    Mansaf *get*

Very good Eastern Mediterranean/Middle East eats. Serious care and effort happens here, not just workers whipping out afterthought products just to get through a day. To that I simply have to give my respects and give them a shout out. Very calm and relaxing space. Many regulars walking in picking up take-out food. There's a very kind and soft paced table service here that just reminds me of cute and quaint bistros/cafes from the days gone by. Actual dialogue between servers and patrons, questions answered, smiles passed along. A huge gap from QR code ordering and avoidance of interaction that is trying to be normalized from here on out. We ordered a couple of bottled beers, nothing craft brewed-like, just ordinary Euro/Mexican selections. I'm not as rigid as I once was, so just a good clean lager with a meal and some water is very welcoming to me. They brought nice beer glassware and asked if we wanted it poured into a glass. Sure ain't gonna turn that down, especially since it was already there. It did fit with the nice silverware, cloth napkin and candlelit table. Yet nothing was stuffy and formal, just casual locals out for a good time. Kofta Wrap ($19/4*) This wasn't mine but I did taste a piece of the kofta kebab. Theirs is a beef/lamb mix and is well mixed, almost like a firm meatloaf texture, versus a grilled burger texture. It was a good basic kofta, spiced moderately so not strong but also not bland. The inside also has a lot of lettuce, onions and cucs with a tangy yogurt sauce. I did taste a big hint of mint in my bite which I'm assuming are big hits of herbs with the salad and not the kofta itself. And it was wrapped nice and tight with even distribution so every bite got every element. I look for that in every wrap whether a burrito, med wrap and even stuffed pitas. Beef Shawarma Plate ($20/4.5*) Pretty heavily spiced, where you can feel the texture of the warming spice paste in each bite. A little strong but at least it gave you ride to another culture. Properly shaved pieces where the meat texture was still there and nothing like processed gyro meat. Served with yellow rice and an awesome salad with a tangy dressing. I especially loved the tangy green chutney that was so vibrantly herbaceous, a mint and cilantro punch that brightened the spice ladened shawarma. And I also loved the grilled tomatoes and onion garnish on top of the shawarma, just gave it a nice chef's touch. Mansaf ($25/5*) I have never tried this but as soon as I saw it, I had to try it. I was told it was probably Jordan's most famous dish. Super tender cubes of lamb, with a touch of fat on some pieces which I love. Totally swimming in this glorious creamy sauce made of dried yogurt and tumeric. The sauce was mild (spice wise), quite tangy with a noticeable milky flavor. Served again with rice but this time topped with toasted almond slivers, which added a nice texural contrast. I was also told that this was usually made with bone-in lamb, but think they did it this way to make it more restaurant friendly, maybe even American friendly. But I was just imagining if this would have been a bone-in lamb shank, I would have loved it even more. Great dish! Still have to try their extensive kabob offerings and an assortment of their mezzes whether falafels, hummus and other dips. Lots of work yet still ahead of me, but I just know that this is gonna be a smooth and fun ride. Bet.

    Kunefe

We've been at Tio's numerous times in the past year, and one of the things to be said is that the food is consistently great. My favorite is the seafood kebab, and my husband's is the lamb kebab. Also, no one makes better falafel than Tio's! The surprise today, is that they introduced one of my top deserts: kunefe (many ways to spell it). It is crispy on the outside, buttery, salty and gooey on the inside. And the best part? The hot syrup is served on the side, so I can control thw amount i pour on it. The service is top notch, attentive without being overwhelming. There was no music playing today, so no need to talk loud, which made for a very pleasant early dinner.

Spot is a small hole in the wall and when I say small there aren't many tables so not great for huge parties. There wasn't really room for a stroller either but parking isn't the best on a busy night so we had to stroller my sleeping son in. But since there was no parking we had to wake him up and take him out. The workers were nice though. Our waitress brought a plate of hummus to my son. I can see why this place is highly rated our food was soo good. My brother in law and my husband debated ordering another dish to take home for later. The mansaf was sooo tender and not gamey at all. We also got the beeg and chicken kebaby plate with rice. The chicken was so so and a bit dry but the beef was tender and the sauce amped it up even more. Pricing was very reasonable for the portion sizes.

Been at Kaiser for two days so eating something from outside of the hospital was nice. Food is good. Had the chicken kebab and also the chicken shawarma. Thought the shawarma was better. It was quick pick up and people were nice. The place is a little small.

*** Review for Takeout - solid 3.5 stars *** Tio's Meditteranean was my sister's choice for takeout. Kebabs and wraps were fine and comparable to other spots with grilled meats. Their babaghanouge of smoked eggplant, tahini, garlic, oil was my favorite with a nice balance of flavors and texture. Next time I'll try their sauteed items and/or dine in to truly enjoy what others are raving about. The Mansaf (National dish of Jordan) with basmati rice, almonds and lamb cooked in a creamy yogurt sauce will be my next choice and of course repeat the delicious babaghanouge! Generous portions and pricing reasonable Average pricing: wraps $16/grilled items $21. Located on E14th (near San Leandro Police Dept) with street parking only

Nice juicy falafel wrap and the falafel rice combo specially in their veg tepsi curry/sauce was delicious. Good service and staff. Nice location.

    Lentil Soup

What a great lil gem in SL. Delicious Mediterranean food and prices are not bad. We got the lentil soup to start and it's a hearty bowl of soup. Tbh I should have shared with my bf cuz I was definitely starting to get full after the soup My bf got the beef shawarma wrap - I thought this was just okay. The beef kinda reminded me of a broken down burger patty. It wasn't bad but not my fav I got the lamb and beef shawarma wrap and both me and my bf agreed this was the better wrap. My bf is not usually a fan of lamb bc of the gaminess but he still preferred this one over the beef one. We asked for the fries to come out extra crispy and wowwww were they crispy. So good. I ate all my fries lol. Will definitely be returning here soon!

Tio's Mediterranean Grill hands down, is a San Leandro staple! Located on busy E 14th St, but never had trouble finding street parking. The service is efficient and fairly quick. The restaurant itself isn't too large, but feels very homey. I got the house salad, minus the cheese, added beef kebab and it was so fire!! The mint on top was the addition I never knew I needed to a salad. The olives, red onions, thick cucumber slices, tomatoes, and roasted veggies that came along with the kebab was just perfection. I loved that the server asked if requesting to minus the cheese was due to preference or dairy restrictions-- just in case, because some meats are seasoned with yoghurt. That's a very important thing to point out just in case one was. So thank you!!

Lamb and beef combo with salad
    Billy L.

This is definitely one of my top three favorite restaurants in San Leandro. Everything we have tried here has been really good. On this visit we started with the falafel as an appetizer, and they were excellent. They came out piping hot, soft in the middle, and perfectly crumbly on the outside. For my main dish, I ordered the lamb and beef combo. The salad on the side was light and refreshing, and the meats were tender and cooked exactly the way I requested. I like that they actually ask how you want your meats cooked. One of the things I appreciate most about this restaurant is that they serve Mansaf. I have tried this dish at Dish Dash in Sunnyvale and Mazra in San Bruno, but this place makes it the best. You also get the most meat for your money here. The service is always outstanding. The staff check in on you often, and I really like that. Plus, it is only a few minutes from my house which makes it an easy favorite.

Tio's truly a hidden gem in San Leandro, a best kept secret only locals know about. The high Yelp rating and number of reviews made us curious. We drove by twice to check it out but only to drive away. The store front is dark and curtains drawn so it was not inviting. Third time's a charm and we were determined to make it inside. We walked in and *SURPRISE* it was hoppin on a Friday night. It felt homey and comfortable where everyone knows each other. The staff were welcoming and efficient. Within minutes of getting a table, the place was full. Service was attentive and warm. We had the best server ever (self proclaimed) We ordered beef & lamb combo, Tepsi with Kofta, beef shawarma. Oh my! The meat was tender & juicy. The Tepsi was so delicious and flavorful (with a slight kick). The beef shawarma was just perfect. Everything was so good and plentiful that we left happy and satisfied

    Hummus

My colleague and I were so pleased to enjoy a second visit to Tio's Mediterranean Grill. It had been far too long since our first dining experience here and we were so excited to be seated and served so quickly and attentively. The Tio's crew exceeded all of our expectations. From the world renowned hummus to the calming atmosphere and top-notch service, this was an afternoon that will be thinking of fondly until our next return to the premier destination within San Leandro, California. Thank you, Juan and the rest of the team for taking such great care of us and brightening our day yet again. This is a must try if you are ever in the Bay Area, absolutely excellent.

    Veggie sampler
    Tim H.

5 stars. Fully deserved. Ordered via doordash for pickup. Food was ready per estimated time. Ordered the lamb kebab $24 and veggie sampler $16. Price are the same in store vs doordash. They accommodated every special instruction/request I wrote. Kudos for that. Veggie sampler was delicious and came with pita bread. Hummus, babaganoush, falafels, salad were all excellent. I substituted the tabouli. I generally don't care for falafels but these were really good. Lamb kebab pieces were perfectly cooked, generous portion, high quality, no chewy inedible pieces at all. Yellow rice was fluffy. Salad was fresh. Small/medium sized restaurant. Indoor seating only Overall, very good food, reasonably priced, generous portions, good service. You would never expect it due to the location, but one of the best in the bay

    Baklava ($7)
    Cyn K.

Overview: Great Mediterranean food, nice service, no complaints at all ---- Lamb Kebab ($22): - choice of white or yellow saffron rice - choice of salad or fries - filling portion - lamb has great flavor and juicy - they ask you how well done you want the meat cooked Baklava ($7): - sweet and delicious - crunchy phyllo - pistachio and the date syrup were perfect ---- Notes: - lots of inside seating - parking can be a bit tough, there's also metered parking - nice and quiet ambiance, able to hear conversations easy - the service was quick and friendly - checked up on us during the meal ---- Overall: a great Mediterranean restaurant, a bit expensive but worth it, lamb and baklava are so delicious

This place has popped up on Yelp for me a few times, so when I was craving Afghan food I decided to…read moregive it a try. I placed an online order for lamb kabob and chapli, but shortly after I got a call from (I'm guessing) the owner letting me know they were out of chapli. I switched to the tikkah kabob instead. The restaurant is in a pretty sketchy area, but the owner was very nice and welcoming when I picked up my order. The portions were generous with plenty of meat and rice. I did notice that some Yelp photos showed a salad included, but mine didn't come with one. I think the meal could really use some greens to balance out the heaviness of the meat, rice, and pita. The tikkah was a little on the salty side, but the lamb was good. The highlight for me was the green sauce which tasted fresh, citrusy, and cilantro-based. My partner loved it too. The pita bread, however, didn't come with any sauce. I wish it had something like hummus or a yogurt dip to go with it. If I go back, I'd want to try the chapli. Overall, it was solid but not a spot I'd make my regular since I can usually find Mediterranean or Middle Eastern food under $20 that comes with meat, rice, and salad included. Here, it looks like they charge $5 extra for a salad, and factoring in the location, I don't think I would pay that.

We needed a place to grab food with our kids post-zoo trip and this hit the spot in every way. How does this place have so few reviews?! Extremely unassuming exterior, but we were very pleasantly surprised it had 5 parking spots attached to the building. Only one table inside plus two window seat areas, but it was very clean and inviting. The staff was friendly, helpful and were SO nice to our 2 and 4yo. Majority of the menu has zero spiciness which was great for our kids who still only aspire to like spicy. They had a couple takeout orders picked up while we were there but no other dine in folks (this was 6-7p on a Saturday). -pita + hummus - this is when I knew we were in for a treat. We got this as a starter to help tie hangry kids over, but hoooo boy. The pita was amazing and the hummus spices were so good. If my 4yo hadn't loved it so much I probably would've eaten it all myself before the other dishes showed up. - lamb shank was truly fall off the bone meltingly amazing. The sauce was also so good. My 4yo couldn't get enough! It came with a full plate of flavorful spiced basmati rice that my 2yo ate by the handful + perfectly crisp fresh salad. The amazing salad dressing meant I couldn't help but eat most of it... which is saying something because I'm usually averse to cucumbers. - combo kebab with chicken and steak was well cooked, moist and not dry. Our 4yo also gave the chicken a thumbs up too. While we live far away in South Bay, we will definitely be back again next zoo visit. Highly recommend as dine in or take out! Looking forward to trying more dishes next visit, maybe a dessert too!

I most recently tried their peppermint mocha and lavender latte, both of which I got iced. They were delicious!! I'm a really big fan of minty chocolatey drinks and I thought the peppermint mocha was done really well for an iced version. The lavender latte was actually a pleasant surprise for me! I wasn't expecting to like it so much and the lavender and coffee were really balanced. The chicken gyro was good as well! It came with a sauce and was packed with veggies, which I appreciate. I do wish they had cucumbers in their gyros too though. Overall great experience :)

It's a bit tight inside, but there is seating of various configurations. It's pretty easy to find what you need, like utensils, napkins, & water. There is free Wi-Fi & power strips, which are appreciated. The service is friendly and quick. My orders typically complete within 5-10 minutes. The drinks are pretty good. If you've never had any sort of pink chai, then I'd suggest the Pink Chai Latte. I had mine hot, and it was nicely foamed & sweetened. I also enjoyed the Peppermint Mocha, though the flavors were a bit subtler than I'd prefer. The food is fine. There aren't too many Mediterranean options in town (that I know), but you can probably find better if you go farther out. I liked the pita & yogurt in the Gyros (Beef & Lamb) Wrap, but the actual meat & veggies were just adequate. The Saffron Chicken Platter was a lot saucier & more tangy than I was prepared for.. an interesting dish but not one I'd get again.
