I was told about this family run farm out in Canal while Ana dinner gathering last week. I can even begin to express how to say it... GET HERE NOW! Sweet tomatoes the size of marbles. Some that were no bigger than a crabapple tree berry. Some the size of my palm. They sell 250+ varieties right here in central Ohio. Can you beat that? Amongst the other succulent tomatoes I bought, I got what resemble tiny tomatillos (in the night shade family); you have to tear away the thin "paper shell". They LITERALLY taste like tropical fruit juice. I kid you not. I met David today, and he's a friendly, knowledgeable gentleman. Him and the co-owner, Joe, sell at a few markets around town, so if you don't catch them at one of those, make the trek southeast. No really. Do it.

The friendly vendor had some great little lids to put on top so that all of the berries stayed put during the rest of our stroll around the market and journey home. The berries are sweet and juicy, with a great texture. The vendor was very friendly, and we enjoyed a quick chat with her.

They have a lots of stand that sells fruits, vegetables, meats, bakeries also wine testing (only on saturday). All the stuff there are fresh & organic also local, that is why I like it there but I was dissapointed on their sweet corns & cantalopes. My favorite are: * bread stands : herb & cheese bread $5 (if you can not find this stands in the market, you can go to Avalance pizza to get it) * Kettle corn : they have 2 flavor; caramel (small $5, large $9) & regular (small $4 , large $7) but actually their regular is mix with a little bit caramel popcorn so you get sweet & salty flavor. * Bone in pork chop ($5/ pack = 2 pork chop) : I forgot their store name (located a cross from kettle corn) (if you use food stamps & you spent more than $10, he will give you $10 tokens that you can spend on fruits & vegetables at any stands) * jackie O's : molasses cookie

It's located inside and outside The Market on State Mall so the positive part of the location is that they can move indoors when the weather turns yucky. The Athens Farmers market is year-round that runs Saturdays 9a-12p and Wednesday's (April through December) 9a-1p. With over 50 vendors, there is literally something for everyone. Some notable highlights: gorgeous state jewelry by Amanda Buchanan. I started holiday shopping early and snagged a few as stocking stuffers. I was blown away by some gorgeous pottery by Sledding Hill. Loved some tshirts and the concept behind It's Still Today. Tasted an abundance of salsa from Southwestern Style Salsa, they literally don't limit you or make you feel bad at all (which is great cause we ended up grabbing a few jars). Grabbed some jam from Fisher Farms and chips from Shagbark. I got the chance to meet the sweet daughters of Sarah's Sweets. Truly delightful girls who are so proud of their mom. You guys already know how much I love my sweets but what you might not know is that my favorite candy is fudge. I LOVE fudge so much and Sarah has a huge selection to choose from (more than 20) and it was SO YUMMY! And the flowers, swoon, the flowers at this market were just beautiful. I came home with two stunning bouquets.

In fact, just this morning we walked down and bought some fresh-picked blackberries. By this afternoon we had made them into a delicious pie. I win. All that being said, the selection isn't all that it could be. Canal is located very close to a number of working farms. However, the market only boasts five fruit and veggie stands. The folks selling locally raised meat haven't been around lately. There is a great bread stand courtesy Great Harvest Bakery, but that's pretty corporate. There are a few too many stands with things like Tupperware and knick-knacks. The farmer's market is open every Saturday morning through mid-October. Until August 27, it's open on Wednesday nights too.

I purchased the Peanut Butter Cup, but I easily saw myself emptying my pockets to buy everything else I tasted. We stopped by Sarah's Sweets, where I tried various chocolates. The real winner to me was the coconut. Very sweet, but a dream for coconut fans. Another great spot was Allison's Challah, who sells Traditional Jewish Bread. It was flavored with honey and I can just see myself trying all kinds of combinations with it. Even though it was the final day of the season, I was delighted to learn that they will begin the "winter season" market, next door, next Thursday (Oct. 5)! Being the first one for the season, I'm sure it should have full attendance from the vendors so I'll be back and will let you know what I thought.
