I went today to check some plants, I loved the variety of plants they have. I found and bought a bunch of Dahlias bulbs, the price was reasonable. But I noticed I was being followed, at least the guy should be discreet. Don't let me notice, he was watching and following me. But if you're white, and love plants they have an amazing variety. I will rated this place with 3 stars, because I saved lots of money buying the Dahlias bulbs from them. read more

Many beautiful and often unusual plants here. Prices sky high. Difficult to navigate the space. Workers friendly but sparse. Got a nice succulent and immediately attempted to plant it in the ground. I handled it delicately, banging on the outside of the given nursery pot to ease it out. Turns out the plant was freshly transplanted w/shallow roots. The rest of the soil just dropped everywhere. Luckily I was able to save it, but it left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Paid the 6" price for a 4" plant. If you buy plants, you know what I mean. read more

Can't believe that this nursery is 100 year old. It is located in a convenient, almost residential area and features an exquisite, photogenic shade roof. Street parking is somewhat challenging but manageable with a short walk. Prices of most items are above average but the plants look awfully healthy and very well-taken care of. Great place with good selection of a variety of plants. It is quite a large nursery with a large selection from indoor to mostly outdoor plants. I love coming here during the seasons to see what they have switched out. You have to come early or they sell out! Street parking is a bit difficult but we haven't had any issues on weekends finding a spot nearby. Employees here have always been friendly and helpful. read more

I always enjoy to visit this nursery. They have exotic plants. If you love Japanese maple and camellia; they have great selections. You would not seen them in any other nurseries. Prices are reasonable as they sell babies and young trees. Their inventories are moving. Come early in Spring to add you collections when the weather is nice and cool. Get ready to plant weeks before Summer heat arrives. Customer service is exceptional. Parking is always full, so I have to park several blocks away. Even though you would not seen anyone around-as soon as you pull your car-there are associates who will help to put the trees in your car. They are very helpful and polite. They notice me when I come by with my dog. They nicknamed her "the lamb" as she look like a little lamb. They walkie talkie their co-worker and tell them that they see we came by again. We were there 3 times a week and bought many plants. April 7, 2024 Came by and bought a Japanese Maple and a Wisteria. Last chance to shop and planting before the summer starts. The staffs notice when I came and asked my dog. I didn't bring my dog this time. As always they are very customer oriented. This my favorite nursery to add my plants collections. read more

Great nursery. There are a lot of good ones in this area, but this one has one of the larger selections of fruit trees. They have a bit of everything if you're looking for something specific, as well as a decently sized collection of pots, soil, and gardening tools available for purchase. Pricing is fair. Parking will be on the street as it's tucked into a neighborhood along with Monterey market and a few other shops. For fruit trees I saw various varieties of figs, mandarins, kiwis, plums, cherries, etc. They also had a good amount of berries, including golden raspberries, and a few exotic fruits as well. I was looking for a Puya Alpestris and they had quite a few available here. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Fantastic local business with rare plants that you won't find anywhere else. I've gotten many compliments on the plants I've purchased here. Each visit here is like a treasure hunt. The staff here are so knowledgeable and friendly. I've called in with very specific questions and they really take the time to investigate even if they won't make a dime from it. It really shows that they are treated well here and passionate about what they do. Some other reviews point out that their prices are high, but you get what you pay for. Many basic plants can be purchased for about half the price at Home Depot. I love Home Depot and have been purchasing plants regularly from them for 10+ years, but my track record is that about half of the plants survive - this includes even drought hardy plants like lavender. I used to think this was because I don't have a green thumb. However, every single plant I've purchased here (about 2 trees, 3 shrubs, and many perennials) survived! Transplantation is a stressful process and these plants are hardy because they're well taken care of. Also, they offer a 10% senior discount! read more

Today after lunch I stopped by Berkeley Hort. Hope wasn't there, as it was her day off. Another nice woman helped me. She had a soft European accent and a name that was unfamiliar to me. She found my rhodies and gave me a senior discount. She called Marcelus to help me out to the car. I'm sure I'm misspelling hs name. Marcelus was wonderful too, friendly. He has been working there since 2004. He admired the color of my car. Nina and I had discussed the smoke bush at lunch. I didn't want a 5 gallon pot. She encouraged me to call Westbrae and Flowerland. I decided to stop by Westbrae since it was on my way to Huey's to drop off my laundry. Westbrae only had 5 gallons too. When I got home I called Flowerland w/ the same result. Evidently that's all the growers are delivering this time of year. Tomorrow I will call UC Botanical Garden since they grow their own plants and we'll see. I don't remember what time of year I bout my last one as it was decades ago from Westbrae. read more

Amazing selection but make sure your wallet is prepared! Learned of this nursery after asking around friend groups for a source of rarer and less common Japanese maples to help my home landscaping stand out from the rest. Many suggested here and they were not wrong. While Home Depot had 3 varieties to choose from, Berkeley Horticultural came in HARD. Easily 10x the amount of variety that Home Depot had and in different sizes. Many many varieties of Japanese maples. I ended up spending a good hour choosing before finally settling on 3 maples when I originally came in only needing 1! Rose selection is similarly large- many rare and uncommon varieties to choose from. But be forewarned, you will not leave with a rose plant without paying at least $65! Their pricing is definitely upmarket but it is worth it given the amount of selection. Customer service is great, I knew what I needed but many happy faces asked me whether I needed help and provided encouraging comment on my selections. Plenty of carts and baskets for customers to use. Well staffed cashier areas so lines are never a problem. Coming for visit, as with most Berkeley businesses, be aware there is no parking lot and street parking only. It is definitely contentious due to the popular Monterey Market being next door so please be prepared to be patient and for a walk. There is a loading area and staff available when you are ready. Carts can also be taken to your car parked nearby if you desire but be sure to return them. read more

Recommended to me by several folks when I asked for a good place to go to get my husband a "birthday tree" for the house. Don't ask me, dude just really wanted a tree in the house. I think the SIP is getting to him. Anyway, I didn't want to just swing by a home depot, I wanted a fun place to stroll around with the kid to make a day of it. Well we walked out of there with a gorgeous rubber tree plant, but also some burrito tail and fishhook succulents for our bathroom, a hanging pilea aquamarine because it was cute, some mint, some thyme, some trays/pots, soil, and a venus fly trap because come on who doesn't need that. Our bill was nuts, but we're happy with our purchases and service was good when we asked all about kid/dog toxicity, best options for our windows, and making sure the tree was loaded into the car with care. Take note on the hours since the line gets crazy long when it's toward closing, especially as they are limiting the number of people inside. Oh and make sure you pee first! After a long trek across the bridge I found the bathrooms closed off to the public and had to wait in line at the grocery store around the corner which had a pretty gnarly bathroom. read more

This place is my Disneyland. Plants that I have seen in fancy gardens and magazines can be found here as well as more common ones. They are not cheap- my plants were $14.95 each. Plant Selection- It does not have a lot of house plants to choose from, but if you are a gardener then this is the place for you. Customer Service- The staff and employees are very friendly and wander around the nursery taking care of plants. They will answer your questions and lead you to where you can find your desired plant. Cost- Quite expensive. $40 for a plant that almost has nothing in the pot. One of the most expensive nurseries I've been to so far. As for the pots, one hanging pot was almost 20 dollars! Extras- I loved that they had AQUATIC plants as well and even a pond with Koi fish. read more

On Google + Yelp, they mentioned that the nursery was open at 8:30a, I came at 8:45 and saw the gate unlocked and few people walking around looking like they were shopping around. I went in and just started looking around. About 5 min later, a man aggressively rushed me out of the nursery and scolded me on my way out. Hours should be updated on Google/Yelp to prevent this! Won't be coming back after this experience unfortunately, it was way too early in the morning for that. read more

Love this place. I always find unique plants and pots for my garden. During covid, I was warned lines wrap around the corner in the afternoon so I decided to come in the morning. I have been trying to find a place that sells plants that are safe for pets (with a a well priced ceramic pot to hold it) but there are quite a few SHITTY sites (Leon and George, super overpriced and the owners are rude) and nurseries. However, that is not the case here. Located in North Berkeley, next to Monterey Market (parking might be a little hard). I got two baby spider plants and the white ceramic pots for $17 and the location is vast. There are fruit trees that I wanted, but alas since I do not have a backyard, it would be a waste. The fish pond was super cute and the workers are helpful to direct me to where the spider plant was located. Overall, this is one my my new favorite nurseries. read more

Let's start this review off with some basic facts. Get to Berkeley Horticulture early. And bring plenty of money or a healthy card. Why? We'll get to those in time. Berkeley Horticulture is buried deep in Berkeley and actually based right within a quiet neighborhood - quite the contrast to other places that may exist in a busy, corporate environment. Who knows, maybe this quiet place contributes to the overall health and quality of the plants (I know I sure don't like listening to busy traffic all day). Because this is a neighborhood though, parking comes at quite the premium. Thus the main reason for getting here early, otherwise you'll be parking way over wherever. The other reason for early could be so as to get a better variety of plants, but their stock levels don't seem to make that a big issue. Bring plenty of money. The plants aren't exactly cheap, but good things often don't come cheap. Also you are bound to see more than what you came for, so be prepared to spend but spend with a smile when you leave. The plants and items here are top notch. The assistance you receive is knowledgeable and of good quality, and you'll enjoy roaming about the beautiful and peaceful grounds. Ugh, I've had plenty of good experiences at BHN before the pandemic, but they are an example of a business that just doesn't have Covid-era shopping figured out. They do have high-quality products and knowledgeable staff, but expect a long wait for everything. The business is an entire city block, but there's only one entrance. Almost everything is outdoors, but customers are not allowed to enter the buildings, which completely blocks access to the other areas of the store. And many essentials like seeds are kept inside, which is off limits. Until the restrictions are lifted, I will shop elsewhere for my garden needs. Bummer. read more

I live in a hermetically sealed loft with not even a single terra cotta flower pot in sight. However, when I was an East Bay homeowner making my garden grow, this was the place I frequented the most to make my backyard look presentable. That's why when a friend asked me recently for a recommendation on where to get healthy plants, I took her over here. It allows me to live vicariously through other people's purported green thumbs. Sure, there are plenty of acceptable nurseries in San Francisco, but I think this one is worthy of a transbay trek because they maximize their two acres for an abundance of foliage. I've been a sporadic customer since my college days, and their knowledgeable staff never fails me. As a nesting newbie, I've also become obsessed with Berkeley Hort. I go here to get quickie gardening knowledge and for quality plants and trees. This is where I learned about the different types of deer grass, planting poppies, and unique types of shrubbery (don't roll your eyes). I never write negative reviews especially for a local businesses, but this is a form of discrimination, and other disabled people need to know this place isn't an accessible or safe place for us to shop. Simply the best large nursery around - for non-natives although they do have a fair number of natives too. always good stock and very kind people there. When someone comes to my nursery for something we don't have, i send them to Berkely Hort. Drove out a rainy grey day and was treated to this gem of a nursery. they have miniature fruit trees....planted in the ground. The:staff was helpful, gave clear directions and even helped me get the trees securely in the suv...with plastic wrapping. Was able to find miniature white peach & fig tree.
