This is a small, but convenient asian market on the east side. Its right on Mill Plain, but easily missed. I love it for the occasional ramen purchase, but mostly because they carry Bui tofu. Its the best tofu I've ever had, and I can't go back to grocery store brands. They also carry Taiwanese cabbage. Nuff said! read more

They sell seafood like crab and lobster at discounted price that supposedly had just been removed from tanks that morning but I have cooked and eaten crabs and lobster for many years and know for a fact that these were in fact not freshly deceased product due to consistency of the meat once cooked very mushy which means old and previously frozen. It is hard to determine the quality of these products before cooking unless they are still alive, so beware of this market they will sell you very old and possibly health hazardous products read more

We recently moved to Vancouver and visited the Ocean King Market for the first time yesterday. We found that they have a decent selection of items. The store isn't laid out exceptionally well, is quite cluttered, but not the worst we've ever seen. Upon checking out, our experience was ruined by the female employee working at the register. We asked her if they accepted American Express and her response was "You don't see the sign?" in quite a condescending way. She could have simply said "No" and called it a day. I wish I would have taken a picture of the register area because there are no less than 7 hand written signs posted all over the register area that would have taken a minute or so to read through to discover they don't take American Express. All said, we will not be going back here based on our one time experience. read more

This little market in a quiet strip mall may not be the cleanest, freshest, or best Asian market, but it is convenient with a limited selection of comfort Chinese, Vietnamese, and other Asian food and seafood. The produce section is especially small and depressing. The fresh and frozen fish is a-ok ... and the main reason to Ocean King Market eeks out 3 stars. We go about once a month when we are simply too lazy to drive another 15 minutes into Portland. Service and friendliness matches the prices and quality ... just barely into the a-ok range. If you are in East Vancouver and need Asian food this may be the best choice you have, even though it isn't the cleanest, freshest, or best. read more

Once again I have come here, this is my favorite seafood market :-) today my husband and I bought 25 lbs of Manila Clams ( they gave us a discount for buying a 25 lb bag ) we bought 2 dozen oysters, and 1 lb of LIVE shrimp, some green onion, and a ginger root. Oh yeah starting this labor day off right, its a seafood feast to go with the Halibut, Salmon, and Swordfish I bought in Seattle :-) I love the Ocean King Market, the people are super nice and very helpful, I was kind of leary about buying live shrimp because I've never cooked them before, but the woman there told me how to make them so I am really amped to give this a try. This store is cheating customers. I bought a small fish that came out to 2.8 pounds, after back home I weigh it is 1.9 pounds , a tiny fish cost me $28? so be aware if you shop there, I should learn my lesson by now, last time I was cheated by them is I noticed the hot sauce I bought the expired dated been manually changed. Love this store because they provide Asian foods and condiments that the bigger markets don't have. In my case for today's visit, they had Shaosing, an Asian rice wine that I use frequently. Freddie's had a 8oz size for $10.99! I got a 25.3 oz bottle at Ocean King for $2.39. HUUUUUGE SAVINGS. Negatives, their selection of fish and produce is lacking. Now live Dungeness crab for $3.59/lb!! My parents live down the street from here and come often for their asian food needs. Compared to prices we're used to in San Diego, the produce, random sauces and knick knacks are slightly higher. But it should be expected since they are such a small establishment and probably don't get the same deals as big markets like 99 ranch. The quality of their meats and seafood is fresh. Sometimes they run out of good live fish, which is a bummer, but if you're lucky to come when the tanks are full... you pretty much hit the jackpot. They sell live dungeness crab which is my most favorite thing in the world, and a lot of yummy Asian groceries. Sadly, they don't sell plain tapicoa pearls (only the pre-flavored, instant cook kind). I got seafood flavored seaweed snacks. Nomnomnom. read more

This isn't a terrible place as they have an okay selection but when me and my fiancé went there last, we bought 2 lobsters and a fish and asked for them all to be cleaned. We get home to find the fish still has the heart and the lobsters still alive. read more

Love that this place exists so I don't have to drive over the bridge to find live seafood. Not particularly the greatest or cleanest selection of seafood, I'd definitely stay away from their frozen area, but if you're not wanting to make a 30 minute drive to Portland then this is your place. I was very pleased with Ocean King. We stopped in today for the first time to check it out, since I am trying to learn my way around my new hometown Vancouver. They have live crabs, clams, shrimps and lobster, and what looked like tilapia all swimming in tanks! We didn't get any seafood (just had a crab feast and have salmon in the fridge). But it looks like a great resource, the prices were very reasonable and live is the way to go with seafood. The veggie section, while small, was full of fresh good-looking produce. I picked up some beautiful, absolutely perfect bean sprouts, bitter melon ($1.99/lb, not bad!), a huge and juicy ginger root, basil and mint. They also stock Bui tofu puffs, which are a local product from Portland, so I got a package of these as well. Bitter melon and tofu soup for dinner tonight! Glad I checked Ocean King Market out, it's going to be on the regular grocery rotation I think. read more

Bad, Bad, Bad experience from this live seafood market. My first time was live lobsters, second was live sea bass and now is live Red Shrimp. Their live seafood often time sitting in their tank for so long, they don't keep track of how long their seafood were in the tank until they all sold. The don't really care if their seafood gone bad or not. They just want to sell and get your money. I told the owner a few times about their seafood, but they were ignored and do nothing, just said really and offered no sympathy for you. BAD BAD BAD. My lobsters were so bad, it was soft, smelly and almost gone, the meat was not tender anymore even thought I bought them live and go home cook right away. Same thing with my sea bass and now tonight I bought more than 4lbs of red shrimp, they were $16.99/lb, not cheap. I am not complain about the price, I am just talking about their quality. Live sea food must be fresh and tender when you bought and cook right away. They should not soft, smelly and powder..... just to name a few. You got my picture. So, if you're going to buy live sea food from this store, you should think twice, or even third or fourth times before buying them. I WILL NOT BUY THEIR LIVE SEA FOOD EVER AGAIN. read more

Bought 6 crab yesterday, and asked to have them cooked, and cleaned. When i got ready to rinse off the next night, and my guests were seated, found they were raw. I had to cook them, and they were not as good of quality if they would have been cooked whole. $97, and threw half away! Stopped by today, and explained to a young man what had happened, and he said they don't cook them. so why didn't they tell me when i asked? Asked for some kind of discount, because I would come back, knowing I had to cook them, and he said he couldn't do anything. Will stick with Safeway, or Freddy's, from now on! read more

I have been going to this market for several years now, mainly just to stock up on oyster sauce and dried noodles. Occasionally I will pick up a few extras, such as vegetables or treats for my daughter. A few months ago I arrived right when they were supposed to open, and after 5-10 minutes a white mini-van came rushing in to the parking lot and several young adults and one older one came pouring out, unlocking the door and running around to get the store open. I could understand if they likely got caught in traffic, but I would think that they would be there way before the opening start time, to set things out and up. I felt awkward and in the way. Today, I stopped by for my oyster sauce and some treats for my daughter. It was pretty busy. As I approached the register, one of the other young men came up and began carrying on a lengthy conversation with the cashier. The cashier basically rung up two people in front of me, and myself, without uttering a single word to any of us. In fact, he didn't even make eye contact with me. Instead he shoved my receipt at me to sign and kept on talking. I spotted something of interest behind him and asked what it was and if I could see it. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about (probably the language barrier) and I felt like I was interrupting him, when actually he should have been attending to me the whole time. I don't speak Chinese, which I'm sure contributed to the rudeness. And I know I'm only buying a couple of items, but that did not warrant such poor customer service. I was making linguine and clams and was looking for fresh clams. Didn't want to go to PDX so bought them at the Ocean King Market. I bought 4 pounds of live Manila clams and they were very good quality and very reasonably priced. Like most asian markets, you scoop the clams out of an aerated tank yourself and bag them. I like this because you can check for dead ones or cracked shells. The rest of the store had a limited selection of asian products. It is run by Chinese so has fewer of the southeast asian products than the Vietnamese run markets. They did have fresh Thai chili peppers at the check out counter which are hard to come by these days because of the California drought. The produce on the day I was there looked to be reasonable quality. Service is typical for an asian market, they will help you but somewhat reluctantly. They do speak English though which is good. I cook more Cantonese cuisine than Vietnamese or Thai so this market works well for me. The live fish selection includes clams, oysters, spot prawns, crab and cabezon. I didn't ask what they had frozen. I will definitely be back. read more

The selection is very small. We didn't find anything we needed or wanted to buy. There was a good amount of customers inside and a constant line to pay. This market just opened around the corner from my house so I decided to go check it out. They sell live seafood on one side of the market, and the other side has various canned, dried and fresh Asian goods. The live seafood tanks are full of fish, crabs, clams, snails, and such. The owners are very helpful and can explain how to cook, and eat everything they sell. During my last trip, I bought some Dungeness crabs, clams and periwinkles for dinner. I had never eaten periwinkles before, but they turned out to be easy to cook and tasted great. Some people may shy away from live seafood, but alive is the freshest you can get. Along with the seafood, they have a variety of different meats that range from quail, to different cuts of fish, beef and chicken. This is a great place to try new things, and they get shipments of "new things" twice a week. The dry goods area isn't as big as some other Asian grocery stores in the area, but they only recently opened so the open spaces should fill up soon. The coruscations I brought home or dinner were spectacular and a lot cheaper than any of the stores in the area. I am planning on making a trip in there once a week just to see what new delight can be found. read more

I always drop by when I'm on Mill Plain. They are situated in an unfortunate location. Which requires a U turn if you don't desire to go toward 205. They deserve all 4 stars just for stocking Cornic. They are a lighter, garlicky version of Corn Nuts. That aside...they are a butcher shop/ fish market and the smells associated should be expected and not criticized. The staff have always been extremely helpful when asked. Please don't expect to be followed around 'Gap' style and asked if you need help. They are often busy! Their fresh fish/shellfish prices are great! I like to shop the 'dinged and dented' bin 'o crabs and fish. Some of my best homemade meals were the result of the deals I reaped from that bin. Their condiment choices are extensive. They have fresh produce and Thai peppers at a steal of a price! Go. Shop. Be adventurous and don't be afraid to ask questions! Live a little!
