We wanted barbecue for dinner and it would have been easy for us to just take out from our usual place, which is always good. But for some reason, I decided to check YELP. And we are really glad that I did. The food from Old Blue BBQ is amazing. We ordered way too much (which is not unusual for us) and everything exceeded our expectations. We started with Moinks- their appetizer consisting of meatballs wrapped in bacon and covered with barbecue sauce. As delicious as it sounds. We ordered ribs. Perfectly cooked with a char covering really tender meat that fell off the bones. Not fatty or greasy like other barbecue joints' ribs are. They were basted with Old Blue's Texas Espresso Sauce, a spicy, sweet alternative to the usual sauces. (They have an assortment of sauces available, ranging from traditional to vinegar-based to Alabama White.) We also ordered the Chopped Brisket Calzone, a baked dough pocket stuffed with brisket, Texas Espresso, cabbage slaw, and mac and cheese. It was accompanied by a side of pizza sauce that we didn't even bother to open. The flavors were so bold and the combination of textures so perfect that we didn't want to take a chance of ruining it. We ordered sides (because what is barbecue without sides). The greens are spicy, cooked with chipotle peppers. The mac and cheese is creamy and rich without being overwhelming, But the miracle side was the beans. I hate baked beans! But I could not get enough of these. They're made with peaches (!) and they're sweet and smoky. If I had to find a criticism it would be that the sides are small. But next time, we're just going to order 2 of each. Note that Old Blue BBQ is primarily a catering company and, at least for right now, it's only open for take-out on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They're located in an industrial park on Eisenhower Avenue and they only have a small awning that's easy to miss. But it's well worth driving around the parking lot a few times! read more

My wife and I were married earlier this summer, and through her Arlington contacts we were fortunate enough to find Old Blue BBQ and have them cater our outdoor wedding. We simply can't say enough positive things about Kelly and Stephen - they and their staff worked tirelessly to make sure we felt comfortable about every detail, and they over-delivered on everything promised; it was a flawless event for over 200 guests. Most impressive was the food itself: the sea scorpions and bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers were crowd favorites, but even the simple yet elegant cheese and fruit plates got rave reviews. The pulled pork and brisket were some of the best we've ever had, and the mac n' cheese was absolutely perfect. Been meaning to get around to this for awhile. I think this was the "serves 15" platter. I can't remember, but I do know I thought hmmmm is this enough? And it turned out to absolutely be plenty. And it was ready on time, delicious, and overall a great experience. I thought it was also well priced. I would like to say that I am highly disappointed in the ribs with little meat and days old brisket that they charged extra for. It was super thin, hard, and dry. It's so dry that the bbq sauce didn't help, and it's so hard it will hurt your teeth. Don't waste your time ordering sides bcuz they are super small for 4 bucks and taste like it was leftovers from another catering. Just simply choose a different bbq spot. Pulled pork eggrolls were greasy, and pork was dry as well. Don't even offer takeout if it's going to be dry and old. Don't even waste people's time and money. Tried this over the weekend since we live a couple blocks from this place. Service is super friendly and helpful. Just call in your order and call them when you get there. We actually ordered right outside the place. It was our first time and I think the owner/chef saw us outside and just took our order. We got the brisket and Brussels. Sooooooo good. My wife and I hired Old Blue to cater our backyard wedding, pig roast, BBQ and bar services for 130 people, nothing but the highest of praise for Old Blue. The food: Best BBQ in Nova, way better than rocklands. Along with shredded chicken, beans and Mac and cheese, we had a 110lb pig roast, which Old Blue started roasting at 4:30am, instantly became my death row meal (not sure if they'd cater for that but worth asking). Family and friends wouldn't shut up about how amazing it all was. From my first email over a year ago asking about prices and menus, they were responsive, professional, friendly, and more helpful then I would ever imagine a caterer would be.
