I'm in town visiting a childhood friend and we came here for dinner. As we were walking to the Tavern, I noticed a cute little house that didn't match the other architectural designs of the other establishments in the area (brick and "modern" looking buildings). I was caught off guard when my friend walked up the stairs to the house because from initial appearance, I wouldn't have thought this was the restaurant! Upon walking in, the host greeted us and told us his name was Dan and that he was the owner of the restaurant! It was really cool to see that the owner is truly passionate about his restaurant and will show up to put in the work, even during the later hours. In terms of the food, I went with the Hungry Hokie which was a mashed potato bowl with with bits of meatloaf and chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese. It also came with a biscuit or cornbread, I opted in with the cornbread. The food was absolutely hearty and had pretty good flavor! The one wish that I had was that it came in a bigger portion as it didn't fully fill me up. If I was in town again, I'd definitely consider going back to try the other items on the menu! read more

Phenomenal all around. Historic building renovated very nicely and historic art on the walls give it a unique southern feel. We were in Blacksburg on a Wednesday during the summer so there weren't very many people around. We decided to try the Blacksburg Tavern for a few drinks and some appetizers. We were met at the door by the owner (Dan) who escorted us to the bar. It has a great vibe. Because it wasn't very crowded, we were able to talk with the owner, learning about his background and the history of the property. Very interesting. In addition to a few drinks, we had the ham biscuits and the brisket biscuits. They were great and really hit the spot. We are looking forward to going to the Blacksburg Tavern next time we are in town, this time for dinner. read more

You actually get to eat in the oldest house in Blacksburg from the late 1800s. All the walls have been painted by hand (murals) depicting that era. The service is friendly and attentive. We ordered a couple of cocktails that were good but were light. The food is simple but good. Stopped in during a visit to VT. Service was friendly and attentive. The uniqueness of dining in an old house made it more interesting than just your average restaurant. Not to mention the hand painted walls - made it extra special. The food was very tasty and clearly homemade. The fried chicken was excellent - crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Enjoyed a lovely lunch on Mother's Day. We were greeted by Dan who is also the owner. He was very friendly and engaging and we were quickly led to our table. This restaurant is so charming. Beautiful murals painted on various walls and it is housed in an old house standing since 1892. They have options to either order your own entrees or order family style. We opted to each choose our own entrees. Everything we had was delicious. The biscuits and cornbread served with butter and Apple butter are so good. It feels like you are a guest in someone's home and they are preparing all the home style favorites. Service was friendly and efficient. I did ask if they served mimosas and was told no but we have wine by the server. I did not order a drink which led my husband to not order a beer. I thought they had a full bar so that was the only let down of the day. If you're a bourbon lover they have a lot of bourbon cocktail options. I've been trying to go here for a long while, and I remember certain times I have tried, the wait times were a bit too long. However I was able to stop by last time I dropped off my sibling at VT. We got the fried chicken meal. I got the cornbread and my husband got the biscuit. That biscuit was so incredible. One of the best I've had in a while. The chicken was great and I was blown away by some of the "less popular" side dishes such as the succotash and green beans. Both were so tasty. The Mac and cheese was pretty good too. Finished off the meal with peach cobbler and ice cream which was not too sweet and a great way to finish the meal. The owner is very sweet and even came and talked to us. Eating here was one of the experiences I've ever had! I felt like I was sent back to 1850 when I walked in- old southern tunes were playing, everything was made of wood, and it just felt rustic. I came on a Sunday for lunch and it was very quiet. Service was quick and efficient and I ended up going with the brisket burger with apples. The food was great, with the exception being the cole slaw which I found too sweet. The brisket was some of the best I ever had though. My only criticism is that the menu is very small so review it before you go. What a way to spend a lovely afternoon. Sitting o n the front porch of this historical house that was converted into a Tavern. We were able to have our dog with us which is always a plus when traveling thru a town. Dan the owner came out to us and gave us our menus while he introduced himself. The food was absolutely delicious. The biscuits, corn bread, brisket, fried chicken, vegetables, all fabulous. Two down sides - it took a very long time to get our food, even though the restaurant did not seem very crowded, and no one warned us or checked in with us even when we'd ordered approximately 45 minutes before. Second, there are very limited options for those who don't eat meat. I think selections from the vegetable side dishes and vegetable soup may have been the only options. Now for the food! We both ordered the fried chicken plate; I got it with cornbread and my boyfriend got it with a biscuit. Highly recommend so you can try both because WOW, for being complimentary they were one of the highlights of the meal! It also comes with apple butter to spread on - fresh and warm and comforting, my dream. The fried chicken was delicious. It had a cornmeal batter coating and had plenty of flavor (skin was too salty to eat on its own, but perfect with the chicken and the sides). Great mac and cheese as well as mashed potatoes! However, I wouldn't recommend the coleslaw as it was very watery and not my favorite that I've had. Maybe just a slip up that day... Next time I come, I'd like to try one of their desserts too. My husband and I really enjoyed dining here. We were immediately greeted by Dan who was super friendly and engaging. The Blacksburg Tavern has a good amount of outdoor seating set up on their porch and patio which made dining during Covid-19 more comfortable. The service was great and the menu prices are super reasonable. My husband ordered the flight of bourbon and he really enjoyed the tasting. He also had the fried chicken which he described as very very good! I had a giant bowl of pinto beans with some delicious corn bread. We enjoyed people watching from our porch high top table. Next cocktails very inexpensive I mean a Ginny for 5$ and an ol fashion for under 9$ come on man why is not more people lining up for those prices. You can get a double markers mark for 14$. Last time I got a double anything was 20$ and I would say and avg ol fashion at 13$. Next the biscuits are perfect they were not hard they were flaky and moist. We don't eat much fried food but the fried chicken was worth the try. Also the service was spot on and helpful, with the owner as friendly as can be. I was in town recently with some friends who are also alumni. We graduated before this place opened but after a long day of hiking, we wanted to treat ourselves to some delicious, homestyle cooking. We found the Blacksburg Tavern online and it met our expectations. Located right on main st, we found parking easily as they have a lot. We were greeted by the manager and owner who was very friendly. The interior is lovely, very quaint and felt home-y. It was nice to read the background of the restaurant on the menu as well. We did family style and got fried chicken and brisket with succotash, pimento Mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. Everything was absolutely amazing. This was probably the best fried chicken I'd ever had. They give you plenty as well. The brisket was also great, very tender. I loved the sides, especially the potatoes. They also give you an option of corn bread or biscuits - my only complaint truly was that there wasn't more than one piece each as both were so good! We had apple butter on the side as well and this was amazing on a biscuit. For dessert, we opted to share a slice of the pie of the day which was blueberry. Not exaggerating but this was the best pie I've ever had in my life. It was so fresh, perfectly baked, and not overly sweet. I wish I got my own slice instead of sharing. If the restaurant sold these pies whole, they'd also make a killing. We left full and delighted as the service was quick and great. I'm still dreaming of the pie.
