I am just getting into BBQ in a bigger way, so when I saw Christopher D's review of Oink Johnson's Southern BBQ along with the few others, I had a strong impulse to drive up county and find out for myself what this place had to offer. It was a gorgeous early September afternoon special made for a open window stereo blazing cruise in the rolling Bucks countryside. I was in a good mood. Driving up 611 north of Doylestown with the GPS alerting me that I was at my destination, I still did not recognize it at first. There is a small cabin on wheels sitting in the middle of the rocky parking lot, with a fruit stand on one side, and a puppy barn on the other. That trailered shack was Oink's. The front porch of the structure has two large BBQ grills, a large menu nailed to the wall. Took a few seconds to get oriented, especially when this big fella with a white apron and big white mustache came over and looked down at me and said: "What'll it be, young feller?" "Well, sir. I can't decide 'tween the Pulled Pork and the Brisket. What do ya think?" "They're both lip smackin' good, my man. Can't go wrong with either." Ok. I was hooked by ol' Oink's charm even before I made a choice. This guy and the whole set up was right out of a Michener novel. I was game to play my role. Two of his buddies sat to the side of the shack under an old beer company umbrella watching this transaction. I looked over to greet them with a reference to the weather, and they chawed back that maybe I should get one of both the pork and brisket. Nice upsell, gents. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich, BBQ Beans and Corn Bread. Oink disappeared into the enclosed portion of the hut on wheels to make his magic. He appeared a few minutes later with a large white paper wrapped package that seemed too big to be a Sammy. I couldn't see what was in it, which was just slightly troubling, but this man had such an aura of confidence that I let it slide thinking I was probably missing the point of just knowing it would be great without a need for a visual. This place is strictly take out, so although I would have preferred to enjoy my BBQ on site, I had to take with and drive back home to eat it. No biggie. Upon unwrapping the creation I found it was indeed a huge quantity of meat, but the roll had been saturated with pork and BBQ juices, and was too wet to eat. I ate the pork with a fork. It was tender and juicy, yet the BBQ flavor was not very strong, and it was a bit salty for my palate. The Beans were richly dark brown, heavy with molasses and chunks of fat back bacon. Excellent. The Corn Bread in the form of a muffin was good, but not overly sweet nor moist. If I could give a grade just for personality and appearance, Oink Johnson would be a 5 Star experience. But, as the Pulled Pork was not as good as others I have eaten, and the roll was a total loss, the food comes in at 2 Stars for me. I will get back there eventually to try the ribs and brisket, but I am disappointed by the lack of "Zing" in the Pulled Pork. Still, I recommend stopping in as the characters are wonderful, the locale very pretty farmland, and the food worth a sampling. read more

My gas grilled fell apart during set up this spring. The cost of new ones was weighing on my mind so procrastination set in. Hunkering for some BBQ stopped over at Oink's. Never did buy the grill. Instead it is Oink's every few weeks for melt in your mouth ribs - baby back or St Louis - succulent brisket and pulled pork. For variety we chow down the brined/BBQ chicken. Favorite side is the potato salad. If you want big sauce flavor get one of Oink's jars. Balance of cooking smoke and sauce straight off the grill is not overpower - no one flavor slams you - just a classic blend. If your preference is baby backs get there before Sunday afternoon. Final note, my better half way prefers Oink's efforts than mine. read more

Stopped there today July 5th,and got the most amazing meal! We got the full rack of ribs and the bbq pulled pork platter and then the owner threw in a 1/2 of bbq chicken! I honestly couldn't say which one was the best, the chicken was really moist, the ribs were fall off the bone and the pork was delicious! Would highly recommend this little gem to anyone who wants some seriously good bbq! read more

Racing southward on 611, my eye caught a fleeting glimpse of a roadside sign with the words "BBQ Ribs and Pulled Pork." Needless to say, I frantically turned my car around and settled between a dog farm and an unusual-looking food stand. The owner leaned casually toward the road, hardly acknowleging me, until I asked him, "What's good?" He gave the standard "everything's good" response, so I told him I was just looking for lunch. "Pulled pork?" he asked. "Absolutely," I replied. Two minutes and six dollars later, I was driving south again and trying my best to shove that sublime sandwich down my throat. The meat was as tender as could be, full of juice and with just enough sauce to offer a little tang. Right off the bat, I'd call this a killer find. But then I was back the following Thursday again, driving south after another visit to Nockamixon State Park. And to my chagrin, the stand was gone, vanished like the mystical village of Brigadoon. The sign remained - "Open: Fri, Sat & Sun" read the bottom. This time I bit my lip and moved on, but I'll be back with a voracious appetite on some other weekend. read more

Just had the pulled pork from their traveling food truck at Bishop Winery. The meat is so flavorful before even putting their BBQ sauce on it. It is tied with the best I ever had from Nashville, TN and Austin, TX. I wanna try the brisquet soon. Slaw was delicious also. read more

Oink has clearly earned a Doctorate in Pork and Chicken, almost certainly from the School of Long Experience. i have been a rib fan for many, many years, and have has some of anything anybody has ever barbequed. Oink's ribs were pure heaven, not the KC style I have become accustomed to, but the St. Louis style I have come to feel is number 2 only to Memphis. The ribs are meaty and moist, full of smoke and almost perfectly sauced. The pulled pork is heaven on a bun. Plus, we were very surprised by the quality of his BBQ chicken, which came close to stealing the whole show. Next time (and it won't be long), I'll be trying the brisket and some baked beans. Oink's is the place to be, Friday through Sunday, at the side of 611 at the site of Jack's Dog Farm. Get there, pick your favorite, and be prepared to fall in love . read more

A road side smoke shack that you smell before you see it produces some of the nicest ribs in the area. Its Texas style, simply rubbed with salt and peppers. Great smoke flavor. Got a side of hickory bbq sauce, which was nice to dip a rib in. Side of coleslaw was good too. Looking forward to going back for the pulled pork. They are only open Friday through Sunday but its well worth the drive up 611. read more

i had been driving by for months and finally made the stop late on a sunday. ordered one rack of ribs - dry. smelled delicious. got home and was pretty underwhelmed. i was hoping for them to fall off the bone into my mouth but they were chewy and not that good. i could've made the same ribs on my grill. i would try some pulled pork - but staying away for now. read more

Can i just say wow? Why is it that the great food is always the hole in the wall, or in this case a stand. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich and chicken platter. Meat on both melted in your mouth. Tender and great taste. Chicken had a nice smokey flavor to it, i bet you don't even need the bbq sauce to enjoy it. Sides were good too esp the yummy bbq beans. A bit tough to find, and only open seasonally, but Oink's is one of the my favorite BBQ places. A friend of mine will drive from an hour away to pick up some baby backs and chicken. The chicken is some of the best that you will have! Also a big fan of the baby backs, they are usually excellent but they don't always have them. I saw some comments about the regular ribs not being fall of the bone, and I've had the same experience, but typically if you want fall off the bone then you should be going with baby backs. I'd also recommend the brisket over the pulled pork, hands down. Corn muffins are good also! Can't beat the roadside ambience of a bbq truck, and this one hits it home. read more

I decided to "cheat" and take oinks with me as "my barbeque" for a Phillies-Pirates game. That is a whole story in itself. So I took 2 full ribs, 6 pulled pork sandwiches, cornbread, green beans, baked beans and coleslaw. All that I can say is wow! I also had to come clean because there is no way on earth that I could take credit. Everyone loved it all. The ribs melted, had perfect flavor and we lived them. Oink Johnson also piled pulled pork into a container and 6 rolls. Luckily I planned on throwing some dogs on the grill after the game because he gave me so much meat that I was able to make three more sandwiches with hotdog rolls, the green beans were the best I ever eaten.....ever! The baked beans were amazing and the coleslaw was good enough to put on the sandwich. I have been back for a picnic with my wife on the canal. It was just as good the second time. The only negative is that it isn't open every day. But, I can understand. Anyway, Oinks has the best barbeque north of the mason Dixon line . Love it! read more
