    Vegetable donburi

My son recommended this place. It's interesting in that it's located in the middle of a Minneapolis neighborhood. There was ample seating inside and outside. Ordering at the counter was quick and efficient. They serve primary rice or noodle based Japanese dishes and not sushi or sashimi. My youngest son got the salmon onigiri combo. The rest of us got different variations of donburi with chicken, pork and vegetable curry. It was a very savory and satisfying meal.

The food was good and a more modern take on traditional dishes. The menu has a lot of selection. It's a great place to eat family style to try a few different side dishes. Some of the bites of onigiri were a bit fishy tasting. Staff was overall knowledgeable, but service was not overly friendly. It's order at the counter service. They have a great patio space and open to garage style doors for the inside. Pricing were fair and asian portions. The cauliflower was so good and I would come back just for this dish. It's a good restaurant for main stream culture to experience this style of food. It's good for small/midsized group in the summer. It would be a great date spot.

Fantastic local neighborhood restaurant! Each bite was full of so much flavor, the menu can be hard to understand if you've not been here before, but they are very helpful at me through it.

Great place - don't miss it. Dine inside or out. On street parking was easily available. We both ordered the Onigiri Combo Meal and I strongly recommend it. Pick any 3 onigiri (some have a slight upcharge). The soup and salad are very good too. It was hard to choose our Onigiri as there are several options. My husband loves Spam and really enjoyed that one. The fried chicken was a fun one too. Plus we tried several seafood options. The Onigiri are pretty large so this makes a budget friendly meal.

Overall well done neighborhood Japanese restaurant that stays true to Japanese vs Japanese American food.

A pretty trendy space that sells an assortment of Japanese food, drinks (including alcoholic), and desserts. The music inside was pretty loud, but chill if you like emo, and the staff were super friendly. You order at the register and they'll give you a number if you eat in. Water and utensils were at a station near the door. The food didn't come out super fast, but I felt the wait was reasonable. Orders: Tori Karaage (3 pc): Each piece of chicken was about the size of my palm. The chicken was moist and had a nice crispy outside. Served on a bed of greens with a sauce that kind of reminded me of a miso salad dressing (?). Regardless, it was good. Next time, I'll definitely be ordering this with a side of white rice to cut a bit of the saltiness, but it was still good on its own. Ume Onigiri: I love umeboshi, which is a sour pickled plum. This one was great. The rice was also salted well, and the nori was thin and crispy. I will say the ume is definitely not a taste for everyone. I have quite a few friends who dislike ume in general, so just be aware it's a different kind of flavor, haha. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more things on their menu. I'm a fan~

I think the establishment's strength is onigiri because they not only have a variety of different toppings, but also have reasonable prices that would allow economical planning. Since it is located in a residential area, I can see how people who live around South Minneapolis can easily visit for a quick bite. As much as the onigiri had good flavor, I felt like other dishes were more mediocre. For example, the Buta Don had pork that texturally didn't go well with the rice because it wasn't a part of the pig that was the most tender or succulent. The chicken karaage had too much creamy sauce and the chicken itself didn't have as much flavor, as much as it was juicy. I would recommend visitors to capitalize on its onigiri supplies for the most part. A positive aspect I would mention was that I found the sakeru gummy and nagai sakeru gummy (long long man) in the store, and I instantly got it and made a video of myself tearing up the candy. I loved that for sure.

Great location in the Hiawatha neighborhood. There's plenty of free street parking nearby as well. The patio they have is perfect for a nice sunny summer/fall day. They even have a water bowl for doggies, which is considerate. This is a casual order at the counter/self service restaurant so it's perfect for those days you want a 'healthier' alternative from fast food restaurants. We ordered the salmon poke combo meal the beef udon. The combo meal came with a ongiri aka a rice ball of your choice and I got the perilla leaf one and was expecting it to be a whole leaf vs tiny little pieces, which made it difficult to taste the flavor. The beef udon was okay, the noodles were too soft to my liking and the broth was lacking depth. It was nice to finally try this place but I don't know if I would go back often. The food was a bit of a miss for me.

Okome House is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the entire Twin Cities. This place is somewhat unique in that, unlike many other Japanese eateries that specialize in Sushi or Ramen, Okome house has a very unique menu that specializes in onigiri, with dozens of flavors. You can also opt for an udon or donburi (rice bowl) dish, but onigri is where Okome house really shines. The best deal here is the "onigiri combo," which comes with three onigiri of your choice and two sides (I highly recommend the wakame salad and the curry). Everything I've tried here is amazing, and my young daughter loves it too. The vast majority of their dishes are also dairy-free. They have a small selection of beer and sake, and even have a happy hour every day with great deals on drinks. The inside is cute, and when the weather is nice, the outdoor patio is amazing. Service is usually fairly quick.

The food was great! It was fresh and very tasty. The service was friendly and efficient. However, I downgraded it a star because the restaurant was understaffed. They frequently didn't have enough water or glasses at the filling station and the dishes were not bussed frequently, so the stack of dishes got huge. The atmosphere was cute and welcoming.

This place is cute, neighborhood restaurant. We went in the evening and the place just shined. I'm a fan of hand rolls and wanted to try the onigiri. The restaurant looked busy but people were in line to pick up their togo orders. We were seated in the back. They offered wine, beer, and sake.

I wish we could see some of the distinct ingredients alone besides the tofu as it was a bit too blended for me. I liked how unique this ramen was!! The chicken karaage basket had the most addicting trio of sauces - yuzu mayo, nori ranch; and honey mustard. The yuzu mayo was so light and citrusy, and I could practically drink the nori ranch. The fries were shoestring and perfectly crispy. The issue lies in the chicken karaage - it almost felt burnt, and it was quite dry inside. The chicken age gyoza were yummy. I did love the crispness and the tangy kamikaze dipping sauce! Service is efficient!

Drinks: The Last Samurai cocktail & the Imposter Among Us mocktail were both delightful. Love the unique drink options, and the two we had were executed beautifully. Sushi: Unfortunately, the sushi was a bit disappointing. We had the hotate yuzu, Suzuki oshizushi, tamago nigiri, and the futomaki. The rice was unfortunately undercooked, and also too lightly seasoned. The tamago was alright, the futomaki was very good though. Dessert: The yuzu custard - one of my favorite desserts I've eaten in a long time. Definitely the best thing we had and I would absolutely get it again. Service: Our service was pretty good. I did watch one of the other servers grab soup spoons by the part you eat from and then bring them to a table which was concerning. This was, without a doubt, the best sushi and service I have ever experienced…read more I enjoy new experiences. Before Saturday I had never heard of Omakase. For those of you reading this that are in that boat, it is well worth it. Omakase is a five-course sampler of the best sushi they have to offer. Calling it a sampler does a disservice to the artistry and mastery of the craft that to a very select few is sushi. Bask (I hope I spelled that right) is one such master. My buddy and I came in for a fun visit to the Twin Cities. On an impulse, he suggested sushi, and my instinct was to check Yelp. I'm glad I did. We sat at the bar after a short wait, where we met Emma. Emma is a bringer and friendly bar tender who happens to love sushi. We read through the menu and saw that Omakase had a whole page devoted to it. Emma let us know that the chef and cook staff dismantle whole fresh fish frequently, ensuring their fish meets their high standard. That one fact made the decision easy. I wish I had taken pictures of the food. You'll have to take my word for it that each serving was a work of art, some in their simplicity, others arranged with delicate touches of culinary flair. Without pictures of the dishes, the best I can do are two examples. The first course was three different cuts from the same ahi tuna, featuring the leanest portion, a medium portion and a fatty portion of the same fish. Having fresh fish and experiencing such variety from the same animal was eye opening. The other example was the uni. Both of us had tried it at other establishments and neither of us recalled our respective experiences fondly. Here, the flavor and texture was what I was told I should expect with uni. If I had known it was part of the meal before ordering, I probably wouldn't have gone with it. Now, I'm open to having it again, and if it's here I'll enjoy it again. The meal was perfectly portioned for my buddy and myself to feel full, but not stuffed. The flavors and textures were perfect. Words fail to reach the feelings invoked. We may have just been ruined on sushi. I eagerly await my next trip to your beautiful city, if only to visit Billy Sushi again.

I got the Party Girl this last time and it was good but pretty boozy. The gold flak on the top of it was a bit over the top for me, but whatever. My friend got the Raspberry Beret, which was delicious and obviously appropriately themed for Minneapolis and being down the street from First Ave. The restaurant also has an impressive selection of sake, Japanese beer, etc. -Apps: We love the yuzu tuna and have gotten it both times. This last time we also got the salmon carpaccio, which was also delicious. I love age dashi tofu, and this version was good - but not the best (Oragimi has a better one). We found the broth to be delicious, but the one big chunk of tofu was a bit unwieldy, and the coating was a bit gummy. I would pass on that one next time. -Sushi-wise: Nigiri are amazing here - delicious, perfectly cut fish, generous portions, rice that is often still warm. No complaints. For rolls, we love the Big Blue Wave and the Toro Mania. We also ordered the Fancy & Furious, which was less delicious to me but still pretty tasty.
