Okay If you can't cook Japanese food please don't own a restaurant that serves it! The fried rice was the worst I have ever had in my life. Pretty decent Korean-owned Japanese sushi place, they offer a good variety of items besides the usual sushi and rolls - some popular Korean fares like Hwe dup bap (assorted sashimi pieces over bed of rice & greens - kind of like chirashi but usually with more veggies), ddukbokee are offered, and they have poke bowls! I got my office folks to order pick up lunch twice so far to eat healthier, and overall they liked it. Their karaage chicken app was tender and moist with nice chili dip and chicken teriyaki entree was a bit closer to a Chinese/Korean rendition but flavor and quantity was good. Now for their poke.. Hawaiian poke ($15.99, 3/5) - Pretty decent with sesame shoyu but a bit lacking in dimension, such as they need a real shoyu with a bit more katsuobushi depth. Also, it could use 1 or 2 more toppings - with just avocado, Masago, tuna, seaweed salad, mango with sprinkle of scallion, it was definitely lacking dimension. Salmon Lover Bowl ($18.95, 2/5) - A bit disappointing. They actually use unagi sauce... you know, the thick and sweet... that shouldn't be on a poke, period. I suspected it when I saw "teriyaki sauce" as part of the ingredient so also asked for shoyu, and I was right. Salmon quantity was 25% lacking and Ikura was definitely lacking. Again with no crunch and limited toppings, I found myself wanting. Fresh wasabi was good but would've been nice to have it on one side because it wasn't very visible at all and I got brain freeze throughout. Light on quantity as well. Signature Hoshitori Poke Bowl ($18.95, 3/5) - Not very memorable. Same theme with lack of dimension and quantity for the price. Overall I'm glad this take-out only place exists nearby, but it's definitely a bit overpriced and light on quantity. I can't speak for its rolls and sushi main fare nor ramen, but I'd imagine similar. It's Korean-owned, so some of the slightly inauthentic flavor was to be expected. Next time, I'll try their hwe dup bap and see how they do with Korean fare, as well as sushi & rolls. But I'm not crazy about these prices, even with inflation... because I kinda know a thing or two about good eating, and you definitely can find other poke places that offer MORE at lower price around here. I hope they could offer a bit of variety of crisps (fried garlic chips, shallots, nori, etc.), another topping, 10% more fish and 20% more rice for the price, or charge $3 less. read more

Ordered takeout from here for the first time and unfortunately, the experience was not a good one due to several blunders. Firstly, one item was missing. Second, I ordered several sushi rolls and no soy sauce was included. Lastly, I specifically asked for the beef in the beef teriyaki to be cooked to a medium. It came well done. On top of all of that, this place isn't cheap. With so many sushi options in the area, I don't see a return visit to this place any time soon. read more

I just picked up dinner from here last night. The food came around 40-50 minutes later than the text from the restaurant said it would be. Luckily we weren't in a rush so it wasn't too annoying. The poke bowl was pretty good, however is wasn't very big. There wasn't that much salmon in there, which was disappointing considering that's the best part. The ramen was also kind of expensive and other local places are better. For some reason, the ramen was $2 more on Doordash than it was at the restaurant. If I had known this, I would've just called and ordered directly from the restaurant. Due to the extremely long wait time and the fact that there's better restaurants in the area for cheaper, I won't be coming back here. read more

First time trying this place tonight. So far so good. We ordered 5 rolls and the sushi and sashimi entree for 1. Best roll was the Spider roll (soft shell crab). Both the Black Dragon and Caterpillar rolls were tasty but skimpy on the eel. As for the raw fish, the yellowtail and salmon were fresh and delicious. The tuna though tasted like it had been previously frozen and missing flavor - almost watery if that makes sense. Overall, will def be picking up from this place again. read more

like everyone has said, this place is expensive. An omakase here is as much as it is in NY, but the quality isn't nearly as good. Service was not that great either. It took them 20 mins for them to give us water, and kept forgetting to bring plates to eat...probably due to their under-staffing. But the staff in general is overall friendly. I saw some regulars having a good time with the sushi chefs, who are also very friendly. My advice is to stick to to-go. They pay more attention to to-gos than to sit-in services. read more

I found a local gem. Per my friend's recommendation, I finally visited this restaurant and realized I should have tried this place much earlier. I had sushi omakase and was surprised with the quality of the sushi. I work in the city and am a regular to those high end Japanese restaurants, and what I had at Hoshitori was very comparable (or even better) to those popular pricey places in the city, run by famous chefs. If you want "quality" sushi, this is definitely one of the restaurants you want to keep in your favorite list. read more

so so so good, super fresh food,m. i will say it's a much more popular option for take out but i go for sit down all the time. we're always treated so well and always given a california roll on the house! highly recommend the miso ramen. they have a huge vegetarian section which is awesome not a lot of places have that available (and if they do it's a little lacking) but they do an amazing job here! read more

There really aren't many options for lunch in this area, so I was very excited to find a decent sushi place so close to my office. It's located within a strip mall, but the indoor decor is super cute and the atmosphere is welcoming and bright. Service was amazing! The lunch specials are great value - they offer a variety of different rolls, sushi, and other dishes. I opted for some of the regular rolls, but their special rolls looked pretty good. I was also pleasantly surprised to see some Korean items on the menu as well - dishes like hwe dup bap (sashimi over rice). On the way out, I also spotted some amazing desserts. I couldn't tell what they were but they sure looked yummy. The food here isn't to die for, but they offer a great overall experience and value. Can't wait to be back! read more

This place has just opened, replacing Matsuba at this location. And we are glad they are here. Wonderful to have great sushi in Old Tappan! Shumai and Gyoza are fresh and good. Special rolls really are special. Love the Red Hot, the Caterpillar, Tropicana and Dynamite rolls. Give this new business a try. Possibly the worst sushi I've ever had, surprising and suspicious all the good reviews. The place is clean and professional, but they have no business making sushi, it's poor quality is a step up from the sushi you get at rite aid. Everything about it was bad, we sampled so much of what they had in a pick up order, it was terrible, the salmon hand roll looked disgusting, the teriyaki salmon was so dry and flavorless, overall the fish they have is not sushi quality, and they don't even use sushi rice. They mask the terrible rolls with bad mayo, I can just keep going on and on, and believe I know sushi, and I realize that this place does not claim to be fine sushi, but even by fast food sushi standards it's terrible, there are so many other great alternatives in the area. I feel bad writing this review but the food is bad and priced as such, the over 50 speciality rolls they offer should of been a clear sign of quantity over quality. read more

I had heard to stay away from the sushi in the Bi State plaza. Since it is under new ownership, my husband and I thought we would give it a whirl one night. I am so glad we took the plunge, the food was fantastic. The rolls are interesting, not just...how many different combinations can we throw over spicy tuna? The rice-fish ratio is perfect, and the rice is light... not too sticky, heavy or overwhelming. The fish was fresh and proportioned well. The spicy sauce is actually spicy. Let me say that again... the spicy sauce is. actually. spicy. I highly suggest a white ninja or a crunch roll. And, this is huge for me, they give regular soy sauce at the table!! I feel like every sushi place I go to now has low sodium soy sauce. Get out of here with that. yuck. Try it. You will like it. read more

Just not very good. The old place was better, but they charged 30% more than other places so I stayed away. This restaurant has better prices, but the quality is not good compared to others in the area. For one, the sushi rice they use tastes terrible. And the temperature of it just seems odd. The fish itself is average at best, not a really tasty quality to it. They cut for size but looks sloppy, amateur knife work. The worst part of my experience here was that the ginger they gave us smelled like poorly dried laundry. You know the smell when you let your wet clothes sit in the washer too long? Turned me off of this place forever. Beef teriyaki was nothing special either. The main sushi chef seemed too occupied trying to direct his overly youthful assistants. read more

Ordered takeout from here last week for the second time since it's under new ownership. First experience was also takeout and seemed perfectly fine, but had our eyes opened on our recent visit. Got there a bit early to pick up our takeout order, and saw that the "steamed" appetizers are actually heated in the microwave - in plastic. I NEVER microwave anything in plastic at home, and this health hazard was a real turnoff. We threw out the food when we got home. I know what you're thinking....if I saw the kitchen in most restaurants I'd never eat out again....but I just can't get past this. They also use styrofoam for takeout. C'mon guys. It's 2014. Very sad and disappointed, since this place is actually within walking distance to our house. But i'll choose to "walk on by." read more

It's worth a repeat, tried this place for the first time and I enjoyed what I had. For lunch they offer a sushi burrito, quiet food, something different and its filling. I also ordered the sunny roll and that was good as well, a little more creative then your typical fancy roll. Figured I test the waters a little and ordered sea urchin and sweet shrimp known as amaebi both were fresh and quiet good. I need to start taking pictures to post, the sweet shrimp came with the a head deep fried and it was delicious. The sushi chef commented that the sea urchin was fresh from Hokkaido and I started talking about areas in Japan I had traveled to. Until now, Northern Bergen/Rockland county existed as the veritable black-hole of sushi-dom with nary anything outside the realm of the ubiquitous over-vinegared 'Philadelphia Roll', the apparent height of cosmopolitan taste between 9W and 17N. At last - and I say this with all the gusto of a Southern Baptist choir on Easter - there has been staked a higher standard. Enter, Hoshitori: Wasabi not necessary, soys I - this sushi stands on its own. Let's start with the basics - the fish. Having just returned from Tokyo, visiting the famous Tsukiji market along the way, I can now properly say I am acquainted with the goods, and this restaurant delivers (I might add that is not a sentence I ever expected to write about the jersey sushi scene). Fresh, succulent, buttery toro, you complete me. Forget fishmongers, this is salmon brown bear style: "Raaaawww baby! Fresh kill!" Rolls: The 'White Ninja' is perhaps the most elegant and graceful piece this side of the Hudson, the de facto Audrey Hepburn of inside-out rolls, decadent and creative. Down the hatch, next: I've sampled other more typical 'Dynamite' rolls before, but this one is solitarily unique in both presentation and palette, the sauce (I'm not sure what's in it, but when Presley first dipped a banana in peanut butter, or whoever discovered that bleu cheese goes with spicy chicken, and you first dipped your pizza in Ranch, yeah...you know what's up...well, after that I've forgotten all about soy sauce) is inspired, and takes three chopsticks to pin it down. Big-ups for opening in this desert, and man are we Bergeners grateful. I can rest easy now, knowing that I don't need my E-ZPass to get great sushi anymore. My co-worker and I decided to try the new sushi place because we work close by. We were extremely disappointed and angry after we ate their food because we felt sick for the rest of the day. After looking at the unfinished rolls, you can see that the fish wasn't fresh. Their ginger dressing for the salad is a bit strange in taste and texture. Also, the Kani salad was nothing but sliced cucumbers. We have agreed we will never eat at this new sushi restaurant every again and needed to post this to advise people. read more
