This is a review of two things, I guess. My wife and I wanted to get out on a Saturday and decided to come here as part of our grocery shopping trip. I knew they served hot food as part of their in-house restaurant so going at lunch time seemed smart. Plus, I had only been to one other Mexican shop in the area and was disappointed with that so I wanted to see if this one was better. Unfortunately, it was about the same. The store is small, like real small. It had a lot of interesting things I had never seen before such as baked goods, candy, snack food, and canned/processed chilis, and we got several things to bring home. There was an employee watching tv and I didn't want to bug him with questions, though I wish he or someone else had said "hello" when we walked in (I do know "Hola"...) or asked if we wanted help. After picking out a half-dozen things, we wandered to the restaurant on the side and were overwhelmed with the menu. It was mostly in Spanish and while I could figure our some words there was a lot I didn't know. My wife's smart phone came in handy, but I tried to talk with the woman in the kitchen and it wasn't working. Here English is much better than my Spanish, but she had to call the cashier over to translate. The trouble is, I don't like onions at all. And, nearly everything they had to eat had onions. It is possible to ask for your food to be prepared a certain way but you need to speak the same language to do so, and you need to know exactly what comes in the food. I really want to come back with someone who knows Spanish and try lots of their items but without the onions. Anyway... I ordered a Chorizo burrito with rice and beans, cheese, and vegetables (multi-colored peppers and tomatoes). It was great, and the soft spicy sausage was front and center in the flavor profile. We bought some from the grocery home with us, so I plan to experiment more with it. My wife had a pork carnitas burrito that was good too. Their tamales were wonderful and since I hadn't head "authentic" ones before and really appreciated the strong, chewy corn dough and tender meat. I wish there was more sauce in the middle, but my wife was correct in commenting that the lack of sauce allowed the meat to star. For what it is worth, the older female cook didn't wear a mask, the older gentleman only did part of the time, and the store looked like it could use a good cleaning. There were several remains of dirty dishes lying around from previous patrons. Maybe this is what a Mexican mart is like. I wanted something a bit more, though I can't say what. This is our go-to place for Mexican takeout, and my review will be colored by the weird fact that despite having eaten from here a ton of times, I've never actually been inside. Going here has somehow turned into my husband's chore. English isn't his first language, and he says that the same goes for the employees, so to avoid miscommunication our strategy is just to copy down the Spanish names of what we want from the menu and give the list to the staff on arrival. So far they've gotten the order exactly right every time, so if you're Spanish-deficient like us this might be a good strategy for you, too. I've ordered from all over the menu, but my fallbacks are the delicious tamales and the super-comforting caldo de res (if you think there isn't actually any beef in your portion, dig to the bottom of the container where you'll find a couple of huge, tender pieces). Neither have ever let me down. My husband usually gets the camaron ala Mexicana, which always includes plenty of shrimp. Portions are ultra-generous, the prices are beyond reasonable, and the food hasn't let me down yet. My only complaint is that they don't sell their salsa verde in larger containers for me to dump all over my eggs in the morning. read more

LOL what the heck. This place is my Californian dream. In Los Angeles, they say that you find the best Mexican street food in the worst of places. Although the Capital Region has barely any Mexican street food places, I think this one takes the cake. I love that it's hidden behind a bus stop on the corner of Central and North Allen. I love that you need to walk through a narrow hallway to order and that you have to speak Spanish because no one in there speaks English. It reminds me of brighter days... literally, brighter... in a place with actual sunlight. The walls are orange: perfect. There are random boxes of avocadoes and other grocery store items scattered throughout the dining area: hilarious. The entire menu is in Spanish, so as long as you can point, you can order. The music, the broken TV, the fact that the cashier was scrolling through Instagram as she checked me out and talked on the landline phone and asked me if I wanted anything else, all in Spanish: great. Let's be real. This place gets 5 stars for memories of the SW USA. It gets 5 stars for being completely authentic. If there was a similar place in the area, I likely wouldn't award 5 stars but I felt completely transported into hopefully a version of Mexico that I was very pleased. The tortillas are not perfect. The presentation is definitely perfect and traditional with onions, cilantro, radishes, and hot sauce. You can get lengua tacos. Good luck finding those closer than 100 miles from here. Check it out if you want something very different from what you're used to, but go with an open mind. This isn't a 5-star place, but it's a 5-star experience and I'm very grateful for its presence in the area. read more

We came here to pick up some items and grab lunch. I saw a recipe for making tamales but was daunted by making the masa filling so decided we should just order some. I'm not sure about ordering online but most of the orders looked like they were through door dash. The menus on the wall in store aren't much help if you dont know spanish but their printed menus do translate what the meats are. They unfortunately don't list what comes in everything if you're a picky eater or have allergies. The food was a good value and tasted pretty authentic although I thought the meat in the carne asada tamale I ordered was a little skimpy. The masa and little sauce were great. I also ordered a pork carnitas burrito which comes with rice beans, and pico. The burrito was great and I could really taste the rice which I'm picky about. I wish the pork had been just a tad fattier. Ben ordered a chorizo burrito which was a bit of a challenge since we wanted no onions. I had asked if we could have it no onions with lettuce and tomato. Honestly even after calling their son back to translate for us I still don't think they made it correctly... They have coke products and mexican drinks to choose from. They also have orange fanta in glass bottles if thats your thing. The restruant side is long and narrow with mostly 2 person tables. It was a little dark and not super clean but if you're local and want a quick cheap lunch it will suffice. The grocery side is small, crowded and more like a little corner store for basics. They had bags of dried chillis, cheese, chorizo, bags of rice, canned chillis, some baked sweet breads with a sugar cookie dough topping. There were also a couple of boxes of tomatoes and peppers. It's been a while since I've visited Mexican Market, which is a shame, since it's one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. I'm not talking about Tex Mex here, I'm talking about the real deal. Wether in the mood for enchiladas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, or guisados, this is the place to be. I love walking through the store to the dining room, and then browsing the store while the food is being cooked. Pre-covid, we enjoyed eating at the counter. So far, we've tried the tacos, quesadillas, stew, and enchiladas, and everything has been amazing. Prices are excellent, especially considering portion sizes. They even deliver now through Uber Eats, but it's of course best to support local businesses directly, especially during these trying times. There's generally ample parking on Central Ave or Allan St to be able to run in and pick up the food. We look forward to working our way through the menu. read more

I want to like this store more than I do, because I'm excited by the notion of having a Mexican market in Albany. And I love that there is finally a place to go where one can get tacos. You know, tacos: soft corn tortillas, with a little bit of intensely flavored meat, a splash of hot sauce, and chopped onions & cilantro. When I needed corn tortillas, queso fresco, and dried chilis, I knew exactly where to come. And their selection of dried chilis is indeed impressive. But I wished there were better choices for tortillas and queso fresco. And while I appreciate that I can get authentic tacos, in all honesty, they aren't that great. For someone who loves the form, it's a good reminder of what tacos are. But if you don't have that context, you may not get what all the fuss is about. In all likelihood a lot of the deficiency could have to do with turnover. As in, they don't have a lot of it. So I'll keep going back, trying to support them as much as I can, and trying new things off the menu, in an attempt to find the one thing that's really good. Maybe next time I'll try a tamale. And hope that while they are preparing it, I don't hear the sound of a microwave door being slammed shut. read more

In addition to being a market for Mexican staples and fresh produce they have a menu of prepared food made fresh while you wait for take-out. I say "take-out" because I didn't see any place to sit down unless they were to let you into the back room and let you sit at the table where the food is prepared. Breakfast foods (9 am - 11 am): 3 different burritos with egg ($5.50 each) and a sincronisada quesadilla with ham and cheese ($5.25). Their daily specials (until 10:30 pm) include: burritos; tacos; tamales; quesadillas; empanadas; tostadas; wraps all for less than $8 each. I tried the Tamales Mole con Pollo ($2.50 each) and the Burritos de Lengua ($5.89). I was surprised that the tamale was wrapped in banana leafs instead of corn husks (fresh corn was available for sale) but the flavor was good, the mole had only a bit of spiciness and the chicken was from the breast. Two tamales might not satisfy a hungry person. The burrito, on the other hand, was large enough to satisfy a reasonable appetite. You have to try the lengua. What is lengua you ask? It's beef tongue and the way they prepare it you'll think you are eating a delicious pot roast. I had my tongue prepared with rice and pinto bean. Instead, you could choose black bean with pico de gallo and salsa verde or roja. There are also 11 torta daily specials under $8. If you buy corn tortillas at the big name grocery stores, you really need to check out this place. For $1.99 you can get a bag of about 40 tortillas made in Brooklyn or Queens. These are more flavorful and pliable than the cardboard-like ones at the supermarket. read more

Whatever you do end up eating, you should wash down with a Jarritos soda! I went in a blazing hot Saturday afternoon craving something-anything covered in some salsa verde and cheese. I was greeted by a man who I am going to assume is the owner. He was nice and made conversation. We talked about the weather and ancho chilies. I was unsure of what to get and he offered a number of suggestions. I ordered the homemade empanadas. The salsa verde was spicy and a bit chunky - I'm still thinking about it. The chicken was tender and delicious. I had to wait about 8-10 minutes for my order but it was well worth it. It's a small store. There are no fresh produce items but you will find a number of salsas, hot sauces, dried chilis, tortillas and queso fresco. I came to Albany with expectations that there was at least a decent Mexican restaurant around and on my first month here I had already tried two places, one was terrible, the other one was okay. Until I knew about this Mexican Market and I almost cried tears of joy when I saw they served food apart from selling Mexican products. So of course I had to try it, I had hopes that I could find authentic Mexican food and not Tex-Mex, which I strongly dislike. Anyway, Some reviews say there's no place to sit, they actually have two small sitting areas right now, nothing fancy, but there's a bit of nice decoration (The Mariachi sombreros of course, your restaurant isn't Mexican unless you have one of those on the walls!) and even music. I ordered the Chicken Sopes with Green Salsa to go. So apart from that, I paid for some typical candy and bread, which I'm kind of shocked they even had. Also note that the price for the food is more than reasonable, it's very affordable. Once I got home I opened the box to see and holy crap, THEY ARE REAL SOPES! And they looked and were delicious. The chicken was grilled and not over or undercooked, big chunks of it and the sour cream and cheese melted on top of the sope were awesome, and the salsa verde? Wow. First time ever in New York I get actually spicy salsa! I'm not complaining, but if you're not into spicy stuff, take it easy on the salsa. So I finished them and I still couldn't believe it, they actually resembled in appearance and taste the sopes my mom made me back in Mexico (Yes, I'm Mexican-American) So when it comes to Mexican food, I judge a bit harshly because I know what it's supposed to be like. I love Mexican Market! I'm moving out of Albany soon and will seriously miss this place. It is hidden behind the North Allen and Central Ave bus stop. It is a small Mexican grocery and kitchen. You have to walk to the back to place your order. My attempts at Spanish often fail and I tend to fall back on just pointing to the items I want on the take out menu. The lengua (yes, tongue) is my favorite. It is stewed and tender and extremely flavorful. I usually go with the tacos (with onion and cilantro) or the tostada (with queso fresco). Also, their salsas are delicious - the salsa verde is amazing. Super reasonably priced, and the husband and wife who run the place are very sweet. There are a few tables in the back (near the kitchen/where you order), but I've generally done take-out because we live right nearby. We discovered this place a little while ago. The location is behind a Mexican grocery, but let me tell you: food is AMAZING. I have been coming back here for burritos, tacos, anything you name it. It is seriously an undiscovered gem in Albany. To be honest, as someone that isn't too familiar with "Mexican cuisine", chipotle, moes, Taco Bell etc are not NOT Mexican food. Love having this place right around the corner. Their lengua tacos are absolutely fantastic, lengua is easily messed up and they nail it. I'm addicted to them and order the same thing every time, but other people I've gone with have been pleased with the various things you ordered. There are only a couple of seats, so you might have to get it to go but it's worth it to have it hand cooked right in front of you. The staff is very friendly as well. I'd recommend grabbing a Jarritos Tamarind or any of the other real sugar sodas. Location: It's easy to miss this place driving by as there is no signage on street level that you could see from the street. On the second floor below the roof there is a sign that says "Mexican Market"....but for simplicity, just look for the bus stop as the market is directly behind it. Market: To call this place a market would be a overstating it a bit. In the front they offer wire transfers and they have a cooler but its more like a small convenience store. The restaurant is in the back. Food: I ordered a chicken burrito for $6 and change which is a pretty decent value, not great but fair. In terms of flavor, it was OK...maybe a 5 out of 10. Chipotle and Moe's are much better...and I used to live in the city so I am very familiar with real Mexican food in set-ups catering to Mexican non english speaking clientele. I think local foodies get excited at the opportunity to show their friends this off the beaten path place staffed by Mexican nationals but truthfully, the food is average at best. Staff: So I was at the counter for about 5 minutes before the two women acknowledged me which is a pet peeve of mine as you can always look up and smile and tell someone you'll be with them in a minute if you're cooking. It turned out they didnt speak any English and that's not an issue for me yet its no excuse for being cold and rude. On the day I visited, there was a young male manager who spoke English and took payment and he seemed friendly and engaging. Bottom Line: As an American, if I opened up a restaurant overseas, people shouldn't expect that I am going to offer a "real" American cheeseburger that for no other reasons than my nationality makes it better than other options. This is a Mexican restaurant staffed by Mexican nationals but that does not mean you should expect it to be better as it isn't...quite frankly, its not as good as probably 80% of what's available elsewhere. Hands down, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Albany. I discovered this place by accident as I was walking down Central Avenue, and I was so glad I did!! They are very reasonably priced and provide generous portions. I usually always order the torta when I go and they are huge! I've also had their mole enchiladas which were very tasty and bursting with flavor. I've had mole many times in my life, and this was some of the best I've ever had. The service is always fantastic and my food always arrives sooner than I expected. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants awesome authentic Mexican food!! read more
