I was reading about pocket forests for biodiversity and thinking about how planting more natives around weed-laden yard would be beneficial, and also cooling in this concrete jungle which is an urban heat center. If you could do something about it with native plants that support pollinators and more, why not? Whether you have pots/containers, your apartment's shared space, a community garden, your/neighbor's yard - or volunteer to adopt a traffic circle in Berkeley and plant natives in there. I popped by this nursery for the first time a few days ago. I felt super bad because I inadvertently showed up 10 minutes before closing, but I was still helped! None of the workers rushed me, and the wonderful cashier who rung me up even patiently answered a few of my questions. Oaktown is a small nursery, but it has a nice selection of native plants. The workers are all very friendly and knowledgeable, and the plants are reasonably priced. I'll be stopping by again to fill up on milkweed ;-) read more

First time here. Easy to find and lots of parking. The selection is hit or miss, possibly since it is late in the season. No tags on plants, so that is a bummer. The cashier rang me up so quickly that I was late to ask about the 10% off for CNPS members. The cashier got a little snarky which was uncalled for. He said he would give me credit back in cash, but I guess I walked away too fast and didn't feel like going back. read more

Was walking around the neighborhood for exercise and stumbled upon this nifty hidden gem! This out-of-the-way nursery is all open-air, and makes for a really nice destination to browse a vast selection of native plants. The nursery has everything from perennials to shrubs to small budding trees. There were two employees present when I visited. One was watering the plants and another popped up from a fenced off area in the back to greet us after a while. I didn't purchase anything, but I saw some sweet looking yarrows so I'll probably be back in the future! All in all, a nice place in Berkeley to go to if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Berkeley. Just be wary of the loud freight trains that roll by because the nursery is right by some train tracks. read more

Amazing selection of California natives with inventory that changes frequently. Their descriptions are so helpful, and the staff are wonderful. Plants are healthy - the buckwheat, currants, salvias, and grasses have been very successful in my challenging space (dry, clay, deer). I love that they offer small sizes ($5 or less) so that I can experiment before committing. I've started with plugs of coyote brush and lupine that have really thrived. read more

What makes this nursery stick out is it provides updated inventory online almost every day, has the best prices I've seen, and has incredible selection. I've probably purchased more than 30 plants from this nursery and they have all been healthy and become well-established in my garden. Oaktown is THE place to buy all of the wonderful plants native to our area. Rare plants, shade plants, sun plants, climbing plants, beautifully blooming plants--they've got it all. I'd been really wanting to start a pollinator garden on the porch and steps of my Berkeley apartment, which is what initially brought me to explore this nursery. I was truly blown away by their selection and ended up leaving with *too* many plants. Now, all of the bees, birds and butterflies I see flying around in search of sustenance will be more than happy! And I couldn't be happier that there's a local nursery that caters to our native flora and fauna. Are you a plant nerd? Do you want all the butterflies in your yard? You should be frequenting this wonderful place. You get the feeling like you're wandering through someone's passion project. The people love what they do. It looks assembled from craft supplies and spare wood found in a barn. It all adds to the charm since the staff know their plants and know gardening. Every plant I've bought here has struggled (compared to uc botanical garden nursery and Annie's annuals where things I've bought thrive) they sold me a "matilija poppy" but it was actually a prickly poppy- my rookie mistake that I figured out as it died. The employees were snobs and couldn't be bothered and were incredulous when I asked them a question. Maybe you have to be a specific demographic for them to help you. I do like that they support native plants. That about it. read more

We stumbled onto this place after eating at Viks, and what a great find! We were specifically looking for native plants to make terrariums (terraria?) for our wedding, and here was this nursery specializing in native plants! The people are super nice, and the prices are reasonable. The variety is pretty big, and near the entrance are bushes of golden poppies that looked so beautiful and mesmerizing. They also seem to do habitat restoration, which is super cool. The catch is that they only open 2 days a week, I think Friday and Saturday. For any need or interest in native plants, this is the place to go. read more

I love this nursery! They have healthy, vibrant species that are really hard to find at other local nurseries (for CA natives). They've got a wider selection, too. If I find something I'm looking for at another nursery, it'll be one or two sad potted ones but this nursery has a wider range. Their prices are wonderfully affordable; everyone was helpful there. I am definitely returning here for plants! I wish that area had better street parking, and that the nursery had more hours but I understand it must be financially challenging to staff a business. In the meantime, I've just go to take a bit of time out of my usual schedule to see them - it's worth the trouble! read more

I bought a Roger's Red grapevine from Oaktown in 2015. It is supposed to produce lot's of grapes that birds love. My vine is healthy but has never produced a single blossom or grape in over 4 years. I called them to get help and they said mine was cloned from one they have there that does not regularly fruit. I asked what I could do to get it to fruit and she suggested I look in a book to see what might be done. I suggested they look in the book and tell me what might be done as a matter of service, since I bought it from them. She said "I'm just grow'in em". So don't expect any after-sale help or service from Oaktown. read more

Wow! What a gem! I found this nursery hiding near the railroad tracks that separate West Berkeley from Aquatic Park. The display garden is a beautiful tribute to many local, native plants. The staff can tell you everything from which ones are drought-tolerant to which ones are sun or shade loving. I even found an edible plant: woodland strawberry! and one for making hot tea: yerba buena! What a hidden gem! My husband and I converted our lawn to a drought tolerant garden featuring mostly CA native plants. It took me a while to discover Oaktown Natives, but once I did, I found several species I was having a hard time finding elsewhere. We wound up getting half our plants for the project there. The owner was very informative and even tossed in a free annual each time we made a purchase. And to top it off, this place is simply beautiful and peaceful. It's not easy to get native plants that are local, so for several years I have appreciated Oaktown Native Plant Nursery for providing relevant plants to draw in the local wildlife. Their plants are much more reliable for bringing "the buzz" to my garden... bugs, bees, butterflies, birds -- much more so than native CA plants from Annie's. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful with all my questions, and provide interesting species to try throughout the year -- at really reasonable prices. read more

We went there recently because we needed some particular plants that Yerba Buena Nursery in Half Moon Bay did not have in stock. It is small but offers a great variety of annuals and perennials. They had exactly what we needed and the prices are quite reasonable given the fact some of these plants are DIFFICULT to locate. I did not catch her name but find the lady who wears glasses; I believe she is the Manager. She shared some facts about the plants which were really helpful when it came time to transplant them all into the ground. She's very friendly. Will definitely return for more inventory. read more

My Go-to nursery for native restorations and infill! Kristen is so very knowledgeable - I just ask. She contract grew a lovely whack of pickleweed that is thriving on the shoreline in SSF with intertidal plants she also grew and recommended. I look forward to more native installations so I can work with her again. I love to go pick up plant material so I can see what else is growing! Discovered this place through a fortuitous web search. I'm hot on the project of redoing my backyard in water wise California natives / other drought tolerant plants, and this nursery had SO many of the plants that I was looking for. When I looked, the website inventory was up to date (and accurate!), which was really helpful in knowing whether it was worth the drive. Prices are great, there was tons of selection, and the staff was very patient and helpful as I kept dragging plants out, putting them back, and them choosing them again.
