Who knew that northern Ohio had a prisoner of war camp during the Civil War? Located on Johnson's…read moreIsland in Sandusky Bay, this prison camp was initially started to exclusively house Confederate officers, but soon expanded to include all ranks. From 1862 to 1865, over 10,000 prisoners passed through the 16.5 acre prison, with up to 3224 living there at any one time. Approximately 200 of those prisoners died during what the Confederates called Ohio's harsh winter conditions (interestingly, that means Johnson's Island had one of the lowest mortality rates of any Civil War prison, North or South). While the prison camp is long gone, the well cared for Confederate Stockade Cemetery remains. The one acre cemetery has 206 marble headstones and is ringed by a cast iron fence with an iron archway facing the lake (all paid for in 1890 by the state of Georgia). Following the Civil War, ownership of the cemetery reverted back to the Johnson family, where it remained until 1904 when it was purchased by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. That organization installed several monuments over the years, including a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier standing on a granite base in 1910, two monuments in 1925 commemorating the cemetery's preservation, and a set of markers in 2003 dedicated to Confederate prisoners of war. The Daughters of the Confederacy donated the cemetery to the United States Government in 1931, and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. Getting to Johnson's Island was pretty easy, as it is now connected to the mainland via a toll ($2 cash) causeway. Just follow the signs to the Confederate Cemetery, and do not worry about getting lost, as except for the cemetery, the entirety of the island is private property, and signs at every road not leading to the cemetery advise that the roads are also private property, and they are to be used exclusively by residents and their invited guests. Note that while the Confederate Stockade Cemetery is immaculately maintained, and has several plaques describing the history of the prison, it is a war cemetery, and has zero facilities whatsoever, including no benches, no tables, no picnic area, and no restrooms (the nearest public restroom is 3 miles away, back on the mainland at the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park).

I am a self-proclaimed presidential history nerd visiting from Texas. I've read a biography on…read moreevery president in order through Eisenhower, and my bucket list includes visiting where each was born and their final resting places. Of course, I also make it a point to visit presidential libraries, national historic sites, etc. I've visited dozens of locations across multiple states. THIS. PLACE. IS. INCREDIBLE. I broke my visit up into two days. Did the home tour one afternoon and the museum the next morning. Honestly, I recommend doing it that way; there is just too much otherwise. It was jaw-dropping to hear about the history of the home, Hayes' descendants who lived there so long, and the son who pushed for it to become a living monument to Hayes' life. With 95% of the home original to when Hayes lived there.... I'm not sure I've ever been to a location that can say that. From Lucy's sewing machine used to sew civil war uniforms...to beds made by prisoners in the Oriental Room...to the bed in which Rutherford and Lucy died ...the house tour is just breathtaking. Shout out to my tour guide, Bill Y., for being such a cool guy! The museum took me all of two hours to get through, and I skipped the temporary exhibits. Two solid hours if you read 75-85%. LOTS of information. But the artifacts will give you goosebumps: Hayes' Harvard diploma 1845 Hayes' Dress sword and scabbard from the war Hayes' .32 revolver 1864/65 Lucy's wedding dress The chair Hayes sat in during the inauguration. Bible on which he sworn his oath A ring containing George Washington's hair And that's just a few... The information on the contested election was perfectly clear and well executed. This place is no doubt one of the top five places I've ever been in my presidential history travels...up there with Monticello. I can't say enough...totally worth your time. Every time I visit a presidential history site... I am overwhelmed with gratitude for people like staff and volunteers at these museums. I'm grateful to all who had the foresight to preserve and maintain our history. Only negative: I thought the gift shop, although appearing full, lacked options.

I brought my son here while on a roadtrip across the U.S. I love historical sites and presidential…read morehistory so this was an easy choice for a stop, especially since it is a fairly quick detour off of Interstate 80. $20 for adults gives you access to the museum and a one hour house tour. Kids aged 6 - 12 are $5. They give discounts for military, AAA members and senior citizens, but sadly none for educators (seems this place would be perfect for U.S. history teachers). The grounds are beautiful, the history is interesting, the museum is jam packed with information (though a bit haphazardly arranged, along with some overzealous motion detection security on some of the larger items). Our tour guide for Rutherford's house (Dick) was lovely and very knowledgeable. Overall worth the money and an interesting stop on our whirlwind tour of America and all of its idiosyncratic history.

I don't know how to rate a cemetery especially one of prison and war. This is one of only two…read moreconfederate cemeteries in Ohio. I grew up 20 minutes from here and knew it existed but had never been here (that I remember). To think how young some of these men must have been and that some probably were forced to fight and die away from their families is sad, as war always is. If we don't learn from history we are destined to repeat it.... The island is private another reviewer suggests driving around to look at the houses. There are signs everywhere asking not to do so.

More history in NW Ohio…read more It took me a while to appreciate the history of NW Ohio... what with the battle of Lake Erie occuring... in Lake Erie (woah), and this confederate cemetary here (which I only discovered a few years ago). The Black Swamp history. The glass city. The area may seem bland, but the history is there. There's not much that can be said about the cemetary... It's a cemetary. Not as large as Arlington, obviously. But it sure has an impact on you when you walk in. I'm glad for the photos another user has uploaded here. The cemetary is located on Johnson's Island out at the tip of Marblehead. You have to pay $1 to use the bridge to access the island, unless you can duck through the gate behind a resident islander (or know the code). Once on the island, don't just go to the cemetary... drive around and appreciate the amazing houses on the "inner circle" inlet. Pretty wild... And don't forget to stop at the Marblehead Lighthouse, then grab a bite at Netty's Chili Dogs. =)
