From staff coming out to greet the long line before opening, handing out line snacks of the daily special, greeted with energy at the line, and some of the best food you'll ever eat. On a Saturday in late-May, I ordered the Saturday special (giant beef rib), brisket, wings, slaw, and beans. I took carrot cake home for dessert and everything was great. We went big and ordered the Double Smokeshouse Sampler and the OCS Classic Combo with chicken and pork BBQ. Honestly, everything was so good it's hard to pick a favorite. Today we added another favorite must-go, must-recommend to the list! Old Colony Smokehouse is owned by an award winning Pitmaster and his family. What made the real difference for me today was on a busy and hot North Carolina Saturday in July - that pitmaster wasn't home or resting in a chair somewhere in the cool of an A/C. He was shoulder to shoulder with his staff. My husband briefly met him when we entered and during our visit we observed that man do everything from help serve food, check the eating area, and even clean up around the bathroom area. His desire to serve and to work hard was apparent to anyone who watched him move around the restaurant making sure all the things were getting done. The food? Some of the best we have had. Classic staples like collard greens and mac & cheese were on the menu along with unique items like a Carolina Twinkie (trust me it's worth the $5 add-on!) We shared the Double Smokehouse Sampler to get a taste of the variety of meats offered - turkey, sausage, ribs, pulled meats, and what we really went there for... the brisket. It came with 3 sides and while it was called a double it was enough to feed me, my husband, and our teenage son! When you walk into this old boat house building and make your way to the counter you find an elaborate menu of remarkable meats and side dishes.
