We've been coming here every trip for many years. The last two years, we ended up with the same miserable waitress. No drink refills, had to ask for napkins and silverware. Also, we stopped on the $1 taco night and my daughter asked if she could have hers without salsa and the waitress immediately snapped that no changes would be made. How hard is it to omit the salsa you add on the taco? You'd save yourself a few seconds of time. Sadly, this will no longer be an establishment we visit every summer. read more

We had a wonderful experience here overall. When we first got there I would say the hostess was less than interested in helping us, which did not create a good first impression. However, once we were seated we had a lovely waitress who provided top notch service. She recommended the Mermaid Martinis which were on special that night and they were both beautiful and delicious. Let's face it...the dead of winter in the Outer Banks, you don't have a LOT of dining options. We had rented a house in Rodanthe for my January birthday and there were 10 of us. This was the closest open restaurant. We stopped by at lunch to check out the menu, see how late they were open, and to make sure that they would be able (and willing) to accommodate a party of our size. The lunch manager said it wouldn't be a problem at all, and they closed at 8. We arrive a little before six and as SOON as we walked in, it was obvious that no one had to conveyed to the night manager/host that our party was coming. We were seated promptly though, and they quickly took our drink order. Now is when things start going south...it took awhile to get all of our drinks but it that was ok. The bartender didn't know how to make a royal flush so made us PRE-MIXED Jaeger bombs. Still not mad. All of our food comes out...well, 8 out of 10. Not bad right? The waitress (who I'm also pretty sure is the bartender) assures us it'll be "right out". TWENTY MINUTES LATER...we're all done eating and the other 2 finally get their food. No apology, no comp offers, nothing. Now, the food was good. Not excellent but better than okay. Some of our party liked their meals better than others but to be honest, I more remember the ordeal rather than the food. (Other than the mac and cheese, which almost everyone ordered, and LOVED!) I gave 3 stars trying to be fair...I know we were a big party during a slow part of the year but we did give you warning and there is no excuse for 2 out of 10 people to get their food so late with no explanation or discount. read more

We were excited to give this place a try with their extensive menu but unfortunately never got the chance. Our party of 9 arrived and we're "greeted" by the hostess who acted like we were the biggest inconvenience of her day. She explained that it would be over an hour wait and I told her that was fine, we expected that much for our larger party, all with smiles. She begrudgingly said she had just seated 2 large parties. I asked her if we should just go somewhere else then? And she just stared at me, annoyingly. She reiterated it was going to be an hour and I told her, again, that was totally fine and we'd happily wait. She asked if I was sure and this honestly should have just been a huge red flag but I said yes. It was 6 so not even close to cutting into closing time so I'm really not sure what the issue was. While we waited outside, I kept catching her glance of annoyance at us and heard another party complain about wait times and other parties being sat before them. I heard the hostess get into a back and forth with one of the other party members and decided to just take our name off the list and try our luck somewhere else. She didn't acknowledge or respond to my request. The whole encounter was SUPER awkward and very off putting. I read a few yelp reviews on our way to the next spot and this is apparently par for the course at this restaurant. There are so many other awesome restaurants on the island who greet their customers with a smile and have excellent food/ service so we will definitely not be returning to this one. read more

My last review was from 2017, when Oceana's was on top of it's game. Since then I would say there has been a decline in service and food quality. Sub par parmesan makes a slim appearance on the salad. Olives no longer appear. Blue cheese crumbles used to be generous in the dressing. The chowders (clam and crab/corn) are thin and lack luster. Chicken wings have been scrawny and overdone. In general the food has not been hot upon arrival to the table/bar counter. As of this summer they no longer offer my personal indulgence of a champagne split. A travesty! As for the service, it really has taken a slide. There are two newer males working the bar who quite obviously prefer catering to men. My husband even noticed it. In these contentious times, this kind of behavior has no place in what used to be a welcoming neighborhood bar. Expressions and opinions of 'issues', have no place from the wait staff. The wait time was incredibly long for our large party. The waitress was very busy, she had a lot of tables, but did a very good job. The bar was an absolute mess, bartender was completely overwhelmed, had no help at all, causing drinks to take forever to come out. They kept running out of things in the bar area. Not sure what happened last night, but everything seemed to be off. We knew we would have a 45-60 minute wait for our party of six to sit outside, but after an hour and a half I checked back and was informed they don't actually have outdoor tables for six. I suggested we just add a chair to one of the three empty tables and that solved the problem. Sigh. The adults in our party ordered the shrimp and grits, rare steak and two grilled tuna entrees based on waitress's suggestion that it was "super fresh." Steak came out well done, shrimp and grits was a grit cake and shrimp floating in butter with no other flavors (no chives, discernible sauce, nothing) and tunas were weird thin rectangle slabs that looked frozen patties from Costco that definitely had not been grilled. We would have mentioned at least the very well done steak to the waitress, but she never came back to check on us. The staff were are nice and cheerful, but pretty clueless about hostessing and serving basics. Maybe the chef hasn't arrived yet and the kitchen hands resorted to microwaving? Maybe the manager was off for the night? Who knows, but we won't be back. read more

Even in off season, the service was incredibly slow. There was only one other table (2 people) when we arrived and it took a full 45 minutes to get our dinner (and it was barely warm when served). Waitress was also the bartender and I didn't look but I'm pretty sure she's the cook too. Ordered the sesame seared tuna (based on Yelp reviews) and it was pretty good for cuisine in this neck of the woods. I'm giving this place 3 stars only for the food. The good was excellent! I had their eggs benedict, my fiance had their biscuits and gravy, my mother in law had an omelet, and my fiances best friend had some eggs. The benedict was better than any diner I've been too; creamy hollandaise, perfectly poached eggs, and tender English muffins! My fiancé loved his biscuits and gravy as well, as did everyone else. Here is where the place should receive no stars. First we waited 15 minutes before our server realized we were there. No true apologies, but whatever. We put our order in, received our food, and about 45 minutes later we finally see our server again all out of breath and sweaty. "Oh sorry guys, I had to run to the post office before it closes, haha." Um, excuse me? Thank goodness for the other server who finished us up! He was actually attentive. I can start off by saying that yes, I ordered the Crabcake... again. What can I say? I'm from Baltimore. It was mostly all filler, with small bits of vegetables in it, no lump crabmeat in sight. I was pretty disappointed. The rest of the "pub grub" we indulged in was ok, but nothing I'd write home about. We had gone in for lunch and there wasn't a single other person dining in, so it was quiet at least. I don't have huge gripes about this place, but it didn't leave a good enough impression for me to visit it again. read more

This was my favorite place in Avon, not all for the food but the absolutely OUTSTANDING service. We came twice, once for breakfast and once sitting at the bar for .65 wings and $2 Yuengling Bottles, can't beat that. The watiress for breakfast was great, friendly and on the spot with everything. I got the biscuits and gravy and they were very good. HUGE chunks of sausage in there. It wasn't terribly hot and may have been under the heat lamp too long while the other meals came out. But, very good nonetheless. For the time at the bar, the bartender was so sweet and bubbly. She constantly had a smile on her face. She was training another girl who was an absolute doll. She was busting my chops for not finishing my wings, I love that. For 11 beers, hush puppies and 20 wings (don't judge me, my wife was there too!) I paid $40 plus tip....for me that is outstanding! By far this was my favorite place in Avon to eat and hang out. It had the most amount of normal people at the bar too. The only downside is that breakfast doesn't open until 8. read more

After doing a Yelp search for breakfast in Avon, I ran across this place. Based on the so-so reviews, I wasn't expecting anything great. But of the 3 places on Yelp in Avon for breakfast, got the highest star rating - only 3.5 stars. So last Sunday morning, we decided to give it a try. I have to say, I ended up really enjoying breakfast at this place! The server was attentive and coffee was tasty and hot. I had the Santa Fe omelet with fresh mushrooms, red peppers, ham, and subbed the onions for spinach. It was perfect! The breakfast potatoes (which I usually don't like) were nice and crispy on the outside. My boyfriend had the eggs benedict which he really enjoyed. However, from my view, they DRENCHED it in hollandaise sauce, which would not have been my cup-of-tea, so I'd recommend ordering the sauce on the side unless you'd rather have the hollandaise sauce breakfast (with a touch of eggs benedict?). All in all, the place definitely deserves 4 stars for their breakfast! read more

While touring the area we stopped here for lunch based upon T/A reviews and were very glad we did. Everything we ordered, including sides, was either very good or excellent, and prices are very fair for the quality of the food. Steamed clams app's were tender and tasty. The grilled Mahi sandwich was a standout. The Mahi was moist, tender and very flavorful, served on a fresh bun with all the fixin's. The fish and chips was a single large filet lightly coated with a thin crispy crust with plenty of fresh flavor. Fries and homemade chips were very good as was the coleslaw. Service could not have been friendlier, and they have a decent beer list with many at special prices. Kind of a can't miss joint that is so nice to find. read more

Our first morning on vacation at OBX, we stopped for breakfast at Oceana Bistro. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast that included a delectable Greek omelette and the best grits I have ever tasted! We were so impressed with breakfast we decided to go back for dinner. Our dinner was not as good and as a matter of fact the dish we ordered either needs to be removed from the menu or recreated to get what the customer thinks is coming to the table. We ordered the scallops, shrimp and tuna pasta. One would think the dish would consist of whole scallops, whole shrimp; however, the equivalent of no more than two sliced/chopped shrimp and two sliced scallops was a sad disservice to the dish. The cheese sauce was watery and bland. There was a hearty serving of dark cubed tuna, but would have liked to have seen less of this. Sorry, guys, don't order this dish unless you want to be disappointed. Great breakfast, though! read more

2 stars mainly because I'm not comfortable with this restaurant's practice of letting children sit at the bar. I'm unsure of NC's liquor laws (we're visiting from PA), but I'm not used to sitting at a bar next to a young group of teenagers. We came for taco night. The tacos were good but spicier than I'd have expected. They might consider putting their spicy salsa on the side instead of directly on the taco. The margarita was much sweeter than I'd have expected. I'd recommend skipping the margarita (which truly did taste like a mix) and going for a beer. read more
