I had the pleasure of dining at Shallots Bistro while in Chicago on buainess. I was with a colleague who is Kosher, and several other friends had recommended Shallots. The menu is complete with options for just about anyone, and we tried a little of everything! The Grazing Platter is an excellent place to start, and the Carpaccio with Arugula is spectacular. We had some sushi as well, and it was very well done. The hero of the evening was the Surprise Steak! Unbelievable!!! Our server was very attentive and gave excellent recommendations! And the restaurant is well decorated and comfortable. Definitely worth the drive from downtown, and I will be recommending Shallots to anyone who keeps Kosher, along with anyone that desires a tremendous dining experience! Well done!!! read more

I have no idea why anyone would give this place one star. We went this afternoon for lunch and the food was delicious. We had the Branzino which was tasty and plentiful. In fact, I took half of it home for another meal. We split the dessert - chocolate chip cookie with ice cream (pareve) and chocolate sauce - to die for. The waitress, Olga, was more than pleasant, she was competent and friendly and it was a pleasure to be her customer. The restaurant was beautiful and the booths are very private and comfortable. After hearing about Shallots for years, I finally made it down for dinner--and let me tell you, it was worth the wait. They graciously accommodated my last-minute reservation. As I walked into the dining room the most amazing smells were wafting from the kitchen. I kicked things off with the Double Dragon sushi roll, a solid 10/10. Hands down, the best kosher sushi in Chicago. The burger was amazing too, with sauces and toppings that were like daaammn. The chicken tenders and fries? A thumbs-up the next day from a very picky eater. The wine selection and cocktail menu were equally impressive. Big shoutout to Justin for the great service! Due to unforseen circumstances we could not complete our last day of vacation ritual of "linner" at L Woods (restaurant in Lincolnwood & direct competition to this Bistro). So, in a hurry, this was our next option. Never been, but decided on it just because they had available seating and it was on the path towards ORD. For the money spent, cannot believe the low quality. The waiter was alright. The food was not worth the costs/ spend. I would have rather spent that money at L Woods, Mantra, any seafood boiler restaurant, etc I think you get the picture. If I'm going to spend $$$$ monies, the food and experience should be worth it. Why? Chicken tenders were stringy and more dry than juicy. The kids weren't thrilled being forced to eat them. The meat soup (some concoction with ground beef) was as my old man put it, "very salty." He said this boldly to me while shaking his head. The head shaking signifies, he ate it because I ordered it. Otherwise, he hated it. The brisket sandwiches for the men were a bore. Management should consider putting an Angus patty on there. I have had better brisket at common BBQ joints. And $25 for loaded hand cut fries.. What TF was I thinking.. Ugh. I could keep going but why bother. Paid enough to help them keep utility bills paid. The interior looks like a restaurant wanting to be a fine dining bistro. #Poser The execution is the problem. Food is meh.. So many problems and the menu costs are outrageously overpriced. I doubt I could/ would ever return. Also why don't they have a manager making rounds inquiring with customers to check on their satisfaction. That's what fine dining establishments do.. Joel G. I arrived to meet some new friends for valentines day. The ambiance was so lovely, dim lights and the seating was very appropriate with the covid guidelines. Also this is a kosher restaurant which was super cool. We immediately were seated and asked for our drink orders. I ordered the lemon drop super delicious. Our waiter was also very patient with us because we were in such deep conversation and he allowed us to talk and was patient when we took a little longer to decide on our orders. We all ordered steaks, some came with asparagus, shallots, and mashed potatoes. A man came around and gave each of us a rose!!!! That was the sweetest gesture because we were 3 ladies out on valentines day with no male dates lol. Now to the steaks, They were BIG 10oz & very dense lol. I had mine cooked medium and it came with asparagus & shallots. We all enjoyed our meals. We got our checks and it comes in one so we just split it 3 ways to make it easier for the waiter. Overall the meal was delicious, drinks were great, and the ambiance is nice. I recommend this restaurant for a nice date night or even a business dinner. read more

Sorry it's been 2 years since I've updated my review, I've been here many times since as its one of my favorite places to dine. This time we were tempted by the special Channukah menu. I must say, though I'm still giving it 5 stars, in the future I'll stick with the regular menu. We started with the turkey soup which we agreed was super delicious, things from there went down hill but then, thankfully uphill. We then tried the trio of latkes: butternut squash, potato, and zucchini- meh. Then the brisket latke tacos which were quite tasty but greasy and messy and I'd rather just eat a deconstructed version of those. The sufganyot, well, what could be bad! We ate in an enclosed tent which we'd have been leary of but we were the only ones in there (went for a very early lunch). We had a heater at each side of the table and were quite comfortable. As usual, our server was very good. Please continue to supporting our kosher restaurants through these tough times and always. read more

How is this place still open. This is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. I have begrudgingly eaten here multiple times and it somehow tops itself by getting worse every time. Crazy expensive for mediocre food and horrible service. Paint peeling from the walls, dust all over the chandeliers, the booths are falling apart. I don't think this place can even be saved. Had to move from a booth to a table because of the ants. Then had to deal with the knats at the table. Came here for my daughter's birthday and they brought mine and my wife's food out 30 minutes before they brought out my kids food. My son ordered asparagus and the removed the tops, your supposed to cut off the bottom of the asparagus not the tops, the tops are the best part. Like an old sick dog this restaurant needs to be taken out back and put down. If I could give it negative stars I would. read more

Our sever was very nice. However, the food was terrible. Our food was overcooked, dry and salty. If I didn't have a glass of water, I might have choked on the hockey puck of food they served. The place is Kosher, I get that the choices may be a tad limited if that's what you are looking for; but for the price range (appetizers averaged $20+, entrees averaged $50s++, with a burger at $25). Server was nice, but did not ask why we only took a couple of bites of our entree and did not want the rest to go, he seemed uncomfortable and didn't want to deal with it. By the way, they automatically add 20% tip. It was only two of us.. Overall, pick another place, not recommended at all for food. read more

So sad. The menu sounded delicious, but the food was very disappointing. Other reviewers call this a fine dining establishment, I suppose because of the prices. But there is nothing fine happening here. The rolls were meh. I asked for butter and was told they only have margarine and then they brought an orange mayonnaise like substance and a brown sauce. We were never able to determine what these dips were. They were not margarine. People, please stop referring to this restaurant as fine dining. I ordered the California roll, which was a little heavy on the rice but OK overall. My son and I had the chicken rice soup, and were told the cup was $8 and the bowl was $10. So he got the cup and I got the bowl. They both appeared to be the same volume. When the bill arrived the prices were $9 and $12. My son ordered the salmon which was served completely raw. He did not order the sushi but rather the regular salmon dinner. It was raw. Husband ordered the chicken piccata. He said it was bland and tasted more like a kids meal. In their defense they did comp the salmon and the sushi which ended up taking $49 off the bill so we walked out of there paying less than $100. But beware, their prices are astronomical and they do add 20% to the bill without any questions. We were only a party of three so I had never seen that for a party of three. read more

Food is delicious but highway Robbery! I ordered one appetizer to go and picked up a dry chicken skewer appetizer with a few sauces on the side and paid $26. I know kosher food is expensive, but I think it's pushing it. On the plus side, they do offer kosher sushi which was delicious, but, again, prices were outrageous. read more

If you are kosher, then this is the place for you. If not, to be honest the food is no better than say a Jameson's Charhouse. Certainly not worth the price of Ruth Chris. We had Two of the steaks, mine had way too much peppercorns and the sauce ruined the flavor. The hamburger was OK but double the price it should be. The Sushi was good, but again at double the price. Service was outstanding. It was our anniversary and they not only charged us for the small piece of anniversary cake, they charged $3.00 for the sparkler in the cake. Very old school steak house. Expect an insanely good steak, for dinner the horseradish laced steak sauce is a worthy excuse to ever put steak sauce on your steak. The appetizers and sides are straightforward, but well made. The wine list is a little limiting, but there were a couple reasonable options. You can't go wrong with a martini to start though. Overall, if you are expecting straight forward, high quality food that doesn't pretend to be more that what it is, you're in for a treat. Making a reservation can be tough. They are high volume, but you can't really feel it during service. You do however feel it when trying to contact the restaurant over the phone. Call as far ahead of time as possible. I was only able to get a 9:45pm reservation and told that it wouldn't be possible to come in earlier. When we arrived 15 min before our reservation there were several empty tables. Not making any promises, but I feel like you can probably arrive much before a late res and still get sat. read more

I am not one to normally leave a lousy review, especially when it comes to a kosher restaurant as I hate to detract business. Unfortunately this time I could not help myself. I was under the impression that I was attending a meal at a fantastic kosher bistro; however, the food quality was nothing of the like. It was more resemblant of a candy store. I ordered various rolls of sushi only to be served a portion of mediocre fish with a glutton of sugar. I could not even stomach finishing the meal. The sushi had this unexpected (and unenjoyable) sweet taste. I did not order a sweet roll, I wanted to vomit. Additionally, I ordered multiple steak dishes (NOT CHEAP!) that had the same unwanted sugary flavor. It was extremely unenjoyable and tasted like candy. This restaurant was recommended to me by various friends, I am considering blocking their numbers. This was one of the worst kosher meals I have had in my entire life. The waiter was rude and smelt of raw onion on a hot summer day. I went home and devoured a savory juicy salami that I purchased from the Romanian kosher deli. I then proceeded to vomit why tasted like sweet and low packets. read more

Some of the best food chicago has to offer, they treat all of the patrons as if they owned the restaurant. From the greater to the Meterdei the waiters and manager. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and delectable. The brisket flatbreads were delicious, and a very generous portion size. I always have fantastic food at this restaurant. It really is flavorful and delicious. I enjoy the front area with a smaller menu with burgers and sushi. It's still a bit pricy though. A beer, sand which, sushi, and bowl of soup will cost you $60 including a tip. In the restaurant side, I love the steaks, however I remember Steak Diane was $30-35 when I went, then they took it off the menu, and then when they put it back on the menu is was listed under specials for $60 or something. That's quite the price hike. So, instead of making this a regular restaurant, we only go twice a year. read more

Shallots Bistro - Spicy Tuna Roll - Kosher Near Me - Skokie, Illinois

When it comes to upscale Kosher in Chicago, there aren't many choices. Luckily, Shallots does a very good job of filling this need. I've dined at many different Kosher restaurants across the country, ranging from smaller delis to high-end steakhouses. Shallots fits more in the latter, but also provides a little bit of the former, with their bar menu. Seating in the bar area is a bit limited, but you can order off of any menu, including their bar menu, which has wings, burgers and sandwiches. The Grand Burger is a personal favorite of mine. It features a half pound of beef, a BBQ sauce that makes me wish drinking condiments was socially acceptable and crisped up pastrami. Make sure to ask them to crisp it or slice it thin; when it's thick, it can be a bit chewy. Their dinner menu has a wide range of items including fish, chicken, veal and beef. As for their steaks, I'd recommend the Bordelaise or the Chef's Special. One is a ribeye with a rich sauce and the other is a leaner cut. Depending on what you want, those are two great options. They also have a Signature Steak menu, which is a higher grade beef and tends to be very rich in flavor and price. Oh, they also have ribs. They are also slathered in the BBQ sauce I mentioned earlier. Did I mention I'd bathe in that stuff, if I could? They also have a wonderful sushi menu. This is one of the biggest pluses to the restaurant. Finding great Kosher sushi can be tough, but they do an excellent job with it. I go by at least once a week for sushi there and never get bored of it. The sushi chef will also create items around your likes, which keeps it fresh. I'm probably the wrong person to ask about desserts, as this is one of the few places I get them, but they're usually good. There's always a few that stick out. They have a peanut butter and chocolate pie right now that I'd either drink or bathe in, I'm not sure which one yet! Also, since this is a Kosher meat restaurant, there's no dairy products on premises, which is a huge plus for anyone who is allergic! Don't get me wrong, they don't always get it right the first time. My wife, friends and I have had dishes that were less than spectacular before, but the staff there has always noticed and remedied it for us. My Kosher friends and non-Kosher friends continually ask to go back with me. I'd like to think it's simply for my incredible personality and charm, but I'm also assuming they're not complete gluttons for punishment and really do enjoy the place! read more

Went here tonight for sushi & sandwiches. We placed our order; two simple makimoto rolls and the sandwiches, one broiled salmon and one California Wrap. Twenty minutes later, the waiter, who was very good, came and told us that there would be another 15-20 minute wait for the sushi. I said to cancel the sushi and please bring the sandwiches. After another 20 minutes, the food arrived. The plate containing my wife's salmon was extremely hot, as if it had been held under the infrared lamps for a while. My California wrap was very good and I always enjoy their french (Belgian) fried potatoes. Desserts are custom-made. They take a while to appear. My impression was the place was very understaffed tonight in the kitchen and the sushi bar. Unacceptable for an expensive joint like this one. Methinks the owner, who is not a restaurateur, ought to hire some people who know how to run a restaurant. Oddly enough, he has some working there who do know. Our "foodie" son-in-law recently dined with us at Shallots and was not let down. First, we dined in the back of the restaurant which I found to be enjoyably semi-private. Our appetizers were blue fin tuna timbale and Ecuadorian fish ceviche. Wow! Great taste and plentiful. For entrees, we continued to go heart friendly with herb white-wine chicken and a daunting portion of the samurai chicken sword. Highly recommend both. Though no room for dessert, we were glad that didn't stop us when we heard about the coconut curd lion dessert. It's been days, but I'm still full writing this review! The Food at Shallots is consistently very good. Steak was made to perfection- We got the STEAK BORDELAISE (cheapest one on the menu but still overpriced) and the 7oz Chef's Special which was outstanding. Shallot's continues to be a little too expensive - even tho it is Kosher and therefore without much competition; but for special occasions is worthwhile. CONS: 1. Sushi Chef that made the most INCREDIBLE sushi is no longer there and what they served was very poor substitute, so would avoid it. 2. For such an elegant place, why do they have to nickel and dime you: Automatic 20% tip!- They started doing this in other places too (at least in Florida) and it encourages lousy service...And then they ask if you want to give more! I wonder if it's OK to lower that amount if the service isn't good? (Ours was not great that night). Also we were celebrating a birthday and asked for a desert. We saw others had a cool sparkler in theirs so assumed that was part of it. It was- but they added $3.oo to the bill!! That's pretty lame.
