I had written almost the entire review, and then decided to switch from four stars to five. I do have some minor notes, but I decided some of these (such with the pork belly buns) could be a matter of taste. Further, the sushi was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. I had the opportunity to try: - Pork Belly Buns - Crab Rangoons - Unagi Maki - Firecracker Maki Pork Belly Buns - didn't really do it for me. Perhaps I have become picky with such things, and am seeking out some kind of 'perfection' which I had in a restaurant that has since changed the recipe. On the positive side the pork was cooked very nicely and was rather tender. However, on the flip side, I found it bland - there were some savory notes, though they were muted. The sauce was very mild in flavor and resembled a lightly sweetened gravy. Further, the sauce on the side an already on the buns appeared very similar, if not the same thing. The cucumber was a nice touch, though I would have preferred a little more, and the sauce overtook a bit. I should mention I ended up sending this one back - asking for the Crab Rangoons instead. They were able to switch this for me, thank you very much :) I'd also like to mention that they state this item is very popular, so this might just be me being nitpicky, maybe. Crab Rangoons - were solid. They were piping hot and fresh straight from the fryer! They were cooked perfectly and of a very decent size. My critique with these is the filling was a little unidimensional. The only flavors I was able to pick up on was sweetened cream cheese. I want to say I would have preferred it be a little more 'crabby'. However, having made rangoons myself, I can tell you crab sticks are not tremendously flavorful on their own. It is about what's added to the filling itself. Unagi Maki - was great! It was well-balanced in eel to cucumber to avocado. The sauce wasn't overdone, and the rice was high quality. As much as I love creative rolls, sometimes simplicity just works. Firecracker - was excellent! There was a very generous amount of top-quality fish. Like with the unagi, the rice was high quality. The sauce was not at all overpowering, and the tempura gave a light, pleasant crunch. My only note here is that I didn't find this roll spicy. Usually jalapeno is enough to trigger a feeling of heat. This could be the nature of the roll, or the nature of my tongue... likely a combination of both. The service was polite and fast. However, where the tables were behind the partition they are hidden from view. Though, it only took peeking from out of it to get the server's attention. read more

I am a big fan of Oishi Japanese Restaurant. Located right on Main Street, this place has plenty of parking options ranging from parking lots to street parking. The outside decoration and signage were well crafted giving off a very polished vibe. The interior is beautifully decorated with plenty of seats that can accommodate large parties to intimate dinners. The service is very fast and the wait staff is very friendly. I ordered the hibachi chicken and salmon which came up around $18. The plate and portions were massive. I loved the sweet teriyaki and savory egg fried rice. Food: I got the seaweed salad, Gyoza, Fuji Mountain and Worcester Maki roll. honestly, I'm quite disappointed by the overall quality as everything was just rather soggy. For eight dollars of seaweed salad the portion is screaming. The Gyoza's would have been decent if they were crispy fried. Both the sushi rolls tasted like they've been sitting for a little too long and the wraps were soggy. Overall, it just wasn't fresh. After seeing the Avengers, we passed the nearby Feng Asian Bistro (which we consider to be a very mediocre restaurant) and decided to try a small Sushi place off Main Street in Worcester. They have tables and a small sushi bar here, though it's a modest and spartan looking spot. We think you order at the counter, though that was never clearly elucidated. We were handed two menus at the counter, and they pointed in the direction of the half dozen empty tables when we told them we were eating there. We think this is a takeout oriented establishment. The menu is relatively extensive for a small place and we selected: * Sashimi Sushi Maki Combination Deluxe $23: 6 pieces of sashimi, 6 pieces of sushi and California maki. Served with miso soup or salad (I ordered the salad - Fresh, lettuce, carrots and cucumber with ginger dressing). * Tuna Salmon Fun Plate $12.25: 4 pieces of spicy tuna roll, 4 pieces of spicy salmon roll, 2 pieces of tuna sushi and 2 pieces of salmon sushi. * Gold Fish Roll $12.95: Spicy salmon, mango, avocado, tempura crumbs topped with salmon, shrimp and tobiko. The salad arrived first. It was very basic, mainly lettuce with a traditional dressing. The salad was followed by the sushi and rolls. We thought the sushi was good, far from the best or worst we've ever sampled. There was no follow-up from anyone, and when we finished, we strolled up to the counter to pay. The ambiance is extremely basic, the Dunkin Donuts of sushi. As stated earlier, we think this restaurant is mainly a takeout and delivery-oriented place. Would we come again? This place is just okay. The sushi had a good amount of filling as opposed to rice which is always a plus, but the eel roll was lacking eel in general. I don't mean to say that the eel wasn't there it was just so small you had to basically look for the eel to know that it's there - you could only sort of taste it. The other rolls were great though. I believe we got the spicy tuna and spicy salmon along with the green dragon roll. The tuna and salmon were decent portion in the rolls and tasted relatively fresh. The owner was very nice. He came to talk to us a little bit about the menu and chatted with us quite a bit at the end of our meal. Service was fast and friendly. We ordered from this place for delivery last night as a, last-minute decision. You understand. I haven't had edamame in a hot minute, so I decided to give an order of that a whirl as my appetizer, and as you already know, an order of the spring rolls were necessary. I wanted maybe a roll or two but my main interest in dinner for this particular evening was an entree with veggies. They have teriyaki entrees and a whole bunch of trays with combos of rolls and other stuff but the only vegetarian entree was vegetable teriyaki. The menu description of this, veggies with some rice and a soup or salad, just didn't feel like it did it for me. They also have ramen so I decided on an order of spicy vegetable ramen. One of the good things I will say about this place is they have interesting vegetable rolls, shit I've never seen before, shit that goes above and beyond the traditional avocado, cucumber, cucumber-avocado, etc. I don't eat seafood so sorry you wasted your time reading my review up until this point. Anyways, I digress. The vegetable rolls that I'm sure you're now intrigued by, that I was just mentioning, includes vegetarian maki (cucumber, avocado, it gets more interesting i promise: carrot, pickle, and tofu skin), seaweed salad maki, inari maki (sweetened tofu skin), and what I ordered: mango maki (mango, cucumber, avocado, and spicy mayo). Thank goodness the delivery time was almost suspiciously fast. It was projected to arrive at 30 min but arrived even quicker than that. I just happened to turn my phone (door buzz is a call) to ring about 2 seconds before the man buzzed in, close call. Unfortunately, the food wasn't impressive. It wasn't disgusting I guess which is a win but it was bland. I didn't event detect SALT on the edamame. The roll, despite the intriguing ingredients, was bland AF and not rolled very tightly. The soup was fine, I mean I can slurp up noodles in a broth, and the veggies were scant but broccoli was a nice touch (I'm a broccoli girl), but it just wasn't flavorful, like at all. The spring rolls had a nice skin that was crisp and crunchy but had almost no filling. The filling that was there was boring cabbage-like substance and a few carrot shreds. After a long day of work I didn't want to cook and decided that I wanted to try sushi from a new place. I ordered a queen roll, fried dumplings, a Manhattan Maki roll, and Japanese veggie egg rolls. Everything was so delectable & the egg rolls were so crispy. Everything tastes so fresh and given that there's not many good Asian places in the area (I myself being Asian), I can vouch that this is a very good Asian restaurant. An amazing and delicious Japanese restaurant with some Chinese influence. I love and get the Teriyaki stir fry every time I come here for lunch. I go for lunch sized specials because they cost less and have smaller portions. I think the Oishi Teriyaki which combines a variety of vegetables, meat and shrimp is the best. I come here every couple weeks to get a change in my meals. The service is really good, and they offer a nice frequent buyer program that after 4 meals gets you a free appetizer. First, the seaweed salad was two fork fulls of a portion. At most. Secondly, I was never asked if I wanted anything to drink. The special comes with EITHER soda, salad, soup, etc listed on the menu. The rolls came and this was when I started to get angry at the other reviews. Guys. I'm so sorry if this is good sushi in Worcester. It really is not and I'm scared for our health. Lol. My spicy salmon roll ended up being regular salmon that was very light pink and grey in color. The mango in the mango roll was so unripe it was crunchy and pale yellow (like the inside of an apple). 2 stars because the food came out wicked fast. I was in and out in 20 minutes. Given the price, quantity, and quality of the food, this is a prime spot for a college student to order takeout (which I have done many, many times in the three years I've been studying). The restaurant itself is really small and I wouldn't personally recommend eating inside. Oishi is one of the more authentic and fresh sushi places you'll find in Worcester. I'll cut to the chase: if you are craving sushi and don't want to leave the comfort of your home, get Oishi. If you want a really nice meal, there is better sushi out there. For cheap sushi that won't make you sick, this is the place to go. Plus they deliver! To be honest, I've never eaten in the restaurant itself because the delivery option is such a great deal. Delivery is also fast. I usually order the Maki Mono Bento Box in which you can get any two rolls of your choice, with rice on the outside, and a one side soup/soda/house salad/or seaweed salad for $10.95. I almost always order the spicy white tuna roll, the mango roll and get a side house salad. The spicy white tuna roll is usually pretty great and a top recommendation. The mango roll can be hit or miss; if the mango is ripe it is so light, fresh, and definitely one of my chief cravings. However, I've had an unripe mango roll quite a few times. I like the house salad, but it is just lettuce and ginger sauce. Overall, I've had better sushi in my life but it usually breaks the bank. I ordered ramen from this restaurant and was excited to get it because I love ramen and was happy to see that Worcester had a spot. When the ramen arrived I dug in to 1. Cold chicken in the ramen 2. PACKAGED RAMEN. IM TALKING STRAIGHT OUT THE PLASTIC WITH THE SEASONING PACKET. When I called to complain the woman answered very clearly and understood what I was saying. When I mentioned this she pretended not to understand. I asked if I could have a refund or exchange. She said no and hung up the phone. Then i tried to called back and have gotten no response. so I thought this place served teriyaki chicken and white rice like any other Japanese place. I was wrong. I only came in because it's in my neighborhood and I wanted to support it. But the chicken was cut up like chicken on a Caesar salad. The rest didn't have any eggs in it. And they made everything separate. Maybe it's just me but when I order teriyaki chicken from any place that I have gone for the past many years even to go, it's all in one plate and it's all mixed up amazingly. This place just opened and I was very excited to try it. There is a real lack of diversity in restaurant options in the downtown Worcester area, so Japanese food is a real boon. Our group ordered a variety of things from the menu - the Manhattan maki roll, the Main St maki roll, the tofu skin roll, the chicken tempura maki roll, and chicken teriyaki. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The teriyaki looked great, but I didn't have any. Prices are very reasonable (~$6.50 gets you an eight-piece maki roll, a can of soda, and salad), and the interior is clean and well-decorated. Oishi is near my office and, much to the detriment of my bank account, I get lunch here all the time. Having said that, the lunch specials are a good deal. The sushi is very good and I've never had a bad experience. There are some tables inside but this is more of a lunch counter than a sit-in place. Asked for tea and ice water and was told they have no ice. As I don't drink bottled water it was tea only for me. The tea was served in an elegant paper cup with a tea bag. Awesome. Ordered the sashimi deluxe which came with a salad. The salad was okay and had your usual premade dressing. The sashimi was 12 pieces for $18.95. Not a steal but not exactly great either. It came with four pieces of tuna, snapper, butterfish and salmon with a scoop of rice. The quality was mediocre as the tuna tasted as if were defrosted. Does not accept Amex.
