Middle-Oldest Grand Daughter wanted sushi for her birthday, and Daddy Dearest is a fan of Old Dominion so - off we went. I haven't been there in years so did not know what to expect. Since we were in the company of a bunch of preteens, ice tea and mango bubble thingies were enjoyed by all. (For the future: they have a full bar, with everything from beers to fruity drinks to shots. I didn't see sake on the menu, but I'm not a fan so didn't look really hard). Apps were good, with serving sizes plentiful. We ordered fried calamari (served in stick form, not rings; weird but tasty), really nice tempura, and Ying Yang shrimp (the spicy may sauce was OK, but the wasabi sauce was killer!). For mains we focused on: sushi. Lots and lots of sushi. The rolled sushi menu is very long; the sushi (actually nigiri) and sashimi menu not so much. Nothing on the menu described how big the portions were so the 'dults each ordered a several different selections, both rolls and sushi. This kiddies ordered ramen, and Spousal Unit got Drunken Noodles with Chicken along with a sushi roll. Turns out the rolls were HUGE so we overordered dramatically (pro tip: ask in the future). Everything was fresh and tasty. My only quibble was that the Spider Roll appeared to be fried surimi (artificial crab) not soft shell crab. How could I tell? No legs, baby! We rolled out stuffed, with a doggie bag full of sushi for Daddy Dearest's second dinner. The price was very reasonable, and the quality far better than Lantern Sushi (but not as good as Sushi Nomo or Lazy Fish). I loved the rolls we ordered- the Dragonfly roll was fantastic & the special scallop roll (forgot the name sorry) was pretty good. My siblings and I visited mid-afternoon on a Wednesday and were immediately seated. The restaurant was basically empty. This was great except for the fact that the woman who sat us was less than friendly. It was quite awhile before she returned to take our order. We had never been here before but were ready to order appetizers and entrees by the time she came back. She continued to be less than friendly throughout our meal. Easily the worst service I've ever received. Luckily, the food came out quickly, hot, and fresh. It all tasted incredible. Fast service upon arriving for dinner. Sat quickly and had our water in a matter of minutes. In looking over the menu my daughter and I chose the the California Roll as an appetizer and I order the Asian Dish Creations of Chicken with Thai Red Curry Sauce loaded with Broccoli, carrots, squash, tomatoes, onion, bamboo shoots, snow peas, baby corn and basil. Man was it a plateful, topped off with a side bowl of rice and served up with their house miso soup, soy bean pasta with seaweed, tofu, green onion and fish stock. The sauce was so good I was trying to figure out how to drink it as a side dish! My daughters California roll, was served up in good order along with a Spider Roll or soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, seaweed and sweet sauce. She loved the California roll and ordered another as she was not too fond on the Spider Roll. Not that there was anything wrong with it or the presentation but that the blending of flavors and aromas were not appealing to her taste buds. They packaged up the Spider Roll to take home and brought out the California Roll packaged up to, and on the house, I guess because my daughter did not like the Spider Roll. We greatly appreciated the service, cleanliness of the location, quiet atmosphere and being able to sit right up front to watch the Sushi Chef''s work their magic. I went to Old Dominion Grill and Sushi during their lunch special and it was pretty quiet with only a few other tables occupied. Their lunch special is from Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 3 PM and includes American dishes (cheeseburgers & wraps), wok n grill items, maki rolls, and bento boxes. They also have a wide variety of alcoholic beverages from Dominion beer (including a flight option) to wine and Sake. The also have Bubble tea in both black and green tea with different flavors for $4.50. I ordered the lychee bubble tea as well as a glass of the Hakushika Orchard Sake ($6). The sake was dry and crisp, with a slight hint of sweetness from the white peach. They also came in other flavors like pear, pineapple, and yuzu. The service could be improved. When I asked what the Seasonal Dominion beer was the man said he would have to ask and get back to me. He then proceeded to tell another woman something to which she came to me and rudely asked "What do you want?" This is definitely no way to approach a customer. Unfortunately, they only had one of their Dominion beers available so I could not order the flight. In regards to the food, we had ordered the Steak Teriyaki Bento Box ($13), which came with steak and rice, steamed carrots and broccoli, a California oil, rangoon, and tempura-fried onion, zucchini, broccoli, and sweet potato slice each. We had also ordered 3 rolls for $13.75. The Kani roll was just a chunk of imitation crab meat, which was a little disappointing. I thought it would be the imitation crab salad. The crunchy salmon roll was also a disappointment. It was just a piece of salmon with panko breadcrumbs. The tune cucumber roll was good. We had to ask for little dishes for the soy sauce because we hadn't been given one from the start. Overall I would say the food here is good, but not great. The fish in the maki rolls were fresh . Baffling that this place has this amount of good reviews. Either people here don't know what good food should be like, or they planted a bunch of fake reviews using chat GPT. We went here because appearance-wise, it looked alright. It really did. But as you know looks can be deceiving. Everything we were served was fresh...fresh out of the microwave. Vegetables came directly out of one of those microwave steam bags. Rice was several days old at best - hard and clearly stale. Quickly reheated in a microwave and served carelessly. Their appetizers were ok, but clearly microwaved (mozzarella sticks and egg rolls). Stay away from all "special rolls." They are special...REAL special. Sloppy and of the "put everything in the universe on one big sloppy fried mess" type. Greasy and disgusting. Regular rolls were made with the same days-old hard rice. I am truly praying I don't get sick from this. My coworker's entree came out before any of the appetizers, followed by the appetizers, then mine. Had a lot of leftovers and refused to take them. Their mixed drink "the Tokyo rose" tastes like generic brand cherry cough syrup with rubbing alcohol. Their servers are pretty careless and eager to get done with you so they can return to their phones. We wanted an appetizer, drinks, and entrees. After each item we ordered the waiter would say "ok that's all?" and begin walking away. The place was not busy and all he did afterwards was park himself behind the counter and fiddle with his phone. Thank god I'm traveling for business and this was on a company card and not my money. I checked this place out on a whim after having no idea it even existed despite being in this shopping area multiple times. On the surface, the atmosphere and location seemed ideal. I go to places solo because it's easy to evaluate a restaurants service and priorities. As a solo customer; I expect to be a lower priority, but to not be forgotten. Upon entering, I stood at the entrance for several minutes before finally having a server guide me to a booth. I know we live in a pandemic world now where having staff is a privilege and takeout is booming, but I feel this establishment was once much bigger than it used to be in terms of indoor dining. One half of the restaurant is eerily empty and closed off. While the bar seemed inviting, no bartender was present but the place seemed to have a decent selection of booze. There appeared to only be two servers and maybe 4-5 tables . When I was finally able to order, I got the sashimi deluxe and hot tea. One large table was fairly rowdy (which I guess had the servers priority) where the guys behind the sushi counter were seemingly prioritizing pickup orders. After about 20 minutes, my server would glimpse at me but never asked if I needed anything but would ask the chef where my order was. This would happen about three times before I was finally served my food. I waited roughly 45 minutes for my meal. While the presentation was uh, interesting (everything was in a wooden boat), the sashimi wasn't very good. Without soy sauce, it would have just been very 'fishy'. I suspect the fish here isn't fresh since the flavor was lacking, but I was just glad to finally eat. I was hoping to have another sushi place to go to in town, but this place will be a pass for me going forward. Tucked into an unassuming shopping center, Old Dominion Grill and Sushi is the very definition of a hidden gem. Upon pulling up to the restaurant and seeing where it was and what it looked like, I admit I was hesitant, but I was proven wrong in a big way. The place was surprisingly empty for a Saturday evening (at the beginning of our meal, my wife and I were the only customers) but all that really meant in the end was that everyone else was missing out. First things first, Old Dominion probably has some of the best bubble tea I have ever tasted. Sweet and creamy, with the tapioca pearls at just the right consistency, it was a fight not to drink the whole thing before I got my food. And speaking of food, the sushi was also some of the best I've had. From the first bite, I could tell that every component was well-seasoned and fresh: not something you can say for a lot of American sushi joints. The sushi itself was prepared just a short distance away, in full view, and arrived within minutes of our ordering it. If you like things spicy, try the Red Dragon Roll. If not, the Shrimp Tempura Roll was also delightful. The brown sugar bubble tea will make a perfect pairing to go alongside, although they also appear to offer a decent selection of alcoholic beverages as well. It was funny but we ended up just eating the seafood, and then they claimed their chicken was halal and cooked separately from the other meat but it was tough to believe from how no one really spoke English there, and if they did they weren't sure if it was halal.
