The unassuming restaurant entrance would have you thinking it isn't open but, I highly recommend venturing in and trying their authentic menu. The menu is small but very every thing I've tried has been absolutely delicious. The servers are such a delight and happy to answer any questions you may have. I go here for meals to-go on occasion. It's a combination of a small grocery store and restaurant in one. The items I've ordered, usually tostadas, have always successfully "scratched the itch" of eating Mexican food. I'm sure the tostadas, tacos, and even the Mexican crema are all prepackaged but there's still something so satisfying about the combination of crunchy corn chip with protein on top. The tang of lime juice, crema fat, julienned lettuce, pico de Gallo, and fresh avocado slices with your choice of either red or green salsa added to the dish is a winner. Wandering the aisles, looking at different items for sale (dried chiles and spices, fresh pineapples and mangos, a whole slew of different hot sauces, various soaps and shampoos, even molcajetes, piloncillo, aji amarillo, lime mayonnaise, Mexican chocolate, queso Oaxaca, or cotija cheese) is always enjoyable. For something unique, try the tlayuda - "Mexican pizza with refried beans, two Mexican cheeses, avocado slices, Al pastor steak, and chorizo." The guacamole lacked any spice of flavor at all. Then the entrees came out and the flautas were good, but my tacos were cold and subpar. This restaurant is also one of the great Mexican grocery stores in the Capital District and happens to also carry a number of Peruvian goods that are hard to find. If you haven't tried it, I recommend trying the Peruvian sauces like huancaina and uchucuta. Having been raised in Austin, Texas, it is exasperating to find the kinds of salsas I like up here. Although not close to home, I come out of my way to pick up their packaged salsa (unlabeled, in one of the back fridges) as it is about the only salsa around here that comes close to the flavors I'm used to. It's inconsistent, but it's a great blender salsa for when I don't want to make my own. The restaurant is very cozy and the service has always been super friendly and attentive. I came in 40minutes shy of closing and staff was more than accommodating. After I ordered, the waitress unceremoniously dumped a good heap of tortilla chips, enough for 3 people, as well as a cauldron full of salsa. It was a cozy and welcoming affair. Get the shrimp tostada, because holy cow that was a lot of shrimp and avocado. I genuinely don't understand how they price it so low without losing money. I could eat the tacos here every day and be the happiest girl alive! They're authentic and flavorful- everything I was looking for when I first went. I've since been back and tried their burrito and tostadas. The burrito was humongous and jam packed with all the goodness you'd expect in a burrito. The tostada was perfectly crispy, and had a generous amount of toppings. That first satisfying crunch does not disappoint!! The Horchata here doesn't do it for me (I'd rather listen to the gossiping of male and female escorts), but then I'm incredibly picky about Horchata, and am in love with the likes of Suadero (NYC) and Taco Nazo (Columbus). However the homemade, street-style authentic Mexican tacos are delicious and delightful. Definitely the best I've had in the Albany area, and some of the best in NY state, including NYC, believe it or not. I can't even name 10 tacos places in NY state I like better than La Mexicana, and I've tried them all, so it's a glowing 5-star review from me. The meat is juicy, everything is made the way it's supposed to me (with cilantro y cebollas), they're cheap, generous, filling, and service is nice. Might take awhile for the tacos, but you can browse the awesome grocery store while you're waiting and check out all of the Mexican delicacies. What I can say is: this guy Mex a good taco. read more

Thank God for La Mexicana. Let's be clear about one thing right off the bat. Not all of the food here is five star food. This is Schenectady, not San Francisco. But the fact that we can get tasty authentic $2 street tacos this far north, is nothing short of remarkable. Not all of their fillings are great. The grilled chicken and steak fall short. My favorite thing on the menu is that carnitas torta (which really needs to be ordered with extra jalapenos to help cut through all that delicious fat). But I'm perfectly happy making a light lunch out of three tacos. I'm partial to the lengua and chorizo in my soft corn tacos. It's topped with the traditional chopped onion and cilantro. There is no lettuce or tomatoes to be found on these babies. And that's just the way it should be. Steer clear of the savory tamales. The sweeter tamale elote is a bit better. Their massive tlayuda is fun to get once, if you have someone to share it with, but their are better things to get on your first time out. If you've never had horchata, the sweet rice and cinnamon drink, you should try it. The flavors go great with the food. And I also like their tres leches on those rare occasions when I can imagine eating dessert. A family of 10 could feast here for the price of a dinner for two at Mexican Radio. La Mex now even has a bar shoved into its minuscule dining room. Go there. Eat real Mexican food. Be happy. But if you're coming from the west coast, you probably should skip it. La Mex is great for here, but it would be closer to a 3* joint in the Mission (on the strength of that torta). read more

I use to frequent La Mexicana quit often when I lived in Niskayuna for grocery items as well as for dining. However, I moved to the Finger Lakes a almost 1.5 years ago & it's been a while since I had tacos at La Mexicana. So, I was in town over the past weekend to catch a show at Proctors and to visit some friends - I was craving some tacos so naturally I went to La Mexicana for lunch. The food and service is still good - but. Something changed. I can't put my finger on it but something was off. The overall flavor was lacking from my prior experiences. Now, still very good and still vastly superior to Taco-Hell...but off. I believe my prior review was a 4 star and I hate to lower it but, although not a 3, it's fallen a little. Not writing it off and the next time I'm back in town and craving authentic Mexican food I will head to La Mexicana. Hopefully, my off experience was a one time thing. I don't quite know why it took me so long to return here. I'd been talking about doing so for at least two months. I think I'm still going to stay with four stars for now. This is not haute cuisine - this is home cookin'. The restaurant side of the business is not large. Maybe 10 tables. Bright lime green walls, and I do mean lime since I compared them to the limes that were on our plate. My wife ordered the Pozole ($). It was not exactly what she was expecting since our first introduction to pozole was at a Mexican friend's house. She thought it could have benefited from some more hominy. Our friend had used chicken broth with the pork, but they may have used the traditional pork broth or water here. It still was good though. We shared a couple of tamale ($2.50 ea) - both were chicken, one with red sauce and the other with green sauce. We liked the green sauce better, but there was absolutely no complaining about the one with red sauce. There's nothing as good as homemade tamales and they know how to make them here. I felt the need to try their Lenguna Taco ($2) - that's beef tongue for the uninitiated. It came with two soft tortillas so I split the ingredients into the two small corn tortillas. The lenguna was cubed and not as strong in flavor as I've had elsewhere. Some people may prefer it this way. I think I enjoyed a previous introduction to lenjuna tacos more so. What I had really been waiting to try was a Tlayuda ($9.99). The price has risen one dollar since I first commented, but it is still an excellent value. The Tlayuda here starts with a large flour tortilla (12 inch diameter?) that is made crispy and then coated with a thin layer of refried beans, then topped with shredded cabbage (?), string cheese, slices of spicy chicken breast, slices of spicy beef (almost like homemade beef jerky), crumbled chorizo, sliced avocado, and slices of Mexican cheese (panela?) that they probably sell in their grocery store. The Mexican chorizo on the Tlayuda is absolutely fantastic. I'll be returning to look for other dishes that have their chorizo. In fact, I would guess that it also may be for sale in the grocery store. I must warn you, however, I did not figure out the best way to eat the Tlayuda. They don't cut it like a pizza, and while the tortilla on the bottom is crispy it seems like you should be able to simply break it into edible chunks to eat. But for some reason this was not working. With all the toppings it was difficult to break off pieces that could hold a variety of the toppings. I'm ready to take this task on a second time, however. It's a wonderful combination of flavors. There is no alcohol license here so we had a couple cans of soda. There is a large TV carrying Mexican programming. Just before we left a number of tables filled up with Latinos. I don't know if they came just to enjoy this wonderful cooking or if they came to watch the soccer game that was starting on the TV - maybe both. I seem to also recall a juke box that at times competed with the TV. read more

Visited this place while out of town. The tacos werent too great. Tried the steak, pork, tongue and the chicken. Flavors missing and quite bland. However these folks have thier Chirizo game on point. Finally stopped in after getting lots of recommendations from a cross-section of people I know. What I Loved: Quick service, cheap but authentically simple/delicious tacos, and fun store to peruse. Flavors are great, lots of freshness and love in the cooking and portion sizes are pretty big. Huge value! The experience reminded me of the times I spent in Brazil on exchange. This is not a Mexican restaurant that caters to gringos, although everyone is absolutely welcome. What I mean is that they stand behind their authenticity, no fanfare, no sombreros and overdone decor. The menu is not 17 pages long. Simplicity. This I appreciate. Looks tiny from the street, but there is ample parking in the rear off a side street and enough seating for this type of restaurant. My only qualm: Honestly- was not a fan AT ALL of how both bathrooms open right onto the dining area. Theres are just some things I don't want to see/smell/think about while dining. :) I've only been just this one time, but when I return I'll just definitely sit at the bar, grab a margarita and that way I can keep my back to the bathrooms! The most authentic Mexican food I've found in the Albany area. The staff is welcoming and very efficient. They offer real Mexican taqueria food- a variety of delicious tacos and traditional Mexican soup. The tacos arrive as they do in Mexico with chopped onions, cilantro and lime, just as God intended . Each meat filling is unique to its recipe and homemade green and red salsa are served alongside. The price is nuts- $2 each. The other thing they make that I absolutely crave is posole. Rich pieces of pork and hominy simmered in pork broth, chiles and spices. You add a bunch of veggies at the table and it's utter heaven. One of the best things about this restaurant is that it's attached to a small grocery where you can buy authentic Mexican ingredients. I think I like this place? La Mexicana Grocery has two sections. A grocery and an adjoining restaurant. The parking lot is very small. Be very careful as you pull in and back out! The grocery has items you will not find in a typical grocery store. If you are searching for that rare Mexican ingredient you will probably find it here. They recently saved me by having an entire crate of tomatillos. These are not typically available during the winter months. I am by no means a taco expert. The one thing I know for sure is that the tacos here are 100 percent authentic. They are the real deal and not the americanized taco. They are small, served on tiny corn tortillas and with traditional accompaniments of onions, cilantro, limes and hot sauce. I have had the chicken, beef tongue and chorizo tacos. In all three cases the meat fillings did not make me say wow. They are either over cooked or bland. The chorizo tacos were the best of the three. The tortillas are also lacking. They didn't really work for me. I have also ordered the cheese enchiladas which came with refried beans and rice. The enchiladas were not hot enough and again I was not loving the corn tortillas. The sauce was tasty but I am almost certain it was not homemade. The rice and beans are AMAZING. If that is offered with your entree you will be very happy. They do have other things on the menu and I absolutely need to return to try items recommended by my fellow Yelpers. There may be a 5 star dish I am yet to discover. read more

I'm from the West Coast and was sorely missing authentic Mexican groceries and food. Happily, I discovered this place! Both my husband and I marinated in the quaint cafe, its bright decor and hand-painted walls. I have an unofficial standard for authenticity of lime wedges and small tortillas for tacos and will order chicken tacos as my first meal at a Mexican restaurant to test things out. This serves as a base line for all restaurants, as well as, a no-fail option, because it is hard to mess up tacos! When I saw that my chicken tacos arrived with both a lime wedge and were served on small corn tortillas--two doubled up for each taco--I breathed a sigh of relief. Real food, at last. My husband's burrito was a tasty mix of crispy meat, creamy avocado and flavorful beans. We both enjoyed our meals immensely and talked about it for the next couple of days. The grocery side of the restaurant has a small but genuine selection of known brands of Mexican goods. There are open bins of 5 or 6 kinds of dried chiles--you have to know the kinds by sight since they aren't labeled! I was able to find my favorite corn tortillas so I stocked up. As others have noted, the dearth of authentic Mexican food in the Capital Region makes this place a real gem, although having little competition by which to make their entire menu 5-star. I think going inside where it's warm is my latest favorite outdoor activity. FF was happy. Red tucked into a Chorizo Tortas ($5.99) - a big sandwich of dark brown, crusty Portuguese bread stuffed with spicy sausage, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and crema. She plowed through it before I ordered Beer #2. Red was also very happy. Eat this also. I went for the Carnitas Burrito: slow cooked pork, gently spiced, tender and juicy, crispy around the edges, stuffed with rice and beans and spices and chilies, and wrapped up in a burrito that was like a thick, warm blanket on a windy afternoon. I made it a bit more stormy with a squeeze or two of salsa down the middle ($6.99; it was two meals for this little superhero). Don't let the name food you. On a search for some 'real' mexican food, Yelp led me to La Mexicana Grocery. First thoughts of this were that we would be eating at a divey, some kind of converted back closet of a Grocery store (totally fine with for me- being that the best mexican food in Queens are off the street carts or from the tiny kitchens of hidden bodegas). I was surprised to find that La Mexicana is larger than what I thought, a separate Grocery Store (with fresh Mexican pastries, veggies, sodas, chorizo, in addition to home goods, spices, dry and canned goods) and a Restaurant side. It was very clean, had a full bar,10-12 tables, colorful walls, and intricately painted jaguar and iguana decorations. I was even more surprised that on a Saturday night, the place had more gringos.. than latin customers. I was worried... LOL (Actually, there was a nice mix of middle-aged couples on a dinner date, young professionals, college students, and families(Central & South American, Indian, White)) I happily ate my way through a delicious meal. For 2 people, the meal cost about $33 (including a steak burrito to go). We shared 1 hibiscus tea, 2 tacos (lengua and chorizo), 1 chicken tamale, 1 steak platter (comes with refried beans, yellow rice, salad, guac, & side of tortilla). By 6:30 pm on a Saturday, they said that they had run out of horchata and the dominica steak platter due to the busy lunch hour.The hibiscus tea was Awesome- a cross between cranberry and grape with more depth, a little sweet. The tacos were tasty as well- the tortillas fluffy and SO fresh, the lengua (beef tongue) was the better one- trust me- like the softest beef you will ever have. The chorizo was okay, a little like finely ground taco meat. The tamale was soft and filled with dark meat chicken, it was fairly mild but comforting in texture. The steak platter was good, but the steak a little tough although flavorful, next time I'd like to try the Dominica Steak Platter. The mexican rice was delicious and so were the beans and guac. For some reason our waitress forgot to put in our order of Shrimp on Tostada, I'd like to try that next time in addition to their "pizza." Which apparently is huge. Saw one table order large cups of what looked like Shrimp Ceviche in tomato sauce? Not sure if it's on the menu, will have to investigate.. Our waitress seemed to be related to the Host/Owner? All the girls looked like they were working hard all day. Service was very friendly, the platters came out a bit slower than the rest of the food. Thank you La Mexicana! PS. I stopped here for lunch. We entered through the grocery store, which is connected to the restaurant. I had a quick chance to check out some stuff they had in stock. A great small shop for some somewhat hard-to-find Mexican items. As for the food... Finally a Mexican place that has $2 tacos -- can I transport you to Rochester, please? Simple, quality tacos. I ordered chorizo, al pastor and lengua. Chorizo was my favorite -- great flavor, just enough heat. Al pastor is always a classic choice -- simple and delicious topped with cilantro and onions. The lengua was little chewy for my liking. I also tried a few bites of the torta, which I'd order again! Tender meat packed between the warm lightly toasted bread that as you squish it to take a bite soaks up all the extra juice. Overall, go! Do not go here expecting terrific ambiance BUT go here to eat some of the most authentic (and delicious) mexican food in the region. I like the carnita taco and al pastor tacos and you can't beat the price for the quality of food. The little grocery store is great too for the hard to find items to make your own dishes at home! My recommendation is to get over the location and try the food. This isn't commercial mexican food - it is as close to the real thing you are going to get in the Capital Region! read more

Stopped in for some lunch tacos and bought a bunch of candy and stuff that reminds me of my youth (I grew up in Mexico). I can say that the food was the best I've had. This was my second visit for food. I got the al pastor tacos and the lengua (beef tongue) tacos. They were both on point but the al pastor tacos shine above the rest. The green salsa that's provided with them is also terrific. I always spend way too much money when I got there because I end up with bags full of candy and junk food from the little store that's attached to the restaurant. There is typically one lady that does both food service AND cashier at the grocery front end so you often have to be a bit patient when paying for things and their credit machine isn't fast by any means. But it's always good service and very polite manners. Go there and order the al pastor tacos. Thank me later! read more
