Use Alltrails to hike this trail and locate trailhead. It is on one side of the Valley of the Temples. See attached map in pictures. We parked in the parking lot on other side of McDonalds and called over to trailhead. There was a few small slides bringing branches, trees down across trails. We actually find it made the trail more entertaining. There was a little mud in a few areas but most of the trail was dry. As we climbed higher we started to have some beautiful views of the bay. We started climbing higher and came to the section where there is a lot of steep uphill. If not in decent shape this leg of trail maybe too much for you. I went with hiking group a few years ago an some of the hikers turnaround at this point, their conditioning was not good enough for climb. Once we made it to the lookout we enjoyed a lunch with a gorgeous view. We headed back down and caught the right loop for the climb down. This section can be very steep an we used crampons to keep us from slipping on the pine needles and little round seed pods and loose dirt. There a rocky area you need to climb up and another section with tall grass around a large tree to climb over. There were a few interesting areas in this section. I did see one bee hive in a tree that had a lot of bees on it. From reviews on Alltrails one couple had a problem with them. We quietly went by and had no problem. The trail can have a lot of roots, possible mud in shaded areas, obstacle course of tree limbs in left section, very narrow sections with drop offs. Go up to the single trail for amazing view, trail is overgrown in part of this section, goes around huge mature trees. go to second beem that hangs over cliff for best view of hike. Be ready for a little bit of an adventure.

The Kalawahine Trail is beautiful, a little muddy, and not too difficult. It connects to many other…read moretrails in the Tantalus network of trails, so you can make it a longer or shorter hike, depending on how far you go. Some sections are quite shady and there is sometimes a little bit of sunlight. One section was labeled as a native snail area but I didn't see any snails. I recommend trail shoes and even a walking stick as there are some sections that are narrow with a section where you wouldn't want to fall down. Some sections have small rocks or rocks with moss on them, and good hiking shoes can help here. I always wear bug repellent but unlike some other hikes, this one didn't seem overly buggy. A beautiful hike with some lovely views and a nice workout that's not too overly difficult.

Kamaaina parking is $4 upon entry. There will be 2 parking lots in the area. One will be uphill and downhill. However, good luck finding a parking space during the weekends because it can get PACKED! There will be signs to guide you where to go so no need to be scared. This is absolutely my favorite hike, not only is it easy but it is soooo beautiful all around! I was a bit upset about the rock barricade preventing us from going in the waterfall but nonetheless people still refuse to listen to the sign and whoops... i'm one of them HAHA. Stunning views.

Seems popular to come to walk their doggos, runners, bike ride, bring their kids. It's flat and paved the whole way with the exception of going to side gravel when you need to pass others. Pretty casual and very relaxing walk. I always come here whenever I'm in Kailua and need a peaceful walking spot after eating. It's easy to stop here and only takes about 35-40 minutes each way (for a very casual pace walk). Probably faster if you run or speed walk. About 3 miles long. You can turn back anytime though! Parking lot easily accessible. P.S. wear sunscreen! It's not shaded and can get quite hot during the daytime. We love coming for sunsets so it's much cooler around that time.

There are two fairly nasty portable toilets by the parking lot.

It might be useful to take microspikes (you know, the ones usually used for icy sidewalks) in particularly wet conditions. I got up early, hit a bakery at 6am and then started making my way up. The trail is really well maintained with beautiful views on the way up. Unlike so many Oahu hikes, the parking lot is also very straightforward.

Nice hike with shade for the most part, trail becomes steep but has ropes to help…read more Lots of roots and uneven footing so watch your step. The California grass is tall and sharp, needs to be cut back. My friends and I have lots of little cuts on our arms from it. Also beware of bees! Bring you Benadryl or epo pen if you need, they sting one of us in the face as we were walking through the tall grass. This might not be a long hike but due to incline and climb up it is a good hike to get a good workout in. The view also did not disappoint, AMAZING!!!! As you go up of course they just get better and better. We are all so glad we finally made it to this hike!!! Parking is tight! And you are in a neighborhood, where you do not want to block there parking, only room for 3-5 cars smaller cars at one time. Love the friendship garden part of the hike with the gorgeous plants and trees that have species placards.

Not my favorite...kind of strenuous, with nice, but not necessarily breathtaking views…read more I had this hike on my list for a while now, so when friends suggested we go, I was up for it. Parking seemed limited, but I drove past the trailhead down to a section of the neighborhood that had a number of spaces. It was probably about an 8 minute walk back up to the trailhead. It starts easy, with much forest greenery, and several routes, that will take you on the Oneawa path. I guess I hadn't mentally prepared, but was surprised by the incline and the ropes. Perhaps my lack of uppers that morning was to blame, as I not expecting this to be difficult, but I was struggling to keep up with my friends as the hike continued. It took us about an hour to see the quarry waters, which were interesting, but only needed a few minutes to take in. You do get some nice views of the bay and it's not a very long hike, so there is that, but I honestly don't think I'd come back. It felt like more effort than it was worth and there are so many other hikes on Oahu that unless I lived RIGHT there, I don't think it warrants another go.

I love the combination of this trails because the variety of beautiful views, landscapes, type of surfaces. Dense lush rainforest to dryer areas with a variety of foliage. Started at the Makiki Arboretum trail, taking the loop to the right on the Maunalaha Trail. This section will get the blood flowing as you climb upward over a very rooted trail. Once you arrive at an area with metal benches there is an intersection of multiple trails. Take Makiki Valley Trail to the Right. After a short hike take the Moleka Trail to the Left. The Moleka trail becomes the Manoa Cliff trail which you stay on for a number of miles. If you struggle with narrow trails with drop offs this section may not be for you. There are beautiful views of Manoa Valley from the trail. Some sections of this trail can be muddy. In the past Hike once you go through the gate the Manoa Cliff trail takes a sharp turn to Left at Intersection of other trails. In our case there was a recent landslide and there was a warning sign not continue on the Manoa Cliff Trail. No problem we took Pauoa Flats Trail until we reached Kalawahine Trail and took a Left on it. Take this trail until you reach a paved road, take a right down the road until you see the next trailhead, Nahuina Trail which zig zags its way down. When you come to Makiki Valley trail go left. When you reach Kanealole take it to your right. This trail will take you back to trail you started on. Since there are so many different trails to do this loop I suggest using Alltrails download. We clocked over 10 miles. I'd rate it as intermediate. Bring plenty of water, I carry crampons in case there are muddy slippery areas. Would not do if heavy rain or strong winds expected.

Afternoon hike at Manoa Cliff, Kalawahine, and Makiki Valley Loop…read more Great trail, awesome views. Best if you can download the map as you loose service in several areas of the trail. My trail map also showed I hiked 7.3 miles and my husband stated 6.4, but either way it is long. Just be ready for a good long hike. We started in the rain so yes mud was around, and yes places were pretty slippery. But all in all not too bad to get around. Just wear good hiking shoes. Conditions: bugs, muddy, easy parking, great views, dog friendly, well maintained, wild flowers

Hiked the Lanikai Pillbox #2 Trail that starts from the back end on the Mauka side. It is longer…read moreand steeper than the Makai side. First takes you to #2 pillbox and #1 pillbox and if you continue on to the start of the other trail. Most hikers start at the trailhead by golf course on Makai side and only go up as far as the pillboxes. Found it to be a more interesting than the one most hikers take. Although they both shared the amazing views from the pillboxes. The beginning of hike is steep and rocky following a dry creek bed. Probably not the best route after heavier rain, can become slippery. There a variety of views of both valleys from the ridge, mountains and ocean. The trail has some scrambling, however not very difficult. Four of us that hiked it are all over 65 but seasoned hikers (well seasoned). It's best to hike this one early, not much shade. Wear proper shoes and bring plenty of water.

Pretty cool short trail. I was taking a 2.6 miles loop where you start from tantalus on the u'alaka…read moretrail which crosses over round top drive twice then you head on the makiki loop, go out and back on Moleka then back on makiki loop to a four point junction and head back via the other end of u'alaka. I went about 90% of Moleka it gets narrow and it drops straight down there's a switch back I guess right before the bamboo forest. Anyway it started raining and with less than a yard wide of slick cliff slide path I decided to turn back. But it's a short nice little detour I'd like to check out again when it's drier. Nice views out to the airport and of the Makiki Valley. Lots of cool banyan trees and suck. The area is generally cool and lots better when you know your way around because there are so many routes to take
