Enjoyed my time here. Glass is exactly 3 hours long but goes by fast. Valerie, owner and instructor was very helpful, nice, and easy to talk to. Arrived 10 mins early and she was willing to start my session. Class is only 4 people total at a time. MUST call far in advance for BSG - Beginning Stained Glass class. Val explained step by step and showed demonstration when needed. A bit pricey but lots of tools needed. For 2 people it was $170, so $85 pp. I would be interested to take ASG = Advanced Stained Glass class in a future date. Bring something to drink, snacks and dress comfortable. I do wish there were more templates to choose from and more glass colors to choose from. Parking lot isn't an issue. read more

Well mission accomplished. First and foremost, Val is an amazing and fun instructor. Anything art related really intimidates me but she was very encouraging and patient with me. Came here today with my partner to take the beginner stained glass class. We chose our design from a set of 6 options and we both decided on the mushroom. I am so happy we did this because not only was it informative and fun but I came away with something I genuinely love. Each step of the way we were supported and given opportunities to make creative decisions. The owner and teacher was friendly, gave good feedback, and let us ask her a million questions. So I called another day and spoke to the owner about when a good time to go in would be and I let her know I would go in Tuesday morning. So I showed up Tuesday and the lights were off and the door was locked. After calling the store and waiting outside for an hour and a half, I left. I was disappointed because I really wanted to support a local glass business instead of Hobby Lobby but whenever I try to go it's closed. I don't think they should post any business hours if they are not actually open during that time. It should instead say "by appointment only", but be careful because even if you agree on a time and day it might still be closed. read more

This was so much fun!! I am so happy that my friend and I got a Groupon for this :) so this had to be booked well in advance. I think I booked it about two months in advance? This is incredibly popular, but now I can see why. My friend and I got there at 4pm. Val welcomed us in & got us checked in. Then she did her magic with walking us through the entire procedure! Along the way, she was sweet & patient with us. She showed us one thing at a time, & she gave us little tips along the way. The whole thing really was therapeutic, especially with the Christmas music playing lightly in the back. After about 2.5 hours, we finished our fish, & they came out beautifully! Often times, Groupon offers great deals for people to be a bit more creative in life. Ocean Stained Glass has had promotions through Groupon in the past and I was delighted to see that one was currently available! Let me be honest, I did not know what I was going to be doing today. Initially, I thought that we would be mixing colors into a pattern to create a brightly designed glass object to display in the home. This was not the case! When I arrived at the studio, I was greeted by Val who gave me a quick tour of the place. I quickly noticed that she was well-organized! You won't have any trouble locating tools or supplies to complete your project. All glass pieces of various shapes and sizes are grouped together by color in small storage containers. She also has some binders on display so that you can select a pattern that you'd like to follow when creating your masterpiece. As you peer around the studio, you'll be inspired to see other students' work on display because they had unique interpretations of the same pattern but in different colors. Prior to getting to work, Val showed me some glass mosaic projects that were created by other students. At this point, I had a clear idea as to what I'd be doing today. I was given a 5 X 7 piece of glass in which Val had taped a copy of the pattern that I had selected to the bottom of it. The glass is transparent so you won't have any trouble seeing where you'll need to place and glue each piece of stained glass. I opted for a pattern in the shape of a cat because I wanted to design a project that would remind me of my cat that passed away earlier this year. I was told that I should anticipate spending between three and four hours in the studio. The entire process is time consuming because you tend to become meticulous as you work. You can select various pieces of stained glass to work with but you'll have to use the mosaic glass cutter to cut the pieces into various shapes and sizes. You end up placing small pieces of stained glass onto the 5 X 7 transparent glass to fit within the pattern. As it begins to take shape, you'll glue all of the pieces onto the transparent 5 X 7 glass to lock in your pattern. Once you have finished this process, you have to add a border to your pattern to make it stand out. This is a time-consuming process due to the intricate nature of the patterns and the size and shape of each piece of glass. Next week, I will return to finish my project! I will be adding grout into the small crevasses between the pieces of stained glass. I'm quite excited to see what the final project will look like because I don't have an artistic bone in my body. This was a new experience for me and it was a great way to relax and be creative on a sunny afternoon! read more

Had THE best time!! This was such a fun and interactive class! My friend got us classes to do the beginners mosaic glass class (2 parts: first part roughly 3-4 hours, second part, different day 2 hours), and I can't begin to tell you how much we learned about this type of art class! We first had to pick any type of design we wanted, and then we got to BREAK the glass into tiny pieces (totally would be a good class to put out your rage into). We formed amazing little pictures with help from Val, who was AWESOME! She made us feel so comfortable and was so patient with us while we were learning this new art work. Any type of creativity level will be good cause in the end, even if you think you did a horrible job, it turns out wonderful! As stated, the class is broken down into two parts, the first part, you would break the glass and then glue it to the stationary object. Then after a week, you would need to come back to fill it with grout. Then a couple days after you're down with that, you cover it with a grout sealant (which she lets you take home), and then fini, you have your master piece! I highly recommend this place!! It's small and intimate and perfect for you and a friend to take part in! The only downside to it is that the classes fill up really quick!! I got our Groupon in March (for my birthday), and I couldn't book a class til Aug! So plan accordingly! Will totally be back to try out the other classes! read more

This is such a great place! Val is super talented and creates custom pieces of art for her customers. I went in for a mosaic class and had such a great time. I drove over an hour to get there and it's definitely worth the trip. It's the first time I created a mosaic and had a wonderful time learning a new skill. Val helps get you set up and comfortable with the process and she periodically checks in to see how you are doing. If you don't need help, she's pretty hands off and will let you do your thing unless you're stuck. This place is amazing!!! I would recommend Ocean Stained Glass a million times! I had the best time learning how to make stained glass, it was a great experience and I would love to do it again. Super fun for anyone artsy and creative! I did a groupon stained glass class here and it was truly awesome! They made the class really fun and easy going. I was worried I would not be able to do this but it was surprisingly easy to pick up. They had provided me with an apron, which was really nice and unexpected. My sister gave me this class as a birthday gift. She got it through Groupon. We were very excited to see what the workshop was all about. The instructor/shop owner could not take our reservation for several months due to the popularity on the Groupon coupon. Upon arriving we found the door locked and no one there. It was a weekend day. We were starting to think it was not going to happen. We telephoned the instructor after 20 minutes of standing out front and were told she was still driving, but getting close to the shop. When she arrived - no apology. Um. Ok. There is very limited room to even move past one another to get to the supplies. The shop is extremely small. The project is a normally a small round stained glass project. However she was out of the round glass base. The substitution was a cheap 3x5 picture frame. We did the glass work on top of the glass from the picture frame. Very disappointing substitution. She has templates to help with design ideas, but limited glass color selection. I would have preferred to have had the opportunity to purchase the colors I wanted to use - instead of digging through an big tub of scrap glass. It was hard to find colors I liked that were in good condition. We also did not realize it was a two day class of sorts. Once your project is assembled you must return another day to complete the class - which means another appointment is necessary. Overall it was fun, in spite of all the disappointments, but I'm glad we did not shell out full price. If you want to try this, wait for a Groupon, expect booking delays, limited glass choices and know it will take two days of onsite attendance to complete. read more

I gifted the experience as an anniversary gift and we each got to make our own stained glass pendant from start to finish and learned each step along the way. Just had a GDO (girls day out) and took Joni's glass jewelry class. What a fun experience to design and to make glass fused jewelry that you can say is handmade! Joni guides you every step of the way. You can tell that she enjoys what she does! First you figure out your color scheme and design, and then you put together the different glass pieces (i.e. using dichrotic glass) in different layers. Then Joni "cooks" them in a kiln that reaches over 1500 degrees so that the glass melts and fuses together. The surprise is that once the glass melds together, the colors can change so your design is actually a surprise when it cools and comes out of the kiln! I made 2 pendants and 1 pair of earrings and was so excited to see the results. I can't wait to take some of the other classes such as making a mosaic and stained glass. I already told my friends about it and now we're thinking of getting a small group for a birthday "craft-day" get-together. read more

I found this really awesome place on Groupon and since my friend stated she loved mosaic/stain glass, a small group of us decided to purchase it for her birthday outing. Of course none of us four has ever done a mosaic so we weren't sure what to expect. I had called and left a message for Valerie to ask if the four us could use our Groupon at the same time since some places will not allow it. Unfortunately, I never heard back from her so me being persistent called back and got her live. She okayed it and scheduled us in for our appointment, yay!!! The shop is small and the workplace can't hold more than 4-6 at a time at least for mosaic, but for our group of four it was perfect and we were the only four in the shop. Val gave us her undivided attention which we needed. Lol The mosaic process is very fun and a bit time consuming so plan to be at her shop for at least 3 hours. We actually where there for 3.5 hrs and probably could have used more time, but she had another group after us. Completely understandable, can't take up her entire day. There are little stools to sit on, a bit hard on the rump, but you can stand as well. I would suggest going back and forth. By the end of our session, our back ached due to slumping over to cut glass, place our glass etcetera. It was ALL worth it though as we all left after making an amazing mosaic masterpiece. The tool used to cut the glass is a bit tricky and intimidating; however easy to use. Unfortunately, my friend cut herself a couple of times from holding the cut glass, not uncommon. Throughout our session, Val was available to ask questions, give her expertise advice, offer suggestions if asked, even help if necessary OR nothing if you don't need anything. She is very kind, patient and encouraging throughout the whole time. Now keep in mind, the mosaic project is two parts. First visit is to assemble the mosaic, and the second visit is to grout it. You grout, then go enjoy lunch for an hour and come back to scrape off some grout, buff the glass etcetera and off you go with your beautiful piece of mosaic. We all four completely enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to take her other class, stain glass. Thanks Val, you were GREAT!!!!! read more

My client bought a lovely 1920s Spanish in Belmont Shores that had a large stained glass window at the stairs landing. It was just before the Close of Escrow that we noticed some panes were damaged. She can accommodate small parties and this would be a great activity to do with friends. I took a four hour beginner mosaic class. Val showed us past examples from students, helped us pick patterns, and showed us how to cut class. She sets you free to create but buzzed around finding glass colors and giving creative suggestions. You get to create a small mosaic piece. It is a two part class to finish. A four hour session to create the glass work. Then a couple weeks later you go back to grout the piece. I've been wanting to learn to make stained glass for YEARS. I snapped up a groupon for a friend and I for a 3-hour beginner's class. Val is extremely organized, professional, encouraging, pleasant and helpful. She anticipates the needs of each student to make sure we're safe and work surfaces are kept clean/ready for each phase in the process. We would look up from working and she already had tools/materials queued up for us. All the tools/items are well maintained plus labeled so we can work independently.
