so full of food that I wasn't even able to finish! I'm a big dude, so I jumped into the Big Oak....and with a couple sausages, a couple thick cut slices of bacon, about 6 pounds of hash browns and a huge pancake....I was 5 pounds heavier after I left. Sausage and Bacon were great, hash browns could have been a little crispier, eggs were a bit runny, but the pancake was ginormous, so I was able to look past the minor issue about the eggs. First impression was of a retirement home cafeteria. The dining area was spacious and open, populated mainly by gray hairs. You seat yourself, and a server quickly arrives to give you a pot of fairly decent coffee. Service is polite enough, though we never really felt welcomed.
