Picked up Oaktown Kabobs for dinner tonight and it was delicious!! If you haven't tried Oaktown Kabobs what are you waiting for??!! I had the chicken Mediterranean bowl, it had lettuce, tomato, cucumber, basmati rice, chicken seasoned to perfection and came with creamy cilantro and creamy spicy sauces. I also had a side of their grilled tomato...loved! So fresh and the bowl was packed with chicken, rice and veggies for only $15, amazing deal. My husband had the combo kabob plate with chicken and tri tip along with basmati rice, it comes with grilled tomato but he's not a tomato fan so we omitted it. My 8yr old had the kids chicken tenders and fries. I was so thankful they had a kid friendly menu. Lastly but definitely not least the service was top tier! When I was on my way they called to let me know their parking lot was full and to just call them and they would bring it out, so thoughtful! Thankfully I found parking and was able to come in and meet the owner who was so kind as was the lovely young woman working the front counter. Truly a 10/10. Don't sleep on this place--it's hella good. They serve a unique mix of Afghan and Mexican fusion food, and everything we ordered was delicious. We tried the lamb and chicken kebobs, the beef bowl, fries, and Sheer Chai. The lamb was the standout: incredibly juicy with a perfectly seasoned marinade. The chicken and beef were both tender and flavorful, and even the fries were packed with seasoning. The cilantro and spicy dipping sauces were excellent, and took everything up another notch. I loved the Sheer Chai too, which was traditionally flavored with cardamom and pistachio, and a lovely pink color. The owners were incredibly kind and attentive, especially since we dined in. The restaurant itself is very small and tucked into Foothill Square next to the liquor store, so it seems like most people order takeout. The food is absolutely worth the visit though. This place has popped up on Yelp for me a few times, so when I was craving Afghan food I decided to give it a try. I placed an online order for lamb kabob and chapli, but shortly after I got a call from (I'm guessing) the owner letting me know they were out of chapli. I switched to the tikkah kabob instead. The restaurant is in a pretty sketchy area, but the owner was very nice and welcoming when I picked up my order. The portions were generous with plenty of meat and rice. I did notice that some Yelp photos showed a salad included, but mine didn't come with one. I think the meal could really use some greens to balance out the heaviness of the meat, rice, and pita. The tikkah was a little on the salty side, but the lamb was good. The highlight for me was the green sauce which tasted fresh, citrusy, and cilantro-based. My partner loved it too. The pita bread, however, didn't come with any sauce. I wish it had something like hummus or a yogurt dip to go with it. If I go back, I'd want to try the chapli. Overall, it was solid but not a spot I'd make my regular since I can usually find Mediterranean or Middle Eastern food under $20 that comes with meat, rice, and salad included. Here, it looks like they charge $5 extra for a salad, and factoring in the location, I don't think I would pay that. read more

Holy hole in the wall!!! If you are looking for a delicious hole in the wall place to grab some amazing food - this is the place for you! We needed a place to grab food with our kids post-zoo trip and this hit the spot in every way. How does this place have so few reviews?! Extremely unassuming exterior, but we were very pleasantly surprised it had 5 parking spots attached to the building. Only one table inside plus two window seat areas, but it was very clean and inviting. The staff was friendly, helpful and were SO nice to our 2 and 4yo. Majority of the menu has zero spiciness which was great for our kids who still only aspire to like spicy. They had a couple takeout orders picked up while we were there but no other dine in folks (this was 6-7p on a Saturday). -pita + hummus - this is when I knew we were in for a treat. We got this as a starter to help tie hangry kids over, but hoooo boy. The pita was amazing and the hummus spices were so good. If my 4yo hadn't loved it so much I probably would've eaten it all myself before the other dishes showed up. - lamb shank was truly fall off the bone meltingly amazing. The sauce was also so good. My 4yo couldn't get enough! It came with a full plate of flavorful spiced basmati rice that my 2yo ate by the handful + perfectly crisp fresh salad. The amazing salad dressing meant I couldn't help but eat most of it... which is saying something because I'm usually averse to cucumbers. - combo kebab with chicken and steak was well cooked, moist and not dry. Our 4yo also gave the chicken a thumbs up too. While we live far away in South Bay, we will definitely be back again next zoo visit. Highly recommend as dine in or take out! Delicious kebab restaurant. We had the lamb and chicken kebab dinners, and there was enough food for four people. The meat was delicious, I really loved the lamb, and the chicken was remarkable. The guy that took our order was super nice, he took care of us when the food came out, and made sure that the order was exactly what we wanted. There's barely any sitting inside so you will likely get it to go. They make the food fresh so the wait is 15 or 20 minutes. Whenever I'm in the area, this is a great choice. read more

Their restaurant may be an entirely different story. This review is focusing on them as caterers. We waited in line for an hour and never even got to order. Once we got to the front of the line, they quit taking orders to catch up on a group of line cutters, adding to what would have been a longer wait, but we left. Oaktown Kabob had too large a menu for an apartment cookout, taking about 10 minutes per person to get a hot dog and fries, despite having 4 people working. One of the men working gave us an abandoned plate, with fries (1/10) and falafel burger (6/10). The falafel had way too much sauce and was overcooked. Worst of all, the fries were undercooked, soaked in oil, and had absorbed the spices and flavor of other food that was clearly cooked in the same pot. To improve, they could have some items prepared ahead of time, simplify their menu, have customers put on their own condiments and toppings, and have a dedicated person taking orders and monitoring the line, instead of having the person at the front trying do each job. read more

My wife, daughter, and I decided to grab a bite to eat here after a visit to the Oakland Zoo. The location was definitely a little on the sketchy side and the restaurant only had room for two tables. Don't let that fool you! The owners were extremely friendly, and took the time introduce themselves to us and explain everything on the menu. We were visiting Oakland from out of town. We just had a busy day at the Oakland zoo (great zoo btw) and decided to stop by here. We ordered three combo plates with chicken and tikkah as well as a bulani (which they made not spicy for my family). The meats were absolutely delicious. The chicken was grilled to perfection and, even though they use white meat, was not dry, even on the reheat. (We had leftovers because the portions are very generous). The tikkah, which is tritip I believe, was tender and flavorful. The rice was perfect. The only thing my wife said was that maybe the tomato should be quartered instead of halved, but that's personal preference. What stood out to me though was that while we were waiting for our food the owner kept offering us water and making sure we were comfortable. Not only that when my son, who has a tiny voice tried to talk to him, he came out from the back to listen to him. He didn't disregard him because he's a five year old, which is easy for an adult to do. It shows he really cares about his customers. Bro, you are running a wonderful business, and I saw your generosity and kindness firsthand. Don't change a thing. Also, let your mom know she raised a wonderful human. My meal from Oaktown Kabobs was fantastically delicious! Mother and Son Z, the warm, friendly, accommodating owners/operators, made every item delightful including their customer service. The hummus was lemony and tasty. The accompanying pita soft, pillowy and fresh. The three chicken breast kabobs were well seasoned, juicy, tender, generous and delectably charcoal grilled. They let me sub my rice w/tasty Spanish rice. The refreshing Mast E cucumber yogurt tasted tangy and bright, flavored with/garlic, mint and dill. The grilled whole tomato was ripe, rosy red and sweet. Two homemade cilantro, chili, vinegary, spicy green chutney/hot sauce containers were included. Resto was out of firni and Mama was sweet to make more for my dessert. Baklava was buttery, fresh and dripping w/honey. Two mints were gifted to perfectly top off and digest this amazing meal. Everything was well packaged for travel w/extra utensils and napkins. We need to support this great biz as a community so they can continue to serve and add to their varied menu of incredible food.
