I don't live in Woonsocket but wanted to support a smaller business vs a large chain. Called ahead & spoke to front desk agent 1, she confirmed they take my eye insurance which is a common one. Walk in day of exam, get my exam done, I was then told by front desk agent 2 (I believe it was a blonde woman) I don't have eye insurance and only my exam is free but the glasses/lens aren't covered by any insurance. I know for a fact I have coverage and tell her I called to confirm I did and was told so by front desk agent 1 and it was taken by this eye office. I was disregarded by front desk agent 2 and told to call HR at my job about it. I wasn't going to stay and debate as she was unfriendly. Contacted my HR office and they confirmed I had said eye provider. I call the eye office back and reached front desk agent 1 who confirmed (again!) I had said eye insurance which I said I know I did all along. Because of this incompetent experience from front desk agent 2 I just had them send my eye prescription over to an outside big chain eye office instead because this office wasted my time calling around and driving to another town. I go to the big chain eye office, pick out my glasses no problem. Get the glasses and the prescriptions felt so off, he tells me wear them for a few weeks to get used to them and if it still feels off call the small eye chain (Atlantic family) and ask for a re-exam. I wear them for Over a month hoping to get used to them. They don't feel right. I feel cross eyed wearing them, can't gauge distance when I walk and the floor feels elevated. I go back to Atlantic family, they test my glasses and said my prescriptions match what was on file from exam at their office. I ask if maybe the exam needs to be redone ? She says if I wanted to "entertain" that idea I could get re-examed. I didn't like the wording and treatment assuming I was being a difficult customer (why would I lie about the prescriptions being off?) all I wanted was to see correctly while driving and living life lol. Disappointed again at this place. I just wait until 2025 comes around instead to get exam at a different big chain instead of Atlantic family. I Won't come back. My eye exam was a bit weird too. She barely had me view the board to call off what I saw. Just 2 lines of it. The exam would be more in depth as I had sat in with my child's exam and it seemed more thorough. Fast forward a few months later it's now 2025: I get a new eye exam from a big eye chain and they tell me old prescription from only a few months ago at Atlantic family was completely off. I had astigmatism in BOTH eyes not just ONE and the vision in my left eye was completely different than what Atlantic family prescribed. Don't let Atlantic family eye gaslight you into believing the exam they do is correct.

The price for the exam was $65 which seemed reasonable compared with $125 at an place closer to my apartment. I showed up for the first appointment and while Kim, the receptionist, was nice enough, she claimed she had left me a message saying my appointment was delayed and I wouldn't be seen for another 3 hours. I don't drive (am disabled after a broken neck and multiple TBI's) so I didn't really have a choice; I opted to wait the 3 hours till the doctor would see me. This was the first time I've ever had a contact lens fitting where the doctor used his own, unwashed hands to put the contacts in my eyes. A week or so later, during this trial period of testing the lenses, I developed a discharge from my right eye and the lens itself was likely defective as it kept popping out of my eye. I called to make another appointment and explained the issue with the lens popping out. The doctor and his son (I'm guessing they are related somehow) didn't seem too happy to give me another pair of lenses to try out. It's like jeeze, you guys aren't paying for the lenses, what's the beef? Oh and then I was shamed for having Medicaid. They apparently saw me as some kind of "free loader" and treated me rudely. My case worker was with me for the second appointment and we both looked at each other like is this really happening? Are we really being treated like this? The doctor made a particularly rude comment to my case worker and then plainly ignored her when she asked him a question. He muttered some off color joke under his breath - it was super uncomfortable. The really fun part was when I went to choose a pair of glasses from the Medicaid section of available frames. I prefer to have larger lenses/frames as they help me see much better. I picked out the biggest frames in the Medicaid selection and boy, the man who "helped" me was not pleased at all. Again, these are glasses for me, not this dude. Why was he so upset I chose glasses which were covered by Medicaid and available in the section of their store FOR MEDICAID GLASSES. This guy kept telling me, or trying to tell me, there was no way they could put lenses in the frames I had chosen, and seemed appalled overall by my selection and persistence. He then tried to charge me an additional $40 bucks (talked down from his original pitch of $60) to put lenses in the frames. Dude, the glasses are covered by Medicaid, you can't charge people for glasses that are covered by this plan. Ugh. When I went back for the last time to get the new trial lenses and get a copy of my prescription, the Medicaid nazi was again seemingly appalled by my presence. How dare I have an eye exam, a trial pair of lenses and a pair of glasses covered by Medicaid? When I asked for a copy of my prescription, he struggled to use the printer/copier, I assume it hadn't been used for a long time and/or the guy just didn't know what he was doing or how to operate the machine. He begrudgingly gave me my prescription, though of course the doctor failed to indicate which eye had whatever number the prescription is. Really not looking forward to calling for clarification but oh well, looks like I'll have to. I obviously won't be going back to Shalmar for further eye exams, and can't recommend this place to others. It's unfortunate as they do have a nice selection of eyewear but meh, you can find great glasses elsewhere and be treated with respect, regardless of what insurance you have. One and only star goes to Kim, for at least attempting to be pleasant. I can't imagine having to work in such a small space with that doctor and his rude son. She's probably seen a lot.

I was 10 min early but I got to see the eye doctor 10-15 min pass my appt time, which is pretty normal I guess. The exam is good and I love everything he did because he is quite thorough and he showed me what is what. After the test I was able to go check on glasses, what glasses to get etc and I got a few choices. I decided on one pair and they said to wait 7-10 days but it was about 3 weeks before they gave me my glasses. I have called once a week, and they said no, on the third week when I called they told me it came it earlier but we tried calling and no one answered.. what... anyway good place but not so sure about the glass shop..

It's also the same building where I see my dermatologist and rheumatologist, and about a 15-20 minute walk from where I am, so really a plus. The experience here was pleasant. There was one other person ahead of me so the wait time wasn't bad. Dr. Cesaro here is really awesome, you know he knows what he's doing. This was a nice change from the other place I was going to (I will probably write a review about that later. Long story short, avoid mall optical shops at all costs). The person who had helped me select styles was Mary Ann, who also knows exactly what she's doing and tells you honestly what she thinks works well with a person's face. A breathe of blatant fresh air when you compare that to the sales associate at Lenscrafters that tries to push you to buying something that looks nice without regard to accommodation. Obv, I don't speak for all Lenscrafters, just from the experience I've had. They were nice enough to take notes on the styles that I kept in mind for later visits. I did eventually come back recently to try them on again but decided not to make a purchase. (really the price for what I had choosen was out of my range... $200 for frames, $130 for regular lenses, or $180 for poly carbonate lens which are thinner and less heavier). These were brand name Coach eyeglasses, not a big shocker. As much as I loved them I had to depart from them and call around for better deals. So, all in all great staff here. It would be 4 stars had it not been for steeper price range. Nonetheless great styles if you're willing to pay for the price.
