We have fostered for Old Dog Haven for about 2.5 years. I can't believe anyone would write a bad review for this amazing organization, but I can't speak to others experiences, only my own. I have witnessed two amazing, unadoptable dogs get moved from a shelter into ODH hands. ODH truly takes any old dog and gives them a loving home for their final days. I don't know any other rescue who is this dedicated to the animals. I can't imagine our lives or the lives of these dogs without Old Dog Haven. If you're reading this review wanting to foster, reach out on the website and tell them you're interested. It may be that your home is unsuitable for older dogs (you have to remember, these guys have years of experience and each restriction likely has a story behind it). But if you can't foster please consider transport as another option. If you're looking to donate to ODH, take some time to look through the doggie profiles on the ODH website. You can sponsor a dog and put a nice message. I have been so amazed at what a great organization this is. I got involved several years ago as a foster mom and am now fostering 3 dogs (plus have my own resident dog) What I like is that they are very careful to vet the prospective foster people and then work to place the right dog with the right family. They become aware of these old dogs and dogs that also need veterinary care and or medications by shelters that recognize the dog is not adoptable. It is a win-win situation as I get to love on my permanent foster dogs for the rest of their life (can be short or years) and ODH help support us by the vet care and meds being covered by donations. Senior dogs are the BEST but sometimes they are overlooked at shelters or rescues because people are afraid to take on possible medical issues. This organization rescues these dogs and places them in volunteer homes to live out the rest of their lives in loving care and comfort, while providing for their medical care. I'm not sure where the negativity is coming from except it sounds like a few cases of sour grapes from people who were called out for being unsuitable caregivers. I stumbled across Old Dog Haven on Facebook several years ago. Their postings made me laugh and cry often. I continued to follow, and eventually became a volunteer and a dedicated supporter. Because of the nature of rescue, it would be a tall order to find one that was completely perfect, but ODH does a stellar job for sure. I have met many of the foster families and dogs, and I am here to tell you, they are a great bunch. The dedication shown to the wellbeing on all levels of their senior dogs is simply amazing. I am proud to be a part of it all, even though I am in another state and can't be a final refuge foster. These people are saints. What they do for old dogs, who would otherwise live in misery or be euthanized, is nothing short of miraculous. I have witnessed dogs coming to them in terrible condition, and a month later the same dog looks healthy and happy. I hope I would never need them, but if I died and one of my old dogs needed a home, I would be very happy that Old Dog Haven is around as a safety net for old dogs in need. My father died recently leaving his three older dogs. Well, two older dogs and one middle aged dog. It was my responsibility to find them new homes. One was 16, one 14, and one 8. Not peak adopting ages. Luckily I quickly found a home for the 8 year old poodle, Lambme, through Sunny Skies. With the wonderful help of ODH I "quickly" found a home for Pinto, a very handsome Papillon. By quickly I mean two offers in one day. But that is after we had exchanged several emails over three weeks regarding the dogs behavior, history, and a vet checkup. I received excellent advice and information from Tina who always responded within a day. They do take their job (all VOLUNTEERS!) seriously and treat the process with respect and consideration--it appears to the chagrin of some unhappy one-star reviewers! (Come on now, these people are finding homes or final foster homes for dogs who otherwise would be euthanized early or left at shelters. Who gives a 1 star review to a charity origination that helps old dogs!) Back on topic...Sadly, we decided to not attempt to place the 16 year old long haired Chihuahua, Paco, because he had serious health issues and moving him into a new home at this stage seemed cruel. Tina from ODH let me know with a lovely letter that I had done all I could and I should rest assured the dogs all knew and know they are loved. Really appreciate her kindness and all those that volunteer here. So much so that I was happy to donate (unbidden) much needed money to this wonderful organization. None of the dogs stay at a shelter - they are either at the founder's home or foster homes around the Seattle area. If a dog is too sick to be placed they put them in a a "final refuge" home where they will live out the rest of their lives with medical expenses paid. We just become a Final Refuge Home for Old Dog Haven. Meaning: we are a permanent foster family for one of their senior dogs that would most likely not have a good chance of getting adopted for different reasons. Our pup Marvin's reason is that he is 12 years old and blind. Old Dog Haven covers all of Marvin's medical expenses and we provide the best loving retirement home that Marvin could hope for! Sounds like an awesome deal for all involved! If you ever wanted to get involved with a rescue group Old Dog Haven is the one for you! I have been learning about Old Dog Haven for about 15 years. I have fostered dogs for them. I find the 1* reviews hard to believe. Old Dog Haven is an entirely run volunteer organization. I know how many hours the people who are active volunteers work, especially Judith and Lee, the founders. I thought living with 10 dogs was a lot--they live with many more than that. Yet their home is clean and the dogs are happy. Old Dog Haven spends $30,000 or more every single month on veterinary bills. That tells you that the dogs they have need a lot of care. I've seen them turn around absolutely impossible cases. Both behaviorally and medically impossible cases. One dog I pulled to foster from the Tacoma Humane Society was a dog who bit. She had obviously been abused and severely neglected. ODH asked me to keep her. It only took about 6 months and Patty was a different dog. Weight loss, hypothyroid treatment, dental surgery, breast cancer surgery, bladder infection treatment, kennel cough treatment, lots of behavioral therapy, and dog massage with meditation turned her around. Her weight dropped to normal--from 35 LB to 18 LB, counter-conditioning and lots of training helped her lose her dog and people aggression. When I go to Nordstrom, I know i will be paying a very high price. But then I get very good service and the whole purpose of Nordstrom is to keep me coming back and paying their high prices. The purpose of a dog rescue is to rescue dogs. It is not to make people feel like they are the most important customer in the world. Maybe the day ODH did not respond the way someone wanted was a day ODH had just pulled several severely ill dogs from the shelter. Maybe one of their long term fosters had died. In situations like that, one cannot always cater to the able-bodied, independent humans the way one might like to. One has to attend to the emergencies and the helpless. One reviewer wrote: "I conveyed my story to the owner of one of Seattle's leading full-service dog shoppes/salons, and she told me they had stopped working with Old Dog Haven for similar reasons." What does this even mean? That a group of volunteers who are stretching themselves to the limit don't always treat every person they encounter like Nordstrom's does? I, personally, am glad that Old Dog Haven's focus is on the dogs! Rather than criticize them, why not donate some volunteer hours so that the current volunteers do not have to work so hard? read more

For 2 years and 3 months we have been the final refuge home for Pedro Vasquez. He was loved and cared for. He had his people and his boy that he knew he could count on for his needs. He had his friends, Stanley and Bella, who would play with him when he got a bit of engery and who would help him find his way back to the house if he went a bit too far in the back yard. Yesterday Pedro was taken away from us by the owner of the organization who placed him with us 2 years and 3 months ago. She said that I've been severely neglecting him. That by not taking him to the vet as often as they say that I've neglected him. She said that he had been in kidney failure for over a year and I had done nothing for him. When I asked her about him being in kidney failure about him being on meds or special food. That right then was the first time I had heard of him being in kidney failure. She said, well that's neither here nor there. Then she went on to say I've neglected him by not seeing the eye vet that his cataracts were horrible. For her to say he was neglected is a horrible thing to say. He was loved and happy at our house. No I didn't take him back to the eye vet. The drops they told me to give him caused him pain and be would cry. Yes he has cataracts but his eyes aren't weepy nor did he rub them or act like they hurt him. No I didn't take him to the vet the ridiculous amount of times each year like they said too. But I did take him in yesterday because I thought there was something wrong with him. And now he's gone. Hopefully they found someone who will let him eat when he's hungry and not when they say it's time. Hopefully he'll have a warm soft bed to sleep in and not be crated. And hopefully he understands that they took him from us and that I didn't just leave him there. But he probably doesn't. I don't understand the taking the dog to the vet when nothing is the matter with him. Why upset him and cause him stress when there's nothing wrong? I took him to the vet because his cough, that I asked about each time I took him to the vet and was told it's normal for a small dog to have a cough and not to worry, had gotten worse and had only gotten worse in the last few weeks. I don't understand spending about $80k a month on vet bills. Yes 80k. I know a few people who work with ODH and told me they spend about that much a month. I hope my little Pedro is ok. I hope he knows we love him and miss him. And I hope he went to someone other than Judith who has too many dogs. How can someone with 15 plus dogs give them the love and attention they need? read more

I had a very disappointing experience with Old Dog Haven. Like many people who are involved in animal/pet rescue, these women are clearly not people persons. Both Lisa and Judith were very nice to me before I attempted to adopt one of their dogs. I took the dog for a walk and brought my 2 established dogs in for a meet & greet. I was told up and down that their dog would fit perfectly in my household. Not so. Shortly after bringing their dog home, it became obvious that he needed to be an "only child" and did not play well with others (and found out later that the previous owner stated that this was the case). I had to be diligent to separate them and keep them separated until I was able to return their dog. Lisa and Judith both misled me about their dog's needs, putting him and my dogs in a potentially dangerous situation. They were both quite snotty and cold to me during and after the return, implying that if I'd been a stronger alpha, things would have worked out. I tried emailing Judith a while later to ask for an update on their dog (I really liked the dog, but was not going to put him or my own dogs in a dangerous situation) and poured my heart out, as one of my dogs was diagnosed with cancer at the time. You would think that a pet rescuer would have some empathy in such a situation, but I got no response from her whatsoever. How cold does a person have to be? Judith was a completely different person after I returned the dog. Lisa, who was my point person, was outwardly hostile to me, even going so far as to throw away a toy I'd given their dog right in front of me, not even waiting for me to leave the room! I conveyed my story to the owner of one of Seattle's leading full-service dog shoppes/salons, and she told me they had stopped working with Old Dog Haven for similar reasons. Interesting, and good to know. I have a soft spot in my heart for old dogs (most of my dogs were adopted at age 9 or older), but I have no love for Old Dog Haven. I get it. I like dogs better than people, too, but I would 1) never lie to a potential adopter just to get a dog adopted, and 2) never treat someone like a piece of crap just because the adoption didn't work out. In my experience, the director jumps to conclusions about your ability to foster effectively without asking any questions or suggesting solutions to any potential issues you might anticipate with bringing a new dog into your home. It's really too bad as they likely have alienated more than one perfectly wonderful home for an old dog. And the dogs that could have been helped pay the price. read more
