Having been to Ocracoke many times, this was the first time we had a significant problem with both the house and the realty group. We had numerous problems with the house, one of which was a non-working toilet that they said they knew about and just assumed it had been fixed. A part was ordered but had not arrived by our departure. Another serious issue was that the house had roaches. They said that is common on the island. I've never seen one during our 6 other stays on the island. I asked the manager if she had roaches at her house and she stuttered and said no. They also said they would call me back and 4 hours later I called them again. They said they tried to call me but I had no missed calls. Then they said the emailed me and there was nothing. They said they spelled my name wrong which makes no sense when I am in their database. So then they emailed me again saying there was an attachment and of course it wasn't there. They tried to give me a gift card for a future stay and I told them no way. They returned a small amount of money which didn't even come close to how much we spent on taxes alone. They have since not returned my emails or texts. I would like to review the house and there is nowhere on the website to do so although they post reviews for each property. read more

The Captain's Inn is WONDERFUL in every way: super clean, spacious and very comfortable. The amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen are fantastic!! The location overlooking the water is AMAZING, beautiful, quiet, and with gorgeous sunsets too! Both living room and bedroom have sliding doors to a huge balcony right over the water! We had a wonderful stay on Ocracoke and rented through Ocracoke Island realty. We had a problem with our power shutting off and the maintenance people answered right away on a Sunday and an electrician was at our house in 10 minutes. We had wonderful meals at the Flying Melon, Howard's, Smacknallys, and Eduardo's, we rented a golf cart from Ocracoke island carts-we had a fabulous week on a beautiful island! read more

We have used OIR over the years and was really disappointed this time around. Arrived late Sunday night to discover not all the sheets were delivered. The kids had to sleep on blankets they packed for the trip. I left a message, nobody ever called me back that evening or the next morning. Swung by the front office and the ladies behind the desk are not very inviting or pleasant. Yes, they received my message and yes sheets would be delivered later that day. A little customer service goes a long way. This is our 5th trip to the island. We will look at other agencies in the future. read more

i just got through with a rental with Ocracoke Island Reality and sent serval emails to rate the cottage I rented but they do not reply to any email. I think once they have your money, the hell with you! The rental had large roaches and ants thoughout the house. I would not advise renting through this agency since they don't respond to your request! read more

Horrible customer service. Rented for numerous weeks, and the service was awful!! Two days into first house rental the AC on the main floor goes out; the AC company came quickly and said the house needed whole new unit, which we only found out about as we were at the house. Nobody from reality office ever called. After numerous calls to after hours maintenance (because nobody called us back during business hours) they finally brought 3 window units to keep main floor bearable. Never once thru the other two weeks did we hear from the reality company on the plan for the house AC. Window AC units made both porches unusable with noise and heat from them. After a few weeks in one house; moving to second house was horrible experience. No regard to keeping food or animals cool, kicked out of first house at 10am and waited hours for next house to be available. Not one offer to allow us to stay longer at first house; told numerous times check out was 10am. New house was cleaned early, and they weren't able to let us into new house for hours later. Total disregard for any customer service. Will not spend 20k a summer with this company again. read more

I have been dealing with OIR for years. Their staff and policies are better than most that I've dealt with over decades of travel. I always get the travel insurance and in the 26 years I've been going to the OBX I've only needed it once. The insurance is provided by an outside insurance company and not the realty company. You deal directly with the insurance company in the event of a mandatory evacuation. And the only days covered are those effected by the mandatory evacuation. It doesn't make sense to also be paid for the days you were able to come back and stay. OIR is very responsive to your needs before and during your stay. I appreciate their great customer service. read more

Not very happy with the changes in policy... It was bad enough when they increased the deposit amount a couple of years ago to reserve a house, now they effectively want 50% of the week's rental up front. So you just wrap up your vacation, having spent thousands and in order to reserve your house for next year, which you really have to do right away, you have to pay 50% of the weekly rate to reserve the house, which in our case amounts to a couple of thousand dollars for two weeks! Very unreasonable to say the least. Furthermore, my wife informed me when she called OIR to reserve our house for the following year during the same period, OIR said it was rented. So OIR rented the house out from under us for the for the first week for the following year WHILE WE WERE STILL IN THE HOUSE - we were supposed to have first priority! Never mind guranteed check in has been pushed back until 5 o'clock. Here is the policy taken straight from their website.... "You've Made Your Vacation Property Choice: Whether you make your reservation through our reservation department or book online, your advance rental payment of 50% of the total rental amount (plus Trip Insurance if elected) is due at time of reservation. " https://www.ocracokeislandrealty.com/rental-policies While I appreciate the need to get a commitment from a guest, a 50% deposit a year advance and effectively as soon as a guest concludes their vacation, that is if they want to stay in the same house, is excessive and unreasonable. I just do not have enough good things to say about Ocracoke Island Realty! These ladies are incredible and we will never use another realty co when visiting our favorite vacation town again ! For years we've been happy customers of theirs and this year when we were looking for homes a few months prior to vacation; we had a larger group than usual and were having a hard time finding availability. We were bummed but eventually found a home with what I'll call "the other realty" company and while pictures showed there were no updates since the Golden Girls aired, there was enough space and it was by the Bay. Then upon arrival we find out there were many more issues than just the outdated decor and gloomy interior. That was the least of our concerns. When we went into the center to ask about other availability; instead of telling us "no, were booked politely" even though we saw openings elsewhere that they had, we were insulted and berated IMMEDIATELY and told to leave. We did get a refund but it was humiliating. I'm an Operations Manager for a large bank and I understand good customer service and this was TERRIBLE. I left in tears and went to Ocracoke Island Realty and not only did they have cancellations, they were cheaper and much better than anything offered by the other company! Most of all-they were kind and welcoming. They worked with us in such short notice for an hour. My family of 5 was left with no where to stay because I made a simple request and this company came to our rescue. I know we are in good hands and am so grateful for knowing who to contact through this experience. read more

I've been renting through Ocracoke Island Realty for 20 years and never had a bad experience until this summer. We rented a two-bedroom condo at Lighthouse Villas #2. The photos and the bright yellow walls were attractive, but the loveliness was only a surface veneer. Small problems first: 1) one of the ceiling fans was missing a blade, so it was unusable; 2) the internet access was finicky and there are no streaming services, so bring your Firestick; 3) the blankets are badly worn, very badly stained and should have been replaced 10 years ago; 4) instead of a garbage can with lid in the kitchen, you get to throw your trash into a large, open flower pot. The big problem is that the condo DOES NOT SLEEP SIX as advertised. The queen beds in the bedrooms are fine, but the sleeper sofa is barely a couch and definitely not a sleeper. The mattress is about 3 inches thick and so badly stained that I didn't want to lay on it. When I did, the frame sunk down about a foot and I couldn't count the number of springs poking into me. Even just sitting on the couch was uncomfortable. OIR was able to provide us an air mattress, which I tucked into my friend's bedroom and used for the week. Without that, the vacation would have been a sleeping nightmare. read more

We rented with OIR for several seasons quite happily until 2015 when we rented a truly unacceptable accommodation through them which has since been removed from their offerings. I've written to them a couple of times about our experience and was given a $100 voucher on a future rental (with an expiration date), which we weren't inclined to use since it was as if they were offering a token apology (far less than 10% of our typical rental) in exchange for our spending even more money on their services. In the end, we're left with the impression that they expect a lot from their customers but don't really care about keeping them. We haven't been back to the island since 2015. We go to Chincoteague instead. read more

I was more than satisfied with the staff at Ocracoke Realty. I had to change my reservations several times, and they were courteous, competent, and concerned that they had met my needs thoroughly. I was delayed at Kill Devil Hills for 5 days because of the storm, and because they include trip insurance at a very reasonable rate, I will be reimbursed for those 5 nights. I was on Ocracoke for a month and they were extremely caring and concerned that everything went smoothly during that long term stay. I will definitely rent with them again. read more

Be careful when dealing with these people. They charge you big money for trip insurance. If you are evacuated for a storm event, you are only covered for the evacuation period. In my case I paid for two weeks and was evacuated after two days. The evac was lifted after two days. I was screwed out of $1.5k. They never informed me of this tidbit. Shysters !!! read more

Do *NOT* rent with OIR, they're complete crooks. (Go with Airbnb or VRBO - they actually assist immediately and refund if need be. Also the hotels are great). We reserved a week in the Over the Rainbow house - cost of $3800. Unfortunately Hurricane Florence decided to head towards the outer banks and Ocracoke was evacuated. We were slated to arrive a few days after the hurricane, which we were told the mandatory evacuation still remained in effect. All this is fine. What was not fine, was OIR, along with the landlord, refused to refund our money stating that we did not buy trip insurance. Who the heck covers hurricanes in trip insurance. This is an act from God and should be 100% refunded. Especially since the visitors were not allowed back to the island during our entire stay. This company in unreal and completely unethical, do not use them. Hotels, VRBO and Airbnb ALL refunded our wedding party 100%. We were the only ones that were very unlucky because we mistakenly reserved with OIR. Seriously people, lots of other choices. These people lack human decency. read more
