I've been wanting to try this place out for the last several months and finally walked by hungry today, so I stopped in. Unlike most any other deli, it was pretty empty and quiet. I placed my order for the "famous" Reuben sandwich and then looked around. Most shocking were the multiple display cases just past the grill filled to the brim with chocolate. Is this a deli or a chocolatier? As if that wasn't enough, I immediately wondered how the dainty sweets weren't melting because it was easily 80 degrees inside. I couldn't take off my scarf and gloves fast enough but it was too late--I was already sweating. I took my $12 sandwich to go and was glad to have it when I arrived home. From others' photos, I knew not to have too-high expectations. While the sandwich was lacking the typical NY-style deli quantity of protein, the flavor was still pretty good. read more

The stench is borderline unbearable. Service was lovely, but the very kind lady could not make up for the horrible quality of the food. Made my stomach react for 3 days AND I paid $15. I was skeptical about trying this place because of the reviews but I took a gamble one night and it paid off. I went last Saturday and ordered a Reuben, Rachel, and fries. I wasn't starving or in a rush and knew it would be a little wait since it was only one cook and a small crowd. Anyway the cook forgot one sandwich for my order and I didn't notice until I looked at the receipt while I waited after 15 minutes. He apologized and said he could make it, I said no thanks and I told him politely you need another cook in here with you lol. Anyway the sandwich and fries were great and my wife loved it also and we came back the next night and got what we originally ordered the night before and it was good. We went looking for breakfast on a trip to Old Town for a wedding. Not a cafe breakfast with cute coffee puns and breads I've never heard of. Just eggs. A morning meat. Some taters, grits, toast. Coffee. You know, the basics. Stage Door was very attractive to us because it was close to our hotel and the deli was OPEN. We can't wait until 11:00, when most of the other places were going to open. We don't care about brunch, mimosas, or hollandaise sauce. We care about a hot, greasy flat top and someone who has fried one million eggs. We ordered omelettes. Fried taters. Toast. Coffee. My Western omelette was bursting with cheesy goondness and hunks of ham, some of it charred from the grill. A lady at the grill, another guy shuffling around doing stuff. The place was empty except for us. I asked him to flip the TV channel from the infomercial about 50's Doo Wop CDs (even I don't own CDs anymore) to ESPN. He said in halting English that he likes REAL football. Then he laughed. We found a discarded Alexandria newspaper and worked the crossword puzzle and drank a Potomac River amount of coffee. I ordered the hot Italian sub- 7.95 my total was $9...and some change. Which isn't right. I asked they say tax but tax wouldn't make it $9 bucks. I ask for an itemized receipt. The receipt says .50 charge for sub bread. Really?? The sandwich is called Italian sub but you gonna have a secret fee for the bread. I am then told you get to pick your bread,well it doesn't say that on the menu and the lady didn't ask me what type of bread I wanted. The bread isn't even fresh bread, it is from an other store. Then proceeds to talk about me in Spanish while making the sandwich. Ma'am just because I'm black doesn't mean I don't understand other languages... won't be back When I got home to eat it the meat tasted and smelled weird. Horrible experience. I ordered a tuna sandwich and they deli charged my credit card $103. I asked the cashier what happened and he said they were having an issue with a button on the register being stuck. He said the manager wasn't in but would have it fixed tomorrow. I called the manager the next day, gave him the info from my receipt, and he said he'd have the charge cancelled in a couple days. 6 days went by and the charge was still showing in my credit card. I called the deli and the said they didn't know when the manager would be back. I called again the following day and the manager said I'd have to dispute the charge with my bank because the person that handles their payments is in Florida. I ate here recently and must say, it was not that great. I asked if they serve breakfast at night and the cook/cashier said no because he didn't want to have to make pancake batter for a few pancakes and then throw the rest of the batter away. That's fine. I understood his point. He then turned away from the conversation and began cooking. I waited a few moments to see if he would return to the conversation and allow me to order. After the few moments, he looked over at me and said "well?". I told him that I wanted to place an order and he asked me what I wanted. I gave him the order, two sandwiches. He got the order correct, but I will say that the deli meat was cheap and the sandwiches were slathered in mayonnaise. I can deal with the mayo, but the cheap meats were not acceptable. I won't go back. Between the rudeness of the service and the cheap deli meat, it isn't worth my time. read more

This is a tiny little cafe with a shelf by the front and side window and bar stools, also several tables with chairs. The breakfast is probably best on King Street. The servings are large, especially the pancakes, the price is small! I always patronize this place when I'm in town, usually several times a year. I like to dine in these little privately owned establishments, the other patrons who are mainly locals are full of knowledge about the area! I find the visiting as important as the food. My wife liked this little cafe also and like me, she really likes to meet the locals. Not a breakfast person, other food items are also available! I'm not sure about this place. I got quite a few things. But... the cake was the best thing I got. The philli cheese steak had little meat so I had to eat it with only one half of the bun. This place is the perfect definition of "Dive". I've been here multiple times and the food is fantastic EVERY time. The Reuben has quickly become my favorite... but those French fries... Oh my Gawd! Crisp and fresh and salted perfectly every time I've had them. Their burgers are some of the best in the area. Don't discount the onion rings... they are pretty amazing too. I've lived in the Old Town area for about a month and have checked out several places in the area and THIS place is the only one that I truly crave. It is attached to the O'Shaughnessy Pub so after a night of drinking and listening to live music, it is the PERFECT place to get your late night grub on. I've also been a couple of times just for dinner when I want that savory Reuben. I love that it is within walking distance from where I live. GREAT job Stage Door. Kind of an odd little deli but it's a decent spot to pick up an egg and cheese on a bagel breakfast sandwich. From the outside it looks kind of old and worn. So the sandwich ( chicken salad ) is good, and this deli provides food to the bar next door, which is nice if you're hanging at O'Shaunessys. However, biggest issue here is that they only serve sandwiches and not meat or cheese by the pound.. Seriously, so disappointing as I felt like Oliver Twist asking for more gruel "Please, sir, can I have some cheese?" The guys behind the counter were very cool, but there really is no excuse for not serving up some Boars Head product by the pound. Sorry, Guys, but the sign says "Deli" not sandwich shop. Yes, delis often serve meat and cheese so customers can go home and make a sweet sammie for lunch. It reminds me of the time I heard another proprietor from a bar up the street refuse to serve awesome gourmet burgers after 2 in the afternoon, because he didn't want to be known as a burger joint. Yeah, that really didn't work out for McDonald's or Five Guys. So a Deli that doesn't serve meat or cheese is really missing the opportunity to embrace capitalism and make more money. In the middle of the lunch hour in Old Town, when a bunch of hungry shirt and ties roam the bricked sidewalks of King St. looking for sustenance, this little deli had just me and one other guy patronizing it. Ah hell, dey got roaches, I'm thinking. Nah, give 'em a try, I re-evaluate. A peek inside makes you think hole-in-the-wall. Indeed, it has some of the familiar cues: poorly lit, small, basic, unpopulated and a smidge on the not very clean side. Its menu is also ripe with the kind of stuff that hole-in-the-walls are made of. Good and greasy, basic fare. This is gonna be a good one, right? One taste of their swiss mushroom burger, though, makes it all too clear that they've missed the mark in that department. It's good, to be sure, but not great. It's three stars good. Solid. The fries were crunchy--like a fatter version of BK's fries. The pickle, eh, it's not even trying. C'mon, pickle! With nobody in line, I was able to get my food fairly quickly and then walk back to the office. ($9 with the fries and a drink added... not exactly budget prices.) The cook smiled as I left and wished me a good day. The food probably won't blow your mind here, but it's a decent place, where one could possibly hide away from the hustle and bustle of the lunch crowds inside within its cozy--watch out for realtor talk!--and quiet confines. read more
