Been coming to Ocean Beach PT for a while now. I saw Kristen last year until my benefits ran out and this year was matched with Natalie -- both have been absolutely wonderful to work with. I've worked with Natalie for longer and she's been super helpful in identifying muscle imbalances and posture issues that may be contributing to chronic neck and back pain I've been living with for close to 20 years. The body work she does with me has also been really helpful in managing flare-ups that can be immobilizing. I finally feel like I'm getting stronger in the right ways, although progress is slow (as most health issues are!). The office is super well-run, organized, and efficient. Tiana is super on-top of things like getting insurance authorization for visits; Ariel and Carolina at the billing office are literally the nicest people I've worked with to get questions about billing and insurance answered. They're really transparent (an unfortunately rare quality in the medical industry), proactive, and I actually feel like that I'm being put first as a patient for a change. The place is open and airy, with no exercise smell, and no equipment smell. Muni runs right by it too. The one bad thing is that there is very little parking nearby, and a lot of the spaces that are there are only big enough for a small car. The specific therapist I was assigned to is Dr Inbal Kafka. I have had to see a number of PTs in the past, and none of them were nearly as good as she is. Her analysis of issues is superb, and the exercises she has me doing have been much more effective than those given to me by other PTs. This is my second time at this facility. This time, I've been seeing Inbal for an overuse injury sustained during marathon training. It's not a straight forward injury and has been a little tricky. I really appreciate how she adjusts the plan based on feedback and pivots where needed. She's knowledgeable, easy to communicate with and makes you feel very comfortable. They have a bit of a wait for new appointments, it's because they're good and worth it! I'm very lucky to have them in the neighborhood but would absolutely recommend driving out from wherever you are in the city. read more

No one on staff seems to have much experience in dealing with CRPS. I recall talking to the owner of the joint with another PT and they had heard of/seen a mirror box, but did not have one on premises and, based on our rather relaxed convo about it, didn't seem to be inclined to get one for the facility. (I bought my own.) To be fair, PTs aren't trained to deal with this syndrome and those who do have practical knowledge of it have taken specific, extracurricular courses to gain such knowledge. (One such place: The NOI Group in Emeryville offers courses to both patients and healthcare professionals. Do check out their website for more info.) One may have a wacky thing happen with one's insurance whereby insurance monies meant for the business are sent to the insured. Some outfits simply accept said funds that arrive in the form check from the insurance co. (sign the back and 'voila!'), but OB does not do this. You'll be expected to deposit said check(s) then pay OB separately. It's a bit of a pain, tbh. Pros: friendly staff, spacious digs, just off the L-Taraval, 45 min. appt., but not always with the same PT throughout Cons: possible insurance nuttiness, will treat you for CRPS symptoms but won't necessarily have an established attack at the ready & may actually employ various methods that actually contribute to worsening symptoms (see: CRPS sufferers and ice). To save you time: Renew (usually 30 min. appts.) and Rising Sun (strictly 30 min. appts.) also don't have CRPS-knowledgable PTs on staff (although the claim was that they did). Receptionist at Therapedia told me that a PT called Greg ($200.00/hrly) has experience in treating CRPS patients, but he did tell me when we spoke on the phone that he 'couldn't promise me anything'. I called and received a call back promptly from Ocean Beach Physical Therapy when I was referred there. I was scheduled to see Inbal, one of their physical therapists right away. I've been extremely happy with her expert help and advice. Inbal has been everything I expected from a physical therapist and more. She is professional, gentle, knowledgeable and always caring. I had hip replacement surgery in mid-November and began my physical therapy at Ocean Beach PT with Inbal in early December. The facility is lovely and quite spacious; I never felt crowded. Street parking was always available. The front desk staff were great. I promptly received a callback and could schedule out six weeks' worth of sessions at one time. Inbal was absolutely fantastic. She tailored the exercises to my needs and as my recovery progressed, she added new exercises that challenged me. She was incredibly supportive and gave excellent advice and suggestions. She is quite knowledgeable and very helpful. I cannot say enough good things about her. I highly recommend OBPT to anyone who needs physical therapy. And be sure to ask for Inbal! read more

I was referred to OBPT through Urgently Ortho for some chronic knee issues and I had a great experience. Bryan's approach was patient, open-minded, and more importantly effective! I went to the Ocean beach location in great pain for my lower back and I was not a happy camper. I am a fit and health conscious person that sustained a sports injury at the gym. I literally hobbled in the front door with little hope of relief. I worked with Steve and found his advice and insight to be extremely helpful. He showed my stretches and gave me tools to use for pain reduction and relief and what do you know... IT WORK ALMOST INSTANTLY - NO BS! I do not usually hug strangers but in this case I did due to my disbelief of how effective this treatment is when dealing in pain. I highly recommend the outfit. I went to Ocean Beach Physical 'Therapy for treatment of knee and shoulder injuries and received superb care and help from physical therapist, Isaac Perloff. He's the best: knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and good humored. I've had physical therapy in other facilities with other therapists, and no one has helped me as much as Isaac. He not only worked well with me in our onsite sessions, but also helped me develop an effective routine for home exercise. I can't thank him enough. In fact, all the staff at Ocean Beach are terrific, and the physical site is immaculate, spacious, well ventilated and never overcrowded. I went to OBPT after my left knee surgery and the experience was night and day compared to other PT facility I have experienced from my right knee surgery 5 years ago. My therapist Steve Kim was a delight to work with and he knew exactly what was necessary for my recovery. He was persistent and gave me all the work out ammunition to strengthen my legs as well as balancing routine. Actually my left leg is much stronger than my right leg, he went out of his way to strengthen my right leg as well. Lastly, all the staff at this place was pleasant, attentive and on top of their game. I recommend this place very highly and if you have a choice this is the place. I broke my foot in October 2019 and I was looking for a PT and came across OBPT. I can tell you that I had such a wonderful experience! My husband and I used this place. Not impressed at all. Hubby had the owner for his "therapist". What happened to hubby was a useless pt sessions. First: owner wouldn't take him at later appointments 4-5pm sessions even though they say they open til 6:30... that was inconvenient to the owners schedule. The two time my hubby did go back - owner pointed and said - do these exercises and I'll watch while he talked on the phone and took care of other business. No real PT... but they were quick to take the co-pay upfront! I got a newish therapist. He was good but busy since he was the one that actually worked with about 2 - 3 clients at a time. He did cause pain for a frozen shoulder which is fine... but I worked more with assistants and they were nice but I never really saw progress... again they were kind enough to get paid right away. I stopped going and got my shoulder worked on from my trainer.... I guess if you are in the area and need work other than frozen shoulders- it may be good to go.... but we got to another place and they hundreds times better... actually massaged, did the workout with you, talked about the actual exercise as it's benefits to your specifics and felt like they actually care about your progress! read more

I was amazed at the great personal care I received at this physical therapy gym on Taraval. I went in with some fear as I didn't know what physical therapy entailed. The exercises Bryan gave me were gradual and so effective. I saw him twice a week, and on Wednesdays joined the water exercise class at Pomeroy pool. The gym felt safe in spite of Covid the whole time I was there, which was about five months. We started out treating some shoulder pain, then moved into treating knee pain which was affecting my ability to go down stairs. Once I got to a place where stairs were not an issue, Bryan suggested I terminate physical therapy and find another type of physical activity I could enjoy. Consequently, I joined a gym, and love it. Bryan is very knowledgeable and gained my trust early on. Even after terminating my physical therapy, I feel his support. The other therapists seem well qualified also. If you need pt, this is the best place. Five stars! read more

A combo of skiing and surfing left this middle-aged mom with a very painful shoulder this season. I wanted to find a physical therapy clinic that had a lot of experience with treating surfing shoulder injuries. This is the clinic, and when I called desperately on the day before Shelter in Place went in to place, they squeezed me in to their schedule that very minute. I saw Jake Koch, and he was incredible, knowledgeable, professional, and empathetic. Jake even continued to see me over video telehealth when the clinic had to close due to the Coronavirus. He walked me through advancing exercises each week, and my pain diminished and I was able to get back in the water. I am now seeing him for maintenance strengthening and stretching to make sure I don't reinjure it. The clinic is beautiful, open and airy, and they are incredibly responsive both on phone and email. They also take insurance. Cannot recommend OBPT and Jake Koch enough. read more

I looked for a PT facility that I would feel comfortable using during COVID lock downs and beyond. The OBPT facility itself is exceptionally well managed, from front end staff to the therapists. It is clean, well-ventilated, and completely Covid-compliant. I never felt stressed to be there. Other reviewers also talked about Steve Kim, who was my PT. He is exceptionally adept at providing PT. Patient, careful, and encouraging, he kept me motivated to do my exercises, and worked with me to improve my mobility immensely. The exercises changed with my progress, and if I had a set-back, Steve carefully analyzed the situation and provided feedback to help me. I highly recommend OBPT's facility on Taraval Street. I have had a great experience with Ocean Beach Physical Therapy. Lance has helped me to recover from two back-to-back injuries (hip and knee), and I have had good results. Lance and everyone on the team is very friendly and takes the time to really get to know the patients and figure out the best way to a quick recovery, making the process as pain-free as possible. Although I've gone in with specific injuries, I've seen them diagnose and fix long-standing chronic problems in other patients, and they seem to have experience in all types of issues and body parts. It's not a huge location, but it seems like it has everything you need, and I appreciate that they're a small, independent business rather than a big medical conglomerate. The location is just a few blocks from the beach, with pretty decent parking (for San Francisco) and fantastic public transport access, steps from the L line streetcar. Even though they're busy (for good reason), they are flexible and accommodating of scheduling, and also took care of all the insurance billing with as little pain as possible. Overall, I would definitely recommend OBPT and Lance to anyone recovering from an injury or trying to fix chronic pain. Being hurt is never fun, but OBPT will make the recovery much smoother. read more

I just finished a two-month course of physical therapy at this shop (for shoulder surgery, AC repair) and I can only say this: I am stunned at the quality of care at OBPT. My PT was Kylie E. Rowe, who I found to be unusually experienced, knowledgable, careful, and attentive. It seems there were two reasons for this. First, Kylie happens to have been a professor of physical therapy; second, this shop has a policy that in my experience is almost unique: in most if not all cases, the licensed PT works with you THROUGHOUT each of your appointments, instead of passing you off to an aide after a brief check-up. For surgery recoveries, where the slightest mistake can set you back weeks, or worse, this makes a world of difference. I cannot recommend this shop highly enough, and the same goes for Kylie. You're lucky if you get her. read more

I had frozen shoulders and was difficult to complete daily functions! I was referred to OBPT by my Chiropractor and the results were amazing! The staff and therapists were wonderful during my recovery. The front desk staff very helpful on insurance questions, they take Medicare Insurance no problem. My schedule was built around MY availability and times, usually mid morning with Jake as my therapist! He was incredibly helpful with all my exercises and my shoulders began to "THAW!!" The PT Techs that assisted with exercises were all wonderful and caring! Hey, I'm not the easiest customer to deal with. You know those people that roll in to a doctor's office with hundreds of prepared questions--and occasionally with a scowling infant/toddler in tow? Yep, that's me. Hate me as you will; I can't help it, it's who I am. That said, let me say that Lance, and the rest of the crew at OBPT, couldn't have been any more accommodating. Lance spent countless days answering my questions, talking surf, and even entertaining my little monster as I worked on my sports-related injuries. Seriously, he actually kept my 11 month-old busy and smiling while I worked out. My kid has never had such a good sitter! Best of all, he fixed up my jacked shoulders in under two months. In hindsight, I'm not sure why I chose to suffer through nearly 10 years of chronic shoulder pain; it turns out the solution was just around the corner. I have needed physical therapy on and off for the last 9 years, and Ocean Beach is the best experience I've had. Prior to this I've been to other private clinics and Kaiser, where I often felt like a number and had a tricky time making sure I got a knowledgable PT. My amazing surgeon at Stanford recommended Lance by name, so I came in with high expectations. Right away everyone in the office knew my name and greet me every time I come it. The equipment is all new and the space super clean. No one is rushing you out or cutting you off if the appointment goes long; they make sure you get in the exercises and work that you need. Lance definitely knows his stuff and seems familiar with both conventional and newer treatments. He allows me to push myself far without letting me overdo it, and we discuss my week to week progress as well as long term therapy goals. Things I really like- water therapy offered once a week (even if you have access to a pool in SF, I find this is hard to do on your own), icing at the end of each appointment, and the ocean/beach pictures throughout the office. Don't even know where to begin. I wasted 2 months and hundreds of dollars at Potrero Physical Therapy. After injuring my lower back at the gym in mid October 2017, my GP referred me to Potrero PT. When it took 2 weeks to get an initial consultation, I should have known to back off but my GP assured me this practice was worth waiting for. When every interaction with Lupe and the other front desk receptionists were rude and inconsiderate, I should have walked away, but like anyone with a back injury, I was vulnerable and trusted the professionals. Over the next 2 months I would see two different therapists, who did not communicate with each other, assigned me conflicting exercises that aggravated my condition, and during one appointment cut our session short by 30 minutes because of a "staff meeting" which turned out to be a team lunch that I saw when I exited the consultation room. Disgraceful. Still had to pay full price though. During each session, I would communicate my re-occurring symptoms, questions, and concerns but the therapists were always baffled. When I kept insisting that I wasn't getting any better, my therapist asked me a question every patient fears: "What's your story again? I mean..what are your symptoms and how did the injury happen?". WHAT. 7 sessions in and you have no idea what's going with me? I had to run through the full story again, repeating every symptom and pain point I'd been experiencing and finally my therapist realized there was a strong likelihood that I had a bulging disc. 2 x-rays and 1 MRI later, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc in my L5. As soon as the results came in, this was the final straw. I called Ocean Beach PT to cancel all my future appointments and the receptionist was eager to know what went wrong. I explained the story and she seemed concerned, even promised me that the manager would call me later that day to offer support and attempt to rectify what had happened, but I never received a call. Typical. Save yourself months of wasted time, money, and emotion and avoid this place. read more

I was fortunate to work with Inbal after a primary knee surgery with complications, that ultimately lead to a second surgery and cannot say how wonderful she and the entire team are. As someone who works as an ICU nurse, the level of teamwork and professionalism matched with a warm and friendly disposition is rare and unmatched. The facility is spacious, open and clean with street parking. They also have offsite pool options for clients to look into as well and help navigate that process. Lance, the owner took time with me as well, and my plan was very individualized. They met me where I was at and tailored my regiment with every session. The front desk staff is friendly and quick to respond to any emails or phone communication. You can tell the entire team are all committed to getting their patients back to their normal activity level.. I paid out of pocket and it was worth every penny. I have been a patient at OBPT for about three months and my condition has improved greatly thanks to therapist K.G. She is very knowledgable, experienced and professional. She has done a superb job concerning my knees, hip and back pain. I'm now able to walk much better and longer distances.
