We have never been here, but when I was in the area for my hair appointment, my stylist told me to check out Tio's. She said everything is good and generously portioned. We met our friend and ordered a shared plate item which was a mixed grill with chicken and steak. Yes, it was generously portioned but I wished I got my own so I an have leftovers the next day. The steak was cooked to perfection as well as the chicken. Service is excellent and the cost was reasonable. When we got here, we were the early Linner group, but when we left, the place was packed. This was our second visit to Tio's and we decided to explore the menu a bit more. Our first visit was excellent, we shared the veggie sampler and the chicken shawarma wrap. Highly recommended both. This visit we tried the mansaf and tepsi with salmon. My fiance is Palestinian and was excited to see if the mansaf tasted like his mom's. He ate the dish with great appreciation as it indeed did remind him of the dish he ate back home. I really enjoyed the vibrancy and flavor of the tepsi. I'm an eggplant and tomato fan so it really hit the spot. My fiance also loved the falafel and said it tasted like his mom's as well! The highlight of our meal was the knafeh!! we have searched for a good version all over the bay. This one is the very best!! The service at Tio's is beyond. From the first visit we were welcomed and felt like we came home for a meal with family. Juan has an amazing story we really enjoyed learning about him and his restaurant. Came here after visiting the Oakland zoo just based off of the Yelp reviews and wow this place exceeded expectations! Servers were friendly and food was excellent. We ordered hummus for the table, iced tea, mint hot tea, and a Greek salad with chicken and falafel. First, the mint tea came out with fresh mint leaves and it was so fragrant and comforting. I love having freshly prepared herbs in my tea. Food was so beautifully prepared,and presented, fresh and tasted great. Chicken was tender and expertly seasoned. Very good Eastern Mediterranean/Middle East eats. Serious care and effort happens here, not just workers whipping out afterthought products just to get through a day. To that I simply have to give my respects and give them a shout out. Very calm and relaxing space. Many regulars walking in picking up take-out food. There's a very kind and soft paced table service here that just reminds me of cute and quaint bistros/cafes from the days gone by. Actual dialogue between servers and patrons, questions answered, smiles passed along. A huge gap from QR code ordering and avoidance of interaction that is trying to be normalized from here on out. We ordered a couple of bottled beers, nothing craft brewed-like, just ordinary Euro/Mexican selections. I'm not as rigid as I once was, so just a good clean lager with a meal and some water is very welcoming to me. They brought nice beer glassware and asked if we wanted it poured into a glass. Sure ain't gonna turn that down, especially since it was already there. It did fit with the nice silverware, cloth napkin and candlelit table. Yet nothing was stuffy and formal, just casual locals out for a good time. Kofta Wrap ($19/4*) This wasn't mine but I did taste a piece of the kofta kebab. Theirs is a beef/lamb mix and is well mixed, almost like a firm meatloaf texture, versus a grilled burger texture. It was a good basic kofta, spiced moderately so not strong but also not bland. The inside also has a lot of lettuce, onions and cucs with a tangy yogurt sauce. I did taste a big hint of mint in my bite which I'm assuming are big hits of herbs with the salad and not the kofta itself. And it was wrapped nice and tight with even distribution so every bite got every element. I look for that in every wrap whether a burrito, med wrap and even stuffed pitas. Beef Shawarma Plate ($20/4.5*) Pretty heavily spiced, where you can feel the texture of the warming spice paste in each bite. A little strong but at least it gave you ride to another culture. Properly shaved pieces where the meat texture was still there and nothing like processed gyro meat. Served with yellow rice and an awesome salad with a tangy dressing. I especially loved the tangy green chutney that was so vibrantly herbaceous, a mint and cilantro punch that brightened the spice ladened shawarma. And I also loved the grilled tomatoes and onion garnish on top of the shawarma, just gave it a nice chef's touch. Mansaf ($25/5*) I have never tried this but as soon as I saw it, I had to try it. I was told it was probably Jordan's most famous dish. Super tender cubes of lamb, with a touch of fat on some pieces which I love. Totally swimming in this glorious creamy sauce made of dried yogurt and tumeric. The sauce was mild (spice wise), quite tangy with a noticeable milky flavor. Served again with rice but this time topped with toasted almond slivers, which added a nice texural contrast. I was also told that this was usually made with bone-in lamb, but think they did it this way to make it more restaurant friendly, maybe even American friendly. But I was just imagining if this would have been a bone-in lamb shank, I would have loved it even more. Great dish! Still have to try their extensive kabob offerings and an assortment of their mezzes whether falafels, hummus and other dips. There wasn't really room for a stroller either but parking isn't the best on a busy night so we had to stroller my sleeping son in. I can see why this place is highly rated our food was soo good. My brother in law and my husband debated ordering another dish to take home for later. The mansaf was sooo tender and not gamey at all. We've been at Tio's numerous times in the past year, and one of the things to be said is that the food is consistently great. My favorite is the seafood kebab, and my husband's is the lamb kebab. Also, no one makes better falafel than Tio's! The surprise today, is that they introduced one of my top deserts: kunefe (many ways to spell it). It is crispy on the outside, buttery, salty and gooey on the inside. And the best part? The hot syrup is served on the side, so I can control thw amount i pour on it. The service is top notch, attentive without being overwhelming. There was no music playing today, so no need to talk loud, which made for a very pleasant early dinner. read more

The mint on top was the addition I never knew I needed to a salad. The olives, red onions, thick cucumber slices, tomatoes, and roasted veggies that came along with the kebab was just perfection. I loved that the server asked if requesting to minus the cheese was due to preference or dairy restrictions-- just in case, because some meats are seasoned with yoghurt. This is definitely one of my top three favorite restaurants in San Leandro. Everything we have tried here has been really good. On this visit we started with the falafel as an appetizer, and they were excellent. They came out piping hot, soft in the middle, and perfectly crumbly on the outside. For my main dish, I ordered the lamb and beef combo. The salad on the side was light and refreshing, and the meats were tender and cooked exactly the way I requested. I like that they actually ask how you want your meats cooked. One of the things I appreciate most about this restaurant is that they serve Mansaf. I have tried this dish at Dish Dash in Sunnyvale and Mazra in San Bruno, but this place makes it the best. You also get the most meat for your money here. The service is always outstanding. The staff check in on you often, and I really like that. Plus, it is only a few minutes from my house which makes it an easy favorite. read more

I am middle eastern and I know good falafel and this is the closest I have had in recent years to what I consider authentic falafel. I wasn't crazy about the mango drink but I love mango and always have to atleast try everything mango. Listen if you haven't tried this place please do yourself a favor and go try them out. I've been there twice and the food and service are consistently good. At dinner service there is on average during the weekend about a 20-30 min wait. During the week for lunch service I was able to walk in and be seated. We had the Tepsi Kufta, Falafel, and a Kofta kebab wrap. The falafel are a must. They were do fresh, piping hot, a soft in the middle. The Tepsi dishes come with a lot of eggplant sauce that is so tasty and filling, a mound of rice in the middle and 3 pieces of Kofta meat. The presentation is on point, the food is fresh and made to order (not microwaved) and the flavor mix harmoniously. My bf tried the wrap and thought it was excellent. We came here on a weekday evening and were seated right away at a table with a "reserved" placard even thing. We ordered two wraps with fries - one with falafel and one with chicken. It took a bit for the food to come out but everything was pretty good but I think it was missing an exceptional quality to it. For example, the wraps had a lot of falafel and chicken in it, but hardly other toppings inside. By the end of it, we kind of got tired of the wrap. The fries were seasoned well though and very tasty, though they are cooked well done. The food is reasonably portioned -- a little more than you need at least for me but not too much for bigger appetites. There could have been a bit more fries. The service was fast and friendly and although the restaurant is small, they try to make it a very intimate ambiance with the lights dim and it not too loud in the restaurant. My favorite Mediterranean place is in SF but this is officially my favorite East Bay option. The veggie sampler (takeout) was phenomenal. I ate it immediately in the car which was nice because the falafal were so hot and fresh and so herby and green and delicious. Food: falafel wrap - good, generous portion size, nice lavash bread filed with fried falafels, romaine, tomato and hummus, to flavorful, falafel had a nice crisp exterior, interior was herby and had a nice fluffy texture, veggies added freshness. I had the chicken shawarma and hummus with pita bread. I thought the shawarma was delicious. Fresh tasting. The 3 sauces that come with it are delicious. My daughter thought the shawarma had too much veggies but I thought it was very well balanced. Pour the hot sauce on it and it's delicious. The hummus has crunchy chickpeas that are so original. I've never had that before. When I walked into the establishment it was fancy for San Leandro. A super cute date night spot.
