My girlfriend and I have been wanting to go horseback riding for sometime now. We went to OVS for our 2 year anniversary, and what an amazing experience it was! Beau was incredibly professional and helpful during our trail ride. Zeus and Rose were fantastic horses, and their years of experience really showed on the trail. The staff is super friendly here. I give this place an S+. We'll be back in December!

Not one to leave reviews but this was so perfect it had to be done. My lovely Wife had riding horseback on the beach on her short list of things she dreamed of doing. I set up a surprise ride with the team at Oceanview stables with no expectations short of perfect day out doing different things with my Wife. We showed up on the most beautiful day clear in the bay, which is rare in and of itself. The horses were gorgeous and the staff helpful and happy. My Wife saddled Rose and I Raven. Zach and Kirby took us out for a ride. They were fantastic gentleman with my Wife who had never ridden. They gave her full confidence and comfort in riding. The setting was beautiful, the trails fantastic, the conversation and the private time couldn't have been curated more perfectly. 10/10 will do it again and would recommend to anyone who interested and even those who have not even thought about it. Cannot say enough about our experience. Will support this Veteran own business being run by a family and improving our beautiful Bay Area activity options. The commitment of Zack and family to the care of the coast and trails is nothing short of heroic. Very thankful and cannot wait to return. On the site booking another trail ride now. You should too.

Text messages with a staff to cancel lesson plans

In my opinion, Oceanview Stable has disorganized management. Due to incorrect information from customer service, a staff member agreed to cancel the lesson plans, but charges continued because of internal miscommunication. Management refused to acknowledge the mistake or issue a refund. Instructor quality is inconsistent, and my daughter had a different instructor almost every time who did not know her level. I was also very concerned to see an injured horse still being used for lessons. The horse was nervous and sensitive, which felt unsafe for children, and it showed a lack of concern for animal welfare. Overall, a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.

The best horseback riding experience I've ever had! I've done trail rides during my travels--in SoCal, Arizona, Mexico, etc. but never have I experienced the horsemanship part in the beginning. I loved that & it should be a standard for everyone to do because it just makes sense, especially for those who have never ridden before. The trail rides I've done they usually just inform us how to turn & stop & that's about it, then we immediately go on the trail ride. I loved this experience because I actually got to learn about the horses too, it wasn't just about riding them. I learned things I never have before, which again are basics but should be taught for everyone trail ride experience. If you're gonna ride an animal you should know how to approach them, interact with them, trust them, etc. Even the trail was beautiful with all the mountain & ocean scenery, it was the best way to highlight California's beauty. I'd highly recommend this trail ride experience, it definitely exceeded expectations

What a great way to spend an afternoon, evening or even morning ride, Juan was our guide he was so knowledgeable and welcoming since the moment we arrive we can not recommend this place enough... ohh and the horses are just so beautiful and well mannered

This experience was so much fun for my first time riding a horse, lexi and the other wrangler (i forgot her name sorry) were very nice and fun to be around, the views were beautiful and this was overall just such a great way to spend your weekend. I definitely recommend!

Jamie was our amazing guide with 16 years of guide experience with Oceanview Stables. He took us through the most amazing trails atop the mountains running along the ocean. He shows incredible attention while riding keeping an eye on all the riders and horses so nobody falls behind or having horse issues. This was on my bucket list for over 50 years, and I had an ear to ear grin the entire time while in awe of the amazing scenery. Along the beach part of the ride we encountered a beachside cave! Highly recommended, so not think twice! Well worth the money!!!

Ask the Community - Ocean View Stables

Can there be two people on one horse?

No. One person per horse is the safe route. I don't know anyone who would put two people on a horse.

    What's the price per hour?

    ~ 100 plus tip.

Can I ever ride alone? or is it always with a group? Riding a string horse can be pretty boring in line. Can I ride with only 2 or three other riders (I would know and brought these riders)?

    They have private rides available

Can I ride a horse without any experience?

    No prior experience needed!

One of the horses, Elmo (20yo), does walk a little funny. I rode Ben who was a nice horse, snacked a lot, but overall a little silly horse. One of the guides told me to pull on the reins harder to get him to stop grazing, but I didnt know if he had a bit or not. I didn't want to hurt him. Elmo did try to bite Ben, but the guide brushed it off as horseplay. I didn't think it was since he kept trying to create distance between them. Upon mounting and adjusting the stirrups, I noticed that the saddle kept leaning to the left. I asked the guide if the saddle was okay and not ready to slide completely to the left, but she told me that it was just uneven ground. During the whole ride, I had to overexert my left leg to distribute my weight and not fall off. We stopped to double-check the stirrups halfway, but the guide only checked my right stirrup. I tried speaking up, but she ignored me. The guide's horse also got angry with another horse which a child was on. He looked about 10 years old and he seemed scared. The guide's horse did try to kick the other one. One of the ponies had a muzzle on due to biting. He did try to bite a teenage girl's leg. I couldn't tell if she worked there or not, but she seemed pretty young. A 7 year old was mounted on the pony and he did not like it. He kept reversing and shaking his head. The next day, I felt really sore in my left leg. I thought it was because of the bumpy ride, but the soreness kept getting worse. I couldn't (still can't) walk properly, lay down, or bear weight on it without being in pain. I talked to my friend who does dressage and she told me it was because of the left stirrup and saddle was set incorrectly. I wish there was an adult guide alongside the ones who looked about my age (17-18) because it would make others feel safe (especially ones with little kids) to know that there's another adult who has a lot of experience. I'm not saying that the teens are inexperienced, but based on what I've seen and been through... it seems like the best option.

Diane and my daughter's instructor Kailey have been such a huge part of my daughter's healing and happiness. I do believe that horses provide therapy and this has seriously been life-changing for my daughter. In the short amount of time, she has learned so much about riding, horsemanship, and has a real passion to keep learning and going far in the sport. I haven't seen her so passionate about anything like this in a long time. They really take the time necessary to train each person on every aspect of horses and horse riding. It's beautiful to watch and I love having my daughter come home and tell me all of the things that she's learning. It's hard work but the feeling of accomplishment is like nothing you can imagine. I have seen several of the instructors and every single one of them is very positive and uplifting and I am not used to that because in the past when we have been around riding instructors, I have noticed that there has been a lot of negativity. There was no one there. I called the company. Brenda answered. I stated that our party is at the gate and waiting for a member or further instructions. She insisted that there was no booking for 12 pm. I had several confirmations, including an email. I had a difficult time trying to explain this as she kept insisting that there was no booking . I could not get a word in. When i tried to state my case, I was told that I was interrupting and was persistent about the booking mistake as though we were at fault. She gave us the option of rebooking. Since we were from out of town and had driven a distance, we said that 2 pm same-day would be okay. And that we would be back. She recommended a couple of areas to see, which we appreciated. We came back before 2 pm. No one was there. Called 3x, left voicemails, sent an email, sent a text. No answer until perhaps 2:45 pm with a text stating that a text-notification was sent. When I reviewed the text, it stated that we can reschedule or get a refund. However, it made no reference to what needed to be rescheduled: the 12 pm reservation (which was already rescheduled) or the 2 pm reservation. There was no further explanation. No apology for a second same-day cancellation. I understand if an emergency situation arises. But the least they could do was communicate BOTH of the cancellations better and more clearly. Answering phone calls would have also been a good business model. Several calls, voicemail, an email, texts from a customer only to be deflected. The owner needs to take accountability. I do not appreciate the gaslighting.

The horse I rode was an angel. BUT the ride almost didn't happen for me. Why? Because one one of the workers abused me by yelling at me in a loud, condescending, and absolutely terrifying way that left me with fright, anger, and tears in my eyes that I had to hide behind my sunglasses so that my daughter and her cousin wouldn't see. It was infuriating and 3 months later I am still a bit distraught. It was my very first time EVER on a horse and still to this day I am not totally sure what I did wrong which prompted the worker to abuse me but I assure you I did nothing intentionally bad. Perhaps I pulled the reigns too far back. I am not sure and there was a language barrier as well so I did ask "what?" and had some confusion as to what he wanted me to do or not to do. I do not remember the worker's name. But I will never forget the anger, rage, and terror he spewed toward me. My cousin after the ride even told me he heard him yell at me. Whatever I did "wrong" there was no justification to be treated the way I did by this person. And for this I will never go back to this place nor will my child. The feeling I experienced after getting berated all the while trying to navigate a whole new feeling and experience of being on a horse for the FIRST time was overwhelming to say the least. I almost quit right there but I did not want to take away from my child's or family's experience. I also had looked forward to this adventure as I had gone through cancer treatment prior and what better way to celebrate than to ride a beautiful horse on beautiful Half Moon Bay...? THANK GOD there was another worker who was an absolute joy full of smiles and KIND who helped ease my angst and made the experience enjoyable. I'm glad I did it and completed it but BOY what a horrible horrible start. I hope this company takes a look at their workers and re-evaluates them because I will never return or suggest this place to anyone. I can NOT imagine if the person who yelled at me yelled at another person who was more vulnerable than I OR at a child god forbid. THIS is why I am finally writing something. I just had my family that went on the ride visit me recently and we were talking about the incident and my cousin's wife said ..."you know what, leave the review..what if that person treats a child like that in the future?" And so here I am letting people know that there is a worker out there who is totally completely out of line. I understand safety first BUT this was NOT the way in which to handle a situation not in dire need. The horse was at a standstill. I did not yank or do anything abrupt or out of line to warrant the horrid behavior spewed toward me. Even If the situation was dire or dangerous there should have been a totally different way to approach it. He ruined a part of a very meaningful experience. However, I'm glad I found the strength to go on and persevere and create memories with my family. The ride was in November 2025.
