A disappointing experience given you pay a premium for this property and they don't deliver on the experience. You would think there might have been an adjustment on the bill at check out...but no. If you have important work or timely transactions where you require the internet, be prepared to trudge your lap top over to the main office for internet access.

For a last-minute, impromptu trip we were able to book a room with them for the night. We had 4 adults and one infant and they were one of the only places we could find last minute that would fit all of us. Their apartments were perfect! We stayed in Apt H and it had 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a FULL KITCHEN! This is great for folks who want to make any meals at home and save some $$ on their trip. The rooms were SO MUCH NICER than we had thought they were and I was really surprised at how cute they were decorated (with modern furniture). One of my favorite things about this hotel (aside from the fact that it's owner/operator were BORN on the island!) is the "Game Room". What a great, safe, fun spot for older kids and young teens to hang out. I spent summers on this island and that Game Room would have been AMAZING for me and my siblings when we were there. On top of that, you can rent bikes and golf carts from the hotel at much cheaper prices than any other rental place. They even have baby seats and helmets for kids and infants. The staff was also incredible. They were kind, friendly, helpful, hospitable and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was great. If I ever need a night or two in Ocracoke, I'm coming here!

Beware: We Paid for a Deluxe King Suite but Were Given a Standard Queen Room…read more I booked a Deluxe King Suite through Booking.com and immediately received a confirmation message directly from Blackbeard's Lodge asking whether I would be bringing a pet. I confirmed that I would and was informed of the additional pet fee due at check-in. This showed that the hotel had received my reservation details. When we arrived, we discovered we had not been given the Deluxe King Suite we paid for. Instead, we were placed in an old, worn Queen room that was clearly not the room category we had reserved. I spoke with Cynthia at the front desk. Rather than acknowledging the mistake or offering to refund the difference in price, she repeatedly blamed Booking.com and then offered several different explanations as to why it happened. She even agreed that I had every reason to be upset and told me how I could seek reimbursement. However, when Booking.com contacted the hotel on my behalf, the hotel refused to approve any adjustment. The most disappointing part wasn't just receiving the wrong room--it was the complete lack of accountability. We paid for one room category and received another, yet no one at the property was willing to make it right. If you book here, I strongly recommend confirming your room type before arrival and verifying that you actually receive the accommodations you paid for. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this hotel.

We had numerous problems with the house, one of which was a non-working toilet that they said they knew about and just assumed it had been fixed. A part was ordered but had not arrived by our departure. Another serious issue was that the house had roaches. They said that is common on the island. I've never seen one during our 6 other stays on the island. I asked the manager if she had roaches at her house and she stuttered and said no. They also said they would call me back and 4 hours later I called them again. They said they tried to call me but I had no missed calls. Then they said the emailed me and there was nothing. They said they spelled my name wrong which makes no sense when I am in their database. So then they emailed me again saying there was an attachment and of course it wasn't there. They tried to give me a gift card for a future stay and I told them no way. They returned a small amount of money which didn't even come close to how much we spent on taxes alone. They have since not returned my emails or texts. I would like to review the house and there is nowhere on the website to do so although they post reviews for each property.

Outside in the courtyard was a porch swing, tables and chairs, bicycles for rent for the guests, a recycle bin that all guests are encouraged to use, and an area for guests to fillet their fish. My only negative comment about the room was the rather small shower stall. Before checking in here or at most any property on Ocracoke Island, make sure you understand all of their policies. Once you have made your reservation, it is considered something that cannot be cancelled. They will send via email all of the details. This was a pleasant, quiet place to stay.

When Dare County issued a mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Erin, I was forced to leave my rental halfway through my stay. Despite paying nearly $5,000 for the second week, Midgett Realty refused to refund a single dollar. They hid behind a "forced field" checkbox about insurance buried in the booking process -- yet I never signed a lease, and their system still allowed me to book, pay in full, and check in. What makes this worse is the constant stream of promotional emails I received from Midgett about discounts on kayaks and beach gear, while they did little to clearly warn or emphasize protecting my stay through travel insurance. Clearly, sales come first -- customer protection comes last. After decades of loyalty to the Outer Banks, I will never book through Midgett Realty again. I've already filed a complaint with the North Carolina Department of Justice, and I will be sharing my experience with friends, family, and locals in the community so others can see how renters are treated when disaster strikes. If you're considering booking through Midgett Realty, be warned: when you need them most, they will not stand by you.
