Update of previous review: Dr. Lane performed the splenectomy on my beloved dog on Monday. When I arrived to pick her up Monday night (after hours to give her more time to recover from the anesthesia) Dr. Lane told me about the procedure and asked if I would like to see a picture of the removed spleen w/ tumor (I did). I was given thorough instructions for her care and numbers for several emergency hospitals as well as Dr. Lane's cell phone number in case my girl experienced distress during the night! The following day, Dr. Lane called to check on her progress (which was excellent) and asked that I bring her in for a physical exam on Friday. I brought her in and Dr. Lane checked her incision, which is healing beautifully, with no swelling, bruising or redness. I let Dr. Lane know that my pup is energetic and is showing no sign of discomfort. She gave me further instruction as to when she can resume limited walks and when she can return to normal activity. I could not be happier with this experience. Not only are these folks highly skilled, professional and compassionate, but their office charges are fully a third less than I was paying at her previous vet and the overall total for her surgery and care was significantly less than I would have paid at the other facility. I absolutely do not recommend this place for cats. My cat is a friendly cat but was nervous about the appointment. The people at this clinic had no idea how to sooth him or handle him to make him comfortable. The vet assitant had very long fake nails that set our cat even more ill at ease and didn't allow her to complete ordinary tasks. The vet and assistant were not able to complete all of the check up tasks, they gave me bad advice and I walked out of there with a $600 vet bill for some worm pills and some ear drops for a condition I already diagnosed but no real help for the other condition which was a more concerning problem. I'm still at square one with not much to show. Ouch. read more

Dr. Lane and her staff have provided exceptional care to my two senior pups. We have been to many vets, but drive extra as we found a real gem to care for our fur friends. Staff have been very empathic, kind, and caring. Dr. Lane is extremely knowledgeable and had identified a misdiagnosis from our previous vet. Our 16 year old heeler mix recently passed due to kidney disease. Dr. Lane was able to identify what was going on and provide recommendations to make the remainder of his life as comfortable as possible. When it came time to make the challenging decision to help him pass on, Dr. Lane and her staff were very kind and gave us the ability to be with him as long as we needed. First, I love Dr Graff. He is very empathetic. My 15.5 yr old 9 lb havenese needs her nails clipped. I made an appointment for her. Upon getting there, we were confronted by the staff, who insisted we get her a $79.00 rabies vaccine, before they will trim her nails. Poppy never leaves the house, sleeps most of the day, my husband and I quite honestly can't afford a rabies shot for her....nor do we think she needs it. It was just a way to extort more money from us (which they've done before.). They never mentioned this when I made the appointment. We are having a tough time financially right now, as we are seniors on a fixed income. Shame on them. read more

I'm so grateful to this vet office for seeing my dog on short notice! My dog is usually very anxious, but the entire team was incredibly kind, gentle, and patient with him. The office manager and assistant were warm and welcoming, and the doctor was very informative--answering all of my questions thoroughly. This has been my vet for the lifetime of my dogs. Their standard procedure has been to upsell tests etc with a side of guilt ie "you need to do all the things if you care about your animals." I called them this week with a sick dog in need of care. They wouldn't squeeze in an appointment to help my dog. They referred me to emergency vet, all of whom in the county were also too busy to see my dog that day. My dog died at home that night. I can understand an emergency vet not prioritizing my pet, but would have hoped my lifetime vet, who has made thousands of dollars off of me insisting on the importance of caring well for animals, would care. Apparently not. I feel they care about making money, not the best interest of our pets. read more

My dog has a bit of a long history but they were patient and understanding, which can be rare in businesses these days! The veterinary assistant is the only reason I came back with my dog to this vet as well as my regular vet was not available for weeks. This vet is extremely expensive even with the minuscule Veterans discount they gave me. Their communication is unclear and they seem to have no concern to update me even after they found heart worm in my dog. They seemed to think it was okay to wait 3 weeks until his booster shot to do further testing for something I see as a serious condition. They forgot to get a urine sample from my dog for lime disease the second time I went when I had specifically asked for them to do it on the phone. Not pleased with this vet. The only other good thing was that the vet assistant is the nicest person you could meet. Main doctor and main assistant don't seem too passionate about their jobs. read more

I can't say enough good things about the staff at Occidental Vet. My dog was experiencing vomiting and bloody diarrhea. They got Pepper in the same day and he was evaluated and treated by Dr. Graff initially, who drew blood, prescribed antibiotics and something for vomiting. The next day, I received a call from Dr. Lane, who gave me Pepper's diagnosis and recommended that we come in to get Pepper subcutaneous fluids, as he was pretty dehydrated. Mind you, Pepper is pretty vet-averse, so we had to muzzle and sedate him so that they were able to administer the fluids a little more calmly (yikes!). Pepper is now back to his high-energy self. A thousand thanks to the staff at Occidental Vet, who were very professional, caring and on top of it. read more

I have been taking my critters here since 2009: 4 cats, 2 dogs. Dr. Lane, Sylvia and the staff are family. Besides the veterinary care, which is extraordinary, they are so much more. They are steady, They are compassionate. They are therapists all rolled into one complete clinic. I've had few in my life, who have been there for me and my beloved critters than them. The only possible exception being family. That's why I adamantly view them as such....family. read more

I received Dr. Graff's info from a colleague, who while visiting my office in Santa Rosa realized I might need a veterinarian for a private euthanasia at home. About two months later on a Sunday morning I was confronted with what all pet lovers fear most. My dog of 15 years was finally ready to go. I probably waited too long but every day was precious to me and he wasn't suffering. Now, he was immobile. I called Dr. Graff at 10 am. He cleared his schedule and by 1 pm he was at the house. I've been through this before but it's not something you can ever get use to. Dr. Graff was calming and professional. A+ Care - Dr. Lane cares about her patients! We started going to OVH a over 5 years ago. Dr. Lane takes time with each patient and gives the best care possible. OVH is not cheap, they are a bit pricey but you get A+ care. She offers suggestions and care based on your needs. Even though we live closer to multiple vet clinics and hospitals, we travel the extra distance to see Dr. Lane and her staff who are caring and loving. Our three dogs actually like going to the vets! Wouldn't let me make appt for my service animal without charging my debit card three days before appt. I am on fixed income and needed to wait til my retirement check is deposited in my account. I have no outstanding charges with this clinic. I am perplexed at their appt. Policy. And they are very expensive compared to other clinics. They charged me 300 dollars for a visit for my dog getting stung by a yellowjacket. I was there 5 minutes and came away with 12 Benadryl. They insisted on tons of labwork. This was a few years back. I met Dr Walters and staff while working next door for a local grooming shop. I am a pet groomer, business owner, and former veterinary assistant so I have worked with and alongside many Veterinary practices. I immediately noticed and admired how professional, friendly and passionate everyone was. I was asked many questions by several members of the staff; they wanted to understand my practices and make sure I was going to give good care to their clients and provide a good service if they were to refer me. This ultimately led to me doing the same with them! I found them to be informed, sharing, patient, caring, meticulous and communicative. The vet came out saying she could not get near my dog, he needed to be sedated because he was too aggressive(yellow Lab). She says she will give us pills and to take him again once he is drugged. I was charged for the visit plus the pills...fine! when I got home I called to set up the next appointment. The vet tech tells me that next visit I won't be charged the consultation fee. Bull! they want to charge me yet again and claim that they earned the 78 dollars when the damn vet clearly said she could not get near him. Thieves and let not get started on the lack of customer service skills, the vet can't even hold eye contact. This vet tech calls back, rude!!! telling me that it is the vet's office and she will charge if she wants, although this very same morning I was told otherwise. Dr. Graff came to euthanize my dear and beloved animal companion, a beautiful and handsome cat of almost 19 years. I had expressly asked for a quiet, peaceful and respectful time (at least 30 minutes or so, w/the vet present) to send him across the rainbow bridge, in the late afternoon or evening. Instead, he came in the early morning, rushed in, after i gave him a KN95 mask, (which he did not have), and after I respectfully showed him the place where I could bring my baby, next to his carrier, where i had put a soft blanket, and one of my wool shirts that has my smell, he forcefully said "I'm going to where he is" (on the floor of the kitchenette, where M. was still calmly and peacefully eating!) Graff had arrived far earlier than I had requested, and he proceeded to ambush M. assault-style, with two sharp needles loaded to sedate and kill my baby, one after the other. He had originally told me that he would give M. a pill to sedate him first. Also, I had in advance, told Graff that I had Bach flower remedy ready to give him, but of course, no time for that either! It was all done in less than 5 minutes, and all I could do was, try to pet my totally shocked companion, who understandably bared his teeth, he was clearly alarmed and died in distress, with a horrible expression, rigor mortis, on his face. He was gone in an extremely rushed time frame, before he and I could know what was happening. There was no excuse for this cruel and inhumane treatment. Graff rushed out the door, as if he had a plane to catch, and said "You could call me later, if you want", but who would want to talk with a person like that? i have filed a complaint with the CA Veterinary Board, and I hope that he is disciplined accordingly. It was the worst experience I've ever had with a so-called veterinarian, and I'm having to have counseling and therapy to recover from this horrendous experience. read more

Dr. Graff is one of the kindest, most professional, and empathetic veterinarians we've ever met. Two years ago, our beloved 11-1/2 year old Smooth Collie "Daisy" became gravely ill. She had been under the care of another veterinarian for the last month without improvement. The blood work results we received on that Tuesday morning from her own veterinarian were grim. After a discussion with her breeder, we agreed we couldn't let her suffer any longer. We called multiple house-call veterinarians until we found Dr. Graff. He came to our home that evening. Although we had been through this before, Dr. Graff explained the entire procedure in detail. He gave us however long we needed before proceeding. He double checked for any life-signs afterwards. He brought a blanket and personally carried her to his car. He gave us more time with her before driving away. In a couple weeks he returned and brought her engraved box back to us. I highly recommend Dr. Graff as a veterinarian who employs dignity, respect, and professionalism. He is one of the best. read more

I'm asking questions and she's busy listening to other co-workers talk to her. I had to repeat my questions a couple of times and she wasn't super helpful. It was a super awkward conversation. What kind people. My cat actually Liked going to this vet. They have an area in the waiting room just for felines and they use kitty pheromones in the exam room, which he loved. He purred every time I brought him. He was so well cared for by Dr. Lane and the staff, and when the ravages of ill health and advanced age required him to be euthanized, they went about it carefully and kindly. Anne and Lisa made a horrible day a little easier for my cat and for me. I can't recommend these folks enough. read more

My vet for two years. When my dog got sick and i needed emergency attention(i live two minutes from the place) they would not accept us. My dog ended up dying at a different facility the following day. I am still receiving emails from them to bring my dog in even though i told them she died. They take such good care of my cats. I've had two special-needs cats, and Occidental Vet was with me every step of the way. Dr. Lane went out of her way to learn as much about diabetes in cats as she could. She helped me keep my Boo cat healthy and happy for years even though his blood sugar would never level out. They saved the life of my cat Moonshadow when she was hit by a car at age 2; the accident left her blind with a paralyzed front leg and ongoing health problems but with excellent care she lived to be 16.
