I have been to Old Bank over the years and always appreciated the great hair cuts I have received. This place caters to all ages but is especially great for guys from their 20's on up. Always great music and conversations with the stylists, I have a local barber I see regularly these days but they weren't comfortable with a special request I had after dying my hair so I gave Old Bank a call. I went to see Dante on a Wednesday at noon and he was not only a pleasure to talk to but did a great job giving me a Mohawk which I have gotten a ton of complements on. They are very affordable and even provide straight razor shaves. Genuinely one of the best places to get a haircut in Baltimore. read more

A staple of Baltimore! With their covid 19 measures, I feel incredibly safe getting my hair cut. (My barbers wash their hands before and after cutting my hair, they take temperature readings, we're all wearing masks, and everything is sanitized). They also do a great job cutting my hair. Spent an hour and a half waiting for a haircut after waiting 3 months to grow my hair out after the last time I got my hair mangled at Old Bank. Decided to give them another shot after the last time I got a haircut there and was very unhappy with the results. Once again, I asked for a simple fade and about a half inch off the top. My hair was barely faded up - it's all the same length around the side and back, and the barber took more like an inch off the top. Now it looks like I have a helmet of hair. I never know what to say when the barber is like "Is this good?" and it's just not at all but there's a huge line and you don't want to be a dick about how they didn't listen and now it's too short to fix. Like, "No, it's not good, but I guess now I'm gonna pay you now because you've already moved on to the next customer." Very upsetting experience on multiple occasions from a repeat customer. read more

I have been going to this place for years despite it being kind of far from my house and always a long wait. With the new booking systems post pandemic I made a choice to try a place closer to home that often has impossibly long waits. That was a huge mistake. Old Bank takes COVID very serious. They follow all the guidelines and everyone is masked and stays masked. It feels safe getting your hair cut here, which is not something I could say about the other spot I tried. There has never been a question about the quality of the haircut at Old Bank, always top of the line. Went there on a Saturday morning close to opening time and the wait was about an hour and half. The guy at the door was very respectful and gave me a good approximation. Took my name down. Went to get coffee which there are numerous options to choose from around that area. Came back. Sat for about 15 min. They do an amazing job and it's only $25 for beard and haircut. Best haircuts I have ever had. Place reminds me of my great uncle's barbershop down in NC. Except, of course, the tattoos are not a Marine Corps emblem or a dancing girl. And the art on the walls. And the general coolness. But there is a distinct vibe that makes it more than a haircut. Unfortunately, Old Bank's become Hair Cuttery with handlebar mustaches and tattoos. Ya gotta give 'em props for their runaway success, but they've added so many chairs and so many new cutters that a) it's almost impossible to go there twice and not have someone completely new cutting your hair without waiting for an hour+, and b) it's increasingly difficult to get any consistency in cut. If you can get Dan, Bubs, Jut, or Young you've got a good chance of walking out happy. The rest are a crap shoot. Not to say their new staff is bad, but it's become way more hit and miss as to whether I can get a truly quality cut or not. Last time in, got yet another new guy I'd never seen before. Didn't listen to a damn thing I told him, cut way too short. Ended up with a cow-lick sticking out of the back of my head for two weeks. read more

I moved to Baltimore at the beginning of July and, on the original recommendation of a friend, tried out Old Bank. After my experiences with the past three months' worth of haircuts, though, I'm probably not going to come back. I've never gotten a truly "bad" haircut (I get a side part with a disconnect on the right and a blend on the left, tapered down on the sides), but I've only liked what I walked out with on one out of 5 occasions (Young 4 times, and John once). I would diagnose the problem as a combination of three issues: 1) Communication. I'm not a barber, and so while I can describe in general terms what I am looking for, I don't "speak the language". In my last city, my barber would spend the first couple minutes after I sat down without any tools in her hands, looking at me, confirming what I was asking for, and describing what she was going to do in layman's terms. From both my own haircuts and observing several dozen interactions while waiting, this is uncommon at Old Bank. 2) Attitude. I actually really dig the vibe, with the music, reading material, decor, and the overall "tattoo shop" feel. But you can have that appearance while making customers feel welcome and not as if they are an inconvenience. It's ironic that their price board says, to paraphrase, "come in, grab a beer, and remember, don't be a jerk". There are few smiles on either the barbers' or customers' faces, and it honestly feels like the Soup Nazi episode from Seinfeld - don't screw up the protocol or you may not be served. Another reviewer aptly diagnosed the staff as "convinced that this is the pinnacle of cool". 3) Rushing. Part of the cut quality issue might have to do with a rush to get through the large crowd that usually is waiting when I go in (after work on W, R, or F), but that wouldn't be much justification, as the judgment is based on the product of work. After a haircut, I have to live with how I look for another three weeks, while a barber can move onto the next customer. It feels like a lot of the barbers in there are concerned with getting out of work and going home, rather than putting in the extra effort to make sure the customer is completely satisfied. I am going to try other spots in Baltimore, as the quality of an Old Bank haircut is too hit-or-miss to deal with the headaches that come from their customer service. read more

I drive here once every two weeks from Columbia, MD just to get my hair cut. That should say a lot right off the bat... A few tips: - Expect to wait. These guys are good at what they do and it shows. Always a line, usually pretty crowded, no appointments taken, get used to it. - Bring cash. Again, BRING CASH. They don't take cards...$20 covers a basic cut and tip - Walk in, find a seat (if there is one), grab a beer from the fridge (they're free), and relax until it's your turn. Other than that get ready to get the best haircut you've ever had. I'm serious. These guys (I'm partial to Bubs and Jut) know how to cut some damn hair! No appointments, that's too elitist. Walk in and hang till its your turn. Decorated in a postmodern industrial hovel style, you can peruse vintage men's nudie magazines and sip a beer while you wait. Nice vibe immediately upon entering. The items on every station look like the shelves in my bathroom so that was comfortable. Had a seat and was offered a nice cold Boh during my brief wait for a chair. Jut gave me an excellent cut. He spent the time to make sure it was right before even asking me if it looked good. I even got my choice of aftershave for my freshly shaven neck! It's so hard to find a real barber anymore that can give you a proper classic cut and knows the value of pomade. $15 for the cut and I couldn't have walked out happier. I've had three haircuts here from three different barbers, and all three have been awesome. They ask questions before cutting too much off, they shave your neck, they bullshit about the city, music, whatever, and they make sure you're into your cut before you leave. I'd love to give them five stars but I can't get a shave on the weekends. Actually I've been told I can only get a shave between 10-4 on weekdays, which makes me not able to ever get a shave here as I work between 8 and 6 on weekdays. So... yeah. The one luxury I look for in a good barber to put them over the top I can't have. That was disappointing. However, if you just want a cut at a great price, go here. They treat you right. They're quick, chatty, and all around awesome. They're so awesome if they said I could get a shave only at 9 on a Sunday morning, id be there at 8:55. And they'd get that fifth star. read more

And when you do sit down, it's all business. I am usually in and out in like 20min. You can chit-chat if you want to, but I got stuff to do and making small talk with my barber isn't on my to-do list like at a "salon" where the 22-year old wants to tell me about how faded she got in Miami last weekend. Old Bank's guys ask how you want it cut and get to work. BOOM! All for $17. My barber, Young, is great. I am so happy I found this place and I no longer need to spend $45 and an hour to have my hair cut by a "stylist".
