The price here is an amazing value for what we thought was a really good Japanese meal. The sashimi Deluxe was a work of art, and really good variety of sushi. The fried rice that came with the chicken katsu don was great, smokey and flavorful from the hibachi. The unagi don comes in a nice wooden box with a lot of fish and tamago. The chicken katsu was even better than the typical katsu found at Japanese restaurants. Overall I would highly recommend Ocean Samurai, it was a great value and really great food. read more

I came by on a weekday for lunch and got to take advantage of the lunch specials. I ended up getting the Unagi Don, which consists of eel, some veggies, and a sauce, over rice. I've always been a big fan of eel based dishes, and this one was not the best one I've had. It still tasted good, but it didn't pack as much of a punch as some of the other similar dishes I've had. I'm not one to leave a one Star review but here I am. We had four in our party. One person ordered hibachi that came to the table at room temperature as if it had been sitting for a while. Not to mention the white rice was crunchy (the kind when in the rice cooker too long). Now the udon was good but our son has been having "stomach" issues within an hour of eating it. The sushi was ok but not even in my top 10 of places I'd come back too. Maybe it was a short in staff (that was the first impression) why service was lacking. I would not go out of my way to come back here. It's a shame because we don't have many choices for sushi around Virginia Tech. Parking in front very convenient. Menu had some great options from hibachi, sushi to various Asian meals. I started with a small seaweed salad. Interesting concept adding iceberg lettuce as a foundation for this salad. Seaweed was fresh and I could have done without the iceberg. The tempura meal was hefty. Dropped in here for a quick dinner. The place was busy, but we were seated right away. Unfortunately, we sat for quite a while before we flagged down a server. Ordered a sushi roll for appetizer and then entrees. I had the yakisoba bowl. Everything came out at once, and they forgot the soup and salads. Decent--but only decent--sushi for lunch. I ate here per its good reviews and because I was headed to the running store in the same shopping center anyway. The waitress was efficient and nice and the food came out quickly but one roll I requested was a smoked salmon roll--very standard, yeah?--but what I got instead was some sort of broiled or otherwise flash-cooked salmon roll, and warm. Not at all what I wanted. And smoked salmon is not an uncommon nor exotic sushi at all. The yellowtail roll I also ordered however was very good I will say. The atmosphere was . . . odd. The shape of the dining room is strange, the chairs used at the sushi bar where I sat were too low for the sushi bar (even for me at 6'2") and a blender ran constantly and very loudly back in the kitchen which became annoying after a while. Yes, I know that of course kitchens need to prepare food but this device was horribly loud and never seemed to cease operation. After that, things start to get a like murky... For an appetizer, I shared crab rangoons. They didn't seem to have enough cream cheese in them... For dinner, I ordered three rolls - the Philadelphia roll, the unagi (eel) roll, and The Big Easy (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallions, wasabi, and flying fish roe). The unagi roll was the best. It was simple, no frills. The Big Easy was very bland. I couldn't tell the difference in any of the fish flavors, and the wasabi that was incorporated in the roll really overpowered everything. Lastly, the Philadelphia roll was abysmal. The smoked salmon was not fresh, at all. I feel like they used the smoked salmon that you would eat a lox bagel with... except it was very stale and rubbery. It was also extremely salty. Apart from dinner, the service was friendly, but very slow. Usually, I don't mind being patient and waiting, but we waited over an hour to have just the appetizers come around. I tried some of my friend's vegetable tempora, so that was good. I'm not from the area, but even if I were, I don't think I would come back. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I was pretty disappointed that night. I'm not a big sushi expert, but I felt like Kroger sushi would've sufficed. read more

OMG we are in heaven!! We have found a true Sushi restaurant that truly deserves some commentary! For context we ordered take out and ate in our truck since we were with our dogs We ordered a Lovers Boat & Jalapeño (Yellowtail) Hamachi appetizer, which also came with a salad and soup. We switched out the Green Dragon roll with the Big Easy Roll since we were not eel fans. Let me tell you, this was good! So much so we have rated it one of the top 10 Sushi restaurants we have ever been too. With that said, we have eaten in Tokyo at Sushi restaurants that are some of the best in the world! The cut of the sushi was thick and meaty, the Tuna was dark and the cut was smooth. The rolls were not think on the rice side so you could actually taste the fish! Plus the Nigiri (Sushi) wasn't a huge rice ball, but rather a nice cut of fish on a small pad of rice, it was almost like thin sashimi and well balanced. The Jalapeño (Yellowtail) Hamachi appetizer had a nice thick Yellowtail with knife marks across on a cucumber bed. This makes my mouth water writing this because it was the "Best" version of this appetizer I have ever had and we get it EVERYWHERE we go! The Hokie Roll was delicious! A wonderful texture and favors, and a roll that you can still tasted the meat, perfectly balanced! The Big Easy Roll was simple but very tasteful with a mixture of meats. My wife and I ate most of the entire boat without soy, and we are soy fans but it was just simply that good! The sushi here was not good. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly, but the sushi was honestly a big disappointment. For the sushi deluxe, you get 6 "chefs choice" nigiri along with 6 slice tuna roll with 4 pieces of California roll and if you want to sub the California roll for something else it incurs an extra charge. The quality of the sushi and flavor was just not there. The black dragon roll wasn't terrible but the tempura had a little bit too much batter and the eel did not have much flavor to it. The black dragon roll had to be drowned in wasabi with eel and soy sauce to get any kind of flavor. The spicy tuna roll was a scary color, and was very bland. The volcano roll was too saucy and not enough salmon. Overall the sushi here was very bland. The miso soup that was included with the sushi deluxe was good but the salad that came with it wasn't the best as I felt the dressing lacked as much of a ginger flavor as I am used to. About a year later I am updating my review. I am not sure if ownership changed? The food is not the same as it used to be and is also more expensive. The hibachi used to have a great soy sauce on it, but now is completely flavorless and the chicken is over cooked. Even the rolls have gone down in quality. Really sad to see :/ Solid little Japanese/sushi place. I have gone a few times now, and ordered deleivery (thru third party app) and each time it has been good. Sushi is tasty and fresh, decent prices. My favorite is the unagi (eel) roll. Hibachi is also really good, and the soy sauce the hibachi is cooked in gives it a great flavor. Presentation of plates was nice! Service was also good. Interior is clean, no frills, but pretty lackluster. (Still wishing for a higher end/trendy sushi bar in Blacksburg). Cocktails were .... The rainbow roll is a must! Everything we have had here has been amazing. Today was the first time we went inside to eat. Our waitress was attentive and sweet, and checked in on us multiple times. Good service from our waitress... horrible food and even worse kitchen staff... kitchen staff yelled at our server after we sent back a dish. We felt extremely unsafe and uncomfortable. We were famished and were looking for a good Japanese meal. What we received started out so-so and turned dramatically worse after the main dishes came out--problem is that they use cheap, low quality ingredients. Yellowtail appetizer was not very fresh... fish was starting to give off a fishy smell and had that "sitting in the fridge too long" look. Udon soup broth was made with canned or boxed beef broth--ultra salty. Beef was stew quality, tough beef--not the steak quality beef found in good Japanese (or Vietnamese pho) restaurants. The biggest problem was that my wife couldn't eat beef or any red meat, so she ordered the chicken udon soup. What came out was cooked in a canned beef broth that gave her the gag reflex. The server was kind enough to take it back to replace with a stir fried (instead of soup version) chicken Udon, but she came back a minute later saying the kitten asked if it was ok if they used "ox oil" in her replacement dish... our spider sense should have come up at tgat point, but we e plant wife couldn't eat any type of beef or any meat related to cows... not oxen despite the fact that the only oxen oil used in production was as a lubricant for firearms. We kindly declined. Half a minute later, the kitchen staff yelled loudly at our server in the back... at tgat point, we couldn't trust what was going to be brought out. I couldn't trust my wife's health or safety, so my son and I finished our food and my wife fi she'd off the appetizers tgat had come out earlier. We strongly suspected if we had agreed to the use of "Ox oil," the kitchen would have just refried the udon and chicken from the beef broth soup they sent to us at first and claimed the beefy smell was from the ox oil. To make matters worse, the sushi cooks behind the bar started glaring at my wife after the loud yelling from the kitchen. We felt unsafe and definitely uncomfortable after the yelling in the back and the glare, especially from one of the sushi cooks behind the counter. Definitely be wary if you come in and give any hint of dissatisfaction with the kitchen.... There are better options in the area. read more

I hate to right this review but this the second time I've been extremely disappointed with this place. I really love the sushi, which is why I'm giving 2 stars. It really is amazing, I come all the time but the service has just been terrible. I ordered something to-go a couple weeks ago and when I got home i realized part of my order was missing, I had to drive back 15 minutes to get the other half of my order. They didn't offer any sort of compensation or anything to make me feel better for having to drive back and forth. I thought it was a slip up, it happens. However TODAY, I ordered to-go again, they gave me a 30 minute wait, I left, came back 30 minutes later, I am writing this review after being in the facility an additional HOUR and I still have not received my food. 1 hour and 30 minutes and I STILL don't have my food.
