It's officially spring, and my Mrs is in the garden mode. She was looking to see this nursery for a while! Got a flower, a jalapeño plant and a succulent for a great value!!!! Service was cool, selection was great, and if you want to buy bigger things they have wagons and things like that so you don't struggle around the place or to your car. Yarrow Nursery is the sister store to Broadway Terrace Nursery and have a common owner. Both are on small plots of land in the Oakland Hills and feature nice selections of healthy plants in 4", gallon and larger sizes, as well as nicely curated collections of indoor plants and pottery. I like visiting rustic Yarrow and walking through the crunchy gravel walkways to see their latest offerings, which often include items you can't get at Broadway Terrace or anywhere else. Yarrow also has beautiful high-end outdoor furniture, outdoor pillows and cushions, a larger selection of fruits and vegetables, hanging plants and supplies. I can't stop thinking about our trip to Yarrow! What a wonderful, sweet, and thoughtful local nursery. The BEST part?? They have a Make-Your-Own succulent bar where you can pick out your own plants and planter, then they provide rocks, soil, and other items to beautify the finished product. PRO TIP: you are free to bring your own planter or container! We made a whole family trip up there and I can't wait to go back. It pains me to have to write this review because Yarrow is in my neighborhood and I want to support them. I had high hopes for this nursery since they moved here and wanted to place a large order for my project. I visited three times and was initially told they would try to find a specific plant for me and follow up. Unfortunately, they never got back to me. When I called to follow up today, I was told that they would only reach out if they found the plant--otherwise, I wouldn't hear anything. Wanting to move forward, I found a wholesale supplier that had the plant and let the nursery know, hoping they could order it for me. Instead of working with me, the man I spoke with on the phone dismissed my request. When I expressed that I needed to start my project and couldn't wait indefinitely, I was told that if I needed to go elsewhere, that was fine with them. I understand that nurseries can be busy, but good customer service means communication and effort, especially for a large order. Sadly, this experience has made it clear that they are not interested in working with serious buyers. This is so disappointing for our neighborhood. read more

Yarrow Nursery is one of the most enchanting nurseries I've ever been to. It's secluded up in the Oakland Hills and completely engulfed by nature. Even if you don't plan on buying plants immediately, it's worth making a trip to this nursery just to see it in all its glory. Past being a beautiful sight, they're a wonderful small business with great customer service (Helena and Daniel are AMAZING!!). We love their plant selection and are always eager to scoop up the native species they have. We also decided to stick with Yarrow and Broadway (their sister nursery) for our recent project converting our median from concrete to a shaded area with trees and native plants to help the local wildlife. Highly recommend their beautiful selection of trees, native plants (especially the manzanitas, sages, and ceanothuses) and their soil amendments/micro bark (will post pictures once we get a bit more growth from the smaller natives we planted adjacent to the trees). We're thankful we get to support this wonderful small business in our neighborhood. Highly recommend and we look forward to completing more projects in the future with both Yarrow and their sister nursery, Broadway! read more

My friend and I decided to go plant store hopping in Oakland and came across this nursery. First thing I noticed was the layout was hella cute and done well indoor and outdoor. Unfortunately I can't say the people we came across were that friendly as others had mentioned. I don't think anyone really acknowledged us. As far as variety goes, they did have a good selection but nothing crazy crazy rare. Because we've gone to several places in Oakland I do have to say this particular spot was one of the priciest so I didn't end up taking any plant bbs home. read more

This is a lovely nursery hidden next to a creek on Thornhill. When you are there it feels like you are in someone's beautiful garden. Helena was so helpful and knowledgeable. Absolutely lovely nursery. I'm a big gardener and I love having this place in the neighborhood. It's tucked in a beautiful neighborhood surrounded by redwoods, and they always have a great selection of veggie starts, herbs, and flowers. Big succulent and ornamental section as well, and houseplants inside. Super friendly staff. Highly recommend visiting and supporting! Yarrow is beautiful. I love the layout, with winding paths through trees and available-for-purchase plants, plus an indoor building for more decor and indoor friendly plants. The staff was very helpful on a busy Saturday, both coming up to check in and answering our many questions. They have a great variety of tiny plants to large ones. I loved the succulent section with such a great variety to choose from in different sizes. Their herbs also were fairly broad, with many varieties of mint, oregano, basil, etc. And when one wasn't present, the staff told us when it would be restocked. I've been coming to this magical and beautiful nursery for nearly two years, and have bought several plants. However, I recently had a very disappointing experience. I bought a total of six Lantana plants - from two different growers. After two weeks three plants are thriving and three (from a different grower) are dying. I returned to Yarrow to explain the situation and brought photos, expecting some kind of refund or replacement. The salesperson who had sold me the plants insisted that my three plants were not dying, and I should cut them way back, stating it is very hard to kill Lantana. She wasn't the least bit interested in knowing the names of the growers. I'll probably return to Yarrow, but will be less likely to buy. read more

I love nurseries and live just up the hill from this one. I've had nothing but great experiences here but my latest (and last) experience has turned me off for good. I had my four year old and two year old with me, who both love looking at plants. After being here for about 5 minutes, my four year old has to use the bathroom. Anyone who knows kids knows that when they have to go, they HAVE TO GO. I wrangle both of them up to the counter and beg the two women standing around to let him use the bathroom. Look, I get it. It's not a public bathroom, you don't want people in it. I'm not asking for me, who should know to use the bathroom before leaving the house. She looks and me and says, no. Go to the cafe down the street. Long story short, thanks so much to the awful woman who made me drag my screaming four year old out to the side of Thornhill (he was upset he had to leave since he loves the plants) to squat over our travel potty in the middle of traffic. A little empathy in a situation like that would have gone a long way. So I'll be shopping elsewhere. read more

I recently discovered this place and I can't stop coming here. It's a true urban oasis. Everything is so well laid out, it really makes me want to buy one of everything. However, it is not inexpensive. I really want one of those wire meshy looking chairs, for example. So far, I have focused on the herb section and buying potting soil. We live near the nursery and have been going there off and on for the last 10 years when it was Thornhill Nursery. Let me first say that the location and grounds are amazing, and the staff was really friendly and helpful! However, we recently bought a couple plants for our front yard, which were relatively expensive, and they both started dying within the first week! After a couple weeks of trying to revive them, my wife took a picture in and they told her they were likely overwatered. They didn't offer an exchange. My wife bought another flowering plant to replace one of them, and it too died within a week! We have a hill full of plants, many from Home Depot or Ace, but some from Thornhill, and have never had plants die like this. HD had an open return policy when things like this happen, and as Yarrow does not seem too, we can't recommend it and aren't likely to purchase plants there. read more

A uniquely beautiful local nursery. I love coming here since it's so peaceful and nestled under the redwoods and greenery in Montclair. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. I visit to get speciality plants and plants for my food garden. They seems to always have a $5 off deal or coupon. They will even special order plants/trees for you. Nurseries are always a bit more expensive but you get quality product and service and it's great to support the local small businesses. I will frequent this nursery for years to come. read more

This place is awesome! So cute nestled on Thornhill Dr amongst the trees. Really cool and vibrant plants and succulents! They even have a "pot your own plant" station where my wife and I potted our own combination of succulents in a pot we liked with custom additions. This is our new go to for gardening. My 3 yo son and I spent a lovely morning picking out plants for our garden here. There's a great selection of plants that are easy to find. The staff were helpful and friendly.
