Kept telling me I was next ,ladies was very rude.. and when I went back didn't even look at me just told me I had a dry socket and cleaned it and went on with my day ...I'm still in pain I don't think they know wtf they are doing !!!!!!!

Went in for a cleaning but postponed after I refused yet another full set of X-rays (done 2x in March). They got those yet from one of the other places I went but now Appalachia won't have with me as a patient. Apparently, I'm 'not a good fit' for their practice...because I questioned their original diagnosis. I think they're right; I don't want to work with a place that can't make a proper diagnosis and/or be straight with me.

I called…read morelate one afternoon and they made me an appointment the very next day and, because my situation required swift response, I was able to have the surgery only two days after that. Other offices said that it could take weeks for me to be seen for a consultation and then even longer for surgery. Dr. Johnson was the most informed of all three dentists/surgeons I had seen and was very polite and understanding. He and his staff helped guide me through diagnosis of the cyst that had developed on my jaw and what my options were for treatment. We decided I would have my third molar removed and he would extract the cyst and send it for biopsy (just a procedure, it is very unlikely the cyst will be malignant). During my consultation, he showed me X-rays of other situations exactly like mine that he had taken care of. When the time came for my surgery I really felt that I was in good, experienced hands. Although oral surgery is never fun, Dr. Johnson and his staff made the ordeal as pleasant as possible. I am still waiting for my check up, but I am sure that will go just as well as the rest of my experience has. It's worth noting that they did not bill my medical insurance, only dental, which meant that I had to pay a bit more out of pocket than expected. However, after all the trouble I had to go through to get in this office, I felt it was worth it to know that I was finally in good hands. Additionally, they were upfront with the payment as soon as I came for the consultations so there were no surprises. They accept Care Credit, which is very helpful.

After x-rays we did a gum analysis and was told I have a gum disease and that I need some type of gum/tooth cleaning. After my appointment, I got an estimate of the total price and it was $5,300 for everything. I was super shocked by the amount and asked what just the wisdom teeth extractions would cost and they said $1,200. Like what... $4,100 for a cleaning?? I was flabbergasted!

Once office found out I was going to different Dr. for extractions for the $960 they refused to send my records to them and told me I had to wait until Dr. got back in town for me to obtain my own records. I was in terrible pain and didn't want to pay another $150 for more X-rays that were already taken in April / October. Office staff could have contacted Dr. Johnson , but refused !. I contacted Dr. Johnson's office several times via phone with no call back regarding picking up my records. Dr. Johnson has an office in Powell , Tn too . That office is on Emory Rd . In addition , I contacted both offices of Dr. Johnson to speak to office manager about my situation. When I called the Powell office the staff told me office manager was in Oak Ridge office. When I called Oak Ridge office they told me she was at Powell office. Office Staff found my situation obviously to be amusing ! They don't tell the truth. Above all their not empathetic and charge outrageous amounts of money for their services. None of which I will ever pay for again. When I picked up my records before leaving their office I reviewed contents in envelope and of course not all X-ray pics were included. Office staff said that's all the records " I was allowed to give ". If their your records demand them , don't allow office staff to dictate what can or can't be given . Unbelievable experience !

Current Day: I moved to Knoxville 2 years ago, away from my old surgeon and my family dentist who have guided me through this my entire life. So, I decided I needed to find an oral surgeon who could potentially help me with my current implants or assist in any future issues I could come across. I wholeheartedly regret ever coming across the phone number of Dr. Whittaker. I called to inquire about their services and had the misfortune of speaking with Patty, the receptionist. She was condescending, rude and just horrible to deal with. She made uneducated assumptions about my current dental implants and then proceeded to insult my past surgeon. Mind you, I have not been seen here; they have no history on me as a patient and know virtually nothing about my case. Overall, I'll end with this: it's truly a shame for such a forwardly negative person to work in healthcare. As you can imagine, my past surgeries are an incredibly sensitive topic to me--having any major dental work is a painful, awful, expensive mess. So, when I'm confronted with an unqualified individual talking down to me on the phone, enough to bring me to tears, I'm certainly not one to be silent about it. I'm looking out for you, the potential patient. Find an office that is compassionate, helpful and understanding. If just speaking with this woman on the PHONE instilled me with enough fuel to post a review, I can't even imagine what it'd be like to work with her one-on-one. I'll pass. This is where Dr. Whittaker comes in. Everyone at the office was super friendly and helpful, from the receptionists to the nurses. One nurse actually dealt with me all three times I had to come in, and while I don't remember her name, she was awesome! Really quite friendly, which helped quell my fears on the day I actually got the teeth removed. Dr. Whittaker himself is the man. He was very nice, but also very professional and wise. Pretty much what you want in an oral surgeon. I have to admit, I was really nervous even during the first visit since I am a complete pansy, but the kindness exhibited from both him and the staff made me feel at ease. For the wisdom teeth removal itself, I was treated very graciously by everyone, and even given laughing gas almost immediately, just so I wouldn't be so nervous. The procedure seemed like it took a total of one second; according to my mother, it took thirty. Which, I don't know how long it usually takes, but surely this is pretty fast. I was out of there within an hour (after recovery and all) after being wheeled to my car by the nurse. I've heard many horror stories from friends and acquaintances regarding their personal wisdom teeth experience, however, I had none of these complications and I am almost certain it's because I chose the right oral surgeon. Pain was pretty much nonexistent after the first day, and I was even at work two days afterwards with little to no exhaustion or discomfort. I wasn't given dissolvable stitches in this case, so I had to go back a week after to have them removed. Dr. Whittaker seemed genuinely concerned with how I felt the whole week, making sure I had had as little pain as possible.I really can't express enough how his (as well as the one nurse's) demeanor really just made the whole experience as pleasant as it could be. If you are particularly nervous about getting your wisdom teeth removed, or if you want to have pretty much one of the best oral surgeons in Knoxville, I highly recommend this office!
