I put in a take out order for weekday lunch from here. I picked the eel avocado and shrimp tempura rolls that were $12 each. Upon arriving at the restaurant, saw it was packed with guests dining in during lunch hour. The place is relatively small with sushi sanseis working in a corner station. A staff member handed me the order right away. Both the sushi rolls were packed in a small box, with some wasabi and ginger. It can with tiny bottle of soy sauce and a nice pair of chopsticks. The sushis tasted decent but were way too small is size and quantity. Each roll had 6 pieces only, not even 8 like most places do. I was still hungry after eating both rolls. read more

About 30 minute wait on a Friday night as they don't take reservations ahead only after arriving. Not a lot of tables but do have seats at the bar. Very friendly staff. The sashmi/sushii was a bit miss for me as some of the pieces had a slight flavor to it...karaage was fried just right but this also had a slight oily taste to it. Caesar salad that came with out set had a citrus flavor..Everyone loved the food so I think it was just my taste buds... the matcha ice cream was really good even though I don't like matcha. If you like sushi and you give Okinami anything less than 5 stars you are insane!!! This is by far the most legit sushi place in the area bar none. The regular fare is good but if you really want to go bananas the Premium and Omakase meals are ridiculous! On a side note somehow on a $75 plate of premium sushi they managed to make the star of the show their MUSHROOM nigiri? It's Amazing and even if you don't want to go all in on the premium get a piece of the mushroom then silently toast the strange Yelp reviewer for telling you about it. If I am forced to give a downside to this restaurant I will say it is expensive but with great quality comes great cost. My bank account hates this place but the sushi snob in me loves it! Also one side note on the service. I generally don't care or comment on the service as I go places for the food and if it's awesome I will deal with whatever service I get. However, I have been to Okinami multiple times and have noticed one small detail I have not seen anywhere else. I am left handed. Somehow the lady who serves us always notices this and in turn places my utensils and other things on my left side while others at my table have things placed on the right. We had the Salmon Tataki appetizer, blistered shishito peppers, miso black cod, and then an array of sushi and rolls. We also had the rolls set and sushi set. Both came with a house salad and miso soup. They sushi and rolls were a generous portion and we all helped finish up. For dessert we shared the chocolate mouse cake which was delicious. Creamy but not overly sweet. Perfect. Service was also excellent. Knowledgeable, friendly and patient. They were also hustling the whole time we were there as they were busy but they kept coming by to refill our water and check in on us. After reading many reviews, I had to check the hype. Yes, the sushi quality is outstanding and you will pay for it in a price that is much higher than other standard sushi restaurants. The sushi here is also unique in you'll get some fish that you won't see at other places. Okinami is on a relatively busy road in Norwood and quite small. There are maybe 7-8 tables within, plus a sushi bar. I highly recommend takeout as they even make that an enjoyable experience (comes with dipping trays, soy sauce drippers and my platter even came with a disposable tablecloth). If you are going to try to dine in, arrive when they open. To properly sample all of the deliciousness, I opted to get my wife and I the "sushi and sashimi platter; serves 4-5". We ate the whole thing, but mind you, I can eat a lot. It was also very delicious. The platter had an exquisite variety and didn't even include some of the typical fish. I was really happy with the content. That said, I'm not going to spend $170 on a platter like this for dinner too often - maybe once or twice per year. If you want AYCE sushi, there's a place 2 blocks away. Overall though, great quality, high standards, fantastic variety with unique sushi and I was really happy with it. I came for lunch and the lunch special did not disappoint. The sushi lunch has the option to choose calamari, gyoza, or karaage. I chose calamari and the edamame, miso soup and salad came with the sushi as well and all for $22! 4 pc chefs choice nigiri + spicy salmon roll was amazing. Blue fin tuna, amberjack, salmon and shrimp nigiri pieces were all such high quality cuts of fish. The lean cut of blue fin tuna was buttery and tender (not as melt in your mouth like chutoro but pretty close considering it's supposed to be the leanest cut). I was stuffed by the end of lunch and couldn't finish my miso soup because of how much food came with the lunch special! It was very busy when I arrived a little past noon but I was able to be seated at the sushi counter. The chefs and wait staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. The space inside is pretty small but it made for a cozy and intimate setting. Very clean in the restaurant and bathroom as well. Amazing sushi!!! I've only had takeout from here a few times thanks to a friend who lives close by, but the quality is consistently excellent. The sushi platter for 4-5 people is $160 which is on the pricier side, but you definitely get a variety of unique things you normally wouldn't get at other sushi places. I was so thrilled to try Okinami when they first opened up for takeout only. I hope they've opened up their dining space since then because the sushi is just sensational! If I enjoyed their food this much in to-go containers, I can imagine it being even better served straight from the sushi chef! I can't begin to tell you how fresh the fish is. The combo is such a great set and the chef hand selects the best there is. I absolutely loved the scallop but everything was very good. This place is sushi excellence. I ordered takeout for lunch with my partner. The whole meal itself cost about 40 somewhat dollars but was worth it. From chicken karage, edamame, spicy salmon roll, salmon avocado roll, and a spicy scallop roll, everything was delicious. What surprised me was that the spicy salmon and spicy scallop was served with roe, which was a delightful surprise. Everything was packaged beautifully. I also liked that they served soy sauce in tiny dopplers. They were so cute and helpful with not making a mess. The restaurant itself was clean but looks small. I ordered online. Pure excellence, super fresh fish, and there small plates appetizers are impressive. I happen to love the vegetable gyoza and Ofcourse the yellow tail roll is " chefs kiss!". It doesn't make sense to eat sushi anywhere else. The dine in experience is intimate , and the staff are all gracious. It is always packed on a Friday and Saturday night and they close early. You know the typical side salad you typically get at even high end Japanese restaurants? Forget about that here. The side salad was made with cabbage with the most delicious dressing. There is not a great selection of cooked food. My husband ordered shumi, an eel & avocado roll and a delicious crab roll with real crab and he was happy. There were a lot of cooked appetizers and specials that I would have tried if I wasn't in love with sashimi such as the black cod. Nobu was known for its black cod. Yum. The tea was delicious. Okinami easily earns all FIVE STARS. The quality of the fish and they way it is cured is mind blowing. Each piece of sushi and sashimi was expertly curated and beautifully presented. I ordered one sashimi/sushi set along with one sushi set. Both came with miso soup and a salad. The chefs and staff were very warm and knowledgeable. You can tell how passionate and experienced they are in their craft just by watching them prepare and present the food. It was refreshing to have good quality sushi that wasn't the standard sushi that one normally gets in a typical sushi deluxe in NJ. I really enjoyed this intimate sushi restaurant, hence I'm afraid to write about how flavorful and fresh the sushi was since if word gets out (inevitable) I won't be able to get a seat! I had the "Sushi and Sashimi" set consisting of 4 pieces of Chef's choice nigiri and 8 pieces of Chef's choice sashimi with one choice of a role. My role selection was the spicy scallop, which was lightly flavored with spice, not swimming in sauce camouflaging the flavor (as I've experienced in other sushi restaurants). It was so fresh, one could tell the fish just recently was living the high life in the sea. The tuna, bluefin crab, salmon, chutoro, shrimp - EVERYTHING that went into my eager mouth was pure and clean tasting. Even the soy sauce was outstanding, having been made in-house. Sitting at the bar, one can have pleasant conversation with the sushi chef, also one of three partners in this delightful and humble restaurant. The quality of fish and the thoughtfulness of the packaging really stood out - however... for the price - I probably wouldn't return for take out. I really love sushi and don't shy away from a higher end experience - in this case I'd say 4 stars only because at this price point it's really hard to justify opting for this instead of something like JMart that's also take out only but 1/3 the price for a very solid, similar quality meal. if you want high quality, delicious sushi but don't wanna travel all the way to nyc, this is your place to go!! this sushi restaurant just opened about 4 weeks ago and i was invited by the owners to come by and check it out! okinami in japanese means "gentle/chill wave" and the vibe in this restaurant is definitely reflective of the name. they are doing takeout only right now (dine in soon!!) but i was able to experience friendly and wonderful conversation with the owners, watch them prepare the sushi, and then eat (devour) the sushi. every little step - from the fish they import from overseas, the short grain rice, how they smoke the eel, how they make their salad dressing and soy sauce - it all matters to them. not to mention, the owners come from well known restaurants in nyc so these are talented, experienced chefs preparing your sushi/sashimi, but just in a suburban, more chill setting how cool is that!! i was able to try their omakase which comes with one special roll and miso soup. highly recommend getting the blue crab roll. the miso soup had mushrooms and tofu. 10/10. i was also able to try the three roll dinner special which came with salad and miso soup. the salad comes with homemade sesame dressing. the eel avocado roll is usually my go to at any sushi place but WOW this eel was smoked and tasted SO GOOD. the spicy salmon roll was good as well! an interesting thing to note is that the soy sauce comes in dropper bottles on purpose so that instead drenching your sushi in soy sauce and wasting it, you can squeeze a little over each piece so you can save soy sauce and enjoy flavorful sushi! you can find their menu on their website if you google the restaurant! prices are a little high but worth every penny for the food and service you get :) if you're craving sushi with fresh and quality ingredients, TRY THIS PLACE!! the owners rly value their customers and want to do their best to serve you their best. thank you again for the delicious meal and i will definitely be back soon!!! read more
