I'm really disappointed and frustrated and frankly, annoyed and pissed with Dr. Ito and her staff. I've been seeing Dr. Ito since March of 2006- yes, that makes it over 10 years that she's been taking care of my eyes. Up until a few months ago, I can say she's been the best, the staff has always been so professional, proactive and smart. I called her back in June to let her know that the contact RX she wrote me back in Dec 2015 was not right because I can't see anything close up, but since I didn't report it right away, I was told I'd have to come in and PAY AGAIN to have my eyes checked siting that my RX had changed. I explained the timeline of events which made me firmly believe that it was in fact a bad RX but was told I could go get my eyes checked somewhere else. I'm definitely not the type of customer who is always trying to get anything for free, but rather a completely fair and loyal customer who after 10 years expected a tiny bit of professional courtesy but was not. Here is what happened. -Dec 2015 got eyes checked with contact and glasses RX on old insurance. Ordered only enough contacts that my insurance would cover knowing I'd have new insurance in Jan 2016. -Sometime early in 2016 I call and give them my new insurance and order more contacts to get this out of the way for the year- just whatever my insurance covered. I had 3 months of contacts leftover from my old RX so I was intermittently wearing those and my old glasses. I had no need to open my new contacts. -Sometime in late May/early June (I think) I went to my favorite Korean glasses shop and bought new glasses with my new RX. They were so awesome I wore them for 2 weeks straight. They were perfect. I could comfortably see ever leaf outside my window as well as every tiny font that came through my computer screen clearly. I also at around this point opened up my new contacts as I was out of the old ones. I wore them a few times and realized I could not see anything close up. It makes work impossible as I am constantly reviewing documents, spreadsheets, lots of numbers and watching down cuts all day long. I call Dr. Ito and explain that the contact rx is bad and am immediately told my rx had changed and that my option was that I could come in and pay to get my eyes re-checked, or I could get my eyes checked elsewhere and I could exchange my contacts they were holding for me. Some options! Let me interject here that I moved away from the westside 4 years ago, so for the past 4 years I've been schlepping down to Santa Monica to see this lady. Getting there is no longer convenient at all. So, I take a month and mull over how much of a point I want to make and either take my business elsewhere or go back. Only because this is less work for me (and since I'd have to make a trip back there to return the unopened contact boxes that are shit) I'm heading there next Thursday to PAY AGAIN for what I believe is BAD RX to begin with and to exchange my contacts. I'm not happy about this at all. Its just such a greedy move to have me pay again for her to check her mistake. I'm not asking to have the entire army of tests done again as she does have state of the art machinery. It's just so greedy! After my next final appointment I'll be completely done with her. I'm sure someone else will gladly take my business. OH! I almost forgot to mention. Last week I got a bill from her office that I had seen for the FIRST TIME that was marked 30 days past due. MORE SNEAKINESS. I'm a creature of loyalty and habit and I can state with FACT that I do the same thing every year and I pay everything UP FRONT. Past due??? The customer service is not what it used to be. So disappointing. Sneaky and so freaking GREEDY. I would give her ZERO stars for this experience but I'm giving her 1 for the 10 years of good service before she started treating me like a third class citizen. 8/3/16 UPDATE I went to see Dr. Ito one last time to figure out my contact situation last week and I wanted to think about what I was going to say in my update. I maintain that I was frustrated, annoyed and pissed at how my last experience went down, but this time around I got the full service I have enjoyed since my first visit. Dr. Ito even waived some of the fees, which I do appreciate, but I hate the idea that I had to kick up a fuss about how frustrating it was for this to happen. In any case, I also maintain that she and her staff are very professional - this time around Dr. Ito explained exactly what was going on with my prescription and was very kind and patient about all the questions I had, and was clearer on the issue of my need for reading glasses. I guess I fall into the small percentage of people whose prescriptions/need for a different prescription change within months of getting their eyes checked. Lucky me. So, I'll chalk this up to an anomolous encounter and move on. read more

I've been coming to this physical spot since 2006. The staff is exceptional, patient, and knowledgeable. They remember specific details about me, and my family; which I think adds that extra special touch. Dr. Sarah Ito is wonderful. And, offers me additional insight if something seems to be a bit different from my previous exams. Antwanett, Karen and Asjah are a joy to be around. I can be super picky at times trying to figure out the perfect frames for my face and mood. They set the right expectations on when I can receive my glasses and how much they will cost. I must also add that they always have a nice variety of high-end glasses and sunglasses to choose from. Note: it typically takes about 7-10 business days to receive your glasses - especially if they are designer, and your lens requires extra TLC by the manufacturer. Be patient. The staff wants the best for you. And, when your glasses arrive, they will ensure they are the true fit. Lastly, the offices are super clean and they use some of the best state-of-the-art optometric equipment. Love love love this place. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Ito's for about 10 years and was a patient of the previous optometrist who owned Visionworks Optometry. I've seen the office go from a nice, okay office(prior doctor) to an outstanding ***** (5 star) office. The office was remodeled and updated; it is always clean. Dr. Ito and her staff are excellent -thorough, knowledgable and helpful. The staff is knowledgable about my insurance and I do not have to submit anything - I have VSP. They have the latest technology that evaluates my/your eyes. Every time I go, there is a new piece of equipment.. My family history includes glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, so my eye health gets me very anxious; I'm always worried I will develop a problem. I always leave Dr. Ito's office feeling confident that I have been thoroughly evaluated and understand exactly how my eyes are changing. She referred me to my LASIK eye surgeon 9 years ago, which was also an outstanding experience. She is my 8 year old son's optometrist and is excellent with children as well. Dr. Ito takes the time to explain her examination and results in a way I always understand. She is very patient, kind and accessible. Her office runs smoothly - I get an automated reminder by phone that I'm due for an exam, I make an appointment with a person, I get a reminder call the night before and you can opt for future contacts by email, phone or text. They are always on time and I never feel rushed. I can always get a convenient appointment time. They have an excellent choice of frames and contact lenses- the staff is always helpful when I need to pick new frames. Last week, I had to pick 2 new frames, for my first time bifocals and polarized prescription sunglasses. The only negative (and I hate that there is one) is the new glaucoma tester. It has a very small, fine stick/thing that has to touch your eyeball to test pressure - no more puff of air machine. I couldn't do it (and other lady after me couldn't either). So I was not happy that something I really needed made me too uncomfortable to do. So Dr. Ito had to do an alternate examination. Both her and her assistant were very accommodating about it and didn't make me feel negative about the modification. I cannot recommend highly enough Dr. Ito at Visionworks Optometry. (Note, make sure in the summer that you will be seeing Dr. Ito and not a fill in when she goes on her vacation). It was only one time, but the substitute person was so awful I had to complain and Dr. Ito redid the exam free of charge. I'm sure that person won't be back, but make sure you see Dr. Ito read more

Found this optometrist on Yelp, as it's close to my girlfriend's apartment and rated well. I went in just to check out the glasses selection, and after finding a pair I liked, I made an appointment. Dr. Ito is excellent, so knowledgeable and kind and took the time to actually conduct a thorough examination. The staff is great as well, very nice and didn't unnecessarily upsell me on anything. They also take my insurance, Davis Vision, so that's nice too. Very highly recommended. read more

The assistants are very nice and were helpful when looking at glasses frames and going over my insurance coverage. the only other time i'd ever been to an optometrist was about a decade and a half ago, when i got something in my eye and had to go home with an eyepatch (ahoy matey!), so i wasn't sure what to expect. found dr ito and her staff to be great. everyone was super friendly and the atmosphere was very calm and comfortable. the woman at the front desk (linda i think) even fixed a loose screw in the suglasses i'd walked in with while i was getting my eye exam. highly recommend this place - especially for locals. having a shared parking lot with a grocery store makes it extra-convenient. read more

I found this place through my insurance company as my Optometrist and Contacts specialist of 10+ years told me they no longer accept my insurance. I was out of contacts, had an expired prescription and was essentially in a bind. I called, confirmed they still accepted my insurance and within 24 hours, I had an appt. Can you say accommodating? I live/work in the Santa Monica area and my old doctor was in Beverly Hills. This was 3-4 miles away. I checked in, was seen at the set appointment time and had all my tests and had them all explained to me what would happen, what the test did. I then waited a whopping 1-2 minutes to see the doctor. She then explained the results of my tests to me, showed me the health of my eyes and explained it all in everyday terms. No fancy words, no medical terms - just plain and simple. I then ordered my contacts which arrived 2 days later. My old doctor would be able to get me in maybe a month out if I was lucky. I'd have to wait at least 30 minutes (beyond my appt time), made me "sample" a pair for a week, call if I liked them, then I'd have to schlep back out to Beverly Hills, pay to park just to pick up a scrip, go to Costco, fight parking, wait in line to order them, wait 7-10 days, go back to Costco, fight parking, wait in line again. WIth Visionworks, I saved days and days and dollars and dollars worth of gas, traffic, aggravation, costs, inconveniences. Where have they been my whole life? They were so friendly, listened if I said "this still doesn't look clear enough", explained everything to me from checking in to checking out. Amazing. I'm in love! read more

This is my second year going to Visionworks. I called today and was lucky to get a same day appointment. The girl who took the appointment was really helpful and polite. They place is very unassuming from the outside because it's in a shopping center. However, their equipment and technology is top of the line. They even have a glaucoma test that no longer puffs in your eye. I hate the puff! The optician (I think her name was Karen) was knowledgeable and professional and Dr. Ito is thorough and excellent. It was such a pleasant and quick experience that it didn't even feel like a doctors appointment. I will definitely be back for an exam and contacts next year. read more

I have been going to this location for 27 years even before Dr. Ito took over this place. I think the quality of care is even better since Dr. Ito took over. She has all of the up to date equipment and she explains everything she is doing and she is so knowledeable about the eyes. I recently had my yearly eye exam and there seemed to be a problem with my prescription The doctor saw me and determined there was in fact an adjustment that should have been made in the lab so she sent my glasses back to the lab to have them re-made. I was very pleased with my experience. I have recommended others to her and they have been pleased also. I have worked mostly with Antwanet and she is extremely knowledgeable and professional. Dr. Ito only agreed to provide me a refund (for blurry Rx glasses) if I 'agreed to write us a positive review on Yelp and Citysearch'. I couldn't believe my ears when Dr. Ito said this - I mean she was actually bargaining for a positive Yelp review in exchange for doing what Visionworks Optometry was legally obligated to do any way: PROVIDE A REFUND FOR A PAIR OF PRESCRIPTION GLASSES THAT CAUSE BLURRY VISION. Visionworks fitted me for Rx lenses on a wrap frame (probably not advisable based on conversations with other optometrists) even though I have an astigmatism. The vision was completely blurry and unacceptable. I couldn't see out of the glasses that Visionworks charged me roughly $400 for - and that was AFTER my insurance discount! Doctor Ito is overpriced and unprofessional. Based on my personal experience, I can only imagine what Dr. Ito has done to get any positive reviews on this site. I'm guessing that some or most of positive reviews were actually written BY her. When I confronted her about her fraudulent bargain & refusal to provide a refund for glasses which result in blurry vision, she denied that she bargained for 'a positive review on Yelp and Citysearch.' What a liar. I had been a regular customer there for roughly one year prior to this incident. Trust me there are much more competent Doctors on the Westside that charge 1/2 the price and stand behind their products. Remember that Dr. Ito was legally required to give me a refund for glasses that caused blurry vision - but Dr. Ito was only willing to do what she was legally obligated to do in exchange for 'a positive review on Yelp and Citysearch.' What a fraud. IF you do decide to do business at Visionworks, I would encourage you to shop with a credit card (not cash) so that you have some consumer protection through your credit card company in the event of a dispute. The rest of the staff is really nice but Dr. Ito is incompetent and dishonest in my opinion & based on my experience. read more

I just want to start off by saying I have been coming here for years to get contacts and my glasses. Today I had an emergency because my glasses broke and I could not use them at all and I have no back up pair or contacts so I went Ocean Park for help and begged for even a sample pack of contact lenses and they just said because my contacts were expired they couldn't help me I when said I'll pay for an exam and they said we can't help you we don't carry contacts because of covid and it would take 3 weeks for a pair of glasses I left in shock that they didn't even try to help me. I called around to see who could help me and Luckily a found a person willing to help who couldn't believe how Ocean Park treated me after doing business for so many years and have me a sample that best fit my needs and ordered me new contacts in a matter of minutes squeezing me in after their last appointment something I thought ocean park would do for me. Overall I had a good experience. I went in for a low-level eye infection that I have had for a few weeks (I didn't know it was an infection), and Dr. Ito was really great at explaining to me what was wrong, and getting me medication and drops right away. My eyes already feel better! I thought the office was clean and everyone was very helpful. I guess the only "cons" are: 1. the waiting area is right in the middle of the eye glass consultation area, and it is very crowded and loud when there are consultation going on at every station. 2. while the on-line appointment procedure is very quick and easy, if you are a first-time visitor, this does not allow for them to find out about your insurance benefits ahead of time. I had a 20-minute confusion when I first checked in about whether my insurance was going to cover this. We eventually figured out that my vision insurance would not cover it, but my primary health insurance would (since it was an infection). I couldn't see the doctor until they sorted this out, and it was a little stressful while I waited and wondered if I was going to be allowed to see her. I think you better just call and make an appointment the old-fashioned way the first time, and figure out beforehand if your insurance is going to cover you. Also, even after we found out that my insurance would cover me, the lady at the desk told me that sometimes insurance just doesn't pay and I would still have to pay! That didn't make me feel too confident in their billing procedure (I have never had my insurance not pay after they said they would). Anyway, I guess I will have to wait and see what happens with that... Overall a good experience once I got to see Dr. Ito. read more

Their service is great and friendly. However, my qualm is I feel like they're constantly up-selling me. I've walked out of there at least twice spending way more than I was expecting to, simply because they didn't tell me something would cost more. For example, I called to set up a contact lens appointment, and I said that. I come in and they ask "do you wear glasses?" I say "yes." Next thing I know, I am charged an extra $100 or so for a glasses exam. All I wanted when I came in was my free contact lens exam for the year. They need to explain if what they're doing is going to cost more than the insurance covers. My last time in, I was very specific (annoyingly specific) because I didn't want anymore surprise fees. read more

This practice has incredibly poor communication and a low skill level. I came here for my yearly checkup a few months back and needed new contacts and glasses. After spending the time with the doctor and waiting the 2-3 weeks for my glasses and contacts to arrive, both showed up incorrect and had to be remade. I then had to have a second appointment with the doctor to check the prescription which took significantly longer than it should have, roughly two hours between waiting for the doctor and for the staff to communicate with each other. Weird, my prescription had to be "modified". Finally after all that, things were corrected. Within a couple months of wearing my new contacts, I came across one that was defective. When I called the office to get a replacement lens, I was told they would get back to me. Of course, no one did so when I followed up, I learned that the replacement had in fact been ordered and would be in within 2-3 weeks. When I called roughly 2 weeks later to check on the lens, I received a return voicemail letting me know the lens would be there that day to pick up. When I went in the next day to pick it up, it was nowhere to be found. I then learned that the lens received was in fact incorrect and had been sent back and it would be an additional 2-3 weeks. Seriously? No one thought that maybe they should have notified me of this so I didn't make a special trip to the office? I'm now at roughly 5 office visits for a situation that should take no more than 2. This is a poorly ran practice - on the staff and doctor level. When it comes to health, professionalism is a must. Neither the doctor or staff have earned my trust that any of them know what they are doing. Take your business elsewhere. read more

The entire staff is welcoming and very nice. Dr. Ito really takes the time to explain to you everything that is going on with your eyes. She's very attentive, kind, and patient. At other optometrist offices I have felt pressured to purchase expensive items but I came back to Visionworks because they do not pressure their patients. I arrived 10 minutes late to my appointment but was still seen within 5 minutes of checking in and updating my records. Dr. Ito as usual takes time to answer questions and give recommendations.
