Great locally owned establishment. They take good care of their animals, they keep a variety of reasonably priced products for any animal genre. Just visiting is like going to a small zoo. Over the years they've had giant fish, snapping turtles, tortoises, pythons, giant rabbits, lizards, chameleons, and even a ring tailed Lemur. The less ornery ones even wander the shop. I enjoy asking the tortoise questions about aquarium equipment like hes a helpful employee. Just watch out buying aquarium plants, theyre healthy, but you might have some snail stragglers. This shop was recommended by my daughters 3rd grade teacher so we checked it out. It is awesome. They have tons of stuff you can touch - mostly everything is for sale. There is a tortoise wandering around, a big hare hopping about, and a bird who sings. A big iguana was above the rats hanging out. My kids held little hamsters and the bird. This is a decent pet shop but not the best care. if your wondering why I gave a two star review this is why. A couple weeks ago I adopted a hamster from them, they claim to have the "friendliness syrian hamsters" not true, as the women was picking it out for me it was hissing and very agressive. I was also informed this hamster was only 4 WEEKS OLD. If you know anything about hamsters they should be rehomed at 6 weeks of age minimum . (Any sooner can cause problems for the babies) 2nd the care sheets are horrible. It stats 10 gallon minimum. Not only is this far from true but disgusting information to be spreading to younger children. Hamsters need atleast a 40 gallon minimum, six inches of bedding, lot of enrichment, a proper diet, and much more. I'm glad to see they Breed they're own If your going to adopt from them make sure you do your research. And it's always better to get a hamster from a ethical breeder or one in need of being rehomed. Hamsters are not a beginner pet or suitable for children! read more

Had some time to kill so I went to a few pet shops and this one was close by so I had to check it out. It was a little confusing to find their own parking lot. I don't think they do so I parked right next to the building and paid a meter. I went in for some snake supplies which wasn't a big selection but I did get some wood pieces to add to my snakes tank. They had a nice selection of animals and it looks like they're well taken care of. I enjoyed walking around and looking at all the pets. read more

I absolutely love this place. Full disclosure - I've never bought a single thing from here. But, that's part of the appeal. There is no expectation of you making a purchase when you walk through their doors. I have a toddler, and I take her there periodically to check the store out. She enjoys getting to walk around, looking at bunnies, and even petting a turtle or bunny that might be waddling or hopping around the store. For people like us, who do not want to have a pet hamster or a pet rat, it's so awesome that we can take our daughter here and she can still get exposure and have experiences with these animals. In fact, the last time we were there, it was feeding time for the turtles and bunnies. All of the kids who were there at that time were given carrots, and were allowed to hand feed the animals. There is not a better pet store anywhere! The staff and owner are caring and accommodating. I have bought numerous (12?) pets for my grandchildren as well as all of my pet food. I can't say enough. The kids can visit and hold the animals, Flemish Giant Rabbits roam the store along with turtles, Georgio the bird is perched in the store where you can talk to him and hold him. My boyfriend found this pet shop thru his university (the animal dept. works with this pet shop) He surprised me with a visit on Valentine's Day to look at hamsters and we walked away with a hamster and Netherlands dwarf bunny. The pet shop is like no other one I have been to. Everyone who works there is really friendly & very knowledgeable. We ended up getting the bunny and hamster a few days later and they had no problems taking the money over the phone and holding them for a few days. This place is pretty cool. It's the only pet shop in Grosse Pointe that isn't a chain. They have all kinds of different critters, tanks, terrariums, food, and toys. We come here to get our crickets for our tree frog. Usually, the cashiers are very friendly. My only complaint about this place is this one lady who is older and hand counts the crickets one by one and is not very polite. I still come here because it's at the end of my street and I have a busy schedule. I work on Mack and just swing by sometimes when my brother is busy. We have also bought a "gently used" terrarium and it was really cheap and lasted us a while until we decide to upgrade to a larger one. This is definitely a really cool place to bring kids. Lou's is fantastic - it's not large (although the new location is about 3 times as big as their old one), but they cram in a huge amount of well priced, high-quality stuff. It's my go-to place for the hard to find Orijen dog food (and several dollars cheaper for the regional red formula than another nearby place that carries it). While I'm normally anti-pet store that sells animals, they are well kept and the "holdable" animals are well socialized. It takes every bit of willpower to not end up with more rats every time we go there. They've got a ring-tailed lemur on an education loan that is fascinating to watch, along with the "resident" animals - a huge turtle and a parrot that have free roam of the store. read more

Seriously awesome pet shop. If you love animals, especially slightly unusual ones, and you love small local places, then you should come here. First thing to notice when you walk in is ____, the wandering tortoise doing laps around the whole store, whose name I have now forgotten. He's extremely fit and his physique is most impressive, garnering the attention of all the females. Secondly, you'll notice the large aquatic display in the righthand corner, filled with enormous catfish and skates. Go deeper and you'll find a very large enclosure with a ringtailed lemur inside! A very large red tail boa resides here as well. These are the store pets and are not for sale, but they just speak to how much the staff love and care about animals. When I was in a week ago, they had a chameleon and a ball python for sale, along with many different geckos, an axolotl, all sorts of fishes, a sugar glider, many many birds, and many small fluffy things. I was seriously impressed with the array of animals they have here. They don't have quite the enormous selection of foods or play/living structures that Petco or Petsmart have, but instead they seem to go for quality and interestingness over quantity. Great place. I've been going to Lou's ever since I can remember. Now that I spend my own money and can drive myself there, I often find myself heading up to Lou's just because I'm bored. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Because I frequent the shop, I've come to be very familiar with them and they usually know exactly what I need. As for the store, it is jam packed full of everything you could possibly need. And if they don't have it, they'll gladly order it for you. They have an awesome collection of reptiles, arachnids, birds, rodents, as well as many exotics you won't see anywhere else. When I visit other pet stores, I'm always very critical of the way they keep their animals. Lou's does an amazing job making sure the cages are clean and well maintained with food/water. I must also note that they breed many of their animals in house or purchase them from local and reputable breeders. To me, this shows that they are against wild caught animals (which we all should be) and care about the quality and health of the animals they sell. I would choose Lou's over a big box pet store any day. And you should, too! read more

Just moved from the bay area (cali) and was in need of pinky mice for my hognose snake. Came to Lou's pet shop and was pleasantly surprised. The place is clean, doesn't smell like animals live there, and all the animals cages are well kept after meaning clean water, clean glass, clean substrates and no left over or rotting foods. There were kids all over the shop playing with the animals and feeding the resident tortoise. I think the thing that surprised and pleased me the most was the setup they had for their betta fish. The cups were on some sort of specialized shelf so the water in the bowls was refreshed/not stagnant. The fish all looked lively and healthy which is a far cry from betta fish awaiting sale in most other pet shops. The guy running the shop was super helpful and cheerful and made sure I was happy with the size of the mice he picked. When I realized I had asked for a size too large, he gladly went back to the freezer and picked me out slightly smaller perfectly sized pinkies. Coming in was a pleasure and I look forward to going back when I'm ready to buy another reptile or fish. Oh also, the prices were very reasonable! read more

I got a couple of gerbils when I turned 13 from my sister's then boyfriend...guess he wanted me to learn about the birds and the bees...Completely naive at the time, I called my mom and dad into my room one night to watch the gerbils doing a funny dance. "Dad, look (laughing) they're doing the disco!" my dad "Um, they aren't dancing. Expect babies". So anyway, I was able to sell gerbil babies to Lou's for $.50 each. Not a fan. Got a leopard gecko here two weeks ago as a pet for my 7yo daughter. Was told they are easy to care for and good pets for kids. Went back several times in these two weeks with questions and when the gecko showed signs of being seriously ill. Was told to take the gecko to a vet, which we did. Again, went back to Lou's looking for help in nursing the gecko back to health and was told the owner would contact me but never heard from him. The teenagers who work there don't have a clue. The gecko unfortunately passed away tonight. My daughter is heartbroken. I feel that I was sold a sickly pet and they were unhelpful and not knowledgeable every time we went in. read more

Do not buy fish from here. Ever. Many are diseased and will infect your whole tank. Ich infestations from their lousy sick fish have hit my kids tank twice in 2 years. Never again. Goto Petsmart in the hill. Much better. read more
