I brought my children in the other day and was disappointed in how the staff was talking to a customer. A woman with tattoos was chatting with a man with a superman hat. Not sure if he was her boyfriend or not but their conversation was not suitable for young ears. She also paid more attention to the man than us who actually required her assistance. Their fish and plants are healthy, the tanks are clean, and the people working there are very knowledgeable about all things fish keeping. Although I really like this place last time I came in was extremely disappointing. The snails were all eating each other in the tanks. A beautiful light footed, magenta mystery snail was being killed by other species. Someone bred that gorgeous creature and if I could've taken her home I would've. The last snail I bought here had vorticella attached to its shell and ended up having to be treated due to its tank mates. Was also told by a gentlemen they give credit for bringing in your unwanted aquatics but was not given that by the ladies at the desk. I guess this is just a fair warning to others to treat your new additions before entry to your tanks. An to ask the store to better care for the snails in general. The credit stuff probably doesn't happen often so I understand why not everyone's on the same page. Will still return here as their selections are very nice. read more

It's been along time since I've been here, I heard there's been a change of ownership. Whatever has happen its for the better. It's a large store and packed with all types of saltwater live stock and dry goods. It's has fresh water and other stuff, it's just not my interest so I didn't look at that stuff. They have a large variety of saltwater fish, inverts and allot of corals. Tons and tons of different types of coral, I was truly impressed. I was really not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. It still could use some work, cleaning and organizing, but for the most part I will come back to look for coral here. The pricing seems a tad on the high side, but if they can justify it by cleaning up I think I can accept to pay a little more. read more

We were thinking about getting a fish tank instead of having furry animals that shed all over the place. Oceans and Seas was the first place we looked. (Because buying fish as pets in the same place where you buy fish as food is never a good idea. The fish are upset by it.) Though they don't look like much from the outside, they really have a large selection of all kinds of fish and sea creatures in this place. And I've never really been one to do "the fish thing" beyond having a goldfish as a kid, and it was really strange seeing stuff in real life that I'd only seen on television - a starfish, for example. It may not be exciting to you, but having never seen one before, it was pretty sweet. The guy was pretty helpful when we had a million questions. Turns out that we severely underestimated the maintenance that the fish we wanted required. (So... you're telling me that I have to regulate temperature, water pH levels, while running the bubbles and cleaning the tank? I'll stick to the shedding!) So I guess this review is here for the simple fact that they have an awesome selection, and a very helpful staff. If we were to have purchased some of the fish we liked there, I have no doubt that I would've had a great deal of support from Oceans and Seas in keeping them healthy and happy in our home. read more

I used to love this store 8 years ago when I had a 55 gallon tank to fill up. Just recently I got another tank and went to check out their selection. I have to say that the man who helped us was very friendly (talked a little too much and about irrelevant subjects) but he steered us wrong when asked if the fish we were purchasing would all "get along". Ended up costing almost forty dollars for the fish that fell victim and they wouldn't replace them when I returned the offenders. Aside from that be careful and check every fish for diseases before picking from a tank. I saw multiple tanks with fish who have ICK. I have freshwater, so I'm not sure about the conditions of the saltwater fish. read more

A tale of two cities this one is. I visited this place during the week and received zero service I visited this place about a month later and made two trips back because of pricing and service. The staff on my last visit was knowledgeable and helpful. Overall the place is decent. I didn't see any sick or dead fish which is more that I can say about some of the other places I've visited. They have a great selection of substrate and rocks galore. I think this place has the best driftwood in metro Detroit. The fresh water fish selection could use a bump. I have visited almost every single fish store in this area, and this store has to be the worst one I've seen. As noted before, they have great selection and I won't deny that, but a good selection means nothing when the fish are sick and dying. I counted precisely 14 dead fish in the store, some of which appeared to have been dead for days. Others were extremely sick, like a polleni grouper with a huge, presumably painful, air/fluid bubble underneath the skin of its eye, a group of oscars covered in hundreds of ich spots, and a guttatus tang suffering simultaneously from a velvet infestation and a bacterial infection. Now, I know some fish die and sickness runs rampant in newly imported fish, and I'm not saying that this is the only store that has to deal with it. My problem is that it takes 5 minutes to comb over the store removing dead fish every morning and a few seconds to scoop one out that dies during the day and this store can't seem to find the time to do that. They also have no interest in treating sick fish either, as evidenced by the dozens of obviously sick ones. Despite the poor conditions these fish are kept in, I saw a couple neon gobies that I liked and was interested in. One had a little bit of fin rot, but if they were a decent price, I figured that the few days in antibiotics that it would take to treat him would be worth it. So I tried to find an employee to help me, since the price wasn't labeled on the tank, but I couldn't find one that wasn't busy. So I waited for a few minutes, making sure to make eye contact with anyone who looked like an employee so they would ask if I needed anything, but that didn't happen. I finally approached an employee and asked how much the neon gobies cost. He said "I don't know that, but I'm getting fish for someone so please wait." in a not-so-nice tone. I watched him for a minute, and all he did was follow a lady around the store while she looked at the fish trying to figure out which ones she wanted. In my opinion, it wouldn't have killed him to take 15 seconds to look up the price, or to ask another employee really quick. I'm actually glad he was rude to me though, because now I realize how stupid it would have been to support a business that treats their animals and customers that way. read more

Wow what a place to check out sea life! Purchased a fish tank for my son and the staff here was AMAZING!

The people that work here treat you like family. They always answer questions. They will let you buy what you want, but if you ask them they will steer you away from buying incompatible livestock, or sketchy equipment. It looks like they have been making small steps on upgrading the interior, which is good since it could really use it. I don't fully get the fairy garden area, or the ornament sections, but that's just me. There's a reason this place has been around as long as it has. read more

I went in to speak to someone regarding what clearly appeared to me to be a sick betta fish, which I bought there. I told the woman there what symptoms my fish had, her behavior previously, and the fact that I checked the water for pH and ammonia. She proceeded to tell me that there was noting wrong with my fish, that bettas are just lazy fish. I told her that everything I read up on them states the opposite. She insisted that isn't true that they are just lazy fish and recommended I purchase another fish to get it riled up and it will chase it around the tank! My betta died 2 days later. read more

They have an amazing selection and great prices. If you do your homework and can tell the staff what you have and what you're looking for, they'll prevent you from buying things that sound cool, but won't work out. If you go there regularly, you'll notice that a LOT of people are regulars there. I always see the staff carrying things out to peoples' cars. They treat everyone like old friends and seem to enjoy telling you anything you want to know about the hobby. It's best to show up on delivery days. That way you get to see and choose from all the cool stuff that comes in, but gets snapped up right away. They're mostly fish, but have a pretty decent reptile selection as well. I even have my friends bring their kids up there just so they can marvel at all the cool stuff. They're always excited to see Nemo and Dori. read more
