I absolutely love getting haircuts here. I've tried many barber shops in the area, and this is one of the best, in my opinion. So why only 3 stars? Mixed messaging. The shop proudly touts that it's women-owned, employs a non-binary barber/stylist, and displays stickers on the door indicating that they support the trans community and other marginalized groups. This implies that the owners value social equity and justice and champion the inherent worth of every human being. However, the bathroom and walls are decorated with pictures of naked ladies. This is utterly degrading for women and sends the exact opposite message than the first- that sexual objectification of human beings is accepted and sanctioned. I believe this is morally questionable. I hope the owners take this to heart and remove those pictures. Then I'll happily change my review to 5 stars! read more

I am in Baltimore for a scientific meeting and my barber back home in the Bay Area is traveling in Vietnam for the next month. I looked up nearby barbers and Beatnik popped up on my YELP feed highly rated so I wandered over for a walk in appointment. Four chairs operating in this very stylish looking modern barber establishment. I signed in and was seated in less than 15 minutes. Got a great haircut that took close to 40-45 minutes using scissors, razor and flat edge razor and it came out nice. Fairly priced at $24/regular cut and wish they had an outpost in the Bay Area ! Got the worst haircut of my life there on Friday. I just needed a very minor trim off the back, less then an inch, and maybe the ends cleaned up, and the rest left alone, and the person cutting the hair turned me around so I couldn't see what was going on and really butchered most of it. Been here many times and it's always a great quick haircut for cheap. They moved to a new location about a year ago and it's much more spacious than the old one. The staff are super friendly and professional and the overall vibe is super relaxed. After walking in and having my name passed over on the list for over an hour I asked what was going on and they explained that some people get appointments some don't. I left without getting a haircut--an absurd waste of time due to poor organization and management. Nice shop, four chairs, some waiting. I've been looking for a real barber for some time - one that does a decent job and hasn't moved their cousin or sister into the back of the store to do nails. I've tried a few, but haven't been satisfied with my cut - the last guy did a real hack-job on my head. I just about gave up and went back to the estrogen sauna that is Envy because I knew I could get a good haircut there. Beatnik's gonna be my new shop. Even with a wait, I was in and out in about a half-hour. They asked the right questions, gave a good cut, cleaned up everything real nice, and done. BEST. HAIRCUT. Recently moved to the area and frankly, I've had enough bad hair experiences to be terrified of new hair cutters. Buuuuuuut.... I decided to trust Yelp and head over to Beatnik's. Aaand I may post pics later, but for now, I'm still enjoying my cut (a simple bob, but well balanced and thinned). Here's the deal: you walk up a few steps into a skinny brick-walled dive with paintings on the wall and barbers at the ready. No wait. I sat right down and got lucky to find myself in Heather's chair. Heather is THE BEST. We had a fun conversation while she did her thang and I relaxed feeling like I was in good hands. Aaaand I was. She did a great job, and the total cut was $18. One of the best cuts I've ever had, even though there was only maybe 10 minutes of a blowdry. (I'm sure this is one way they keep the costs down). Loved it. Can't beat the price, the friendly atmosphere, and the professionalism. Definitely coming back. read more

Gonna buck the trend here. A previous yelper complained about the cut he got from one of the barbers, Myrna. I took a chance and let her cut my hair (she was also the only one available). It came out just fine. Nice, actually. Only problem was that she wasn't keen on talking. Not a big deal, but I felt a little miffed I didn't get any barbershop talk. I looked up this place to get a haircut 4 days before my wedding. Why would I try out a new place before such a big event??? Well for one, I work in Charm City Baltimore now and two, it is impossible to make it to my regular place without taking a day off! So I did what every informed person does - look up barbers on Yelp and zeroed in on Beatnick. This place is in a quiet little street close to Inner Harbor. Walking in I felt as if I had entered a frat house - guys in shorts or jeans cutting hair! Funky mix of music emanating from iPod dock set the scene. No signing in, etc - just a 'sup nod from the stylist closest to the door. I just grabbed the next available chair and awaited my turn - the order of customers being set was old school - you kept track of who came after you did! Most of the customers looked like regulars as the barbers were picking up on conversation from previous visits! After a wait of 15 minutes, I was up for the haircut. The process itself was quick and professional - little bit of what I was looking for and then he suggested to keep it a bit longer than what I liked so that pictures of me at my wedding don't have me looking like a newly shaved bird! He was right - pictures looked good :) The entire experience was definitely worth the time and money! read more

Quality men's haircuts for $16! I always select the barber, Derek (my name twin). I am always grateful when a barber/stylist don't give me a bowl haircut---do people think just because I am Asian American that I want a bowl cut?! I had some younger woman cut my hair once and she made me look like a school boy. Derek always does a good job---the haircut looks good instantly (you don't have to wait a week for your hair to look good). I've been coming to Beatnik since I moved to Baltimore a few years ago and love the service. Be prepared to wait during the typical rush times, but there is never an extremely long cue. Sometimes they bring out numbers to keep it organized. I've gotten cuts from pretty much every barber there but I must say my go to is Derek. Derek takes his time with his haircuts and makes sure it's what you want along with great conversations/ recommendations. I get my hair cut about every 3-4 weeks and can never complain about his work. Some people come into the barber shop expecting to get a cut that will magically change the way their hair grows; it's a damn hair cut not genetic reconstruction. If you're looking for a good precise cut, go to Derek for sure. I can honestly say he has given me some of the best haircuts I have ever gotten. Let the professionals do their work and if it's not exactly what you like, let them know instead of cowering behind a bad review. read more

So I came back after work and there were two barbers talking, but only one was cutting hair. Kinda never-wracking when you have to wait. Under such conditions. Great neo-classic barbershop. Classic in the sense that it is an old-fashioned four chair, no appointment type, place. The wait is never a problem, because it leaves time to kibbitz or catch up on the ample supply of magazines or newpapers and listen to a selection of well-curated music. Classic too in the sense that the haricuts are inexpensive, the barbers well-trained, and haircuts are finished off with a straight-edge razor to the neck. The "neo" comes in with the cool vibe, the lack of muzak, the paintings of John Waters adorning the wall and the coffee-tinned ceiling. The haricuts themselves, regardless of barber, are universally good. Well worth avoiding the mall and supporting a local business. read more

Until I discovered this place, I was content with a trip to the local Hair Cuttery and roll the dice to see if I'd be happy with my cut or not. Well, the rules just changed. This place lives up to their tagline, "Where cool never goes out of style." They've received City Paper's Best of Baltimore for Best Men's Haircut every year they've been open. No matter your style, they'll make sure you leave happy about your haircut. Suddenly, I'm a guy who will never get his hair cut anywhere else. These guys (and gal) are cool as hell, have kick-ass music pumping from the iPod, and some wild artwork hanging on the walls. I've been going to this place for almost a year. Coffee and a haircut for $15.... Need I say more. I don't, but I will. This is the kind of barbershop that has barbers. The barbers are as well suited at conversation as they are cutting hair. The iPod cranks out obscure tunes that make the atmosphere relaxing and inviting. My hair cut was finished off with the warm shaving cream and shave on the neck. When I saw the Best of Baltimore's Best Men's Haircut honors, I figured I'd give this place a shot. After having jumped around to multiple higher end salons for $40 haircuts, I still hadn't found a place I was consistently happy with. Until Beatnik. Came at 2pm in the afternoon on a weekday and it was quick in and out. The woman knew exactly what I wanted, didn't need to be told to "please use scissors", and quickly got to cutting. 25 minutes later I had one of the best cuts I've seen. She followed up with product and a warm shaving cream on the back of my neck. The price was only $18. For the quality, friendly local atmosphere, speed, and price, this place is quickly a favorite. read more

To me it's hard to find a real barber shop. In a world where barbershops have given way to franchised super salons and apathetic hairdressers this place holds its ground with good old fashioned personality and service. Everyone should have a good barber and a good bar tender in their lives and this place can cut a nice head of hair while providing you atmosphere, conversation, and damn fine music. I recently started wearing my hair clippered close on the sides and back and found myself needing to get my hair cut every 2 weeks in order to keep it looking right. Whenever I'm in Baltimore City and feeling a little scruffy, I make my way over to Beatnik. They are offering exactly what I'm looking for. I've never waited more than 15 minutes. They know new and retro looks as soon as you tell them what you want. The clipper work and blending is top notch and I love the straight razor neck shave. I get complimented on my hair cut at least once a day. All that for under $20 adds up to a big win for me. read more

When I first moved here, I tried the haircuttery, because I didn't know where else to go. they butchered my hair. i tried a barbershop out in the county, they didn't listen one iota to what i wanted. went to a priceier place, got an ok cut, but for way too much money. After a mixture of experiences at beatnik, I wasn't so sure about the place. I gave in one more go today and am really happy with the results. Of the 4 barbers that work there, I have gotten my hair cut by 3 of them and have been really happy with the way both Heather and Derick snipped. Like usual there was a 5 minute or so wait which I don't mind at all. They work on the traditional barber method of no appointments, just getting whoever is available next which is a good thing as it means overall less wait and no need to worry about making an appointment. Heather was great today. I am usually not one for conversation, but just like Derick, Heather has a knack for filling up the time your sitting there with easy conversation that doesn't feel forced. I ended up with a hair cut that looks good, was pretty inexpensive and overall a pretty painless experience. I didn't have a great experience with another barber there on two occasions (see my last review), so you may need to find the one or two that work best for you but overall beatnik is hard to beat. read more

I think it's funny that people write such lengthy diatribes on the subject of haircuts. Yelp has given way too many people the idea that other people (a) actually care about their life and their emotional attachments to a particular event and (b) desire a full back story leading up to said event. Anyhow, Beatnik Barbershop gave me a good haircut. Actually, a really good haircut. I've only been once but I will return. Myrna cut my hair. She was fast and pleasant, and didn't attempt to make awkward small talk--just got down to business. The decor is cool, definitely suits the name. The barbers don't look anything like barbers. The one guy closest to the door had a scruffy beard and covered his hair with a knit hat. I don't know why but I liked that. That's all. Good place. I visited Beatnik Barbershop about a year ago I think. At that point, I had been getting my haircut at Floyd's in Canton, but wanted to switch to an actual barbershop. It's not that Floyd's was bad, it's just that I wanted to start going to a shop where there are men cutting men's hair. I did some researching and decided that Beatnik would be the first place that I tried. My haircut here was not bad, but the fellow who cut my hair didn't really listen to what I said when I sat down. I made it very clear that I didn't want it too short. I said that I'd rather have to come in more often for a quick trim as opposed to having to wait almost two months before I felt that I needed it cut again. Sadly, the guy didn't get that message, and it was literally two months before I needed to get my hair cut again. At that point, I had found a different place to go (Baltimore Barber's Lounge) and that's where I've been going ever since. Beatnik is very reasonable when it comes to the price, but at a very base level, I expect that someone's going to listen to me when I tell them how I want my hair. I had already had a bad enough experience with some other places in Baltimore and DC that I decided to not go back to a place if I didn't get the cut I wanted. So in this case, these guys lost out on a regular customer because of it. If I had had a different experience and this guy actually listened to me, I could have been a regular customer. read more

Since I had just moved to town and not changed my hair style since the late 80's, I welcomed Derick's updated do that he gave me. I'm a Beatnik Barber regular now. And everybody like my new hair cut. Came in yesterday for the first time, and I will definitely return. I have very curly hair which can sometimes be difficult, and it was cut exactly how I wanted, without even knowing exactly what I wanted. I believe it was Brittney who tamed my mane, but I can't be 100% sure. She was very nice and sweet, and engaged conversation to help pass the time. She said she has two daughters with curly hair like mine, and obviously knew how to handle it. I was very pleased that when I showed up, unannounced, at around 4:15, I was immediately seated and treated to a very nice haircut. I have visited two other barbers in the neighborhood, and although I have nothing negative to say about them, this place was great. For $18 (plus a generous tip, of course), it was a very pleasant experience that made the task of a haircut simple and enjoyable. In the words of The Terminator, "I'll be back." read more
