I have taken the 3 hour trip from upstate Schenectady NY to Sheepshead Bay many times. This is by far my favorite charter! I have brought my wife, children, in-laws, & friends on multiple occasions with absolute confidence everyone will have a great time. The captain makes sure everyone has the best chance to find fish while the deckhands seem to enjoy some unspoken battle amongst themselves to see who can be the most helpful! You will never go without bait. Rods & reels provided for the whole family. Even if you bring your own gear, they have it so dialed in from the rod size to the reel capacity to the line diameter to the oz & hook sizes! Respectfully leave your gear home. When I was having difficulty picking up the right techniques in tautog fishing, the crew were able to offer helpful feedback regarding my technique, bait, and rig setup so that I was able to improve my hookup dramatically. I took this boat out, once again, for a terrific fluking trip. We ran nearly the entire NY Bite, searching for Fluke and hit on a steady supply of keepers. This is one of those days where the fish were not cooperating, but the persistance and knowledge of the Captain and the Crew assured that we had keepers all about the boat anyway! We picked up one on this drop, two on another drop, and we nailed huge keeper Sea Bass all along the way. And the company on the boat was excellent. The not so no now mate, Chris, is gregarious, friendly, and knowledgeable. He hooked me up with a rig that turned my whole trip around. Eventually, by the end of the trip, we managed to hit on a bull faced ray that offered much excitement and entertainment, and that was eventually released. I highly recommend you charter a private fishing sunset cruise with Ocean Eagle V! Last night I chartered the Ocean Eagle V for my 30th birthday party with 20 of my friends. (We could have had up to 30 for the same price). Captain Greg and four other incredibly sweet fishermen accompanied us. I chose the Ocean Eagle V over other charters in the area because Captain Greg sounded so nice and relaxed on the phone and was the most accommodating to my needs (of bringing tons of catering, too many drinks, and pink birthday decorations on the boat.) They let us come early and set up the boat, provided clean coolers with ice, and had no problem leaving whenever we were ready. The boat is huge with an inside portion, two bathrooms, and a very nice upper deck. If someone in your party doesn't want to be near the fishing there are plenty of other spaces to be. My friends and I are not seasoned fishers by any means. The professionals on the boat helped us every step of the way! They taught us how to bait, cast, and reel it in. If someone was squirmish about unhooking a fish they were happy to help. They cleaned, filleted, and packed all of the fish for us! Not only that, Captain Mark is a gourmet chef and prepared our fresh catches for us three ways! They were all so nice and great to chat with. Captain Greg brought us to an area of the ocean that had a beautiful view of the city. They moved the boat anytime the tide got rough. We watched a phenomenal sunset and moonrise and even had a full rainbow in view. At night, there were various fireworks shows all around the bay! When we were all exhausted from fishing our hearts out, we headed back to the dock and hugged goodbye! We were on the boat for five hours, which was absolutely perfect. (After, we all walked to Roll N Roaster, which was also amazing.) read more

I would give this boat 10 stars if I can. I fished today on the ocean eagle and I can't thank the captain enough for making sure he was on top of the porgies all day. He kept us all informed on what exactly he was doing through the loudspeaker and if you been on plenty of fishing boats you can imagine how annoying it can be to move without having a clue where you're heading. All the mates are great, friendly and funny. They offer to clean your fish if you have already have a bucket full of porgies. I saved the best for last. The cook, Kathy(im sure that's her name) makes one hell of a burger and fries. You would think a fishing boat would offer frozen fries but they were actually fresh cut fries cooked to perfection. They also had the options of fried onions. This is obviously a fishing boat/gourmet burger spot. Thanks everyone on the ocean eagle for a great experience. I bought, along with seven of my other friends, tickets for this past Saturdays trip. I got the tickets for my boyfriends birthday so we could fish and spend time together outside because it was a gorgeous day. Sadly the experience I had was awful and damn near disgusting. There was this one particular guy on the boat that worked there or that fished and cleaned up the place so he didn't have to pay I don't know what his deal was but he started being super vulgar to my boyfriend about tying him up for sex or something about his dead mother. Mind you this was 8:30 in the morning and he was already super drunk. We asked him to go away and then he decided to touch my mother who was there and hit on her and that's when it got really uncomfortable. He also threw bait at my friend to get her attention and hit on her. Also, I read previous reviews about the food and I was pumped about getting to have a burger on the boat but to be honest Cathy who did all the cooking did not wash her hands once or wear gloves. no gloves at all on her. She touched everything and that was nasty. Overall, go to a different boat. No amount of $65 for a day trip is worth this hell. These guys are nasty and disgusting. I haven't fished for 19 so years and it was a blast to take my 10 year old out on a fishing boat for his first full day. The crew were top notch and well knowledgeable. One of the mates Glenn was especially helpful and was kind enough to help my boy out with some tips and even boosted his confidence when he wasn't catching keepers (eventually he caught a keeper). I personally have never tried the food on the boot, but cook seemed friendly and my son had zero complaints about his cheeseburger. All in all we will definitely go out fishing with this boat again. read more

What a great boat, but it's shame that they have such a nasty crewmember (ANGEL) to ruin what would be a perfect afternoon. The boat is kept extremely clean and in perfect running order. The cook (Glen) makes do with what little cooking space he has on the boat and always has a smile. The Captain (Gregg) is extremely knowledgeable and tries his hardest to make sure everyone catches a fish. The second crewman (Chris) is down to earth and tries his hardest to accommodate every patron on the boat. If it wasn't for ANGEL, I would have given a "5 STAR" review. ANGEL has a lot to learn about customer service and how to deal with people, not just his friends aboard the boat. read more

I have been fishing part boats for the past few years when my fair weather friends winterize their boats or just aren't available to go out. With that being said, this boat was one of the best experiences I have had since moving to NY from San Diego. The small crew on this boat is amazing. They are just as friendly as they can be and by the time you leave you will feel like family. Their mate, Tommy, is probably the most helpful mate I have ever fished with. He was an absolute pleasure to be around so make sure when you see this staple on the boat, tip him well! The food in the galley was awesome. I have eggs and pancakes on the way out and a fat cheese steak at lunch. By the time I got to lunch I had the added flavor of white crabs and black fish on my sandwich and I am not complaining! The captain worked so hard to find us a spot. We slow picked fish most of the morning while watching all the other part boats pull up nothing. One thing I noticed was we could always see the other boats but we were not in the middle of the fleet on the same hole. The Capt. moved frequently when the bite wasn't on and was almost always on his own fishing hole vs. the rest of the fleet. The bathrooms were clean, which is something I normally don't care about, but on this trip I took my Mom, who had the time of her life and complimented the bathroom being cleaner than most public restrooms. It was a pleasure fishing on this boat. We had full bellies and full bags of fish when we got off the boat! This is my new "home" boat! read more

We've got a captain who would rather point the finger than recognize genuine feedback and do the right thing, so let's get into it... I'm following up on Rachel's comment below, because Yelp doesn't allow users to reply. Let's me put things simply, because it appears the captain would rather blame a customer and ignore genuine concerns instead of recognizing authentic feedback and apologizing for not delivering on what was explicitly and implicitly expected upon purchase of a ticket on his vessel. Here's what you can expect if you buy a ticket on this boat: 1. Some guy named Jeff (who apparently worked on the boat) randomly and drunkenly grabbed my girlfriends mother and said "he was just playing around" after I politely asked him to back off because he was obviously drunk... you all know what kind of guy he is, who would want to pay for this kind of awkwardness? This same guy came back multiple times and told me his wife or daughter had died? This guy is a serious liability. 2. The cook never washed her hands and there isn't a food inspector in the world that would certify their operation. I honestly don't know how they have a license to serve food. I intentionally packed light on food, shame on me right? 3. We didn't catch any fish (a few tiny porgies). I get it. Every day isn't the day. Sadly, this was the most understandable issue with the boat. If this was the only issue I wouldn't have left a negative review. I was thinking of writing a few positive things, but now I've got the captain telling my girlfriend she's crazy. So you know what, we had 5 people in my party... tell me I'm crazy and you'll get 4 more 1 Stars. Do the right thing captain: recognize, apologize, and move on. Clean up your boat and start taking some responsibility for your operation. Or don't, because I'm not buying tickets again. This review is for normal people who aren't sure which fishing boat to go with (there are other options). How it has the rating it has is beyond comprehension. Ocean Eagle V is a well run fishing boat with owners and crew who seem to genuinely care that their customers have a good time. This boat specializes in bottom fishing for porgies and sea bass -- and for blackfish (aka tautog) when they are in season, after Oct. 1. The occasional triggerfish or striped bass is also a possibility. This is a good boat for boat novices and experienced fisherpeople: -- Crew members will demonstrate how to bait your hook, cast and reeling in your catch. -- Fishing poles are included in the $55 fee ($60 if you opt to enter the "pool," a contest awarding cash to the person who catches the largest fish of the day). -- Each rig costs $2 and includes a leader, two hooks and a 6-ounce sinker. The mate will also knot this onto your line. -- Cleaning and fileting of fish is done by the crew, on request, but you should tip for this service. The galley (a kitchen on a boat) is stocked much better than I expected. Breakfast consisted of cheese omelets, pancakes and sausage. Lunch included meatballs, beans & rice and fried chicken. The afternoon snack smelled very sweet: deep-fried cheesecake. All of this costs extra, of course. My only purchase of the day was a beer. Selection was limited to Budweiser, but at $2.50 a can, it was a refreshing and affordable treat. Now for a brief discussion about the most important aspect of a day aboard the Ocean Eagle V: the hunt for fish. Went on a recent fishing trip for the day and it was great. I hadn't fished in years and went with my husband and visiting father-in-law (frequent fisher) and everyone had fun. Captain Greg was great at finding the fish and we caught porgie, trigger fish, sea bass and a few other odd ones. Took my 8 year old son out MM day weekend, 12:30-5:30 charter and had a very nice experience. The boat was clean and on time for arrival and drop-off. Getting on the boat, all the reels were in place and rigged if you needed them. It was a short trip out to fish and the mates were incredibly patient and helpful. We caught a good deal of little fish(water still cold in the bay), mainly croaker, spot and some whiting. Overall I would give the trip a grade of a B+, just because the larger fish were't running yet. read more

The Ocean Eagle is the premier bottom fishing boat in NY Harbor. It is a fishing boat and not a cruise ship. The accommodations are all built for finding fish, catching fish, and putting fish in the barrels. The fishermen on the boat are not the kind of people one finds in a cocktail lounge. They are polite, and efficient, with a workman's attitude towards clients. They tie knots, untangle lines, dispense with fishing tips, and prepare your fish. They are the best at it in NYC. In general, I fish on one of two vessels out of NYC. The Ocean Eagle is one of those two boats, and it's puts fish in my bucket repeatedly over years. Captain Greg has an encyclopedic memory of landing spots for fish from the Shark River in NJ, all the way to Jones Beach Inlet, everywhere in the middle and beyond. The first Mate Glen has spend a lifetime on the water and is a knots expert and controls the safety of every inch of the boat. He has dealt with every kind of tackle and dozens of species of fish. You want him on you side when you get out on the water. The third brother, Geogh, who is a bear of a man, is one of the most talented fisherman that one will ever find. He can catch everything and anything and is generous with his knowledge and is even good for a few laughs from time to time. For a first time fisherman, the experience can be a bit bewildering. The fun is in the fishing. It is not in the sitting arraignments, or the food (although as far as fishing boats are concerned, Kathy in the Galley is a really really good cook). Yes, you will be sitting on a little small wooden bench. Yes, you are surrounded by fishing gear all around you. Yes, sailors can smoke and curse sometimes. But it is really exciting when you get a big fish on the hook an d you are experiencing the raw elements of mother nature on the open ocean... and cheap! A whole trip, with tackle, bait, rods, food and tips for the whole trip, 8 hours or entertainment, can cost less than $80 for the entire day, or just ten buck an hour, for an exhilarating, life affirming experience and you are likely to bring home a couple of days of dinner! Sundays in the summer, the boat is often packed to the rails. Weekdays are a bit less filled. This is an experience like camping, not a night at the Blue Note. read more

Best fishing boat in sheepshead bay. I fished on every boat that sailed out of sb and ocean eagle is the best for both novice and pro. Super friendly crew with glen as 1st mate. He might seen intimidating at first, imagine a 300lb big white guy in your head, but he's very friendly and funny. Price is competitive with everyone else, it does get crowded on the weekends but not sardine like. Always comfortable moving about. Lastly, it's the fish. U are almost guaranteed to catch something. I been going with oe for 15-20 years and don't recall ever was skunked. The captain will go out of his way to make sure everyone catch. In conclusion , friendly and knowledgable service+good price+ fishes to take home=happy customers. If u do go on the boat, please give glen a kiss but only if u r a male. That will make his day. Was here couple months ago and I totally recommend the experience with these guys it's a family boat and they are very friendly even though sometimes they could act as if not but they are and very attentive. Really give it a try if you like fishing and even if you don't it's a good experience trying out something new and getting out of that daily routine so don't think too much about it and head out to some fun. My fishing skills may have been the reason why I caught the number of fish that I caught, it may have been that I got seasick it may have been for a number of different reasons but never did I blame you or your mate as to why I did not catch many fish. I stated I never caught fluke on this boat because I never went out fluking on this boat always bottom fishing porgies only. As I stated that too, however you took offense to it. as I stated I can't change your way of thinking nor your way of comprehending. Nonetheless you should not be offended by what was posted it was clearly compliments and praises to you and staff. But it's okay. The boat was overcrowded, which meant that when we sat we were elbow-to-elbow on the narrow wooden benches. There are hidden additional fees, like having to pay for the fishing rod once you are on the boat (how is that not included on the $63 fare for a fishing boat?). The proprietors of the experience became increasingly drunk throughout the day and began harassing customers. While waiting to order food - lunch is NOT included in the fare, though the website hints that it may be - one of the men running the boat heckled a friend and I from across the room, taunting that we were probably virgins and that he could fix that for us. He proceeded to note a bruise on my leg and laughed that my boyfriend probably got rough with me last night (because physical abuse is obviously hilarious) before crossing the room to stroke my thigh. I did not engage in any of this or even look at him until he touched me, at which point I left the line and sat for the remainder of the trip afraid that he or his coworkers would reappear to continue harassing my friend and I. When they had to pass by to help other customers reel in fish they did indeed continue to make uncomfortable and rude comments. I was here as a part of a group and am not an avid fisherman. If I had been, however, AND had not been harassed, I would still have been disappointed in this experience. Others on the boat caught very little the day we went out and the captain himself lamented frequently how he was not finding the right spots. read more

I was offended by the mate on the Marilyn Jean IV so I took at shot at the OCEAN EAGLE. I paid $60 and it was worth it, the ride to the fishing ground was about an hour and pass Sandy Hook. The mates were friendly and made the experience better. I would go this boat again. read more

I have taken friends, family and even cousins that were a little different and they were shown how to fish and treated with kindness. They know fishing and i honestly don't know what boat Robert B and Rachel L were on because that doesn't sound at all right. It seems like they had a bad day fishing and would rather be negative. Do passengers sometimes get drunk and belligerent? Yes - on all party boats there is an unfortunate element that does not know how or when to stop. I have seen the crew even handle those individuals in a professional manner. This boat and crew by far will give you the best time fishing and if they are biting - you will catch. I went on a fishing trip with close friends and was disappointed with the experience in the end. The captain was creepy and had terrible customer service. At multiple times during this eight hour boat ride, he approached my friends and made comments that were inappropriate and at one point, touched my friend's mom. When politely asked to leave, he got defensive and complained openly about us. He kept screaming about how nice of a person he was and at the same time, ignoring the boundaries set by the patrons of the boat. That's not what nice people do. The captain also hit on and threw bait (slimy pieces of raw fish that have been sitting in the sun) at my friend to get her attention. The food situation was a mess. Not only did the woman cooking not wash her hands, but touched every piece of food she possibly could. At one point she was mixing seasoning into a batch of fries using nothing but her fingers.
