Very disappointing. We have eaten there many times in the past 2 years and were always pleased with the food and service. My daughter was visiting and we chose the Herringbone for dinner on Tuesday before New Years Eve. I ordered the loaded potato soup and the tuna small plate. My daughter had the salad and the shrimp appetizer The soup arrived barely hot and watery. Her salad was fine Then came the tuna with a smear of avocado and corn relish. None of it was edible. The tuna was definitely not fresh . By contrast the shrimp dish was delicious. The waitress graciously offered a replacement but by then I had lost my appetite. I am hoping that this was an uncommon experience because we really liked it beforehand. read more

The Premier spot in the Inner Banks !! Michelin star restaurants have nothing on this place! The scallops melted in my mouth the brown butter sauce was one point. The grits were creamy, cheesy, smooth and delicate, and the wilted greens were wilted perfectly. read more

Waterfront dining, with great ambiance and decent food. Love the beer flight. The servers are attentive and polite. We came here for dinner with a family of four. I expected better from my tuna; it was difficult to eat and didn't taste fresh. Other reviews stated the same (please fix this issue as unfresh fish can cause stomach problems). Whomever manages raw fish there needs to up their game; this should be reliably fresh and taste amazing at a restaurant of this caliber. I would come for drinks and an appetizer instead. Chicken sliders are good. Salads are huge. read more

Absolutely delicious food! We were celebrating our wedding weekend and decided to eat somewhere in town that was a little fancier. When we arrived, the host was very pleasant as she took us to our table. The restaurant was very nice inside. We ordered a plate of bread for an appetizer, my husband got a pizza, and I ordered the market fish, which was Wahoo. Everything was absolutely delicious. I have not been able to find Wahoo where I live, and I had it in Bermuda and loved it. Honestly, the Wahoo at this restaurant was the best I've had yet. The pizza took a while to make, we were told there were some issues with the brick oven. The sweet young waitress apologized over and over for the wait, and then took our drinks off the bill. Overall, we loved the restaurant! Definitely returning next time we are in Edenton. read more

The food was absolutely awesome!! We started with the BBQ Shrimp appetizer which was served on a bed of grits. Both of our dinner entrees were amazing as well. The atmosphere & location were great too. Had the service been better I would've given 5 stars. In the spirit of fairness, the already busy bartender was assigned as our waitress & we were seated in the back room. We did a roadtrip from Wilmington to Edenton yesterday and ate at The Herringbone. Turned out to be a great place with lots of character, great staff, and awesome food. We will be back for more. The chicken soup and Cesar salad was amazing, and the chef did a great job with both flavor and presentation. My daughter enjoyed the chicken sandwich and crème brûlée dessert. I have been here several times and have always had a good experience...Tonight the service was absolutely horrible, we sat at the bar because you tend to get better service. We were so ignored!! folks were checked on, got water and drink refills all around us, while we had to ask for water refills and everything else!!! On to the food, again it was the first time that I had anything bad! The crab cake was ! They is no way there was any crab in the cake! It was wet and tasted like tuna and white fish! The shrimp and grits had way too much sauce and the pepper was overwhelming and the seafood in the pasta dish tasted and smelled bad! I was truly disappointed with this visit!! Cool restaurant on the water and great place to catch the sunset. The building was originally an ice house for the hearing fish industry which thrived in this area. This is probably the most upscale restaurant in the area but well worth your visit. We started out with the brussel sprouts that were a little crispy so I'm pretty sure they were flash fried and had an amazing balsamic honey sauce along with fried pancetta. The crab cake my wife got was mostly crab little to no filler and very flavorful and her arugula salad and a fantastic dressing on it. My seafood pasta came with perfectly cooked shrimp and mussels and a wide noodle with a very light tomato sauce. The muscles were some of the creamiest I've ever had it was literally like eating a spoonful of peanut butter not with the peanut butter taste of course but that consistency of creaminess. The overall meal experience was absolutely phenomenal and I would definitely come back here again. We were celebrating our 35th but the atmosphere here is very casual you can easily come in with a sport jacket and tie or shorts and flip flops it has a secluded dining area along with a large bar area and either would be suitable for your fantastic meal. We stopped in on a Monday afternoon around 2:30. We were greeted right away and were able to choose where we wanted to seat. It is right on the waterfront and very tastefully decorated. We ordered a sangria and a beer to start. It had a great vibe there. We then ordered soup, salad with shrimp, and shrimp and grits. They were the best shrimp and grits I have ever had. The sauce had a Smokey flavor to it and was rich. The soup and salad were delicious as well. This is going to turn into one of our frequent stops for sure. read more

We've been here 5 times. 1st visit was good. We were impressed with the food the atmosphere and service was okay. 2nd time we left after waiting 30 minutes for service. We thought we'd give another try. We never let bad experience tuen us off of any decent place. 3rd time again we were ignored. We weren't approached for a drink order for nearly 27 minutes. We then emailed the establishment with our concerns. We weren't expecting anything in return just an explanation or a possible reason why. We were truly looking for an excuse to come back. Its a nice place. The manager emailed back. He apologized & offered us another visit. Of course we're gonna take advantage of that. The 4th visit was excellent. We were greeted, had our drink order in within minutes, the food order was taken and everything was served up right on time. It was delicious. We started following on FB and getting all of thier specials, burger night, pizza night, etc. We were excited to go back. Surely, after confronting the earlier challenges with the manager of all people, we'd have another great experience. NOPE, not the case at all. Our 5th visit, Monday, March 30th at approximately 5:17 pm, we were greeted & taken to our table. Yep, you guessed it. Nothing, not a single word from a server, hostesses or anyone. They all seemed to be fairly relaxed & not overly worked or in a rush, but still hadn't thought to simply ask us if we'd like drinks or place an order. More than 20 minutes passed and nothing. The wife was ready to leave much earlier. She tends to sense things going downhill sooner than I. After another 10-12 minutes, we called it...again. The food is great, geez, if ya can just get service. I'm now beginning to question whether or not we, my wife & I, are somehow intimidating or portray an air about us that keep folks from wanting us to patronize thier establishment. Hey, we're nice folks, pretty forgiving over mistakes, we even had the money to pay for it. Are we expecting too much? Maybe we'll never know, at least at the Herringbone. I believe that was our last try. We did go right down the street to Waterman and received excellent service and good food. read more

I've been wanting to visit Edenton for 10 years--finally made it happen. While the town exceeded my high expectations--what a beautiful, well cared for town with spectacular homes, both large and small--The Herringbone was merely good. Excellent service, but not exceptional food. Best offerings were the bread, both salty and sweet, and the pork chops, which were more tender than the tenderloin. Unfortunately, I ordered the tenderloin. I still give it a four, however, because it is in Edenton, my new favorite little getaway. Trust me. read more

When the ambiance and service were so good, I was worried that the food might not make the grade! That was not the case! The food was five stars. Our table had Salmon, Crab Cakes, Pasta Primavera, Dinner Salad, Tile Fish and I had the Teres Major. A fabulous cut of beef with the tenderness of filet mignon but far more flavorful. Best ambiance of any restaurant in Edenton, NC. A converted historic building with exposed brick walls and beams as well as patio seating, all overlooking the water of the Albemarle Sound. We will certainly be back when we are in the area. We had Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch. The food and service at both seatings was superb. I had perhaps the best Shrimp and Grits of my life, and I've tried them all over Charleston. We had some time to kill after brunch, so we sat in a couple of the restaurant's Adirondack chairs at the water's edge overlooking the Sound watching the shorebirds and boats. Owners Stephanie and Joe also own the Littlejohn Carriage House in town which is in walking distance to the restaurant. It is perfect for a couple for a short or longer stay. read more
