I've been going to Westbrae Nursery for years - it's my favorite place to buy healthy plants and plant pots. The staff there are super helpful and friendly. I've called them before to inquire about native milkweed for monarch caterpillars and their staff took the time to explain how much milkweed I'd likely need, the timing/lifecycle of monarch caterpillars, etc; they were super informative and helpful. I also really love supporting an employee-owned co-op. read more

Plants are my thing and finding new nurseries aligns with that passion. I've seen this place for years and not sure why I waited so long to visit. The set up is tranquil and feels like an escape. My best friend and I spent about two hours looking at everything and trying to rationalize what is responsible spending lol. We both work so gardening can become overwhelming If tending to a lot of plants. I ended up getting some flowers and vegetables and fertilizer. Ever since that visit I've been looking at my garden to see where else I can plant in my yard. The prices were reasonable and the variety of plants was truly spectacular. Plant Paradise!!! I love coming to this nursery even just to "window shop." They have so many rare and beautiful plants. The plants are not Home Depot cheap but they aren't Home Depot cheap...does that make sense? Go give them a visit even if it's just to enjoy some sunshine and plants. read more

A few days ago, I made a purchase from Westbrae that had a little "hiccup." Unfortunately, this "hiccup" had a devastating impact on a certain section of my garden, and I was very sad and confused. I brought this issue up with Westbrae, and they immediately investigated. They soon found the cause of the problem, apologized, and together we found a solution. Not once was I treated like a hysterical customer who needed to be brushed off, and I want to thank the staff for their exceptional service when it came to resolving this matter. Came here on Easter Sunday, I always pass by and finally had the chance to look at the plants. Even though the Nursery is small I LOVE the selection of succulents/ vegetables and fruits. They had so many variety of succulents. I go to a lot of nurseries in the Bay Area and I really liked their vegetable selection. I like the strain of peppers/ eggplants and tomatoes they use that I usually don't find anywhere else. I ended up getting the Sriracha pepper and Thai Chili Plants. Having descriptions of each plant really helped me choose which one is the best for me, I also ended leaving with two different blueberry plants! I like that they're open until 5:30 PM 7-days a week because it gives me enough time to get here after work. Staff seems friendly and knowledgeable enough when I've asked questions. I really wanted to love this nursery because it's walkable to our house and we just moved to the area; however, I purchased 2 plants from them (Bird of Paradise and Sensation Peace Lily). I immediately sprayed both with insecticidal soap upon coming home and both had pests! One had spider mites and the other looked like a tiny baby roach. I thankfully was able to save the plants. I'm glad I isolated them before putting them with the rest of my plants. Yikes! Despite that, I came back to ask them to repot 3 plants that were outgrowing their pots (purchased from a different store) and realized too late that they didn't sell plastic nursery pots. I ended up buying the best pots I could find (they were good quality and really nice) at a reasonable price. All 3 of those plants ended up having fungus gnats! I think the soil they used was infested and they didn't realize it. I'm pretty good about spraying my plants with insecticidal soap to prevent pests and we've never had them in our house until I re-potted those 3 plants. On the upside, they do have a good selection of indoor plants, great selection of gardening tools, etc. Just be careful when making your plant purchase and thoroughly inspect, isolate, and treat your plants before introducing them to the rest of your plant collection. read more

For instance, Berkeley Horticultural nearby is huge, somewhat overwhelming, and custom-made for people with not only green thumbs but green brains. Flowerland on Solano is for gardeners who want to make sure they have furniture that matches the colors in their plants. This more modest-size nursery comes across as more manageable within my own limited organic purview. It's probably targeted to people like me who have intermittent interests in doing something good for the planet. I have to admit I possess no botanical knowledge, so I'm grateful that the blue flag means the plant is drought tolerant and the red flag identifies it's resistant to peckish deer. I love this place. I used to go to the big nurseries, but they just don't have the soul that these little ones do. This one has all sorts of stuff in such a small area. I was so happy to see all the little plant selections that I took home. These guys like to work as a team. When one doesn't know the answer they go get somebody that does. How easy is that? I locked out on my initial visit and there was a new girl working by in the counter, first day. She was very polite and I could tell. It was part of her personality that she is a people people. She listened carefully to my needs and made sure that the right people came to assist me when I had specific questions. She wasn't familiar with. Good for her. I had questions bad orchids and they repotted one of mine. Give me a recommendation for another and I bought a bunch of tomato plants and so on to take out for my summer fruit and vegetable. I am a handicapped and it was a little difficult for me to manoeuvre in the shop and they gladly carried my stuff out to my car for me without any Prompting. I started coming here when I got married 3 years ago and I will not go to another place unless they don't have it and I don't think. That's gonna happen. Great sunny day to shop for some new pots and maybe another succulent or two. Westbrae Nursery is a cute spot, they regulated the amount of customers that can go in so don't be discouraged by the line out front. We've all gotta have room for social distancing! Everyone was so nice and welcoming as well. So many plants and pots and gardening supplies everywhere you look. I ended up buying two glass orbs that made for displaying my old and new succulents very nicely. Enjoyed it here, especially with the plant nursery being mostly outside. This is a great place to get plants and gardening supplies. Their stuff is kind of pricey but worthwhile because their plants hold up so well. They use high-quality soil and healthy plant stock. I have gotten both ornamentals and edibles here and always been pleased. They have a good variety of vegetable starts and I have even gotten some hard-to-find more exotic items like purple bok choy here. I got my Albion variety strawberry plants from here which produced the most delicious and luscious berries for years. This place is not super large but it is well organized. Staff is friendly but you have to approach them. Parking can be hard to find on busy Gilman Street. read more

There is a variety of indoor and outdoor plants as well as fair priced pots. It was nice to see a wide range of herbs, fruits, and vegetables to choose from. I wanted to love this place but my partner and I have made 3 purchases here over the course of 7 months and twice we have been disappointed with sick/ infected plants. The first time was a $200ish purchase of a palm which was purchased around Christmas and quarantined indoors. Upon return from a holiday trip, we found it to have a pretty nasty mealybug infestation. There were no other plants in the room with that plant nor was it repotted. None of our plants had mealybugs and haven't had any since then. That palm came to our home with that infestation. The nursery did give store credit but they didn't have a replacement and haven't had that type of palm since then. Fast forward to April, my partner was shopping for some annuals and I was looking for some perennials. I found what I thought was the perfect plant. There were exactly two left but upon closer inspection, I could see the fine webs and tiny red dots of a spider mite infestation. I took the plants up to the register and told the woman in an effort to a. find out if they had any healthy ones of that variety which i could purchase and b. protect the other plants in the nursery. Her response-- well, they didn't have any more but beyond that there was barely one. Idk... concern or maybe gratitude could have been responses; even the appearance of interest would've been more appropriate but to seem that disinterested doesn't really impart much buyer confidence. Third time....I purchased some vegetable plants, against my better judgement, as there were indications of spider mites on some of the neighboring plants. Thank God, I kept them quarantined because they've been a nightmare. I do not recommend this nursery but If you do decide to purchase from here, I would highly recommend thoroughly inspecting any plants purchased, check the surrounding plants as well for infestations, and quarantine any plants purchased. You may still end up with a project on your hands or a be disappointment. Best of luck. read more

Love that this is only 15 minutes away from home & it's minutes away from Philz Coffee. They have many different collection of plants from indoor to outdoor such as air purifying plants to lovely flowers, and even ground coverings. They also have organic soil, bug repellents, and pots for sale. If you like to grow your own vegetables/flowers, they also have a variety of seeds you can choose from. FYI: Due to the COVID-19 provisions, they have markings outside in place to remind you to social distance. They will not let you in without a face mask so be sure to wear yours when you go to visit. Visited for the first time this Saturday. What a great nursery! Gorgeous plants, brimming with health and a wonderful indoor and outdoor selection to choose from. Some of the staff didn't seem particularly people friendly. Maybe they're more into plants than people. I can appreciate that considering the wonderful condition of the greenery and flowers. I intended to buy a single fern if I found a healthy one I liked, however I went a little bit Gatsby. I ended up with two ferns, three succulents, a pretty houseplant, and three lovely pots. I could spend the better part of a paycheck here. I'll be back but not too often for the sake of my wallet. read more

I make the rounds at various nurseries in town & make it here from time to time. They don't have much in the rare exotic department but a great selection of house plants, seeds, flowers, veggies, tools, food, etc. friendly people & healthy plants. A while back I was on the hunt for a Large Tasmanian Tree Fern (Dicksonia Anartica) as a gift for my mother one who had one which was stolen. This turned out to be a much more difficult task than I anticipated. Some nurseries had little ones, more than one just told me to get the one of species of faster growing & more readily available Australian Tree Ferns as most people can't tell the difference. Westbrae said they could get me one. As my mom's birthday got closer I hadn't heard back from them & was getting worried. When I explained the situation the owner made it a priority to personally select the biggest nicest specimen from their supplier & get it to me in time. After repotting the thing exploded in size & has become a true monster!! read more

I waited at the register for a long time, couldn't find an employee. I teach preschool so I'm good with waiting but woah. I went in the back office and politely asked if someone could ring me up. The guy who came out was so salty I felt like I was swimming in the ocean. Muttering under his breath, deep sighs with my two seemingly idiotic questions, as if I'm the stupidest person on earth because I couldn't find all the prices in this apocalyptic wind today. Basically I just spent $30 on some veggies with a heavy side of attitude for no reason. Next time I'll go back to Berkeley Horticulture. They are so helpful, so patient and always so respectful. Visiting family nearby from my home more than 2 hours away, I sought out a local nursery to see what was on offer locally. I was impressed by the quality and selection of plants at Westbrae and purchased native perennials not readily available where I live. Staff members were friendly and informative. A great experience, but I was truly impressed when I got home and looked at the receipt - I hadn't known that Westbrae Nursery is an employee-owned co-op! Way to go, folks! My son is a student who is in school and was bussing tables locally.to earn money . My family have been residents in north Berkeley since 1970 . We like to support local small businesses . My son purchased a ficus for $200 here and really is quite knowledgeable about plants . The leaves have been falling out considerably and he and my 80 year old mom brought it back to see if they would exchange it for a healthier ficus . They said no - apparently they don't stand by their merchandise . Bought a """natural"""" insecticide for my Fiddle leaf fig and other 2 small indoor plants at Westbrae Nursery. I was supposed to buy Neem oil but the guy at the store suggested this insecticide to kill the Mealybugs that were on my plants. I used according to the instructions, read it multiple times because I never used that type before, and a few days later I noticed that all the beautiful new growth on my fiddle leaf were burned and falling off, the other two small indoor plants were both loosing their leafs. Now, a few weeks later the older leafs on my ficus are also falling. It basically killed the 3 plants I applied it to, and before applying it, they were sooooo beautiful, with new growths and looking pretty healthy besides the annoying bugs that wouldn't go away. Went to the store and they refunded me, but weren't even a bit concerned that a product they sold and worse RECOMMENDED killed my plants. The staff is not friendly even when you are buying, just imagine how it is when you are returning something. read more

I feel like such a grown up, shopping for indoor plants. Westbrae has a glorious selection -- I went in for one, and walked away with three. Just couldn't resist all those lush leaves and exotic colors. Prices seemed reasonable for fairly mature plants. I only wish they provided more info on caring for your plants when you take them home. We are new to ALL forms of plant care, and having some literature to help me keep them alive would have been ideal. The staff person who helped us didn't know much about the specific plants we purchased, and directed us to check online for care info. I was slightly bummed (though, of course, found plenty of info online). We came here for some plants that would help improve the air quality a bit in our apartment. The Indoor Plants section had a lot of nice options, and eventually we got a peace lily and broadleaf lady palm (along with some beautiful pots and soil). The cashier was very helpful in explaining the level of water and sunlight they would need. The prices were probably not as cheap as at a big home improvement store, but selection is good and everything is fairly easy to locate (I've gotten pretty lost at some other nurseries).
