So disappointed at this "resort " if you can call this a resort . First of all theres no vallet parking you need to find a parking on street and they are full. No help with luggage is supper small . this place is is like a little upscale motel 6 just way more pricier. the pool super small no bar nothing to do not even music dead place . The only people we seen here is 50+ . they make it look the place nice ,big and fun for family and is nothing boring . Not worth your money this is not a resort. and to top it off is the cheap cable not even movies for kids or for anyone I have better cable at home . the breakfast part is coffee and beagle few apples and bananas orange juice and yogurt more like snacks . read more

This place is beautiful but they don't provide you with water or anything to drink and there are no vending machines or any places to even purchase beverages. No one at the front desk all morning and when you call someone answers from a different location and can't answer any questions or help at all. We stay at boutique hotels all over the world.. we would never recommend this place to a friend. I give this hotel 3 stars for the following reasons, 1 -our room had ants all over the bathroom & kitchen. 2- The stove in the in the kitchen had a pile of grease in the cracks 3- there was something dark red that was dried on the floor at the base of the fridge. 4- They make you pay for paper towels and to be honest this one was new to me, every hotel that i've stayed in that has a full size kitchen already has paper towels in it, seems odd to require the guest to pay for it. 5- There was also no oven mittens so i was required to use face towels to get the stuff out of the oven. 6- Also, think with them being so close to the beach that a broom should be in every room to help sweep out the sand. 7- wanted to complain during our stay, however, read reviews where a couple was kicked out after saying they had a bad check in and we didn't want it to happen to us. ...... now with that being said this hotel is really cute with the perfect location to the stairs down to beach right across the street. Didn't seem to have too much traffic going down the street. Parking was ok, we lucked out to find the last spot after checking in late. Beautiful property. Nice location. Unfortunately, you can't have your window shade open if you want any privacy at all, so are stuck in a closed box. The pillows are shockingly uncomfortable and the refrigerator began yodeling in the middle of the night both nights I was here. Vent fan in bathroom doesn't work. There were late night revelers swearing up a storm outside my window at 3 AM. That said, the staff have been kind and helpful. Overall it was disappointing stay at a high price point. read more

Don't write this review off as coming from just some hard-to-please guest. Short story: We booked a one bedroom, received a studio with a pull-out couch that was unusable (urine stains, springs, dusty, so gross). The "manager" Barry took the whole day to respond to our concerns about paying for a one-bedroom. His solution was to offer us a condo he owned in Oceanside or "upgrade" us to several different larger studios in his complex having us move a total of four times for our seven night stay. We drove to oceanside and saw what i can only describe as a moldy, dirty frat-house with ripped furniture that looked like it may have come from the side of the road. We chose the second option of changing rooms every several days and decided to make the best of the situation. We didn't complain, we didn't even ask for a price adjustment we just wanted to have a pull-out couch that my daughter could sleep on. I made the huge mistake of putting a review on trip advisor explaining that we didn't get a one bedroom even though we thought that is what we booked. I wasn't mean or angry but it did explain what happened to us. So Barry, the ever-so-mature manager got angry and told the front desk to let us know that he was going back on what we agreed on and decided to not let us stay at the hotel. His priority was to case us harm at that point. I tried to reason with him and literally begged him to reconsider since this was our one family vacation that we had looked forward to for months. I apologized and told him that I would change my review and asked that he please reconsider. He just couldn't have cared less. His goal at that point was to be be vindictive and just plain mean. I had to call and dispute the charge to my Visa as he did not issue us a refund. It has been such an unbelievably bad experience. We did find another hotel but it's a single room and we have to move three times to a different rooms because everything is booked. I'm grateful that we were able to find somewhere in Carlsbad to stay. Needless to say, Ocean Palms will never receive a good word from me. My room needs some maintenance. It was ok, but you know, just that few too many spots of rust, and crumbly cement spots. We made a few 1800 calls. I searched the sheet they gave us to see if these were chargeable, couldn't see anything, so we figured they would be free or minimal charge. Wrong! We got a bill for $18.55. We lodged a complaint, and called them. They said the manager would call but he didn't. It's a small amount but shows the crap level of service and attitude from management. Other staff were helpful. Update: the new manager has kindly offered to fix up the phone charges. Really a great place for families. It's not 'luxury' but it's definitely clean and offers everything you and your family or group will need for a nice vacation. The kitchens are really well stocked.... They even have wine & champagne glasses. The bathrooms are nice. Our shower had two shower heads which was very nice for getting two little ones clean at the same time. The beds were pretty comfortable. We could have used extra 'regular' pillows instead of so many decorative pillows. If you are in a larger room (we had a two bedroom), don't stress out about the limited air conditioning in the room. There is only a thru-wall unit in the living room. It's pretty strong and it cools down the room quickly. Carlsbad has a really mild climate so even if the room is hot & stuffy when you check in, it will cool down quickly. Keeping the windows open at night with the fans on will keep it really chilly if you like to sleep in a colder room. We will definitely go back. read more

I was a little nervous staying here because we booked our room before reading all the Yelp reviews (and all the reviews on Tripadvisor were full of five stars?) but thankfully, everything was pretty awesome. They've clearly put in a lot of effort into renovating their place, as everything looked brand new and nicely designed. Mind you, this isn't the Four Seasons or anything but for a small hotel across the street from the beach and a block from downtown Carlsbad, it was pretty sweet. Our kitchen was new and clean, our bathroom was nice (though no hair dryer and the faucet handles were a little loose), plenty of towels, a dining table, and our nice king size bed was comfy. A good option for families with young children or couples who are making the most out of a beach vacation--you know, by cooking their own meals, stocking a fridge full of snacks and spending most of their time out on the sand. We were neither but I'll bookmark this place in case we ever become one of them. read more

This place is a great place to get away! The rooms here are top notch with full kitchens, lots of space, and the bathrooms are awesome! Full jaccuzzi bath tub and a 3 headed shower! Second floor rooms have incredible view of the ocean through the giant window or the Dutch front door. Though a bit on the pricy side, the fact that all of the beach toys and supplies you need are included make it a great experience. In a nutshell: RIP OFF and Unscrupulous!! As the person in my family charged with organizing family reunions, I looked into this place as a possibility for our next summer reunion. Since I'm from Carlsbad, I'd driven past this place and thought "looks cute, good location," looked on line at their rooms and thought "PERFECT!" Decided we'd give this place a trial run over Thanksgiving with a mini-reunion.... so, I booked a room online for the third weekend of November thinking that was the weekend of Thanksgiving. My credit card was charged the full amount immediately [??!!]. Thought this was extremely odd, but didn't really care since I intended to stay there, so "whatever..." I thought. One of my relatives quickly informed me that T'Day was actually the LAST Thursday! Not knowing how to correct my error on line, I phoned and spoke with the front desk. told him my error and made inquiries as to costs for pets, discounts, etc. and called it a day. I sent an email out to my relatives who then called and booked rooms. Cut to the 3rd Thursday of November... I got a call around 11:30 pm asking if I was going to check in. The guy was nice and I told the him that I was part of a group checking in the following week. He said he'd check with the owner and get back to me. In the next couple of days I got a call that the owner would let me move my reservation, but I'd have to pay for an "upgraded" room since my level of room was sold out. I was a bit miffed since I'd corralled the rest of my relatives into staying there, and totally overwhelmed with the details of putting together a T'Day for 30 people. The owner called me to repeat his "offer" [which was about $100 more on top of what I'd already paid] and I told him that given that I've got accommodations at my mom's house I didn't want to spend $200 more. He repeated his "offer" several more times as if presenting new options. He refused to give me my money back and told me I'll have a credit! Never heard of something so asinine given that the weekend I'd technically booked wasn't Thanksgiving nor was it peak season. On a side note, the feedback I got from relatives was that most the rooms were pretty crappy and that they didn't even have blow dryers in the room, but offer to sell them to you in the lobby! I've stayed at this resort before and loved it so I booked a trip and brought my family and extended family down... The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, the grounds are beautiful and it is right across the street from the beach and very close to shops and within walking distance to the train station. However, the facilities could have been far better. The AC unit didn't work the entire time we were there. EVERY DAY we had maintenance workers in and out. I have a baby so that disrupted nap times and I couldn't take a nap if I wanted to (I was entitled to a nap, I was on vacation). Instead of enjoying myself I was fighting with the AC unit and cleaning up all the water that it kept leaking everywhere. BTW: this unit WAS upgraded. We were offered no sort of compensation or even to switch rooms. To top it off, when we checked out, I was told that I was going to be charged $240 for an "over room occupancy fee" even though we weren't over the room occupancy, we had only asked them if we could add a vehicle onto the list because my sister came over for dinner and she and her family was staying at a hotel up the street. I found 3 of the BIGGEST roaches I have EVER seen in my life, on the floor next to the bed. 2 of the washing machines and dryers were out of order so if you had to do laundry you had to set timers and stalk the machines. I put money into the laundry soap dispenser that they have in the laundry room and it ate my money. Overall, I was not satisfied at all. I wanted to stay again next summer but this was the first impression that my significant other got and I was told that next year we will find another place. Even though their staff is helpful, the management needs a serious understanding that customer service goes beyond that. read more

We have stayed there twice with a big family group booking 4+ rooms at a time. Both times were awesome. We have stayed in two different room types and both of them were clean, large, comfortable and very well equipped. Across the street from the beach and walking distance to the downtown village and lots of shopping and restaurants. Highly recommend this resort for vacations and family get aways. When I first pulled up, I was surprised to see how pretty this place was. As I entered the lobby, even better, Starbucks coffee dispenser was greeting me. The host, sadly, I did not catch his name, was very friendly and courteous. There's an outdoor area with multiple fire pits, which are very nicely laid out. There's even a pool, which caught me by surprise. And there are bbq stations around the vicinity, which are accessible to guests. I stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. It was quaint, has a full kitchen and some utensils to use. The rooms are air conditioned which is nice. The rooms remind me a little of Mexico, like the nicer hotels. There are even handmade paintings in each room, which are so pretty, cannot stop looking at them. So this place is a really nice getaway, 1 minute off of the beach. Walking distance to anywhere really. It's in a perfect spot and you can do so many different activities in the area. There are many restaurants, bars, and shopping centers that are all walking distance. This place is worth a weekend getaway and is fairly priced based off where it is. I would recommend coming here before summer really kicks in and these places book up, especially when we live in a place where it is always sunny. read more

I love this hotel! If you're looking for a casual hotel near the beach with character and charm, you've found it! The hotel is a tropical-themed hotel near the beach with lush landscaping, a beautiful pool, firepits, and best of all, the grounds are lit up at night with different colors, giving it a real tropical feel. Absolutely adorable. On top of the location and charm, the rooms are nice and clean (a bit small, but that's the beach for you), and the staff is fantastic. We had a situation where my 90 year old grandmother was going to have to walk up the stairs because there is no elevator (note to anyone staying on the top floor...stairs only), they unfortunately couldn't move us, but they assisted us in every way they could, including offering us our money back, even though the room was non-refundable. The lobby offers freshly-ground Starbucks coffee in the morning, along with breakfast bars, fruit, yogurt, etc. The linens were clean and there is a kitchen in every room, which includes a full-size refrigerator. Super convenient if you're staying for a few days. Finally, the location can't be beat! In addition to the beach being across the street, Carlsbad Village is the next block up, which has restaurants, liquor stores, bars, etc. You can walk to pretty much anything, which is nice considering parking is never easy near the beach. My husband, our dog, and I stayed here for one night for a weekend getaway, and we loved it! The hotel is a little bit quirky and has a lot of character. The room was spotless with a luxurious jacuzzi and a shower with 3 shower heads (!) and we loved that we could open the top half of the door for the perfect combination of an open-aired room and privacy. Pros: Hotel is in a great location that is a short walking distance from restaurants, shops, and the beach (dogs are not allowed on the beaches here though). The front desk staff is very friendly and let us check in a few hours early. There's free coffee, donuts, and fruit on the weekends. Cute hotel grounds with lots of greenery and fire pits at night (instead of boring carpeted hallways with rows of doors on both sides). Free parking. Cons: Slightly expensive, but worth it for the non-corporate hotel feel. read more

The grounds are amazing, with lush foliage and tiki faces carved right into the palm trees. Several different common areas provide multiple options to relax at, with the main one providing fire pits and a fireplace. Across the street and down some stairs is the beach. We stayed 3 nights at the Moaki Suite and I would have to give the resort 3/5 stars. I am bummed, I really wanted to give the place 4/5... but I couldn't. I will give a break down. It's not a 5 star resort. It goes straight to a low 4 stars for me because there is no parking. We got the 10 person 3 bedroom suite and they gave us 1 parking spot. So, it took me ( the second car of people ) 45 minutes to find a parking spot. It was terrible. The staff had me drive around over and over looking.. then sent me to 2 different "lots" which were full, then told me to pay for parking somewhere ( that was full ) and finally they agreed to have an employee move a car for me. Such a joke. Ill break down the pros and cons to show why I goes down to 3 stars. Pros You feel like home. 3 Bed 2 bath place AC was amazing. The place stayed at 68 degrees. TVs in every room. The patio was nice with a hot tub Good location Free breakfast with coffee and bagels was great. You can get towels from the office for the beach Very roomy Kitchen was good 1 minute walk to the beach ( 63 stairs down ) Cons No Parking at all The room with the double beds, the double beds were HORRIBLE! So uncomfortable No hooks in the bathrooms to hang up towels or bathing suits. No bars to help you up in the bath or showers. Floors were slippery. No hose/water outside to hose off your feet. So you are trekking sand into the place always. Website shows you are just across from the beach, but when you get there, there are massive mansions blocking the beach. The gym was terrible. SMALL and humid and old and dated. The water in the sinks would come out scalding hot! It would constantly go from super hot to cold. VERY hard with kids. ' Wearing wristbands was very annoying. It kept scratching my kids with them. All and all, it's a 3.5-3.7 star for me. I would and will stay there again. I was happy with the stay and the place. I just cant give it 4 stars, mostly because of the parking issue. read more

We stayed the weekend of 11/7/2014 They don't even include hair conditioner in the bathroom. You get one large towel per person. You have to 'check out' a blow dryer. The windows and walls are thin and allow all of the outside noise to come in. Cleaning staff started spraying and scrubbing the patios/walkways outside of our room at 7:30 AM on a Saturday morning!!! Worst stay at a hotel, ever. Due to major car trouble, husband and I had to sleep in our car since there is no staff on site to help us access rooms after 3AM. Was told we could get our key held in a lockbox with a code emailed to me so we could access room after hours...but that never happened. When I contacted the manager, Barry, he was rude and cut me off at every point in the conversation. Needless to say, I have learned to spend my money at larger, more well-known hotels two blocks away where they have overnight staff and management who knows how to treat their customers. read more

They have boogie boards, beach chairs, surfboards, towels and much more that you can check out at the front desk for free! And, there is ample parking at the resort. I was recommended by a family who had stayed here the week before and loved the place. We ended coming here for my daughter's 16th birthday and it was wonderful! We all had a great time, including my moody teenager lol. The front desk staff and housekeepers were all very friendly. I LOVED the idea of the "dutch door" and every time a housekeeper walked by when I was hanging out of the door, they asked if I needed anything or always had a smile. The location to the beach was even closer than I thought and every time I took my dog out, I basically ended up at the beach. The pool was heated and I loved that they offered all the stuff you need for the beach including beach toys (fewer things to have to pack or worry about). The distance to the shops were just as close to the beach. My daughter never likes to walk around at home but she woke up every day and went to Starbucks, 7-11, the beach, and the shops; completely out and about which was great! I'm already looking to book my next trip but this time I'm hoping to get that amazing gem, the Tahitian room/suite. read more

Dressed up "motel"...calling this place a beach resort is a huge stretch. I was on vacation with my kids so I didn't make a big deal about things, I just rolled with the punches. I paid $399/Night for a total of 4 nights, $1,600 (ocean view). The room was dirty, the cleaning staff is not cleaning (see pictures). As soon as we got there we went to the local store and bought cleaning supplies, we cleaned the room before using. There is no hair dryer. One morning the front staff called to ask if another guest could go into our room to look for a cell phone they couldn'd find??? I was shocked. I went to the office to discuss their request and the lady with the accent couldn't even look me in the eye and didn't talk with me about her request, she started doing other things. They couldn't awnser how they thought the cell phone would get in our room. There is no parking, absolutely horrible parking situation, you will most likely need to walk quiet a distance to get to your room, it will be a hassle to run to your car to grab something. "Ocean View" room is not good... You want to open the windows and hear the waves crashing but you can't, there is a street and homes right in front of your ocean view, all you hear is cars passing by and people talking. $400/night view? I don't think so. The night we checked in around 5-6 PM. My kids went out to the car do grab some stuff and like kids they ran downstairs and where laughing... One of the guest screamed from his room Shut Up Assholes", I did notify the guy at the front desk immediately, "he would check it out". The swimming pool is tiny and beat up, the outside furniture is dirty and beat up. Believe me, you will be disappointed if you stay hear, don't do it. This might be an excellent choice for locals to get together with friends and family but if you are from out of town and are paying for luxury, you wont get it here. You'll remember my review if you decide to stay, it might even ruin your vacation. I kept my family busy outside of the motel, we only came back to sleep. Stay Away. read more

Definitely recommend Ocean Palms. When I made reservations I didn't realize I had clicked on the date of the 22nd. This trip was for our wedding anniversary and the 22nd would have defeat the purpose. The resort didn't have a standard for the 8th but between Bo and the resorts manager they made it happen with upgrading to a room that was available. Adding to my exceptional experience, from nearby restaurants and shops, this resort is literally steps away from the beach. Also, friendly staff, clean room and the fire pits in the patio is a plus. Just stayed here for a week with my family and we had the most amazing experience! This is the perfect resort for a family with kids AND adults. We stayed in a 2 bedroom and it slept 5 adults and 2 kids. We loved being able to step outside our door and enjoy coffee on the balcony overlooking an abundance of palm trees, a beautiful pool and an OCEAN VIew. The Resort is steps away from an amazing beach! Not only was the water warm when we were there but the beach itself is very kid friendly. This resort is alllll about the LOCATION! You can walk to and from everywhere. Restaurants, shopping, coffee shops, Starbucks, ice-cream all within just a short walking distance. The staff was friendly, helpful and very quick to respond to any inquiries. We had a few minor issues in our room at the beginning of our stay (remote controls not working and fan not working) but the staff was very quick to fix the issues. The resort grounds had plenty of BBQ's, and tables with chairs if you wanted to enjoy breakfast/lunch/ and dinner outside. We never had to wait for a BBQ or a table to sit at. Everything was CLEAN and in PRISTINE condition. It felt like we were in Hawaii! We loved sitting by the fire pits at night roasting smores and drinking wine. We will definitely be back for another family vacation here. It was all fun, lots of play, extremely relaxing, and very enjoyable. read more

Absolutely disappointed in customer service. Spilled coffee and housekeeping advised they would not change the sheets but did give me new sheets to change it myself. I was instructed to leave the sheets alone. Each day we had to hunt down housekeeping for new towels and exchange our old ones. None of this bothered us until we checked out and were charged for the coffee that set in and caused a stain. It was pretty good, last year. This year, not so much. Overpriced. Noisy stomping (underpaid, and sweet) maids, and men running loud machinery, every. single.morning. Impossible to sleep past 8am. Hot tub filled with scum, and BARELY BODY TEMPERATURE, suitable for a baby's bath. And they WON'T turn it up. And they've now locked the temp controls, behind a wall. Like sitting in a tub of pee-warm scum. Totally unusable, our entire 11-day stay. I was afraid to to use the pool, because the place was filled with unattended children peeing in the pool and lukewarm spa (rule about adult accompaniment, not enforced). The son, Barry trumpanzee Jr., now prohibits you from keeping your checked-out beach towel, overnight. Parades of ants in the kitchen and bathroom. Only one bag of free ice (no ice machine) allowed, per room, per day (wtf? And at $200/night!). And Barry also switched out the morning bagels (continental breakfast) for prepackaged (in cellophane) cardboard, tasteless, cheap, inedible bagels. Hope the only real good employee gets his own hotel, real soon. Promised a shower and tub, and only got a small 'cubicle' shower, in the b-room. Good location, but there are PLENTY of other, nicer hotels, very close by, for similar, or lower pricing, that actually have HOT, clean jacuzzi spas, ocean views, better staffing, better continental breakfasts, ice machines, and vended bottled water FOR LESS THAN $7/single use bottle (that's right. Ocean Pam's charges $7 for a single use bottle of water. The artesian water, from a company 3 blocks away, that charges $00.85 a GALLON, for the stuff. Pass right on by Ocean Palms. read more

Be careful of predatory ownership/management tactics. We reserved a room for 6 nights and paid a deposit only to be contacted two days later by the manager demanding full payment at a rate almost $2000 more than contracted rate two days prior or they would cancel the reservation. When we requested that the manager call us to discuss he refused. The employee who handled the transaction testified to the validity and we had documentation but we booked early to get better rates and now that rates are higher the hotel is trying to gauge us. read more

I stayed here with my family a little while back and had the BEST time. The staff was so friendly and helpful, (especially the front desk worker), her name was Jade and she was so kind! I loved the room, it was so clean and beautiful. Would definitely stay here again! :) read more
