DISCLAIMER: They're currently moving to a full restaurant location... so that might have contributed to the medicore experience we had. Their grocery store is 80% out of stock, with only some spices and a few fridge items left. This place used to be a 5 star, but the last time we went the food was a bit lacking. We used to love to get their lengua tacos, but it wasn't on their online menu anymore so we settled for the campechanos (steak and chorizo) tacos, al pastor burrito, and a side of chips and guac. - The chips were great. They tasted like they were freshly fried. Guac was pretty good overall. - The al pastor burrito had great flavor, but where was the meat? - The campechonos tacos were mediocre at best. The meat was dry and not very flavorful (the salsa verde saved it, but it was quite spicy!) The service was great though. The lady at the front was nice and tried to converse even though her English wasn't great. They have little candies at the front for 4/$1. I got a few including watermelon chili & strawberry chili. If you like tajin, you'll love these. I'm really hoping this was a one off and their new restaurant is as good as they used to be, but for now I'll hold off on going back. read more

great little authentic spot! tried steak tacos, carnitas burrito, green chicken enchiladas (a hint of heat) and guac... all VERY VERY good. steak meat was super tender and fresh, cooked just right.... carnitas were tender, moist, not greasy, and flavored without being too salty green enchiladas had a good amount of meat and a nice balance of flavor.... guac is a good sized portion, bright and lemony. that said.... we visited on a monday evening. service was both friendly and helpful... we ordered to go but dine-in customers came in, online orders came in, pick-up services came in.... we waited a good while. order ahead if you want it ready sooner :) also, parking is tight on the streets nearby, lots of pedestrians. read more

Hole in the wall restaurant in the back of a corner store. Tasty guacamole! Loved the Al Pastor tacos, it had a bit of a kick to it- the pineapples added a good sweetness. This was my first time trying Tlayuda Oaxaquena and the portion is HUGE- feeds 2 people. I think the chorrizo was my favorite meat on the tortilla. Loved the seasoning on the marinated pork. There is a lot of beans on the tortilla. The green Chile sauce that comes with this dish is pretty spicy but goes well on it. I would describe the place as a cute, semi hole in the wall. Very unassuming from the street, but much bigger inside than I originally thought it would be. The place is very clean and cheery. Our waitress was great, very helpful, and our food came out quickly. Speaking of the food, everything was delicious! Loved it all! We ordered one of each of three tacos. Lengua, Cecina, and Chapulines. They were all really good. I liked the chapulines a lot, but my husband wasn't a huge fan because he doesn't love the smoky chipotle flavor. He preferred the lengua. And we both enjoyed the cecina. We also ordered one huitlacoche huarache, one carnitas sope, and one tinga tostada. Everything was delicious. They also brought two different sauces for us. It has been a while since I visited Oaxaquena Triqui, and since then they moved across the street to a much larger dining area. The retail store area is gone now, and it's all dine and or take out. They do delivery through a few services as well. Service was top notch, but it helps to speak a bit of Spanish. Of course, the food is why we came, and it was just as good as I remembered it. One of the only places in the area to get huitlacoche, also known as corn smut. A bit of a delicacy, and a favorite of ours. They also have lengua, cecina, and chapulines. The crickets weren't my favorite of the three, but my wife loved them. The cecina had a great flavor, but for me, the lengua was the winner. They have a wide enough selection to please anyone. Prices have gone up since the old place, but so have labor, energy, and meat costs, so it wasn't unexpected. It's still a very reasonable cost to have a great meal. read more

After hearing MANY rave reviews of Oaxaqueña Triqui, we finally made our way there for our biweekly (or, let's be honest... weekly) tradition of takeout (instead of dine-in thanks to months of COVID). This place is the real deal. We opted to order from GrubHub and pickup because the up charge for delivery was so steep! I'm glad we went there physically though-- the front is a little convenience store with assorted wares (everything from frozen tortillas to some traditional looking Mexican bracelets). A young woman greeted us and ran back to grab our food. The person who came out to give us our food pronounced my name in a way I've only heard my argentine relatives say it ("mar-SAY-la") and it instantly felt like home. Apologies in advance for the photos which I snapped after we had already dug into our food. We got: Enchiladas de mole: SUPER spicy, but natillas incredibly flavorful. My bf is a spice god, and even he had to take a few breaks. Smokey, warm, and delicious, a must- try for anyone who wants real mole. enchiladas verdes: just like the mole ones, but less spicy and really bright. chips, guacamole and salsa: delicious, probably the best guacamole I've had in my life, but next time we'll opt out of this because it was $10.50 for not too much of anything except the salsa which is a green salsa (same one on the green enchiladas). chicken huaraches: simple. A huge homemade tortilla, topped with refried beans, heaps of shredded chicken, lettuce, pico de Gallo, and cotija cheese/sour cream. It was not spicy at all and honestly just really delicious. That homemade corn tortilla will ruin all other tortillas for me.. it actually tasted like PART of the dish instead of just a vehicle for the dish. For anyone who is coming here with someone looking for something just plain filling and tasty, this is the thing. Overall: yes. We will be back. Probably later this month. I have to say "A-OK" as they say with 3 stars. Albany has been void of a place like this, and I'm not surprised that many give it top ratings, considering it is probably their first taste of something like this. Fortunately, I have lived in Mexican and Tex Mex country, so I know a little bit about great Mexican taqueria food. This is very similar to the taquerias they have on every corner in Mexico. There are some really good ones, some so-so, and some pretty bad. I would rate this one on the scale of the so-so. I had the beef surprise taco, and I was not surprised with the quality of beef. Too much gristle in the beef, which is sign of cheap cuts. Also, too much cilantro, and not enough spice. The really good taquerias season and grill the beef to perfection as that is the base of a great taco. We also tried the guacamole, which isn't hard to make when you mush Avocados, limes, and some onions together. That's pretty much all it was. The spicy cheese doodles were a nice touch, but the small avocado stem or cap as others call it, that we found in our guacamole, was not pleasant, especially since my wife bit into it and could have cracked her tooth. This is not a part of guacamole recipes. I make my own, and it is not hard to remove the stem prior to preparing. I really think they could do better, and from what I hear, they have improved, but some of the comments on inconsistent pricing are concerning. Obviously, perfection was and still is lacking here, and why I find it hard to even consider the 5 stars of perfection that everyone else gives. Maybe when the novelty of cricket tacos wears off, and a really good taqueria opens up in Albany, people here who have never really had good taqueria food, will realize this is just A-OK. read more

I had high hopes for restaurant. My MIL lives in Oaxaca, so I know authentic/good Oaxacan food. I've read the other reviews and I believe that there is a ton of potential. However, this meal was a salt lick. We started with chips and guacamole. Very good, but salty. I ordered the enchiladas with a mole negro sauce. It was much spicier than mile negro typically is. There are always those hidden little out of the way restaurants which once you discover, you don't want to share, lest they become too popular. Well, that's not too much of a concern here because this place already seems to be discovered. When I strolled in for a late lunch around two o'clock on a Saturday afternoon, every table was occupied. Fortunately, the place pushes such a community vibe, that I didn't feel weird asking the bearded gentleman sitting alone at one of the four four-tops if I could join him at his table. It was also busy in the kitchen. I wasn't quite sure how this place operated. But you walk in the door, make your way to the restaurant in the back, and place your order through the window to the kitchen. Food comes out, and you pay at the grocery's cash register. Easy peasy. So, how about the food? Before Saturday, I had never eaten a cricket. Now, I've eaten a whole pile of them. And not only that, but I'm ready to go back for more. They are crunchy, well spiced, and delicious in a taco. At first I feared they would have gooey insides, but these crickets are teeny tiny critters. They are like the veal of crickets. Except instead of being all tender, they are almost nothing but exoskeleton with plenty of nooks and crannies for spices to dwell. The steak taco was fine, and I did enjoy the seasoning on the al pastor, but it was still not the al pastor of my dreams. It's hard to find the al pastor of my dreams. I'm a bit spoiled on that front. But part of falling in love with a taqueria is figuring out what they do well, and which taco fillings are their top choices. That kind of knowledge takes time. And after this first outing, I'm going to commit to putting in that time. That will involve going out and ordering three tacos at a time. But one of those tacos will always be a cricket taco. Because... crickets. Yum. I do wish that there was some kind of salsa roja or salsa verde on the table for squeezing onto the tacos. They do however provide some bottles of Mexican hot sauce. The fellow at my table asked about a spicier option than the one that was in the dining room, and he was told to take any bottle from the grocery shelf that he wanted to use. He was delighted. I thought it was a great move. But it was still not what I wanted. Perhaps, on a day when the kitchen isn't quite as overwhelmed, there may be salsa verde. I've seen a picture of tacos with salsa verde on them. Maybe you just have to know to ask. Oh, and one last thing. There were no carnitas. Which is fine. Not every place has every taco filling. We ordered guac, salsa and chips as a side, and the guac had more lime than I've ever experienced in restaurant guac, and I loved it. The green salsa is lip-searing hot, and I loved it. Do not even think about bypassing the Tres Leches cake: it is the sweet and perfect end to a sweet and perfect meal. Did I mention that I loved it? This isn't a grocery store with a restaurant in the back. it's more of a restaurant with some functions of a Mexican grocery store in the back, like money transfers. In any case, the food was excellent. Everything was homemade from the tortillas to the salsa roja to the agua de tamarindo. I walked in around 9:30 am. I ordered the Omlete Mexicana. None of the ham and cheese affair you might expect, but filled with onions, tomatoes, and raw jalapeños which gave it quite a spark, as did the fresh salsa roja I put on top. It came with rice and beans and 3 freshly made tortillas. The agua de tamarindo was unusually good. It had some deep flavor, I cdn't id: cinnamon? Maybe just true tamarind. Easily the best I've had. I love the soda version like Jarritos, but this was something unique and special. Service was reasonable and unobtrusive. I was the only restaurant customer, so it wasn't busy. I think much of their business is takeout but I can hardly judge by this one experience. Price was reasonable for the quality and freshness though the omlete wasn't huge. My friend and I were in the mood for Mexican food, "authentic" or otherwise (neither of us have been to Mexico before), and Yelp led us here. It is literally a hole in the wall in the back of the store in a rough part of town. But, it was cutely appointed with about a half-dozen tables. The service was by only one woman that we saw, but she was super friendly. We were asked if we wanted chips and salsa or guac to start, and we picked the salsa. It was salsa verde and my friend said it was very spicy. I am not a fan of the vegetal green salsa so I didn't touch it much. We were both surprised to find we were charged $4.50 for it on the bill. Also, the waitress never asked once if we wanted something to drink during the meal. After a while, we got bottled drinks out of the cooler. I ordered the chicken mole enchiladas ($12), and a side chorizo taco ($2). Tacos are small, maybe 4" in diameter, and come with scant toppings of onion and cilantro. Any additional topping (lettuce, tomato, sour cream, etc.) is $.50 each, per taco. Mine was orderd without onion and they added it anyway but quickly corrected it. The waitress carried a pad but never wrote anything down, which might have avoided this. My chicken mole was excellent, with deep, rich flavors that helped cover up the overcooked chicken inside. The side of reddish rice was plain and unseasoned. It was red. Similar to the flavorless yellow "fried rice" you get at some Chinese restaurants. My friend ordered 6 tacos over the course of the meal. All had upgraded L/T/SC, which meant each taco was between $3-4. They had a discount system if you ordered 3 of the same type, but it wasn't in the menu. She seemed pleased with them and the one I tried was good. She ordered some without onion, but they never offered to substitute one of the extra toppings for free. I love churros, so when I noticed them on the menu when ordered my meal. A place like this probably made the best churros, right? I didn't notice the price. When I ordered dessert later, I asked the waitress how many came in an order. She said "some people get 2, or 3, and they are 6 for $10. I ordered 3 to share with my friend. They turned out to be pre-frozen ones served with some dots of instant whipped cream from a can on the side. Without a fork, you had to hold the hot churro and scoop up watery whipped cream before it slid off or melted. They had very little flavor (not much sugar, no cinnamon, no salt) and I was very disappointed. Then I saw the bill of $7.50 for the three. Ouch! In all, our meal was $54 before tip (which they didn't leave a spot on the receipt for). Was it good food? Yeah, it was. But, we got nickle and dimed every spot along the way. I could have asked "How much is that" for everything, but that really comes across as a miser at a small mom and pop restaurant. The real heartache came on the way home when my friend said "We could have gone to Moe's." We would have spent about a third of what we did here. Was the food 3x as good here? For an unexpected restaurant, at the back of a convenience store (essentially), Oaxaquena was the real-deal Mexican I hope and dream of. While working on one of our properties, we stopped here unexpectedly for lunch. Though we were a bit skeptical at first, we ended up enjoying the whole experience. This place has a few tables, and the sweet server came out of what looked like a closet, to serve us. She was super sweet, and really explained what to get. I ended up with what was essentially grilled steak, and Mexican sides/flour tortilla (made in house). Everything was seasoned well, and really hit the spot. the steak was cooked well, the tortillas were amazing, and the salsas and sides were also fresh. The guacamole was also good and the chips were excellent. After reading the many pleasant reviews, my friend and I decided to give this place a try and it hurt my heart to waste money on food. The chicken tacos were completely inedible. The chicken was all clumped up together, the inner tortilla was flaking and soggy I guess because of the heat of the chicken (they weren't even that hot). The chorizo tacos were a bit better.
