I'm so happy I found this vet! After going to the bigger vets in town for our previous pets, I really wanted to find a smaller "hometown vet." And Dr. Pangburn and her team are awesome! She took the time with me and my new kittens and answer any questions I had and provide treatment for their upper respiratory infection. And then she called and texted a week later to check in on them to see if they were improving after being on antibiotics. I was so impressed! Just had our dogs nails trimmed. $50 for a small dog. That is more than double than a normal nail trim. Normally a nail trim ranges from $15 to $20. Not $50. That is 100% gouging the customer. Because of this I will be finding a new vet. They are great in other areas but this was unacceptable. No one in SR charges that. read more

Dr Thorne, the long time doctor at Alderbrook, is retired now for a few years. A few years ago my family got the service of Dr Farquhar of whom we quickly grew to like and appreciate. He assisted in putting down our beloved elderly pet and also helping us with initial care of our newest member, all in the last two years. He has shown care and compassion through all of our visits, even during strange times of the pandemic. We are now sorry to hear that Dr Farquhar has moved and they have yet another new doctor who seems to be learning the ropes and getting familiar with patients. Unfortunately I have had a terrible experience with one member of the office staff and the vet that has recently started working there. My poor 8 month old kitten was suffering from a UTI that was completely overlooked despite my concerns about bloody urine. What my kitten (male) did need was a urinalysis, not a baseless (and failed because he was "squirming") anal exam. Despite my concerns of a UTI, we were sent home with nothing. Keeping in mind that urinary problems are a HUGE deal for male cats since their urethras are very thin, and quite common. Two weeks later my kitten was not better, so I called telling them that I thought it was a UTI. They told me to take him to the ER, which then I called 4 different ones to get their opinion over the phone. All of which agreed that it was not necessary to take him in, as they would most likely just give him antibiotics, one of them recommended to call our vet back to try to get antibiotics from them. So I did, but I was told by the front desk that they would write my message down and give it to the vet and "get back to me". After waiting all day I called back but they were closed. They next day I called again for them to tell me the same thing! (Seems like they hadn't written the note down). So I called back midday and finally got some. After 6 days on antibiotics, he did not seem to get better. Since it was too late to treat the UTI, my poor kitty had developed bladder stones (btw I warned the front desk that I was worried of this which is why my cat needed antibiotics). Oh and I found this out after taking him to the ER because the vet at Alderbrook refused to treat or see him. After calling Alderbrook back to explain that this is not ok, that the vet agreed to treat him by taking him on as a patient, I was belittled and could not get a word in by Alex, the front desk lady. I was rudely told that I needed to find another vet because they will not see me or my kittens anymore. Maybe the two older vets who have been working there for longer are good. But the younger newer one has been negligent. It is impossible to have a good experience there especially when Alex is extremely rude and pompous. I would recommend everyone be cautious before taking your fur baby here. read more

I feel terrible for anyone who works at this office that actually cares about animals. We found this hospital when I needed to get my dog spayed prior to a road trip to the east coast. During COVID, there were protocols in place so I couldn't accompany my dog to any appointments. When I was finally able to go in with her, I immediately did not like the vet we were scheduled with (I believe her last name started with an R. Older lady). She had a very cold bedside manner and it was clear my dog was uncomfortable. She would not cooperate at all so this vet prescribed me trazadone and advised me to give her 2 the night before her next appointment and 2 the morning of. Now I know this is precautionary for all parties involved, but her overall presence didn't even sit well with me. So as soon as we left, I went searching for a new vet. We made a meet and greet appointment with the new office and let me tell you... the difference was night and day! My dog had zero issues with our current office. She cooperated and even gave kisses. This visit was WITHOUT medication. To solidify even more that I'd made the right choice, her annual checkup was yesterday. She had zero issues being walked back into the exam room by a tech and when the vet came out, he had nothing but wonderful things to say about my dog. He said her demeanor was the sweetest and she was a gem. If you choose to go to Alderbrook, make sure you read your animal's demeanor with the vet. I know this woman is not the only vet there and I'm sure the others are wonderful. But I refuse to make my dog uncomfortable to find out. read more

I'd like to preface that before this year-- I had a great experience with Alderbrook-- though I did find them a bit more on the expensive end than other vets, I felt they were kind, caring and worth it. What went wrong: 1. Mistake during surgery: During my pet's lipoma removal surgery, they missed a lipoma. And removed only 2 of the 3 lipomas, even though they were in the same area. I'm not sure how this happened as they were the ones who let me know there were three... and also biopsied them so shouldn't they have known there were three? 2. Mistake during recovery: When I brought my dog back to have his nylon sutures removed. They left some IN HIM still. It's like they just hastily cut what was on the outside, and didn't bother pulling checking carefully to pull the rest out. Luckily my husband is a doctor and he pulled them out with medical tweezers himself. Nylon sutures are not absorbable- they will irritate your pet's skin until eventually, their body pushes it out. There were a few things I was confused about.. 1. Why didn't they use absorbable sutures? (they are slightly more costly-- but shouldn't be an issue for the amount we paid) These were used for Mochi on his previous surgeries 2. How could something like this be missed? I was hesitant to write this review... as in general, I know businesses are struggling due to covid. However, it seems that Pet Hospitals have been overflowing with business-- and that might be part of the problem. Both these mistakes seem like mistakes that might have happened due to rushing. The story: In June 2020, I brought my pup mochi in for his usual check-- we were recommended a dental cleaning since he also had a few harmless lipomas in his chest, it was recommended for us to get it all done in one go while he was under anesthesia. We were quoted a little under $1700 and decided to move forward. We knew this cost was high in comparison to previous teeth cleanings and surgeries we had for him at other Veterinary hospitals... but we thought it would be worth it as Alderbrook has always been great with our pup. After surgery-- things seemed fine, and my pup recovered well. Everything was great until I found out.. they didn't actually remove all of the mass, and when getting the sutures removed-- they completely missed two nylon threads sticking out from his skin. When we pulled them out they were about 1 cm long! Did we tell them? Response? Yes-- For the mass/lipoma. I contacted them via phone call about the lipoma, and the doctor explained with my dog lying down, he didn't feel the 3rd lipoma and missed it. It still doesn't quite make sense to me. I would not have wanted to cut my pup open if it wasn't to remove all of them. Why leave one in? For the sutures, I emailed them immediately, but haven't gotten a response to this day. I know they received the email because I got their auto response. I'm not sure if they are too busy, too rush or overworked, or short-staffed, or all of the above. Overall I was super disappointed with this experience, and find myself looking for a new vet now. :( read more

I just found this place after we my wife and I we decided to pet an indoor cat , we decided to give him a vaccination I looked in yelp to find a vet close to my house, my son and I went there Tuesday without an appointment " I didn't know I should have one" the ladies at tue reception were so nice she told me that I need an appointment but she will see if she can get me helped right away, after she made a phone call she told me yes they can we met the doctor after that she was soo sweet everybody there were so nice and sweet not only my kitten loved the place also my 4 year old did :) , thanks everyone works there for your nice hospitality, the prices were less that what I expected as well read more

This is a delayed update, but one I've been mulling over. Service has declined after Dr. Farquhar moved away. I found Dr. Ratekin difficult to work with and she didn't answer my questions, almost like she had a set script to follow. We got the services done that we needed so stars for that, but I felt like I had to keep repeating myself first to be listened to and second to make sure the correct vaccinations were being given to my two. Updated review because it was such a stark difference from the 5-star experience when we first established care here. We'll try again with one of the other doctors and see how that goes. read more

I still feel ripped off and you are saying that nothing would change from my next visit. I would recommend that when your vet talks about additions to why you are actually visiting that you let people know about the pricing? This was never mentioned or discussed and you said that you would talk to the vet about this. Please make that part of your procedures so you don't have customers feeling ripped off. . If you are told that an appointment will be $60 and that the vet than tells you about other things that aren't necessary and sells that to you I think it is bait and switch. This business is very unprofessional in regards to your pets health. They are so over booked with pets the service is horrible. Since Dr Thorne sold the new owners are very unreliable. They take a week or more to get your prescription refilled. Always with a lame excuse as to why it takes so long. It's really sad what once was a great business is now a understaffed uncaring group of Veterinarians. The front staff tries their hardest but the Dr's make the decisions. I took my small 9 year old dog here for much needed dental work. After her initial exam, she was scheduled to have her teeth cleaned and to have 2 extractions. On the day of her appointment, the vet realized that ALL of her remaining teeth were loose and needed to be pulled. I was concerned for her quality of life, but she is like a whole new person! So much happier and more energetic. Also, the price I was originally quoted didn't change, and I appreciated that. I just moved back to Santa Rosa and was looking for a local vet. I went to a few places and wasn't too impressed and then a close friend referred me to Dr. Thorne. I was so pleased with his calm demeanor and his friendly staff. I was able to get my cat in right away for the issues he was experiencing which was excellent. I did not feel rushed and I felt that Dr. Thorne took the time to answer my questions and listen to my concerns. He was thorough and I really felt that I could trust him to give my cat the best possible care, which is of great importance when you have an animal that you consider to be a member of your family, and not just a pet. The other vets I had visited prior to Alderbrook did not give me that same satisfaction or good vibes. After my first visit with Dr. Thorne, he called me over the weekend to see how my cat was doing. I thought that was very kind. And then, I had to bring my cat back to Dr. Thorne a few days later for the same issue. I didn't have an appointment and just showed up when they opened on Monday morning. They gladly took me in and I didn't have to wait very long. They helped my cat again and although seeing a vet more than twice in one week hurt my wallet, it wasn't as costly as I thought it would be. My cat clearly seems comfortable there and so do I, and I am so happy that I found Alderbrook Pet Hospital because they are just awesome! Sometimes you hit it off with a vet, and sometimes it's best to leave. I really liked the two women vets (one went to Napa/Sonoma area) ... and the other works one day a week. This pet hospital is right downtown which makes it easy to get to. Shaded parking in the back which is nice. The staff is very friendly, and as your first time there the vet's exam is free which is over $50 in savings! They have their own website which says when your pet is due for an appointment if you opt for it. The main vet is informative and nice. He can be a little monotone, but he's great at what he does from what I can tell. Definitely going to keep going to this place! read more

They are 3 blocks from my house and open on Saturday mornings, so that added a star. They are very friendly and after my puppy's recent neutering, they called to check on him afterwards. Everyone there is very nice and they accomodate early drop offs. My only complaint is some of the up selling. When we had our puppy fixed ($115), they wanted another $115 to do basic labs prior to the surgery. Completely healthy dog with no symptoms. Rubbed me the wrong way I guess. My mom and I both take our shih tzus to Alderbrook, and my brother takes his birds there, and we have had nothing but positive experiences. They have a great website with a patient portal just like I have at my doctors. The office is warm and inviting. The people are warm, friendly, compassionate, professional, and attentive. Part of me loves this place. I love how dedicated the staff is to helping animals. I've taken my cats, rabbits and dog there. What I hate about this place (and the reason that I am shopping for a new vet after over 10 years) is the constant 'up selling' that was mentioned in a previous review. They are horrible about this! Every time I go in for something they start testing for something else and then charge me for it (even when there has been no risk in my animals!). Last time I was there for tapeworms. I knew what my dog had, but they insisted I get a diagnoses. While we were there I casually asked about my dogs goopy eye and a zit like bump. I figured, since I was paying for an appoitment, I would make the most of it. Dr. Thorne says 'oh yes, I can take a look at that, but I dont think it is anything to worry about' instead of "I can look at it, but it will cost you an extra 70 dollars and I dont think it is anything to worry about", which is what was charged as I was leaving! When I have a question the doctor wants to run every possible test...just to be on the safe side. Well, I'm all for being safe when there is need, but my bank account cant afford to run every unnecessary test out there. I wish they only pushed the necessary things and kept me posted on the fees for things that I agree to during an appointment. read more

Dr Thorn takes cares of my African Gray and my 15 year old Siamese cat. I switched from the other avian vet in town b/c Dr. Thorn was about half the price for grooming, He is a kind, gentle doctor. He has brought my cat back from some serious illness about five times. The grooming prices for birds are great and the charges I've paid for the kitty, while not cheap, are reasonable and comparable with other vets. I would recommend this place highly. The veterinarian was very kind, gentle with my cat, and yet extremely knowledgeable. Their prices were nicely reasonable. He doesn't push you to buy the services. The front staff -- professional, efficient, SMART, but gentle and kind. I enjoyed their easy-going, friendly approach. Lastly but a wonderful surprise, was the building itself -- it's not the typical sterile cracker-box building. It's a beautiful old house, maybe as old as the late 1800's, but very nicely converted -- clean, with lots of charm. Very comfortable waiting room.
