A DOMODOMO in Closter?!? Okay, not exactly. But this is definitely a spinoff of DOMODOMO, my favorite Japanese restaurant in Jersey City. Maybe this place can be thought of as a mini DOMODOMO specializing in katsu (fried pork). The food is definitely DOMODOMO quality. Loved the pork katsu - it's fried nice and crispy and packed with flavor in each bite. Chicken katsu was also fried well and delicious. I also enjoyed the niku udon as a nice comforting noodle bowl. And sushi was also delicious and you could taste the freshness of the fish. They have a weekday lunch special but lunch portions were a bit small. Ambiance felt a little more upscale than a standard Japanese place, but not pretentious. Service was very good - waiters were very attentive. We'll be back. We haven't had to make reservations, but that might change as more people discover this place... read more

The prices? Not bad. The food? Pretty good. Service? Extremely slow. I went for a nice dinner on a Friday and they had a lot of parking and seating. I got the 50$ combo to try everything as it comes with a salmon and avocado app, sushi, katsu, and udon. Everything came in courses so it was like a 5 course meal. The app came first and it was a little astringent. The avocado and salmon was just okay. The sushi was not bad. The tuna quality was good but the rice to fish ratio was very off. The hand rolls were also just okay. It was sort of flavorless. The katsu salad was very good! It was crispy and tender but also a little spicy because of the salad. The cold udon was delicious. Definitely recommend the katsu and udon. However, one thing is that the service was extremely slow and disorganized. It was very hard to flag anyone down. There was also a mix up in the kitchen and I think they forgot about our table. All the food came out sporadically. This place was highly recommended by my mechanic in Palisades Park, so I went for lunch. I had the Pork Tenderloin Katsu set which came with soup, edamame, cabbage, and rice. Everything was good, including the dipping sauce and katsu sauce. The pork was perfectly cooked with a light crispy batter. I love the sleek minimalist decor and the service is professional and friendly. However, they use seed oils, which are inflammatory and/or toxic. The server told me that they use Canola oil, to cook the Katsu. Consequently, I would avoid ordering any cooked items here, and try their Sushi. Pork Loin donkatsu was soooo tender and thick - just that it is only one piece and pricey for that one piece !!!!! For $21 !!! I discovered Domoto through pictures on social media of their eye-catching space. If you're into minimalism, you can't get better than the quiet, mellow vibes of this Japanese restaurant. I also came for their noodle bar. There's a window in the dining area that looks directly into the noodle-making room on site. I couldn't resist the opportunity to watch someone put on a live striptease show of my dinner. Sadly, the chef wasn't in when I visited, but trust me when I say the texture of these noodles are unreal. They're dense and chewy, so much that I had to ask if these were rice or flour noodles. It turned out to be made from flour, but it's got a glutinous heft and chew that made me think of rice. The mazeman dish is one of the noodle entrees that employs these freshly made noodles. I wasn't sure how spicy pork, almond butter, butter and scallions would come together, but it absolutely works. The aesthetics of the restaurant alone are worth a visit, but to make things even better, service is top notch. Not only was my server kind, warm, and attentive, but he was open with suggestions on how to better enjoy my meal. For instance, after I dug into my katsu appetizer, he brought over a little dish of a dark grey dressing. "It's a house-made black sesame dressing," he explained. "I personally like it with the cabbage." He was spot on. I was already loving the lightly dressed salad, but a little drizzle of the textured, nutty dressing took it over the top. I've always loved DOMODOMO, so I went into DOMOTO knowing I'd probably enjoy it - even though it's a different, more casual concept. DOMOTO leans into Japanese comfort food (think katsu and hearty noodles), and it absolutely delivers. I would rate this a 10/10, perfect casual sit-down restaurant. Tucked at the end of Closter Plaza, we needed a quick bite during errands so we stopped in. Starting strong: The corn ribs app was a fun start to get our appetite going. Then... the katsu entrees blew us away. Our server let us know that the pork tenderloin comes cooked a little pink, wow it was so juicy and the panko was so light and airy. My ebi shrimp were enormous and they came with several dipping sauces--tonkatsu, tartar and sweet chili. The entrees came with a bowl of rice and a nice big pile of cabbage with a ramekin of black sesame dressing. We came here for dinner around 8:45PM on a Friday. It's very modern with nice interior and clean. The service was great and the servers were very attentive and answered our questions. We ordered the pork tenderloin and the mazemen as our main courses. The mazemen was very tasty, but could've used a little more spice but overall great flavors. The pork tenderloins were so juicy and the pairings that came with it were perfect. For dessert we got the sweet potato creme brulee which we really enjoyed. For some reason I thought I had written about Domoto awhile ago. It's another offshoot from the group behind city classics DOMODOMO and Konban. The corn ribs are dusted with cheese and grilled, so satisfying and very tasty. The pork tenderloin is the katsu to get, it's cooked with a crispy outside but incredible tender in side. If you like the Korea style shrimp katsu, huge black tiger prawns. The mazemen is basically the same one from konban with the meat sauce and butter. They also make the noodles in-house here as well. The spicy tuna roll is somewhat of a cross-between a gimbap and makimono. I like the panko flakes in it with the fluffy egg and pickled radish. We placed our orders but my ebi got sent to the wrong table so I had to wait longer for mine with no compensation which is why it's 4 stars for me. By the time I got my dish, the rest of my party already finished theirs. The corn corn is a must try! Roasted and paired with this wasabi milk syrup, it tastes smoky and since it's cut up, very easy to eat. The hand rolls are great too with generous amounts of fresh fish. The breading they use for the katsu and ebi is insanely addictive. The texture is so crispy and light with the perfect amount of seasoning. I appreciate the variety of sauces I got with my ebi. We tried this restaurant after visiting Domodomo in Jersey City a while ago. There's are some decent kids menu. But Mazemen & Chicken Teriyaki are just too saucy. I expected the rice in all dish to be yummy as its main food is katsu & rolls. The rice, however, in every dish was too mushy. And the staff? Well, none of them checked if our food was good or even came out. My kid's food came out first, then my husband's, and lastly mine when their food was all finished. We visit Closter often; (Movies, Golf Range, Shopping, Dining) We saw Domoto under construction, right behind Landmark Cinemas for months. But it finally opened !!!! So we went on a Saturday without a reservation. It was early evening, and they sat us right away. The place is clean and bright. New. Organized...Almost sterile (in a good way). Efficient waitstaff got us water, and menus, immediately. We started with Corn Corn, which got me on a silly jag like -Jimmy Two Times- in "Goodfellas" (Gonna get the papers, the papers) Corn Corn was Good Good. Take the dipping sauce and pour it over, pour it over the Corn Corn. Ebi Katsu for her, and I had Pork Loin Katsu. (BTW...We always share !!!) The Ebi/Shrimp had giant prawns and Pork Loin Katsu was incredible. Both meat and breading were light as a feather. Plenty of dipping sauces for both dishes, made the meal a mini adventure. We finished it off with a Sweet Potato Crème Brûlée. (recommended by the server). It was ok. But needed more sweet and less potato. Can't want to go again. Apparently their lunch menu is slightly different than dinner menu , the famous corn ribs are not offered during lunch time which is slightly disappointing for me as I really wanted to try that dish, I guess I will just have to come back again for dinner again! Overall, this place deserves a solid 4 stars, I love the clean, bright and minimalist vibe of the restaurant ( it feels very Japanese and very MUJI ). I ordered miso salmon set that comes with rice , edamame, soup, salad as side dish, I like the presentation of the food, but the miso salmon's sauce is a bit sweet and I also don't really like they add a lot of yellow mustard on the side. This appears to be a popular dish but I probably won't order it again. Husband ordered Chicken Katsu set and this dish really blew me off my socks !! This is my experience at Domoto in Closter Plaza, Closter. I called the restaurant to get directions. A host named Maya answered the phone. I asked her for the location. She was very vague and not clear in explaining so I asked to speak to someone else at the restaurant. She put me on hold and after 10 minutes, it got disconnected. I called again and Maya answered the phone. I said I had called earlier and was on hold and got hung up. She said "you hung up on me." I thought that was a rude comment to a customer trying to locate the restaurant. I asked her the location again and she said she was not familiar with the Closter town. I walked from J. Crew to the separate building where Domoto is located. I was a little upset at the way she handled the phone call but decided to try the food anyway. I walked in and there she was. Stoic, stiff, unfriendly and unhelpful. I looked at her and asked for a menu to take out. I ordered a chicken cutlet bento box. It came out in about 15 minutes. I took it and left. When I got to the car, I wanted to double check the food. Chopsticks and napkins were missing. The bento box which included rice, chicken cutlet, shredded cabbage(very dry) and edamame(half cooked) was $24.52 including tax. By the way, they charge an extra $3 for take out so beware. It would be nice to have the same price whether dine in or take out. There was a very very tiny sauce for the chicken. In fact, the sauce was in such a small container, after a few bites of chicken with the sauce, the sauce was gone! A little pricey for that kind of set. I was not happy with the experience. The next day, I called the manager who's name is "Kwang Ma" to explain about my experience. He said that it is "illegal" for them to provide chopsticks and napkins unless the customer asked for it. The law changed as of last year in NJ and I was not aware of the new law. I also find his choice of vocabulary "illegal" to be a bit harsh. It would have been nice to have a sign on the wall saying that I have to request utensils. Why wouldn't I want chopsticks and napkins? They were always included. Anyway, his tone was not apologetic and insisted on their standing and he was arguing on a technicality. I don't think that is a good way to run a business. Sometimes you have to learn to be more flexible in providing customer service. After all, this is a service business. I wasn't asking for the moon or the stars or my money back. They can continue to provide third tier service, with second tier food quality and puny sauce servings. I guess they don't need business. I won't be returning to their overpriced food. Regarding the meal: Portioning: The chicken cutlet came with a very small amount of sauce that was insufficient for the portion of meat. Quality: The shredded cabbage was dry. This is my new fave spot for Japanese food in Bergen county! Everything was absolutely delightful and the servers were super helpful. The miso salmon, corn app, salmon tataki, sushi platter and uni, and the katsu were all sooo good and perfectly cooked, nicely presented, and fresh. I also thought it was so sweet of them to have utensils that are meant for babies, since we forgot ours, and they gave us a squash puree that's normally served with the salmon, on the house for the baby! Why have we not experienced this magnificent place before?! We had dinner at Domoto Katsu and Roll. Walking in, we loved the comfortable and serene vibe and already knew this was going to be a great place to try out. For appetizers, we had Corn Corn, Ebi Sando, and Miso soup for each our our meals. The Corn Corn - perfection with the roasted corn and the sauce provided was good. The Ebi Sando (close to Shrimp sandwiches) was my favorite appetizer. You can taste bits of the shrimp jammed in with other vegetables. It was so good. Our Miso soup was tasty and hot - I wanted more tofu floating around and probably the first time spinach was used in a miso soup. I had the spinach Udon. There's more options on the lunch menu and you get sides with your set meal as opposed to no set meal options for dinner. We ordered family style so I got to try a bit of everything. There's a lot to like about Domoto. The restaurant has a modern contemporary vibe to it. The interiors are minimalistic and everything looks very new and clean. I tried the Omurice and spicy tuna roll. I would say the food here is Japanese/Korean fusion. The Omurice was tasty, but at $19 I think it's overpriced. The spicy tuna roll was really a kimbap and not a traditional sushi roll, which threw me off. In the same section of the menu they have a chef's signature sushi, which is unmistakably traditional Japanese nigiri, but the sushi rolls themselves are more akin to kimbaps. So I thought that was confusing. My first experience was kind of a mixed bag, but I do want to go back and try their other menu items. Was really excited to try/have a location near me, as both Domodomo and Konban have been on my city food bucket list! The menu is diverse, ranging from fusion appetizers and sushi/sashimi to katsu, noodles/udon, and rice dishes - so there's a little something for everyone. Wow! Such a great addition to northern Jersey area. I haven't tried their sister restaurant, konban, but have tried Domodomo. Domoto's menu incorporates highlights from both restaurants, at a mid-tier, everyday price point, instead of the elevated NYC experience. The restaurant is still very minimal, clean yet homey. We tried a bit of everything- corn ribs, katsu, mazemen, salmon-don and the toro roll. My favorites were the corn ribs and katsu. I got the spicy tuna roll and chicken katsu and both were phenomenal. I also got the omurice which was good but my least favorite out of the 3. This is owned by the same person as DomoDomo and Konban. It was busy at like 2 PM on a Saturday but I got a table without a reservation. I'm guessing for dinner, you need a reservation? read more

Wow! Everything was clean, fresh and delicious! It tasted like a home cooked meal. The corn ribs are a must! (We ordered 3 because it was such a hit!) the tenderloin katsu was fantastic and so was the mazemen. For dessert, we loved the sweet potato creme brûlée! We were a party of 9 so I called in advance to make a reservation and they were able to fit us! The service was also excellent! My partner and I went on a spur of the moment date night as I have had a terrible week. He decided to bring me to Domoto. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, clean, with two bathrooms. After looking at the menu and being indecisive since everything looked stellar, I let my partner take the reins on ordering. We started with the corn ribs, edamame, and the omurice. Each dish was different, but delicious in it's own way. The corn ribs were topped with a cheese powder reminiscent to the powder you stir in while making kraft mac and cheese - this combo worked as the corn had smoky flavor. The edamame was tossed in pesto. The combo was good, but as an Italian woman who grew up in such a household, it needed a touch more of parmesan. Then again, the edamame had a nice flavor and I could be considered too hypocritical of their pesto. The winner of the 3 would the omurice. The rice underneath was cooked to perfection, with onions, a mushroom gravy and those eggs . I'd be back just for that. Our mains consisted of pork tenderloin and mazemen. The pork was deliciously tender, served with wasabi, salt, and katsu sauce. I opted for the sauce, it elevated the pork. The mazemen, you could tell, was freshly made with homemade noodles. It packed a spice that was enjoyable. Domoto gave me a considerable amount of sauce that you could find me eating with a spoon towards the end of the meal. Our server, Valentina, who provided us with refills and prompt service, asked us if we would like to opt for dessert. We decided after such a great experience, we would stay. We ordered the sweet potato creme brulee that was literally creme brulee inside a sweet potato. It was so good that my partner and I devoured the whole thing, skin included. We saw many tables ordering bingsoo next to us, which also looked like a delight. We decided the next time we come, we will try it! Check out was prompt and courteous.
