I'm surprised it took me this long to visit Oceanique, considering I love trying new restaurants, love seafood, and am within walking distance to this place. Anyway, I just visited Oceanique a few days ago for Restaurant Week, and tried their $44 dinner tasting menu. I made a reservation at 9pm, and my friend and I got there ~10-15 minutes early. The initial walk in was a little awkward - we just stood there for a few minutes, unacknowledged by anybody. I told one hostess that we had made a reservation for 9 but if we could be seated a little earlier. She said tables were getting cleared and we would be seated soon... but it wasn't until another hostess asked if we had been helped that we finally got seated. Not the best first impression, so good thing the food/service made up for that. Food: 4 stars. - Chef's surprise starter was an arctic char ceviche, and although it wasn't amazing, it was a good way to start the meal. - Starter: maine day boat scallops with kimchi and lobster-soy broth. I really liked this dish - the scallops were well flavored, had a beautiful sear, and were very tender. I was surprised at how strong the kimchi flavor was - being Korean, I'm used to Western restaurants downplaying the flavors since it's pretty pungent to begin with, but it was delicious. - Entree: wild main skate which was great as well. The fish itself was super tender and well flavored. - Dessert was a surprise, and I got some sort of chocolate mousse dessert. Delicious. Service: 5 stars - Attentive but not intrusive, and very polite. The plates came out a bit slower than I'm used to, but that gave me a chance to talk to my friend (I have a tendency to wolf down my food and just leave, even at nicer restaurants), so I didn't mind too much. We also ordered a bottle of wine for $64, so I spent a total of $100 with tip and tax. I also had the pleasure of speaking with the chef, and he was so friendly! (When I told him I made the 20 minute walk in sub-zero temperatures to come here, he said I was in for a cold walk back, to which I told him (I was a little buzzed) that I had a nice wine blanket...) If you are looking for a quiet evening with a bff or a significant other, definitely think about Oceanique, you will not be disappointed. I've been here a few times with either the husband or a girlfriend, each time has been wonderful and exciting. I've had the chef's choice and enjoyed the special treats that he would prepare. Note, not having any allergies and not being not in the slightest bit of a picky eater means I get lots of yummy creations! There is an extensive wine list. This last visit, we enjoyed the Malbec with our five course meal. It was smooth and crisp and definitely a good choice. The meal seemed like we would end up hungry since the servings were tiny but it was a bit deceiving since we were so fun by the time dessert came out! We started with a single bite of tuna. It was so fresh and so refreshing and I wished there was more! The next round was calamari and other fresh seafood. It was all grilled to perfection! So good that I didn't even want to share! Next was some refreshing sorbet. The main course was a wonderful salmon for her and a perfect skate for me it was delicious! We finished with a warm fruit tart for her and a chocolate, chocolate cake for me. OMG, they were both so perfect. So rich and so satisfying. If you haven't tried them out, you really should think about making a reservation and checking it out. You'll be treated like royalty and will enjoy a wonderful feast. read more

I had no idea that this restaurant was a part of the Evanston landscape. It's not immediately downtown. Well, you don't have to always go downtown to get the best there is to get. I went to Oceanique during Restaurant Week in early February. The experience was so good that I decided to return to blog the restaurant. Oh was I glad that I did. Flight of whiskey cocktails. A four-course degustation without looking at the menu. I am the first to admit that I have a discriminating palate, so I'm not a fan of just anyone's seafood fare. Oceanique is not Red Lobster, by any stretch of the imagination: not that there is anything wrong with Red Lobster. What I love is the freshness of the offerings. I couldn't care less about the presentation, as long as my appetite is satisfied. The server did an outstanding job coming up with recommendations. And the bartender was best in the bartending trade because the flight of whiskies I requested, all which are NOT on the drink menu, were a hit. Oceanique is not the restaurant for a cheap date or a tight pocketbook. It's pricey and that can be off-putting to many and an appetite suppressant for most. But if you love good seafood and a great beverage menu, I recommend Oceanique highly. read more

We came here for a 5-course prefix dinner. Have to say -- this is truly a hidden gem in Evanston. Upon walking in, you can instantly tell that this place has its history. At the same time, its music and table layout created a great atmosphere. Our waiter was super nice and attentive. Thumbs up for him! The first course was a chef's surprise -- a trout and halibut ceviche. The presentation was elegant and looked amazing. I was surprised to see the toasted seaweed pieces on the plate at first. Yet after trying to wrap the ceviche with the seaweed, I was sold on this combination. To a certain extent, the dish gave me a Japanese vibe hahaha. As for the appetizers, we chose the lobster salad and the scallops with kimchi. The lobster dish was right on point -- all the ingredients in the salad worked well together. With cheese and lobster, can I consider it as a surf and turf? lol. On the other hand, the scallops dish were a bit let down. The scallops themselves was perfectly cooked, yet their slightly sweet and delicate flavor was overwhelmed by the kimchi. I was expecting a more refreshing flavor. The main dishes were for sure the highlight of the night. Normally, I'm not a big fan of the swordfish, as its texture can get pretty tough when not cooked properly. Oceanique definitely did the swordfish its justice. It was still a bit translucent in the center, leaving the texture of the flesh firm, yet not dry at all. The trout dish had a great flavor profile. I was a huge fan of the cheese corn on the side. My only concern was, yet again, about the fish skin. I was a bit confused why the chef would choose to first peel the fish skin from the flesh, and then hidden (?) the skin beneath the fish piece. As far as my preference goes, fish skin only tastes good when it is crispy. I couldn't break the fish skin into pieces using any of the silverware provided. And I certainly did not want to eat it as a whole. In a word, it was a wonderful place for special moments. Maybe I'll be back in the future! read more

Went in for restaurant week special at 59.00....which was way overpriced for what was served...in addition the food was nothing to rave about...not even close to fine French Cuisine.....complimentary Ceviche was mediocre, then came the starter, Chicken Liver Pate served with what appeared to be aspic and a type of tapenade, not a great pairing....entree, Scottish Salmon, pretty good served on a thin slice of sweet potatoe with a bare minimum of corn kernels.... dessert lacked presentation, appeared rather messy and once again just ok. Finally, had a cocktail, Cucumber Martini which was sickly sweet and had to ask for one sans all the sweet syrup. Bill exceeded 125.00 with gratuity. Sorry, wont be back.....Bread was excellent. While I don't mind small portions these portions were rather small except for the main entree. I picked the lobster salad, which was ok, husband picked the green soup - forget what it was called. He didn't like it. The chef's surprise was a bit random, and very tiny. The sorbet was tasty. The main entree we both picked the salmon - I got the potatoes, which were green. The salmon was adequate I think in size, and flavor. The dessert was probably one of the best part, which was rather generous, and the chef picked the type of dessert. We paid over $70 for the Groupon, but they added 20% tip, plus food tax plus a COVID surcharge! I felt that was inappropriate. There were no masks, no sanitizer, nothing. Husband felt hungry after we were done, and had a large salad at home. The staff was attentive and well dressed, husband was impressed by the service, however the food left quite a bit to be desired. We had the scallops on the menu. The scallops were old as the smelled and tasted like ammonia. They served it with kimchi which I thought was odd but it masked the smell and flavor of them being old. Guess that's why it was cooked that way. Most may not notice it but it was evident to us. The food was subpar and I would not go back nor recommend to eat here unfortunately. For the overall price point they present on their menu there should be better quality control. We used a Groupon and paid the full cost for all hundred taxes and fees they charge now. Our server was attentive and helpful, the cuisine was refreshing and full of flavor, and the ambiance was elegant and lively. We ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu and enjoyed all three hours of our stay-- yes, this had been another lengthy and intimate dinner. The Tasting menu, consisting of seven courses, was exquisite, delicious, and timed just perfectly so that we were not rushed or felt too full at any point. We dined on the following: Wild Maine Lobster with Caviar, Bufala Mozzarella, and Avocado. Wild Maine Diver Scallop with Fiddleheads, Kimchi, Lobster Soybroth. Bummer that this restaurant turned out to be so bad. They think that by fancy plating and weird combinations of ingredients they can call themselves fine dining. In fact they reuse the same prep in multiple dishes without thinking much about it. Food is only as flavorful as the ingredients alone, nothing seems to come together to create a cohesive experience. Bread with butter was the best and that tells a lot. Waaaayyyyy overpriced for what it is. And trust me, I am willing to pay for culinary innovation and prime foodie experience. This place is average . Definitely not worth the price! We went for a Groupon for a 5 course menu. Nothing special in each course which they were very small. The main appetizer was a lobster salad which lacked of flavor, no salt , little dressing. It was like a bunch of ingredients throw them together without purpose. I ordered the striped bass for main entry also not exceptional , it was ok, good but nothing that I would retry again. We left hungry and with the Groupon we ended up spending another 150 dollars , the tip was added to the bill and it was more than 20%!!! Hubby found a Groupon special for one of our date night. I must say, hubby takes me out to the finest places and is able to find great deals. Ok I will stop tooting the 'good hubby' horn. Overall pretty mediocre dinner experience. Went here with a Groupon for 50 bucks a head(including tip) and still felt ripped off. The meal is structured as a 5 part course with bread and butter to start of course. You only can choose course 2 and 4 the rest are randomly picked by the chef. Course 1 Halibut and salmon ceviche. 5/10. Didn't have a lot of flavor and the texture was kinda funky. Course 2 Lobster salad. Which was lobster on top of assorted greens with tomatoes and mozzarella. 5/10. Also lacking flavor. Course 3 Mango sorbet palette cleanser. Actually pretty good, 7/10 Course 4 Salmon entree with assorted vegetables and corn. 6/10, it was good but nothing to write home about/have had better fish cooked at home and elsewhere. Unsure if I enjoyed the taste of this more after the previous mediocre courses. Course 5 My partner and I each got unique deserts. I forget the name of what she got but it appeared to be a vanilla custard. However I got the chocolate pot de creme with Hazelnut. 10/10 the best thing on the menu, and sadly the only saving grace of the meal. Overall I'd advise steering clear of the place. Between the very small portion sizes as well as the lack of memorability about the menu, I can't even imagine paying full price. There is a reason this understated, French-inspired fish focused restaurant has been around over 30 years and that's because it delivers time and time again. Simply conceived, beautifully executed dishes in all portions of the menu. The 5 course tasting menu is an excellent value and you won't leave hungry. The portions are very generous. Make sure everyone at the table gets something different and swap around! Beautiful lobster endive salad, creatively garnished chicken liver pâté, 4 large butternut squash ravioli with crispy prosciutto and lots more--standards that are worth trying. And if they have a Bouillabaisse special, get it and don't decline extra bread! You'll be looking for other dishes elements to smear the saffron aioli on! Cocktails and wine are a bit pricey but excellently crafted and there are 3 oz pours available. Weeknight specials make this also a place to pop in for a drink and a snack but you'll probably end up ordering off the menu. Very relaxed, friendly service. Don't hesitate to stop in and while it's a great place for a "special occasion", just eating there makes the occasion special! read more

Oceanique is an overpriced restaurant that serves excellent food. Its a YesBut restaurant. Yes, they make a great manhattan and dirty martini, but $16? In Evanston? Yes, the lobster appetizer was perfectly executed, but where was the lobster? (OK, expecting a lot of lobster in an appetizer is probably a bit much, but still) Yes, the whole roast quail with foie gras is scrumptious, but $38? In Evanston? Yes, the modern dining room was crisp and minimalist with matching wall art, but the floor tiles were straight out of a 70s McDonalds. Yes, the linen towels in the bathroom are a nice touch, but airplane sized bathrooms done French rustic does not a practical combination make. And so on and so forth. Oceanique, in the end, is a schizophrenic experience. The food and drinks were excellent, as was the wine list, but everything was overpriced. As I alluded to above, the decor varies considerably - the bar had a lush, elegant carpeted feel to it, but then one dining room goes modern and minimalist, while the other dining room seemed to go family Italian (I only got a glancing look). If you go, I recommend focusing on the food, and letting someone else foot the (considerable) bill. read more

It was that time again, to use up my soon to be expired Groupon and Oceanique was next up on my list. French seafood sounded great, plus I was excited to try their tasting menu. I'm a sucker for tasting menus. I just can't resist. There's plenty of metered street parking up front, but valet parking is also available. I actually ended up parking in a large parking lot, at the corner of Hinman and Main, next to an apartment. It's a very short walk and you can't beat the meter rates at 25 cents per 3 hours. We each got the 5-course tasting menu, which is regularly $80, but was $40 with the deal. The meal started with the Chef's Surprise, which was a Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare w/ habanero sesame oil. I was starving and the tasty bites were gone within a few seconds. The Wild Maine Lobster salad was very light, scattered with a few pieces of succulent lobster, large chunks of tasty buffalo mozzarella, white asparagus, fresh caviar, and avocado. The next course was some mixed berry sorbet with blood orange, which was very refreshing and a tasty palate cleanser. Next I had the Wild Rhode Island Skate - perfectly cooked and oh so tender. I also tried the Wild Philippine Yellow Fin Tuna, which was also cooked perfectly and was pretty good. All the dishes up to this point were good, but nothing really blew me away. The dessert course was probably my favorite part of the meal. The Day & Night chocolate cake was good and went well with the chestnut ice cream, but the Three Nut Tart was insanely good! The chewy, gooey tart is served warm and is loaded with pecans, walnuts, and topped off with some hazelnuts. Plus it's topped with a scoop of durian ice cream. Despite the weather, the husband arrived home and treated me to a nice dinner there - they participated in the 2008 Restaurant week where a 3 course dinner there was only $20.08! What a steal! They also have a 3 course tasting menu and a 6 course tasting menu. This was a really fabulous French seafood place. Our service was courteous and attentive. We were given a tasting sample courtesy of the chef - something with coulis and avocado and simply melted in our mouths. Their wine list is very extensive. I had their salad which included parmesean cheese sliced with thin slices of prosciutto whereas the husband tried their salad with cheese and pear slices. Both were divinely different than the usual. In between our salad and entree, we were given a pear sorbet to cleanse our palate. I was ready for more sorbet after that! Our entrees were generously portioned and each bite was so flavorful! I had their whitefish which was perfectly steamed and each bite was a moutful! The husband had their shrimp linguini (which I'm sure was good but I don't like shrimp). And dessert was heavenly - we received a dessert platter! We each had a slice of their day/night cake and delicious fruit and a different dessert - I had this lemon raspberry custard concoction that was out of this world. Whereas the husband received an almond, nut tart that was incredibly sweet and sticky instead of the lemon raspberry. I'd love to come back here again - service was wonderful and the food was fabulous. This would be a nice date dinner location, as well. read more

I really don't know how they get away with operating at this price point. I had the wild lake superior whitefish, and not only did I find it completely bland, but the portion size was so laughably small that I ended up having to cook myself a real dinner anyways. Seriously, if this was the first course in their tasting menu I would have understood, but this was a $45 entree. The entire piece of fish was gone in about 4 or 5 bites. Not that I really missed it, as I said before it was decidedly bland. What little sauce that came with the dish had found its way to the bottom corner of the tupperware it came in, and it was really only enough for one bite to be flavorful. Waste of money. read more

Where do I begin? We came in with reservations in one of the scariest weather conditions . We had to call to tell them we would be a little late. Snow storm would not stop our anniversary dinner. When we arrived we were the only ones in the restaurant. My boyfriend and I were feeling a bit down because of the continuous cold and mucky weather but the moment we stepped into Oceanique all those negative feelings blew away. We got the Groupon for the 5 course tasting meal which was a steal at $80 for two people. It was worth every penny and so much more! Everything was perfect, from the extra creamy butter to the beautifully prepared salmon to the delectable lemongrass creme brulee. The service was wonderful and not rushed at all. A friend of ours gave us a group on for this restaurant. The group on we got is the chef's tasting menu for 2. We were excited to try the place since we haven't eaten good seafood for a while now. The place was cozy with elegant interior and the servers are all very polite! And the food is amazing! We left the restaurant with a full tummy and a smile on our faces since now we know where to eat good seafood! We would definitely come back for their lower priced lobster every Wednesday! The only thing we noticed is the crowd. It's mostly old people but we don't mind that at all for the quality of the food and service that this place provides! This long time seafood centric spot is right across the street from the Lucky Platter on Main Street in Evanston and easily reached via the CTA Red Line. Service was very attentive and friendly. The feeling in the restaurant is a bit outdated and tired - we were glad the second (darker) room was full while we were there or it would have been depressing - the first room(with mainly two tops) was nearly empty. The wine list is outrageously priced. We did not check for a corkage fee but even if they did offer one at $50 it would have been worth it. A Tamarack Cellars red - a $15 Binny's price was on the menu for $90 - now that is obscene by most standards. The food was delicious, scallops with cabbage (kimchi) was perfectly cooked and spicy! Foie Gras was rich and delicious and the soft shell crab crispy and fresh. Lobster with beets, spinach and basil mashed potatoes was amazing as was the very fresh and tender halibut. If they could refresh the appearance and reduce the wine list prices a tad they could have a resurgence in traffic. read more

I was bummed that I couldn't try out the yummy looking craft cocktails (I had to take migraine medicine which does not mix well with booze). I quickly forgot about the disappointment of not being able to drink when I was presented with the menu. We did the chef's five course menu which turned into way more courses. Our super friendly waiter brought us out tastes of other items we didn't order between courses. It was also getting to try all the amazing seafood! I assume they're trying to make up (gouging is more like it) for the past two years. Summary: the food is pretty good, but its price is way too high. The staff is very professional, friendly and accommodating, but the place could really use a bit less pretentiousness. I only go here for professional meals, I simply don't think the food is good enough for the matching prices and I don't like the exaggerated high-brow attitude. (A good comparison is Stained Glass elsewhere in Evanston, which manages to mix delicious food with good service in a very nice atmosphere without the hoity-toity attitude.) Oceanique specializes in seafood as its name implies so be sure to visit with that in mind. As with so many places, the appetizers and desserts are the most noteworthy, the main dishes are only so-so. I base that comment on several visits over the past few years, but I waited for a recent visit to write this review to make sure that perception still applies. It does. On my last visit (earlier this week), I started with a nice soup (see photo). It was tasty and the portion generous. I followed with the vegetarian option (the Acorn Squash Ravioli with White Asparagus). I ended up leaving about half of this and had to pick through it (which is something I hate to do) as it wasn't very tasty. This was a disappointment. The dessert, on the other hand, was fabulous. I got the chocolate pudding/cream (see photo) and was very happy with it. Finally experienced Oceanique on Thanksgiving eve! My mother, stepfather and 2 year old joined us for dinner. The toddler had the most delicious chocolate pot de creme, and as he worked his way through it, we ordered wine, enjoyed lovely little bites of ceviche, the day boat scallops and a side of well-executed "white boy" kimchi, and then our mains. It was Wednesday so lobster was the special. My mother ordered it and it was the most beautiful presentation of lobster and so delicious. My stepfather ordered halibut and husband ordered swordfish, both were great, but not nearly as incredible as my bouillabaisse. The bouillabaisse will be etched in my memory for a long time. Complex broth and perfectly cooked seafood, topped with a small piece of toast and saffron aioli. You have to try the bouillabaisse! I forgot about the pallette cleansing sorbet before the mains. We had room for just one dessert which we took to go as the 2 yr old was running out of steam.
